Improving lecture quality through training in public speaking

Communication is something that cannot be separated from various human activities. This is based on the need to convey and receive information. One of the communication skills that everyone needs is public speaking skills. In order to develop public speaking skills, LMI organizes public speaking training activities that present speakers who are experts in the field of public speaking. The purpose of research on these activities is to see the enthusiasm of the community and the impact of public speaking training activities. This study used qualitative research methods. The results of the public speaking training activities show that the community, especially young teachers and preachers are very enthusiastic about developing public speaking skills and having a good impact on self-confidence when practicing public speaking. Therefore, it appears that public speaking training is put to good use by the community to continue to develop skills in public speaking.

Public speaking or speaking in public is the most feared thing by most high school students. This fear is caused by a lack of interest in reading, lack of confidence, fear of being wrong, having bad experiences when doing public speaking and weak mentality, and excessive feelings of anxiety. Public speaking activities are not commonly done by high school/vocational high schools students, such as class presentations and group discussions. However, in delivering class presentations students do not yet have the skills to convey messages properly, because it is important for high school students to know how to speak in public to help convey messages properly, clearly, and precisely, and to prepare themselves for higher education, the environmental community and work environment. Therefore, the purpose of this PKM is to provide knowledge about the importance of public speaking, public speaking skills, improve public speaking skills, and public speaking training as a form of improving students' psychomotor skills. The methods that will be carried out in this PKM activity are seminars, practice, and students will be given modules as learning materials to improve their psychomotor skills. Community service in the form of public speaking skills training is important to be learned early on by high school / vocational students so that when presenting in front of the class they are more confident and can convey messages well as well as train themselves and prepare themselves for college and the world of work. The target of this community service activity is grade 12 students at SMK 6 Sempaja, Samarinda City, East Kalimantan. The output of this Community Service activity is published in national journals.

As engineering leadership has evolved, the need for more effective communicators and public speaking skills for technical leaders has become more critical. For employees that are often hired for their technical expertise, it is the non-technical expertise, such as effective communication with peers, subordinates and upper management, that is critical as they move up in leadership roles within the organization. Public speaking plays a significant role throughout an individual’s career from start to finish. As an early professional, the ability to communicate ideas and objectives clearly to others plays a vital role in how you are perceived by your peers and those in leadership positions. As a result, individuals with exceptional public speaking skills are better suited to continue their career progression.Though an important skill, engineers tend to rank poorly in their communication skills. An investigation led by a professional engineering association assessed the state of engineering education and determined recommendations to improve current curriculums and improve new graduate performance. Industry supervisors were surveyed to identify potential weaknesses of recent graduates entering the workforce. Almost half indicated that recent graduates were "weak" in oral communication skills. These findings help show that public speaking abilities are essential in engineers' early career development. The aim of this research study is to explore the utility of virtual reality (VR) and soft skill development through emotional intelligence (EQ) and mindfulness instruction in the context of developing effective engineering leaders within higher education for more effective communicators within the engineering field.For VR to be effective in public speaking training it should elicit similar responses as a live presentation. Various research studies have sought to determine whether or not the stressors experienced during VR sessions were indicative of similar stress responses an individual would experience in real-world scenarios. These studies found that the stress stimuli produced in a VR environment were like those in a real-life environment indicating the utility of VR experience to improve real-life performance.EQ can be described as an intersection of interrelated emotional and social competencies, skills that influence the ability to express emotions, connect with others, and the ability to cope with stress. EQ has shown that higher performers in the workplace tend to have significantly higher EQ scores. Better EQ skills allows for individuals to better cope with stress and connect with others. It is hypothesized that improving EQ will improve the physiological response and the perception of public speaking experiences.This study utilizes an exploratory action research approach. Subjects in this study completed EQ and DISC assessments, mindfulness instruction, and participated in two VR and one live public speaking presentation. Subjects wore a Fitbit Luxe device to collect physiological data during the VR simulated and live presentations. The VR software collected data such as speech analysis and head and eye movement.The purpose of this presentation is to present the results of a pilot study that investigated the extent VR and EQ can be considered tools to improve public speaking skills and experiences for individuals in the engineering field and b) students’ perceptions about the use of VR as a method for leadership development.

