A new precoding scheme for spectral efficient optical OFDM systems
Abstract The filtered‐orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F‐OFDM) scheme has gained attention as a promising solution in the field of visible light communication (VLC) systems. One crucial aspect in VLC is the conversion of the complex F‐OFDM signal into a real signal that corresponds with direct detection and intensity modulation. Traditionally, achieving a real F‐OFDM signal has involved imposing Hermitian symmetry (HS) on the samples of the Inverse Fast Fourier transform (IFFT), which requires 2N‐point IFFT and obtains an N‐point FFT, thus adding complexity. In this study, a novel approach is presented and implemented, aiming to enhance spectral efficiency and reduce system complexity by generating a real F‐OFDM signal without relying on HS. This approach is then compared with HS‐free (HSF)‐OFDM, direct current biased optical OFDM, and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM. The suggested method offers a remarkable improvement of ~50% in the required IFFT/FFT volume. Consequently, this method reduces hardware complexity and power usage compared with the traditional F‐OFDM method. Moreover, regarding error rates, the proposed method demonstrates better spectral efficiency than HSF‐OFDM.

Adaptive predistortion technique for nonlinear LED with dimming control in VLC system
Smart city planners pay more attention towards visible light communication (VLC) system to achieve seamless high speed connectivity. A light emitting diode (LED) acts as a transmitter in VLC system. However, the nonlinear characteristics and dimming nature of LED limits the performance of the VLC system by degrading the quality of transmitted signal. In this paper, we propose an adaptive-learning-architecture (ALA) based predistortion technique to estimate and compensate for LED nonlinearities as well as increase the spectral efficiency of a VLC system. A DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) signal is considered. The performance with and without predistorter is analysed assuming optical line-of-sight (LOS) channel. It is shown that degradation due to LED nonlinearity can be compensated by using ALA-based predistortion, and the overall Predistorter-LED system is able to approach near-linear performance. Further, we investigate the impact of dimming on the performance of nonlinear LED in VLC system. Simulation results based on symbol error rate (SER), amplitude distortion (AM/AM) curves and constellation plots validate the performance of our proposed technique.

DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) has been proposed in visible light communication (VLC) to overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of light emitting diode (LED). Due to the implementation of the inverse fast Fourier transform at the DCO-OFDM transmitter, DCO-OFDM suffers from its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which restricts its use in some VLC applications, especially where the optical power efficiency is a crucial requirement. That is because the LEDs used in VLC systems have a limited optical power-current linear range. To this end, a novel discrete Fourier transform spread-optical pulse amplitude modulation (DFTS-OPAM) signal scheme based on the single carrier-interleaved frequency division multiple access (SC-IFDMA) signal is introduced in this paper to address the high PAPR issue of OFDM. DFTS-OPAM is achieved by considering a PAM as an SC-IFDMA data symbol and duplicate the output vector of the fast Fourier transform at the SC-IFDMA transmitter side. Simulation results show that the PAPR of the proposed scheme is 7 dB lower than that of DCO-OFDM. Furthermore, this significant PAPR improvement is experimentally investigated where the practical results show that the proposed scheme can provide more 2.5 dB reduction in the average transmitted power requirement compared to DCO-OFDM and can subsequently increase the maximum achieved distance between the transmitter and the receiver up to 44%.
Read moreThroughput improvement and PAPR reduction for OFDM-based VLC systems using an integrated STC-IMADJS technique
Visible light communication (VLC) is a technology that is currently being employed to achieve high data rates. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a powerful scheme for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) that is becoming increasingly important. OFDM systems based on VLC are accomplished through the implementation of IM-DD constraints, including direct current biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), and asymmetrically clipped DC-biased (ADO-OFDM), among others. The OFDM technique based on VLC is inefficient in terms of spectral efficiency and has a high peak to average power ratio (PAPR). In this article, the symbol time compression-image adjust (STC-IMADJS) technique will be proposed for throughput maximization and PAPR reduction in the DCO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, and ADO-OFDM systems. Furthermore, the STC technique enables the simultaneous transmission of two sub-carriers through Walsh spreading codes without inference between them. As a result, the OFDM symbol has been reduced by 50%. The IMADJS strategy reduces the high PAPR of transmitted signals by compressing large signals and expanding small signals, as long as the average power level remains constant after compression. Therefore, the proposed STC-IMADJS technique doubles the throughput as well as significantly reduces the PAPR for OFDM systems based on VLC. The simulation results are performed using Matlab-2021a for 1024 sub-carriers. As a result, the simulation results show that the proposed technique reduces the PAPR by 3.7 dB (86%), 8.16 dB (93%), and 1.81 dB (20%) for DCO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, and ADO-OFDM systems respectively. Furthermore, the technique has a significantly lower computational complexity than conventional OFDM systems based on VLC. Finally, the measures of performance through this article are bit error rate and complementary cumulative distribution function.
Read moreComplex Signal Mapping for Improving Spectral Efficiency of Li-Fi Systems
Light fidelity (Li-Fi) systems based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme have gained more attention in the communications circles, as a means to provide high spectral efficiency and ensure stricter data rate requirements for visible light communication (VLC) systems. However, common OFDM schemes employ Hermitian symmetry to obtain a real-valued signal which is necessary in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) optical systems, at the expense of doubling the required bandwidth. In this paper, a novel transmission scheme for an OFDM-based Li-Fi system is proposed to tackle the issue in question. A new approach to complex signal mapping (CSM), based on the pairing function method, has been developed for Li-Fi systems. It does not require Hermitian symmetry and, hence, saves about 50% of the required bandwidth. Unlike existing OFDM-based VLC approaches, the proposed scheme employs CSM to ensure a real and positive signal without Hermitian symmetry in order to fully utilize the bandwidth available to Li-Fi networks. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms other systems in terms of spectral efficiency. The CSM-OFDM based Li-Fi system also achieves a good peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction with acceptable bit-error-rate (BER) performance, compared to conventional approaches.

