Implementation User-Centered Design in Agile Software Development: Systematic Literature Review

Tensions between software development methodologies and user-centered design (UCD) have always existed, but waterfall methodologies do provide a process context within which UCD methods can be clearly integrated whenever this is required. Popular agile methodologies such as Scrum create different challenges to integrating UCD. However, fitting UCD into agile methodologies will not necessarily result in high software quality. The combined approaches can still have significant design gaps that must be addressed by additional creative design practices. This chapter relates selected historical methodological trends to tensions between software and creative design. To resolve these tensions, innovative software development needs to draw on creative design practices in addition to UCD and agile methods. Specifically, innovative software development needs to draw on three key insights from design research: creative design work co-evolves problem and solution spaces; design materials talk back; and, the best design work is generous in scope and intent. These three insights are used firstly to structure a critique of the Agile Manifesto and secondly to provide the basis for proposing a balanced approach to software development that can appropriately integrate engineering, user-centered and creative design practices.

Competition in the business world in the era of globalization is now getting stronger. For that, a business requires a system that works efficiently and effectively. The Ganda Bakery is one of Pematang Siantar's special culinary delights which is well known among the people in the city and outside the city. Double Bakery is a legendary bakery that has existed since 1979 which is very crowded and in demand by people in the city and outside the city. Due to the large number of customers who come to the Double Bread Shop, so many new bakeries are trying to provide types of bread that resemble the menu in the Ganda Roti Shop, so that many new bakery businesses are opening to compete for customers at the Ganda Roti Shop. Therefore, by looking at the conditions and problems at the Ganda Bakery, it is necessary to have a media in the form of an online-based system to integrate ordering, marketing, and customer service that can manage the relationship between the company and its customers by creating applications with the CRM concept. In this study using the User-Centered Design (UCD) method is a new paradigm in the development of web-based systems. The purpose of using this UCD method is to overcome the problem of the user's inability to use the system, and it is hoped that the user will be able to know the function of the system only in one use. The UCD method involves potential users in the early stages of development so that potential users can provide input regarding the e-commerce system interface. The final result in building e-commerce is expected to produce maximum appearance and functionality and have usability values. So that UCD is very suitable to be used in developing and building systems effectively and efficiently at the Double Bakery.

Due to increasing interest in distributed agile software development, there is a need to systematically review the literature on challenges encountered in the agile software development environment.Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, 32 relevant publications, dated between 2013 and 2018 were selected from four electronic databases.Data from these publications were extracted to identify the key challenges across the system development life cycle (SDLC) phases, which essentially are short phases in each agile-based iteration.5 types of key challenges were identified as impacting the SDLC phases; these challenges are Communication, Coordination, Cooperation, Collaboration and Control.In the context of the SLDC phases, the Communication challenge was discussed the most often (79 times, 33%).The least discussed challenges were Cooperation and Collaboration (26 times, 11% each).The 5 challenges occur because of distances which occur in distributed environment.This SLR identified 4 types of distances which contribute to the occurrence of these key challenges -physical, temporal, social-cultural and knowledge/experience.Of the 32 publications, only 4 included research which proposed new solutions to address challenges in agile distributed software development.The authors of this article believe that the findings in this SLR are a resource for future research work to deepen the understanding of and to develop additional solutions to address the challenges in distributed agile software development.

