EXISTENCE OF ALMOST SPLIT SEQUENCES VIA REGULAR SEQUENCES

In the usual Krull-Schmidt-Azumaya theorem in abelian categories it is essential that each of the direct summands has a local ring of endomorphisms. A partial answer is given here to the case where this last condition is not satisfied by the indecomposable direct summands. It is found that those summands with local endomorphism rings are determined up to isomorphism and cardinality of occurrence.

Extended plus closure in complete local rings

We show that a pointwise finite-dimensional persistence module indexed over a small category decomposes into a direct sum of indecomposables with local endomorphism rings. As an application of this result we give new, short proofs of fundamental structure theorems for persistence modules.

Let P be an R-module with a decomposition P = M 1 ⊕⋯⊕M n , where each M i is a CS-module. In [6], a necessary and sufficient condition for P to be a CS-module for the decomposition is given, by introducing generalized relative injectivity.In this paper, we study the problem when a direct sum of uniform modules is CS for the given direct sum. In the case when each uniform module has a local endomorphism ring, this problem has been studied by several authors, e.g., Baba-Harada [2], Dung [3], Harada-Oshiro [5].

Let $R$ be a local one-dimensional domain, with maximal ideal $\mathfrak M$, which is not a valuation domain. We investigate the class of the finitely generated mixed $R$-modules of Warfield type, so called since their construction goes back to R.B. Warfield. We prove that these $R$-modules have local endomorphism rings, hence they are indecomposable. We examine the torsion part $t(M)$ of a Warfield type module $M$, investigating the natural property $t(M) \subset \mathfrak M M$. This property is related to $b/a$ being integral over $R$, where $a$ and $b$ are elements of $R$ that define $M$. We also investigate $M/t(M)$ and determine its minimum number of generators.

Krull–Schmidt categories and projective covers

Let Q be a complete local ring which has the same characteristic as its residue field P, and, for the present, let us denote by A the image of a subset A of Q under the natural homomorphism of Q onto P. Then a subfield F of Q is called a coefficient field if = P. It has been shown in [2] and in [3] that a complete equicharacteristic local ring, such as the above, always possesses at least one coefficient field; this is the embedding theorem for the equicharacteristic case.

A criterion is established, in terms of the Massey products structure carried by the homology of partial resolutions, for the Yoneda cohomology algebra ExtA(k, k) to be a free module over the universal envelope of a free graded Lie subalgebra.It is shown that several conjectures on the (co)homology of local rings, in particular on the asymptotic behaviour of the Betti numbers, follow from such a structure.For all rings with edim A -depths * 3, and for Gorenstein rings with edim A -depth A = 4, the following dichotomy is proved: Either A is a complete intersection, or xiA(k, k) contains a nonabelian free graded Lie subalgebra.0. Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring with the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$. Assume that $R$ contains ideals $I$ and $J$ satisfying the conditions (1) $I\subseteq J$, (2) $I : \mathfrak{m}\nsubseteq J$, and (3) $J$ is $\mathfrak{m}$-full, that is $\mathfrak{m}J : x = J$ for some $x \in \mathfrak{m}$. Then the theorem says that $R$ is a regular local ring, if the projective dimension $\mathrm{pd}_{R}I$ of $I$ is finite. Let $\mathfrak{q} = (a_{1}, a_{2}, \ldots , a_{t})R$ be an ideal in a Noetherian local ring $R$ generated by a maximal $R$-regular sequence $a_{1}, a_{2}, \ldots , a_{t}$ and let $\bar{\mathfrak{q}}$ denote the integral closure of $\mathfrak{q}$. Then, thanks to the theorem applied to the ideals $I = \mathfrak{q} : \mathfrak{m}$ and $J = \mathfrak{\bar{q}}$, it follows that $I^{2} = \mathfrak{q}I$, unless $R$ is a regular local ring. Consequences are discussed.

Let A be a noetherian commutative ring which is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring.The first result in this note is that A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring if and only if every finitely generated /I-module can be embedded in a finitely generated Amodule T which is pointwise of finite injective dimension (i.e.all localizations of 7"are of finite injective dimension).The second result is that if A is Cohen-Macaulay, then every finitely generated Amodule can be embedded in a finitely generated /(-module of finite projective dimension if and only if A is Gorenstein.Let A denote a commutative noetherian ring.As a running hypothesis we will assume that A is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring (a commutative noetherian ring R is Gorenstein if Rv has finite injective dimension as an /?p-module, for every prime ideal p of R; see [2] for other definitions equivalent to this one).However, this class of noetherian rings is rather extensive, since it contains most of the rings occurring in algebraic geometry, and, in particular, it contains the complete local rings, by Cohen's structure theorem [5].All modules will be finitely generated (f.g.), and for a f.g.A-module M and p g Spec A, depth Mp denotes (as usual) the maximal length of a Mpregular sequence in pAp, while grade M is the maximal length of an /(-regular sequence in Ann M. Furthermore, recall that a f.g.nonzero Amodule Q is said to be a Gorenstein module if Í2 pointwise is of finite injective dimension (i.e.inj dim Op< co for all p e Supp O) and depth Í2p= depth Ap for all p e Supp O. Since A is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, by assumption, there exists a Gorenstein /1-module which is of rank one (i.e.Hom(i2, D.) = A), if A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring (cf.Sharp [II], and see [10], [6] and [7] for further properties of Gorenstein modules).Theorem I.A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring if and only if every f.g.Amodule can be embedded in a f.g.A-module which pointwise is of finite injective dimension.