The exponential rise in wireless communication demands and allied applications have revitalized academia-industries to develop an efficient and potential solution. Furthermore, the high-pace increasing scarcity of radio spectrum has also alarmed researchers to achieve better Quality of Service (QoS) centric solution. To meet such demands Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems have gained global attention; however, up surging high rate, range and reliability (3R) needs demand better performance. Towards these goals, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) based VLC systems is an efficient approach; though its efficacy under Multiple Users (MU) conditions remains least explored. Enabling MIMO-MU based VLC can achieve 3R objectives effectively; however, factors like multipath attenuation, interferences and varied impairment-affects makes classical approached confined. The MIMO-MU VLC systems require robust error, noise or interference resilient transmission even under adverse conditions such as non-linear LED, multipath attenuation and interference. Towards these objectives, in this paper a highly robust MIMO-MU VLC system is developed that incorporates an augmented MIMO channel design and combined pre-coding and post equalization schemes. To alleviate major interference probability in MIMO-MU environment, proposed model incorporates time (delay)-multiplexing based data transmission followed by signal adaptive precoding and Volterra Kernel based Hybrid-equalizer. This approach enables interference and noise removal as well as LED non-linearity handling under MIMO-MU VLC communication. The use of a Volterra Kernel based Decision Feedback Equalization with both linear as well as non-linear equalization enables proposed VLC system to exhibit low Bit Error Rate with low modulation index and taps, that optimizes trade-off between performance as well as complexity.
Read moreAnalysis of PAPR reduction algorithms for optical OFDM 5G radio waveform system for visible light communication
The integration of Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with the 5G radio waveforms has lately been attracting special attention toward its possible Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems. On the other hand, however, a key challenge in the Optical OFDM is the presence of very high PAPR, degrading the overall system performance by introducing nonlinear distortions in the optical transmitter. In the present paper, different kinds of PAPR reduction algorithms specifically developed for Optical OFDM in VLC systems are developed and investigated. Analyze techniques like clipping, selective mapping (SLM), partial transmit sequence (PTS), and companding for their PAPR reduction efficiency along with the preservation of spectral efficiency and signal integrity. Based on the above aspects, various performance metrics, such as BER, computational complexity, and SNR, have been considered in order to understand each technique’s trade-off. It can be clearly seen that the hybrid and adaptive approaches achieve greater PAPR reduction without much loss of performance and are thus appropriate for future generation optical communication systems. This analysis underlines the use of optimized PAPR reduction algorithms to achieve robust and efficient systems for 5G VLC applications.

