Abstract

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), a combination of autonomous devices, with the properties of sensing, processing and communication, cooperatively monitor physical and environmental conditions. Energy Harvesting (EH) from the surroundings and storing energy for computational purposes can prolong the continuity of operations and life-time of sensor nodes. In this paper we propose a method of wireless power and information transfer in a WSN. The proposed harvest-then-transfer protocol in Wireless Power Communication Networks (WPCN), harvests energy in the downlink and transfers information in the uplink, nodes can be classified into Data Transmitting (DT) or Energy Receiving (ER) based on their energy levels. The ER nodes then get energy while DT nodes transmit data. In a WPCN, the Hybrid access point (H-AP) consists of power beacon (PB) and AP. The PB provides power to the ER nodes while DT nodes send data to the AP in each communication frame. The DT nodes use the Frames Slotted ALOHA (FSA) anti-collision protocol to reduce collisions while sending data. The proposed scheme can be used to achieve a proper power available for nodes in a given frame size.