Culture is the entire system of ideas, actions and results created by humans in social life that humans possess through the learning process. Introduction to traditional culture is an important part in maintaining and developing the identity of a society. In the digital era, the use of technology as a medium to promote traditional culture is very important. Mahograyasah art studio is one of the art studios or places to learn art which currently has problems, namely in the delivery of material. As a result, learning effectiveness decreases and participants have difficulty mastering the material well. The participants felt it was ineffective to receive the material directly and preferred to practice. However, due to the time and large number of participants, direct practice is difficult. Apart from that, the studio does not provide video tutorials for independent study at home, so participants only rely on learning when practicing in class. To overcome this problem, researchers used the User-Centered Design (UCD) method by developing a web-based prototype. Testing was carried out using the System Usability Scale (SUS). In this research, figma is used to design a website which contains dance material, dance videos, games and locations. The result of this research is a dance learning website prototype for the Mahograyasah studio. Based on prototype testing using the System Usability Scale (SUS) method, the average SUS score obtained was 88. 625. Thus it can be concluded that the Introduction to Traditional Culture learning website focusing on Dance has been accepted and meets the expected criteria. An optimized User Experience (UX) design plays a significant role in creating a comfortable browsing experience, ensuring good accessibility, and enhancing user satisfaction. This study analyzes the UX design of the Info Loker Karawang website by applying the User-Centered Design (UCD) method and evaluating the resulting prototype using the System Usability Scale (SUS) to assess the website’s ease of use. The UCD method was selected because it places the user at the center of the design process, enabling the development of solutions that align closely with users’ needs, expectations, and characteristics. This approach has proven effective in producing relevant and intuitive interfaces through stages of analysis, design, and evaluation involving active user participation. Following the design phase, the prototype was tested using the SUS instrument to measure how well the design solution met usability and user satisfaction criteria. The evaluation results indicate that applying UCD in website design significantly improves usability, achieving a SUS score of 72.5, which falls into Grade B and is categorized as “Good” on the adjective rating scale. This research provides insights into the importance of user-centered approaches in website development and demonstrates the effectiveness of SUS in evaluating and measuring the success of UX design outcomes.

Agile Methods have a distinct culture that at a first glance seems to conflict with User-Centered Design. However, the use of agile methods can result in improved usability of software systems. This tutorial aims to present and discuss the best practices regarding the integration of User-Centered Design and Agile Methods. We believe that the lessons learned from this tutorial can be really useful and applicable in both industry and academic contexts.

The rapid acceleration and advancement of information technology have significantly impacted the education sector, including higher education institutions. However, the implementation of existing systems has also introduced new challenges that are not yet addressed within the digitalization of information systems. One such issue is the absence of a dedicated platform for Student Online Complaint Services. This includes the lack of digital records as evidence and archives of complaints and issues raised by students, and the establishment of task forces such as the PPKS (Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence). Despite these efforts, there is no digital-based platform to facilitate online complaints. The objective of this research is to develop a requirement model and user interface design to support the design of a web-based system that serves as a platform for students to easily report issues encountered during their studies. It also aims to assist campus stakeholders in capturing all student complaints as documentation for internal evaluation. The methodology used includes Agile Development Requirements Engineering with the Scrum model and the User-Centered Design (UCD) method to address the identified issues and research objectives. The research outcomes include the development stages of the website, system requirements, requirement model processes, requirement specification, and user interface design. furthermore, the research tested the user interface design on a website prototype, achieving a score of 87.5, classified as Excellent under the Adjective Rating system.

An emergency can occur at anytime, anywhere and at anyone. The local government offers an application called “Panic Button” as a solution to these problems. This application aims to help people who experience or see emergency conditions so that they can be followed up by the authorities. However, this application has not been targeted for disability users. The procedure for using this application still has weaknesses that make it difficult for users with hearing loss, especially when an emergency event is confirmed. Normally, emergency events confirmation uses telephone calls to the incident reporter (user). This confirmation method is a big problem for those users with disabilities to be able to confirm the details of emergency events. In this research, a user interface re-design was carried out at the application interface to be able to accommodate the users necessary. The user interface modeling is done using the User-Centered Design (UCD) method to produce a user interface design that suits the user’s characteristics and limitations. USE Questionnaire was used to test the resulting prototype and results in a usability value of 87% with an excellent category after the third iteration. These results indicate that the results of the re-design that have been done have met the needs of the deaf, with the use of appropriate communication for people with hearing loss so that they can confirm emergencies properly.

User-centred Design (UCD) is an approach used to develop an efficient, effective and satisfying user needs application by putting the user in the centre of the design. The primary purpose of this article is to comprehensively analyse the previous research around education application developed through user-centred design methods and draw a map for the best practice for the UCD process. The findings allow education application user interface designers to improve student engagement, motivation, and performance of their application. Adding to the knowledge base of user-centred design applications across a wide range of learning contexts will establish if UDC design improvements made are universally applicable and effective.

