Expert systems in telecommunications

Introduction. The article develops a dynamic expert system (ES) based on a model of a system for monitoring the technical condition of signal generators in telecommunication systems. In the proposed system, decision-making is based on a constant analysis of the parameters of the time-frequency parameters of signals generated by generators in infotelecommunication systems. The purpose of the work is to develop an expert system based on a model of a system for monitoring the technical condition of signal generators in infotelecommunication systems. Research results: In the course of the work, an analysis of expert systems was carried out, a dynamic expert system was selected from the real-time communication classification, the structure of the expert system was proposed, each of its elements was considered, an expert system was developed that allows predicting changes in the parameters of transmission channel generators in telecommunication systems, and the resulting expert system was tested based on two assumptions, which allows us to draw conclusions about the correctness of the development. For this purpose, the result of processing the input data is given based on two assumptions – the law of normal distribution and the uniform distribution law. On the basis of this, it can be concluded that the proposed developed version of the ES construction and the software product implementing it is working. The expert system makes it possible to analyze incoming data in the current time, as well as generate an output.

The role of telecommunication and mobile networks changes from a medium that connects people through voice to a complex system that affects almost everything in our life. It is not just connecting people but also connecting things. It also acts as a medium for many services in almost all domains including health, education, security, and other domains. As telecom network grows in a complex way and our needs for a stable and high-quality service grow every day, there is a necessity to improve network and telecommunication services quality and ensure service availability 24/7. Nowadays we are also heading towards the industry 4.0 revolution, which revolutionizes maintenance, quality, and productivity. Network predictive maintenance is an important research field to take corrective actions that prevent network failure. In addition to that having autonomous network and telecommunication systems that could adapt to traffic changes and customer changing behavior becomes an important research field. Machine learning has always contributed to the implementation of predictive maintenance of telecom networks along with the autonomous self-adapted network. In this paper, we survey predictive maintenance in the telecommunication field and mobile networks. In addition to that, we survey network self-optimization through self-organizing networks, network slicing, and software-defined networks.

This chapter is interested in discussing how to use data mining techniques to assist in achieving an acceptable level of quality of service of telecommunication systems. The quality of service is defined as the metrics which are predicated by using the data mining techniques, decision tree, association rules and neural networks. Routing algorithms can use this metric for optimal path selection which in turn will affect positively on the system performance. Also, in this chapter management axis using data mining techniques were handled, i.e., check the status of the telecommunication networks, role of data mining in obtaining optimal configuration, how to use data mining technique to assure high level of security for the telecommunication. The popularity of data mining in the telecommunications industry can be viewed as an extension of the use of expert systems in the telecommunications industry. These systems were developed to address the complexity associated with maintaining a huge network infrastructure and the need to maximize network reliability while minimizing labor costs (Liebowitz, J. 1988). The problem with these expert systems is that they are expensive to develop because it is both difficult and time consuming to elicit the requisite domain knowledge from experts.

This article quantifies the seismic performance of interdependent electric power and telecommunication systems, while also identifying variables with the highest impact on design. We introduce interdependent power and telecommunication models, which probabilistically simulate the physical dependency of telecommunication systems on power via interdependent adjacency and coupling strength, while a topology observability analysis quantifies the cyber dependency of the power system on telecommunications. We also use new functionality-based performance measures, including data congestion in telecommunications and partial observability in power systems, given communication demands upsurging after earthquakes. As an application, our methodology assesses the performance of stylized power and telecommunication systems in Shelby County, TN. Results show that neglecting retrials, congestion, and power interdependency lead to significant overestimation of the performance of telecommunication systems, particularly at low-to-medium hazard levels. Sensitivity results also reveal that decreasing the strength of coupling across systems is one of the most effective ways to improve the seismic performance of evolving cyber-physical systems, particularly when increasing observability in the power system through telecommunication end offices with richer data flow pathways.

Various methods for evaluating innovative activity in telecommunication systems and the principles for constructing algorithms for such an assessment are considered. Criteria of innovative activity, taking into account not only the quality assessment, but also the main accompanying factors, reflecting the essence of the assessment of innovation activity in general and telecommunications networks in particular, are singled out. The distribution of criteria for assessing innovation activity at different levels has been carried out. Expressions for determining the numerical values of these criteria are justified. An algorithm for evaluating innovative technologies in telecommunication systems is developed, based on the identification of the attendant factors that reflect the essence of innovation activity. The algorithm is presented by a set of formulas for assessing the quality, relevance and uniqueness of innovative technology, as well as the sequence of their definition.