This research shows that in this digital era, education is required to switch from traditional methods to more innovative ways in improving students' abilities such as digital storytelling in learning public speaking at MTs Al Amiriyyah Banyuwangi is effective in improving speaking skills and understanding English texts. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving 2 public speaking skills teachers and 45 students from two classes at MTs Al Amiriyyah Banyuwangi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations. Data analysis was carried out thematically to identify themes such as student confidence and creativity. The validity of the data is maintained through triangulation, which involves the use of several data collection techniques, including in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. By combining these methods, this study is able to cross-check and validate findings, ensuring a more comprehensive and reliable understanding of the implementation of digital storytelling in public speaking training at MTs Al Amiriyyah Banyuwangi. The results of the study show that the application of digital storytelling has a significant effect in improving students' public speaking skills. This helps students understand the structure of the story, so that the speech becomes more organized and engaging. In addition, digital storytelling boosts students' confidence through visual and narrative elements, which makes them more comfortable speaking in front of an audience. This method contributes to the mastery of technological skills, such as video editing and presentation creation, that are relevant to the needs of the digital age.

The rapid development of information technology requires improved digital literacy and basic technological skills beginning at the secondary education level. One important competency that needs to be introduced to students is an understanding of computer networks, particularly Local Area Networks (LAN), along with the development of communication and public speaking skills as essential soft skills. This activity aimed to increase the interest and understanding of students at SMP Negeri 6 Sorong City regarding information technology through LAN network education integrated with public speaking training. The activity was implemented using an experiential learning approach combined with student-centered learning, which emphasized active student participation through material presentations, demonstrations, hands-on network cabling practice, and interactive discussions. The program was conducted in three main stages: preparation, implementation, and closing evaluation. The results indicated that students were able to follow all learning activities effectively and demonstrated strong enthusiasm in understanding basic LAN network concepts and cabling techniques. Additionally, students showed increased confidence in expressing ideas and actively participating in discussions. The integration of technical training and soft skill development created a more contextual, engaging, and practical learning environment. This activity also provided valuable experience for the community service team in strengthening communication abilities and applying academic knowledge in real educational settings. Overall, the practice-based LAN education program proved to be an effective approach for increasing students’ interest in information technology while simultaneously developing communication skills from an early age.

In Southern Leyte, thousands of elected/appointed male/female village officials and civic leaders give public speeches. Very few of them receive training in public speaking. Culture claims that male officials are better than female in decision making, running the village, leading an organization, setting disputes and giving public speeches as the father's decision in the family is final and his word is firm and executor. This study compares the speaking abilities of male and female village officials/civic leaders as to: manner of presenting speeches, self-confidence; thought organization, voice quality, eloquence, and audience impact. Officials/leaders of Sogod villages are trained in Public Speaking for ten consecutive Sundays at Mahayahay Public Stage. After every lecture, participants' speeches followed. During the culmination, every participant presented a public speech composed of opening remarks, welcome address, inspirational talk, closing remarks, introduction of guest speaker, interviewing, panel discussion, broadcast speech, necrological services and campaign speeches rated by three judges using pre-established criteria. Mann-Whitney Test, non-parametric test, used ordinal data to compare the male and female abilities in public speaking. Significant results showed that male and female officials have comparable manners of presenting speeches, self-confidence, thought organization, eloquence, voice quality, and audience impact.

This study investigates the efficacy and engagement of virtual reality (VR) as a tool for public speaking training. The primary objective is to qualitatively analyze the literature to understand how VR technology can enhance public speaking skills and increase user engagement compared to traditional training methods. The research employs a qualitative literature review methodology, synthesizing findings from academic articles, industry reports, case studies, and empirical studies to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in this field. The literature review methodology involves systematically collecting and analyzing scholarly sources that explore various aspects of VR in public speaking training. The study categorizes the literature into key themes, such as the effectiveness of VR in simulating real-life speaking scenarios, the psychological benefits of using VR for reducing anxiety, and the levels of user engagement and motivation in VR-based training programs. Thematic analysis is used to identify patterns and trends in how VR influences public speaking proficiency and participant engagement. The findings indicate that VR offers a highly immersive and interactive environment that can closely mimic real-life public speaking situations, providing users with valuable practice opportunities. Studies show that VR can significantly reduce public speaking anxiety by allowing users to repeatedly practice in a controlled, virtual setting. Additionally, VR-based training programs are found to be more engaging and motivating for users, leading to higher levels of participation and improved learning outcomes.