We address the optimal transmission of LED-based visible light communication (VLC) system using direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) modulation and avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver. The peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) characteristic of O-OFDM signal is studied, which reveals that the careful setting of transmission parameters is necessary for O-OFDM signal with high PAPR to avoid the severe nonlinear distortion. We further experimentally investigate the nonlinear distortion caused by the LED clipping and APD module saturation, and define a modified term called signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) to measure the influence of nonlinear distortion on system performance. The derived explicit expression of SNDR shows that the performance depends on the transmission parameters of both direct current bias Vdc and peak-to-peak voltage Vpp. Meanwhile the sequential quadratic programming algorithm is applied to maximize SNDR and obtain the optimal transmission parameters. The optimal transmission of the nonlinear LED-VLC system is achieved via both simulations and experiments.
Read morePAPR reduction in DCO-OFDM VLC system using VLM precoding and nonlinear companding techniques
Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising and viable optical wireless communication (OWC) system that utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to achieve high data rates, energy efficiency, and resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Direct-current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is a widely used scheme in VLC due to its high spectral efficiency. However, it suffers from significant challenges related to its elevated peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which causes nonlinear distortion and signal clipping due to LED limitations. To address this issue, this paper proposes a combination of Vandermonde-like matrix (VLM) precoding and nonlinear companding transform (NCT) techniques (specifically A-law and μ-law) over DCO-OFDM-based VLC. The VLM precoding minimizes the autocorrelation of the OFDM signal, hence reducing its PAPR, and NCT compresses the dynamic range of the signal. Simulation results indicated that the hybrid techniques achieved a PAPR reduction of around 3.5 dB (by 76 %); this is in the best case reduction compared to the conventional DCO-OFDM while maintaining an acceptable bit error rate (BER), moderately higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is required.

The dual property of LEDs to facilitate illumination and Communication concurrently has driven Visible Light Communication (VLC) as an emerging technology and a promising alternative to Radio Frequency (RF) Communication. The primary objective of VLC is to increase the data rates and to have better performance of the networks especially for indoor applications. In this juncture, for the purpose of increasing the Information Spectral Density (ISD), Fast Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (FOOFDM) can be exploited. In this work, the performance of FOOFDM is evaluated by employing various channel estimation algorithms and Probability of Error expression is derived for the developed system models. In addition, investigations on channel estimation in DC Biased Optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) is carried out where, the result analysis emphasize that, FOOFDM is superior in terms of both power efficiency and spectral efficiency when compared to DCO-OFDM. Employing a real-valued transform and its simple one dimensional modulation, makes FOOOFM to exhibit lower computational complexity when compared with hermitian symmetry imposed optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM).

While the traditional Visible Light Communication (VLC) system has attracted a lot of research attentions on boosting throughput, using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices, e.g. existing cameras on the smartphones, is a recent trend to implement readily deployable VLC systems. In particular, since LED-Camera VLC systems have shown a promising potential in large indoor communication due to the growing deployment of LED lighting infrastructure, a comprehensive VLC system with cooperative transmission and roaming support has become an impending need. To this end, we propose a novel VLC and visible light sensing (VLS) system to address that by leveraging LED sensing and effective encoding/decoding schemes. It is achieved first by utilizing LED sensing via converting parts of LED luminaire into light sensors to detect diffuse reflection change caused by presence of the user. After the users are detected and located, the system employs rateless codes and newly designed code assignment scheme to collaboratively transmit to detected users in their communication cells. We believe the proposed system has the potential to a roaming support VLC system in the whole building or indoor areas.

Recently, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has been proposed in visible light communications (VLC) systems to boost the data rate by utilizing spatial multiplexing. Unlike RF systems in VLC, lighting requirements, such as dimming control, should be taken into consideration for the design of a VLC transceiver. Moreover, VLC systems are inherently nonlinear and dynamic-range-limited. To drive an LED transmitter, the signal is bounded by a turn-on value and a saturation value. In this letter, we show how the dynamic-range constraint and dimming control impact the design of MIMO transceiver. Three different MIMO schemes are proposed and studied by theoretical analysis and simulation.