In the past decade, there have been a number of notable changes in industrial software engineering, including the movement towards agility. The Agile Manifesto characterizes the term “agile”, and lists a set of principles that form a basis for agile methodologies [1], such as Extreme Programming (XP), OpenUP, and Scrum. There is creation, communication, and consumption of knowledge during (agile) software development [2]. For the success of an agile project, it is crucial that such knowledge be managed effectively. In doing so, an appropriate selection and use of certain tools and technologies can be helpful. In the past few years, there has been a proliferation of Social Web Applications, such as Wiki [3]. Indeed, a number of noteworthy uses of Wiki in software engineering have been reported [4]. However, these studies are largely independent of any software development methodology, and are centered mostly on collaboration. The primary reasons for selecting Wiki for agile software development include the following: (1) the deployment of agile methodologies, especially XP and Scrum, with teams that are increasingly geographically-dispersed, (2) the involvement in sustainable software development by organizations with basic infrastructure and modest budgets for resources, and (3) the need of inexpensive, mature, and widely-available tools for supporting iterative development, by almost anybody, at anytime, anywhere, using almost any device. The purpose of this research is to provide a framework for integrating Wiki for the purpose of facilitating the dynamics of knowledge during agile software development.

Software development methodologies offer a methodical way to working on projects in accordance with client expectations. In the software development process, the customer is seen as the main entity. In order to build valuable software quickly and within a given budget, firms are now seeking to implement customer-centric techniques. Customer satisfaction plays a crucial part in the development and deployment of software products. One software development process that helps to best fulfil changing customer requirements is agile software development. In the following part, a table of comparisons between the various agile modelling methodologies with regard to requirements and the role of the customer follows a discussion of agile methodology. The Scrum & Extreme Programming framework is presented, along with how different firms use the approach for projects of various sizes.

With increasing competition in the software market, software companies are using new management strategies to increase their competitiveness. In recent years, with the prevalence of agile methodologies in software development, paying attention to human resources, and selecting and managing talented human resources have become inevitable. This should be achieved by adopting appropriate talent management processes. However, in software engineering, talent management has not yet been seriously considered. Due to the critical role of agile methodologies in human resources, and the authority and freedom of individuals in agile teams, the benefit of talent management in these methodologies is vital. As a starting point, this article tries to provide a concise overview of talent management in agile software development and address the ambiguities and research gaps facing software researchers in this regard. The initial results of this study show that several ambiguities such as appropriate models of talent management applicable in agile methodologies, how to use them, effective factors in talent assessment, and the relationship between talent management and the quality of teamwork are some of the most noticeable research gaps in this area.

Disruptive ideas and innovative business models take shape from observing and investigating the needs and demands of potential users and measuring their success based on the acceptance by users and their satisfaction. In an educational context, a new mission of the university has emerged, supported by the transfer of open access knowledge through Institutional Repositories (IR); it is important to know the motivations and needs of the academic community to promote scientific dissemination using these platforms. The present article uses the method of systematic literature review: using 29 studies from SCOPUS and WoS, involving the topics User-Centered Design (UCD) and repositories. The results show that two of the three UCD phases—evaluation and requirements—are closely linked and are the reiterative focus of UCD; thus, it is desirable to promote the design of custom-made prototypes according to the users' motivations. It is necessary to redefine methodologies for IR development within open-access ecosystems to guide them towards meeting their potential users' needs and motivations.

Humanistic theory is famous for its view that humans are humans, meaning that humans are living creatures created by the Creator who have their own nature to stand on this earth. In addition, this theory is characterized by an effort to observe individual or student behavior from the angle of the student or the culprit, not from the teacher or observer. This scientific article was prepared using the systematic literature review (SLR) method. The SLR method is used to identify, review, evaluate, and interpret all available research with the topic area of the phenomenon of interest. Researchers selected 7 articles that were related to the keywords used from 2015 to 2023. Educational transformation that combines technological axiology and humanistic values in digital learning is a positive step to form a generation that is technologically intelligent and also equipped with strong human values. This kind of education is expected to create individuals who are able to face future challenges wisely and contribute positively to the global community.