Small Cofinite Irreducibles

A commutative Noetherian local ring of finite global dimension is a regular local ring and the structure of such a ring is well described 1n many texts (see §1.9). It is perhaps surprising that very little seems to be known about the corresponding non-commutat1ve rings and it is our aim 1n this thesis to examine some of the ways in which the commutative theory can, and cannot be extended to a right Noetherian local ring of finite right global dimension. Chapter 1 contains basic definitions and, in Chapter 2, results are obtained on the projective and Injective dimensions of modules over right Noetherian local rings. Commutative regular local rings are domains and we begin Chapter 3 by considering the question of when a right Noetherian local ring R of finite right global dimension is a prime ring. An example of Stafford's shows that R is not necessarily prime; however, by examining the Nilpotent radical of R, we are able to extend results of Ramras [57] and Walker [75] and show that R is indeed prime when certain prime ideals are localisable. In Chapter 4 we consider the lattice of prime ideals of R when R is an AR-r1ng and provide theorems which generalise some of the basic results from the theory of commutative regular local rings. Section 4.3 contains examples which not only illustrate points arising in Chapters 3 and 4 but also show that some of the techniques which are mainstays of the commutative theory, fall dramatically in a non-commutat1ve setting. In Chapter 5, we generalise the concepts of regular sequences and Cohen Macaulay rings enabling us to prove, in §5.2 and chapter 6, that a right Noetherian local ring of finite right global dimension, which 1s integral over its centre, is a prime ring and exhibits many properties similar to those enjoyed by commutative regular local rings. Examples are provided which show that some alternative approaches are not applicable to the rings considered in these chapters. Regular local rings are Gorensteln rings and, as such, are the subject of an elegant structure theorem due to Bass [5]. In Chapter 7, we generalise his theorem to the situation of rings Integral over their centres. Each chapter begins with a summary of the results contained in that chapter.

Epilogue. References.Introduction. Completion is an important general mathematical device. Often, but not always, a completion takes the following form. Let A be a topological algebraic structure whose topology is derived from a metric. For A, a topological algebra  and an embedding i: A →  are constructed such that  is a complete metric space in which A is densely embedded by i. The long list of structures for which such completions exist begins with Cantor's construction of the real number field and includes objects like the p-adic integers, Baire space, and Boolean algebras. In Bourbaki [6] a careful and thorough account of completions for arbitrary topological groups and fields is given, for which it is important to note that the topological structures need not be metrizable, but must possess a uniformity.The effectiveness of the completion process of a computable structure A cannot be readily studied using the tools of computable algebra, simply because the resulting structure  is almost invariably uncountable. However, in particular cases, it has been possible to define and study the substructure Ak of computable elements of Â; this has been done for the structures mentioned above, starting with the field of recursive real numbers.In this paper we analyse the effectivity of the completion of a local ring R. We do this using structured Scott-Ershov domains. Our study may be considered as a prototype containing methods applicable to a broad class of completions, including all the examples mentioned above, except for the real number field, which needs a generalisation of the domain concept.A Scott-Ershov domain D formalises how a set Dt of possibly “infinite” elements, called total elements, is constructed from a set Dc of “finite” elements, called compact elements. This is achieved by means of an approximation ordering which determines a topology on D and, in particular, on Dt. Our methodology is to associate to a given topological algebra A a structured domain D(A) such that the total elements D(A)t form a topological algebra topologically isomorphic to A. In such circumstances A is said to be domain definable by D(A). The theory of computability for domains is now applied to study the effectivity of the topological algebra A.

Let $(R,m)$ be a complete Noetherian local ring, $I$ a proper ideal of R and $M$, $N$ two finitely generated R-modules such that Supp $(N)\subseteq V(I)$. Let $t\geq 0$ be an integer such that for each $0\leq i\leq t$, the $R$-module $H^i_I(M)$ is in dimension $<n$. Then we show that each element $L$ of the set $\mathfrak{J}$, which is defined as: $$ \{{Ext}^j_R(N,H^i_I(M)):j\ge0 \ and \ 0\le i \le t\} \\ \cup\{{Hom}_R(N,H^{t+1}_I(M)),{Ext}^1_R(N,H^{t+1}_I(M))\} $$ is in dimension $<n-2$ and so as a consequence, it follows that the set $$ {Ass}_R(L)\cap\{{\frak{p}} \in Spec(R): :\,\dim (R/{\frak{p}})\ge n − 2\} $$ is finite. In particular, the set $$ {Ass}_R(\oplus_{i=0}^{t+1}H^i_I(R))\cap \{{\frak{p}}\in \,{Spec}(R)\,:\,\dim(R/{\frak{p}})\geq n-2\} $$ is finite. Also, as an immediately consequence of this result it follows that the $R$-modules ${Ext}^j_R(N,H^i_I(M))$ are in dimension $<n-1$, for all integers $i,j\geq 0$, whenever $\dim(M/IM)=n$. These results generalizes the main results of Huneke-Koh [17], Delfino [10], Chiriacescu [9], Asadollahi-Naghipour [1], Quy [18], Brodmann-Lashgari [7], Bahmanpour-Naghipour [5] and Bahmanpour et al. [6] in thecase of complete local rings.