Good public speaking skills are essential in many professions as well as everyday life, but speech anxiety is a common problem. While it is established that public speaking training in Virtual Reality is effective, comprehensive studies on the underlying factors that contribute to this success are rare. The QUEST-VR framework for evaluation of VR applications is presented that includes system features, user factors, and moderating variables. Based on this framework, variables that are postulated to influence the quality of a public speaking training application were selected for a first validation study. In a cross-sectional, repeated measures laboratory study (N = 36 undergraduate students; 36% men, 64% women, mean age = 26.42 years (SD = 3.42)), the effects of task difficulty (independent variable), ability to concentrate, fear of public speaking, and social presence (covariates) on public speaking performance (dependent variable) in a virtual training scenario were analyzed, using stereoscopic visualization on a screen. The results indicate that the covariates moderate the effect of task difficulty on speech performance, turning it into a non-significant effect. Further interrelations are explored. The presenter’s reaction to the virtual agents in the audience shows a tendency of overlap of explained variance with task difficulty. This underlines the need for more studies dedicated to the interaction of contributing factors for determining the quality of VR public speaking applications.

Fostering elementary school children's public speaking skills: A randomized controlled trial

The study used such methods as the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, the interview method, discussions for feedback after student performances, generalization of pedagogical experience. After analyzing the literature on the research topic, as well as the experience of working and preparing students for mini monologues and public speaking by watching video stories in the style of Ted Talks and other speeches of speakers, we can state that working with such Internet resources is important for students to create motivation for learning a foreign language, broadening one’s horizons and training in public speaking, which today are of paramount importance for business, education and society. The methodological and psychological advantages of using videos in English classes with students of a non-linguistic university are indicated. The methodology of work in the classroom and within the framework of independent training of students at home is presented, the role of individual work, work in groups and consultations with the teacher is shown. Based on the results of the study, priorities have been identified that we define as key for use in preparing for public speaking.

The Teaching Campus Program is an activity carried out to assist teachers in carrying out learning, especially training students' skills in public speaking. Public speaking is one of the essential skills that young people need to develop, particularly to enhance soft skills such as self-confidence and effective communication. Many students still experience fear and anxiety when speaking in public, which often leads to passive participation in classroom learning. In response to this issue, this community service activity aimed to improve students' public speaking abilities through practice-based training. The program was conducted at Tarsisius I Junior High School in Jakarta and involved 8th and 9th-grade students. The implementation method included the delivery of material through interactive presentations using PowerPoint, followed by practical public speaking exercises in front of an audience. The program was evaluated through direct observation and the distribution of questionnaires to participants. The results showed that the majority of participants found the training to be both engaging and valuable. This activity demonstrates that public speaking training can serve as a strategic effort to enhance the quality of human resources and foster personal development among students.

Active and initiative professionals with leadership skills are in great demand in modern society today. The ability to effectively build communication, persuade and motivate others, explain different tasks and organize activities increases the competitiveness of graduates in the modern labor market. The article analyzes practical experience of developing public speaking skills among firstand second-year bachelors of humanitarian through academic mentoring during interaction with senior students in the foreign language educational process. The author presents the approbated forms of organizing interaction between students of different language proficiency levels with the purpose to teach public speaking and oratorical skills. The received results show the positive dynamics of development of bachelors’ presentation and public speaking skills, the obvious improvement of their oratorical skills, as well as formation of foreign language communicative competence in professional discourse

Public speaking is a fundamental skill essential for individuals, especially those who frequently interact with the public. The Waste Bank Community in Tambun Selatan, Bekasi, as the partner of this program, still faces challenges in delivering messages clearly, confidently, and persuasively during socialization and community presentations. To address these needs, the Faculty of Economics and Business, Trisakti University, organized a Community Service program focusing on training the basics of effective public speaking for Waste Bank members. The training methods included counseling, interactive discussions, presentation simulations, and role-play exercises based on real cases encountered by the community. Thirty members participated in the program, selected through recommendations from the Waste Bank administrators. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test to measure improvements in speaking techniques, audience engagement, body language, and self-confidence. The results showed significant improvement in participants’ public speaking skills, with average scores increasing from 50% in the pre-test to 83% in the post-test. Participants also demonstrated greater confidence in speaking publicly, better structured presentations, and improved vocal and body language techniques. This program proves that practice-based training effectively enhances community members’ public speaking skills. Future training initiatives are expected to be sustained to further strengthen communication capacity in conveying environmental messages to the broader community.