Due to the tremendous growth in the evolution of telecommunication system and wireless networks, recent developments in telecommunication system and wireless communication technologies and mobile networks has posed various challenges to the researchers in the field of performance modelling. These challenges require effective performance evaluation tools, techniques and methodologies to design new protocols and robust solutions before a global and wide-scale integrated broadband infrastructure of convergent multi-service networks can be established towards the next generation of telecommunication system with efficient support of multimedia applications. As a result, performance modelling and evaluation has gained increasing importance. This special issue solicits papers on advances in the analytical and simulation based modelling and evaluation of new challenges in the telecommunication systems. Papers in this special issue were selected from the IEEE International Workshop on Performance Modelling and Evaluation in Computer and Telecommunication Networks (PMECT2008) in conjunction with the 17th IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks (ICCCN 2008), held in August 4–7, 2008 at Virgin Islands, USA. The education of students in the area of telecommunications systems engineering is of rising significance as global economies become ever more reliant upon telecommunications technologies and services. Notwithstanding its broad-based origins from within electrical engineering, the study of telecommunications systems is today recognized as an academic discipline in its own right. The University of Oklahoma (OU) - Tulsa is one of a select few that offers a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Systems under the aegis of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The degree has been designed with a common set of core courses: Telecommunications Industry Overview, Telecommunications Technology, Network Design and Management, Telecommunications Laboratory, and Professional Project. In addition, students may choose technical electives from among electrical and computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, and telecommunications systems courses. Students may also choose up to six credit hours of approved elective courses in relevant disciplines such as finance, telecommunications management, economics, and industrial engineering. A key resource supporting the program is the Telecommunications Interoperability Laboratory 1 , a facility designed to provide students with unmatched access to carrier-grade telecommunications technologies. Students entering the program are expected to have undergraduate preparation in electrical and computer engineering. This paper describes the curriculum and program goals, as well as the motivation behind their development.

Local and telecommunications systems LTS constitute an important new technology which is being increasingly deployed in modern organizations. Common applications include factory and office automation, laboratory research, and academic instruction. LTS figure prominently in electronic messaging systems, decision support systems, and, to a lesser but increasingly important extent, expert systems. This paper devotes particular attention to the behavioral and organizational implications of LTS technology. Relevant research issues which especially warrant empirical attention are identified and discussed.

The authors describe the metropolitan inter-office carrier expert (MICE), an expert system that pinpoints the cause of chronic digital carrier failures. Since different carrier equipment types are monitored by different operations systems, which are viewed by separate maintenance centers, carrier alarms caused by a single problem appear unrelated and are redundantly pursued. The authors discovered an expert who resolved the cause of failures by manually collecting and analyzing alarms from different operations systems. This alarm collection and analysis is reproduced by MICE. MICE illustrates the importance of system integration, alarm correlation and analysis, and expert systems to the maintenance of today's networks. >

The diagnosis of telecommunication networks remains a challenging task, mainly due to the large variety and volume of data from which the root causes have to be inferred. Expert systems, supervised machine learning, or Bayesian networks require expensive and time consuming data labeling or processing by experts. In this paper, we propose an Infinite Multivariate Categorical Mixture Model for clustering patterns of faults from data gathered from telecommunication networks. The model is able to automatically identify the number of clusters necessary to explain the data using the Dirichlet process prior. We show how to use Variational Inference to derive an Expectation-Maximization (EM) like algorithm to perform inference on the model. We apply our model on synthetic data generated from an expert Bayesian network of a Fiber- To- The-Home (FTTH) Gigabit capable Passive Optical Network (GPON). We show that the model discovers the patterns linked to the root causes of the faults with up to 96 % accuracy in an unsupervised manner. We also apply our method on real data gathered from the FTTH network and the local area network and demonstrate how the model is able to identify known faults.

Security of information is determined by the absence of unacceptable risk of leakage of information through technical channels, unauthorized and unintended effects on the data and other resources on the telecommunications system. To ensure the information security of telecommunication systems important task is to ensure not only the increasing demands of efficiency, but also to the reliability of data delivery. This paper presents a method of increasing the likelihood and speed of message delivery using indirect application server re-compression of multimedia information. As a result, reduce traffic less priority information in the telecommunications channel reduces packet loss probability and the time of delivery, which in turn improves the integrity and availability of information.

In this presentation we will review the main challenges facing the area of telecommunication systems and networks today. We will be covering issues in the areas of optical and wireless systems and networks. Study cases of attempts to produce some solutions will be discussed. Future trends in these areas will be provided.

Background The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and accuracy of a video telecommunication network to transmit coronary images to provide on-line interaction between personnel in a cardiac catheterization laboratory and a remote core laboratory. Methods A telecommunication system was installed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Kaiser Hospital, Los Angeles, and the core laboratory at the University of California, Irvine, approximately 40 miles away. Cineangiograms, live fluoroscopy, intravascular ultrasound studies and images of the catheterization laboratory were transmitted in real time over a dedicated T1 line at 768 kilobytes/second at 15 frames/second. These cases were performed during a clinical study of angiographic guidance versus intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guidance of stent deployment. During the cases the core laboratory performed quantitative analysis of the angiograms and ultrasound images. Selected images were then annotated and transmitted back to the catheterization laboratory to facilitate discussion during the procedure. Results A successful communication hookup was obtained in 39 (98%) of 40 cases. Measurements of angiographic parameters were very close between the original cinefilm and the transmitted images. Quantitative analysis of the ultrasound images showed no significant difference in any of the diameter or cross-sectional area measurements between the original ultrasound tape and the transmitted images. The telecommunication link during the interventional procedures had a significant impact in 23 (58%) of 40 cases affecting the area to be treated, the size of the inflation balloon, recognition of stent underdeployment, or the existence of disease in other areas that was not noted on the original studies. Conclusions Current video telecommunication systems provide high-quality images on-line with accurate representation of cineangiograms and intravascular ultrasound images. This system had a significant impact on 58% of the cases in this small clinical trial. Telecommunication networks between hospitals and a central core laboratory may facilitate physician training and improve technical skills and judgement during interventional procedures. This project has implications for how multicenter clinical trials could be operated through telecommunication networks to ensure conformity with the protocol. (Am Heart J 1999;137:241-9.)
