Extending the comfort zone

Abstract. The UPSCALE (UK on PRACE: weather-resolving Simulations of Climate for globAL Environmental risk) project constructed and ran an ensemble of HadGEM3 (Hadley Centre Global Environment Model 3) atmosphere-only global climate simulations over the period 1985–2011, at resolutions of N512 (25 km), N216 (60 km) and N96 (130 km) as used in current global weather forecasting, seasonal prediction and climate modelling respectively. Alongside these present climate simulations a parallel ensemble looking at extremes of future climate was run, using a time-slice methodology to consider conditions at the end of this century. These simulations were primarily performed using a 144 million core hour, single year grant of computing time from PRACE (the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) in 2012, with additional resources supplied by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Met Office. Almost 400 terabytes of simulation data were generated on the HERMIT supercomputer at the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), and transferred to the JASMIN super-data cluster provided by the Science and Technology Facilities Council Centre for Data Archival (STFC CEDA) for analysis and storage. In this paper we describe the implementation of the project, present the technical challenges in terms of optimisation, data output, transfer and storage that such a project involves and include details of the model configuration and the composition of the UPSCALE data set. This data set is available for scientific analysis to allow assessment of the value of model resolution in both present and potential future climate conditions.

Researchers can perform large-scale analyses on diverse computing and data infrastructures such as NGIs (National Grid Infrastructures), XSEDE (Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment) and PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe). Some are national like NGIs and XSEDE, some are international like PRACE and all of them require a more or less restrictive application process to get access to resources. Science gateways integrating diverse infrastructures provide the possibility to re-use methods independent of such underlying infrastructures and thus potentially deliver the technical prerequisite for creating reproducible science. To achieve this goal, science gateways have to be integrated seamlessly with security mechanisms and job, data as well as workflow management of the targeted resources. This paper gives an overview on general findings for porting science gateways as well as the challenges faced for porting the German MoSGrid science gateway (Molecular Simulation Grid) to exploit XSEDE and PRACE infrastructures.

SUMMARYThe UltraScan data analysis application is a software package that is able to take advantage of computational resources in order to support the interpretation of analytical ultracentrifugation experiments. Since 2006, the UltraScan scientific gateway has been used with Web browsers in TeraGrid by scientists studying the solution properties of biological and synthetic molecules. UltraScan supports its users with a scientific gateway in order to leverage the power of supercomputing. In this contribution, we will focus on several advancements of the UltraScan scientific gateway architecture with a standardized job management while retaining its lightweight design and end user interaction experience. This paper also presents insights into a production deployment of UltraScan in Europe. The approach is based on open standards with respect to job management and submissions to the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment in the USA and to similar infrastructures in Europe such as the European Grid Infrastructure or the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE). Our implementation takes advantage of the Apache Airavata framework for scientific gateways that lays the foundation for easy integration into several other scientific gateways. Europe is playing a leading role in building multinational, multidisciplinary e-infrastructures. Initially, these efforts were driven by academic proof-of-concept and test-bed projects, such as the European Data Grid Project, but have since developed into large-scale, production e-infrastructures supporting numerous scientific communities. To establish a production-quality e-infrastructure in a greenfield region like the Baltic region, a dedicated project was established, the BalticGrid project. According to the principle of think globally, act locally, the aim of the project was to build a regional e-infrastructure that seamlessly integrates with the international e-infrastructure of Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE). The establishment of a European e-infrastructure ecosystem is currently progressing along two distinct paths: European Grid Initiative (EGI) and the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) infrastructures. internetworking; smart grids

The ESPRIT programme has now been active for over a decade. One of the areas to benefit substantially from the injection of ESPRIT research and development funding has been the area of parallel computing and high performance computing in the framework of industrial applications for large and small enterprises. It is therefore appropriate that at this conference there should be two sessions dedicated to outcome of ESPRIT projects. A wide range of papers were submitted, and those selected represent state-of-the-art projects in various areas of interest. The projects break down into those which deal with the software required for making high performance computers more efficient and simpler to use and applications which can benefit from the use of HPC. In the former category are papers like the one on the HPF+ project that succeeded to demonstrate that HPF, with a small set of language extensions and an appropriate compiler and tool infrastructure, has the potential to be efficient for advanced industrial applications, sometimes approaching the performance of explicit message passing code.

The climatic data for various regions in North Cyprus have been analysed to obtain physical architectural building design specifications with a view to develop passive solar energy-efficient buildings. A computer program, ARCHIPAK (Architectural Package) [1] is utilised, together with climate data (25 year average) to get “comfort zones”, and “control potential zones”, for four stations representing North Cyprus fairly well, by virtue of their geographical locations. Our main aim is to provide appropriate information on physical architectural pre-design guidelines and choice of strategies to make better use of passive solar energy in urban planning and building design for better indoor “comfort” climate. The use of the control potential zones (CPZ) in building design and their objectives are discussed. Opportunities and limitations of the pre-design guidelines are also discussed.

Software product line companies increasingly expand their platform outside their organizational boundaries, in effect transitioning to a software ecosystem approach. In this tutorial, we discuss the emerging trend of software ecosystems and provide a overview of the key concepts and implications of adopting a software ecosystem approach. We define the notion of software ecosystems and introduce a taxonomy. Finally, we explore the implications of software ecosystems to the way companies build software.

