With the development of intelligent home appliance technology, real-time home appliance status information is now generated in large quantities. New technology is necessary in order to process the large amount of status information that is generated every day. An innovative technology that has recently been used to process large amounts of data is cloud computing. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a system model to control and monitor home appliances using home network and cloud computing technologies in a smart home environment. UPnP technology is used to extract status information from home appliances. Cloud computing technology analyzes and processes the information and also provides virtualization services to users. In the proposed method, the gateway collects and stores home appliance information using home network technologies and sends the information to the cloud server for storage and management.

A home network system (HNS) provides value- added services for home users by networking house-hold appli- ances and sensors. In the conventional architecture, the HNS appliances and services are tightly coupled. It is therefore difficult for users to freely choose their favorite appliances and services. In this paper, we propose a new HNS architecture that accommodates multi-vendor services by extensively using cloud technologies. The new architecture manages individual HNS operations and data as standard services within the cloud. The vendor services must go through the cloud to access the HNS. Thus, loose coupling among the HNS and services can be achieved. As a result, the proposed architecture realizes more flexible HNS beneficial for both users and vendors. Index Terms—home network system, cloud computing, smart city, multi-vendor system, HNS services

Recent advances in multimedia network systems and mechatronics have led to the development of a new generation of applications that associate the use of various multimedia objects with the behavior of multiple robotic actors. The connection of audio and video devices through high speed multimedia networks is expected to make the system more convenient to use. For example, many home appliances, such as a video camera, a display monitor, a video recorder, an audio system and so on, are being equipped with a communication interface in the near future. Recently some platforms (i.e. UPnP 1 , HAVi 2 and so on) are proposed for constructing home networks; however, there are some issues to be solved to realize various services by connecting different equipment via the pervasive peer-to-peer network. UPnP offers network connectivity of PCs of intelligent home appliances, practically, which means to require a PC in the network to control other devices. Meanwhile, HAVi has been developed for intelligent AV equipments with sophisticated functions using high CPU power and large memory. Considering the targets of home alliances are embedded systems, this situation raises issues of software and hardware complexity, cost, power consumption and so on. In this study, we have proposed and developed the service oriented network architecture for control and management of home appliances, named SONICA (Service Oriented Network Interoperability for Component Adaptation), to address these issues described before.

Performing motor activities including activities of daily living (ADL) on their own is challenging for individuals who have lost their motor functionalities due to various conditions such as spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, spinal muscle atrophy etc. Their mobility is also restricted depending on the severity of the disability. This paper proposes an Electroencephalography (EEG) signals based brain machine interface (BMI) for a wheelchair along with the facility to control various home appliances depending on the location of the user. The proposed BMI uses Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) of EEG signals to identify the user intentions and recognized intentions are used to control the wheelchair (by wheelchair controller) or operate different home appliance connected to the system (by home appliance controller) based on the location information estimated by a Bluetooth localization beacon system. A set of experiments were carried out with healthy subjects to validate the proposed system and the results yielded that the proposed BMI system has the ability to effectively control the wheelchair as well as different home appliances connected to system using only less number of user intention signals.

There has been a significant development in the area of an individual's routine tasks and those that can be automated. So, many workers are trying to implement universal remote using smart mobile as a part of Home Automation System. Panth and Jivani (1) have developed a Home Automation System using mobile in Android platform. The system has been designed to automate 8 bit Bluetooth enabled micro controller, which controls lights and fans using on and off relay switches. But this system lacks the capability of controlling any IR controlled devices.

With the rapid development of economy, science, and technology, people have higher and higher requirements for the quality of home life, and smart home systems are required to have higher convenience and comfort. The continuous development of embedded technology, short‐range wireless communication technology, and microcontroller technology provides a new development direction for the research and development of smart home systems. Under the premise of fully studying the research status and development trend of smart home systems, this paper combines embedded technology, ZigBee wireless communication technology, voice recognition technology, GSM communication technology, etc., and proposes a ZigBee‐based smart voice home appliance control system. The system adopts ZigBee wireless communication to form a comprehensive management system for household electrical appliances, electronic and electrical equipment, etc., for household electrical control, intelligent security, and environmental monitoring. This paper designs the overall scheme of a smart home control system based on voice recognition technology. According to this scheme, the hardware and software of the system are designed, and the wireless communication method combining Wi‐Fi and RF (radio frequency) of the system is also determined. In order to make the system more humane, two sets of control schemes, voice control and button control, are designed according to the system’s functional requirements. In the voice control solution, the user first reads the control commands set in the voice library on the smart terminal, and then, the system automatically recognizes the commands read by the user. After the recognition is successful, the user can control the home appliances through the command. In the key control scheme, users can control home appliances through keys on the smart terminal. The upper computer transplants the audio library and the algorithm studied in this paper to realize the audio collection and storage, the confirmation of family members, and the recognition of voice commands; the lower computer is used for real‐time collection of environmental information and wireless control of home facilities. After the system is started, the family members are first confirmed by voice, and then, the voice command recognition result and real‐time environmental information jointly decide to form a control command. The upper computer sends the control command to the lower computer through the serial port to control the corresponding home equipment. The system is tested and analyzed under experimental conditions. The test results show that the system can control home facilities through voice commands combined with real‐time environmental information while confirming family members.