<p>Modern companies need to revisit and constantly improve their business practices in order to remain profitable in the light of the global competition. Digital Ecosystems (DE) have emerged as an innovative approach to business because they transcend traditional collaborative environments towards an interactive digital environment with the intensive participation of diverse external actors. However, adjusting the existing business processes to the digital environment is not simple, especially taking into account the culture of the DE actors and the characteristics of such environment. The same issue applies when the ecosystem is focused on software development as investigated in a Software Ecosystem (SECO). In this context, this study aims to understand how the management of traditional business processes can be applied into DE or SECO management. To this end, a systematic mapping study regarding business process management in DE and SECO is presented. This study is important since it helps researchers and practitioners to understand how these processes can provide inputs for modeling relationships among the DE actors, besides providing support to ecosystem managers. The study confirms that the use of business process management techniques or methods as a support for DE or SECO managers or developers is an emergent field.</p>

Moving toward the third-generation (3G), wireless service providers (WSPs) have key decisions to make in evolving their backbone networks in a cost-effective way. Today, most WSPs in the United States deploy fully meshed, circuit-switched metro backbone networks and hand off long-distance traffic to an interexchange carrier (IXC). With the increased complexity of managing a growing meshed network and the emergence of enhanced data services, the goal is to evolve toward a multi-service packet network. This paper presents a rigorous model for circuit-to-packet (C2P) network evolution planning that addresses evolution alternatives for voice services, technology choice, network architectures, design, performance, reliability, and financial analysis. The model allows WSPs to quantify the benefits of various evolution scenarios and helps Lucent Mobility Solutions assess product roadmaps. The paper also presents a case study based on typical code division multiple access (CDMA) WSPs in North America that examines various C2P evolution strategies in metro, regional, and national backbones based on different choices of technology (TDM vs. ATM vs. IP), product availability, network architectures, and traffic forecasts. Also included are key insights and a summary of the study results.

Vaccination is a public health action that has a good impact on individual and collective health (MALAGUTTI, 2011). When a person is vaccinated, the population is also protected. The general objective of this paper is to present an experience report on the development of an Investigative Teaching Sequence (SEI) with key concepts about vaccine and vaccination, developed with students of the second year of High School Integrated with Health Professional in the PROEJA modality. The experiment took place in two classes of 50 minutes each, with students from the second year of the High School Integrated to the Health Professional of the PROEJA modality. The classes took place during the second semester of 2020 and remotely, through an instant messaging application WhatsApp group. The topic covered in the classes was Immune System and the content was vaccine and Covid19 vaccine. The theme and content were developed in the classes of the Biology discipline. A total of 17 students participated. And for the development of these classes, notebooks, smartphones and textbooks were used. At the end of the process of applying SEI to the development of teaching by inquiry, we can infer that placing the student at the center of the process is a challenging task and because of two variables that are difficult to manage, which are: 1st - The student away from the school floor has difficulty interacting with his peers and with the teacher and this creates a natural resistance to new ways of learning. 2nd - Innovative actions that take the student out of their comfort zone are always rejected at first.

The AMC&D program was formed in 1996 within PMA-209 to replace the AYK-14 within the F/A-18E/F. As the program has matured, other aircraft platforms, specifically AV-8B and T-45, have joined the effort. They will use portions of the AMC&D program hardware and software to meet their individual program needs. The reuse of these components was possible in part because of the During program definition, new requirements arose to replace cockpit displays that were experiencing DMS and would soon be unsupportable. The new displays will feature commercial high-resolution color digital displays modified for the military environment. Another addition to the program was a requirement to upgrade portions of the data bus. This upgrade brings a Fibre Channel network running on fiber-optic media to the F/A-18E/F. A key design feature of the program was to create a mission computer that could support a software environment that would dramatically reduce software maintenance costs. Recent flight-testing and software build efforts have shown that the program architecture and technology choices are on the right track to meet that key design goal.strict adherence to the system architecture, which includes an application program interface.

Genetic improvement has the potential to mitigate some 1-1.5 MT of GHG from the Irish national cattle herd, over the next 10 years. This represents approximately 25% of the target for the sector, as defined by the Irish government within its National Climate Action Plan. The reductions will come through a combination of current genetic trends, coupled with innovative new approaches such as: (1) increased weighting on female fertility traits in our indexes; (2) selecting directly on new methane EBV’s in future indexes; and (3) genotyping the national cattle herd. Given the major climate and environmental challengesthat lie ahead, we are fortunate to have such a proven technology at our disposal.

For wave propagation problems in infinite-domains, truncation of the far-field by an artificial boundary is essential to define a bounded domain of interest; resultant difficulties are the radiation condition and generation of incident waves. Instead of the radiation condition, an absorbing boundary condition (ABC) is implemented in an inhomogeneous exterior domain, based on the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. Complex coordinate stretching, a key PML concept, analytically continues a governing equation in the domain of interest into a PML equation as an anisotropic absorbing boundary in the exterior domain; a system of equivalent equations governs waves in the whole computational domain, and thus the PML is reflectionless at the artificial boundary, an interface between the PML and the domain of interest. For generation of incident waves, wave-maker modeling is proposed based on an idea of plain topography and wave-ray tracing. A source function along the interface is a curvilinear integral in a weak form for the governing equation. Finite element examples for wave propagation in one-dimension verify ability and efficiency of techniques with PML ABCs; besides, those for wave scattering by a circular cylinder on a slope show effectiveness of the wave-maker modeling.
