So, discrimination of data becomes imperative and forwarding critical information on suitable routes becomes decisive. Hence, a quality of service (QoS)-driven mechanism is needed to handle and assign network resources according to the stringent application data traffic demands. But, VANETs high node mobility and frequent link failure, stuck a big challenge in implementing an effective policy to meet and enforce these QoS requirements. A promising way to tackle this issue is to enforce QoS at the network layer, since it is the crucial point in VANETs’ communication. So, over the years, many QoS-aware routing protocols were specifically conceived for VANETs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of QoS-aware routing protocols in VANETs’ literature. We examined the protocols based on their ability to support ITS infotainment services, their multi-constraint path problem (MCP), protocol’s functionality and weakness, objectives and design challenges. This way, we outline future directions for VANETs QoS-aware protocol research.

VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Network) is a significant term in ITS (intelligent transportation systems). VANETs are also mentioned as ITN (intelligent transportation Networks), which are used to enhance road safety in growing technology. The connectivity of nodes is a challenging one because of its high mobility and the sparse network connectivity must be handled properly during its initial deployment of a VANET for avoiding accidents. Quality of service (QoS) in VANET becomes a significant term because of its increasing dare about unique features, like poor link quality, high mobility, and inadequate transporting distance. Routing is the foremost issue in the wireless ad hoc network, which is used to transmit data packets significantly. This paper provides a crucial review of the classification of existing QoS routing protocols, cross-layer design approach and classification, and various performance parameters used in QoS routing protocols. The corresponding cross-layer protocols are overviewed, followed by the major techniques in cross-layer protocol design. Moreover, VANET is presented with many exclusive networking research challenges in precise areas such as security, QoS, mobility, effective channel utilization, and scalability. Finally, the paper concluded by various comparison discussion, issues, and challenges of several routing protocols for VANET. No. of publications over the period from 2010 to 2019 in various scientific sources also showed in this review. This survey provided the technical direction for researchers on routing protocols for VANET using QoS.

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is one of the developing paradigms that integrates the automotive industry with the Internet of Things (IoT). The evolution of traditional Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), which are a layered framework for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), is employed to provide Quality of Service (QoS) to end users in hazardous situations. VANETs can set up ad-hoc networks and share information among themselves using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) communication. Dynamic properties in VANETs such as dynamic topology, node mobility, sparse vehicle distribution, and bandwidth constraints can have an impact on scalability, routing, and security. This can result in frequent link failures, instability, reliability, and QOS concerns, as well as the inherent complexity of NP-hard problems. Researchers have proposed several techniques to achieve stability; the most prominent one is clustering, which relies on mobility metrics. However, existing clustering techniques generate overwhelming clusters, resulting in greater resource consumption, communication overhead, and hop count, which may lead to increased latency. Therefore, the primary objective is to achieve stability by increasing cluster lifetime, which is accomplished by generating optimal clusters. A nature-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm titled African Vulture Optimization Based Clustering Algorithm (AVOCA) is implemented to achieve it. The proposed algorithm can achieve load optimization with efficient resource utilization by mitigating hidden node challenges and ensuring communication proficiency. By maintaining an equilibrium state between the exploration and exploitation phases, AVOCA avoids local optima. The paper explores a taxonomy of the techniques used in Cluster Head (CH) selection, coordination, and maintenance to achieve stability with lower communication costs. We evaluated the effectiveness of AVOCA using various network grid sizes, transmission ranges, and network nodes. The results show that AVOCA generates 40% less clusters when compared to the Clustering Algorithm Based on Moth-Flame Optimization for VANETs (CAMONET). AVOCA generates 45% less clusters when compared to Self-Adaptive Multi-Kernel Clustering for Urban VANETs (SAMNET), AVOCA generates 43% less clusters when compared to Intelligent Whale Optimization Algorithm (i-WOA) and AVOCA generates 38% less clusters when compared to Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO). The results show that AVOCA outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in generating optimal clusters.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a multi-hop wireless network which involves vehicles acting as nodes to communicate with each other without infrastructural support. With the increase in Quality of Service (QoS) needs in evolving applications and the widespread use of wireless and mobile devices, it is desirable to support QoS in VANETs. The resource limitations and variability further add to the need for QoS support in such networks. However, the characteristics of these networks make QoS support a complex process due to rapid topology changes caused by high mobility of communicating nodes. Modulation scheme implemented in wireless network affect the data rate hence the throughput of the communicating nodes, this in turn affect QoS. The paper focuses on adaptive modulation to improve the data throughput and efficiency of channel spectrum in VANET. Through theoretical and simulation results, it was shown that adaptive modulation performs well and improves throughput than other modulations schemes when used singularly in dynamic changing network topology like VANET.

Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) applications become increasingly popular. Particular characteristics of VANETs profoundly impede the deployment of the VANET applications. Therefore, the merits of routing significantly affect the accomplishments of the VANETs. Though myriads of efforts have been made, the problems are partially solved. Quality of Service (QoS) requirements should be satisfied for various applications. Existing routing protocols are incapable of well satisfying distinct QoS needs. To remedy this problem, a next-hop selection scheme is proposed in this paper; which is able to select the next-hop node for various applications with diverse QoS requirements. Aspects including QoS type classification, link lifetime prediction, bandwidth evaluation, and next-hop node selection; are elaborately addressed in the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the proposed next-hop selection scheme promotes packet delivery rate, shortens end-to-end delay, and decreases signaling overhead in VANETs.

Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are a significant field in the intelligent transportation system (ITS) for improving road security. The interaction among the vehicles is enclosed under VANETs. Many experiments have been performed in the region of VANET improvement. A familiar challenge that occurs is obtaining various constrained quality of service (QoS) metrics. For resolving this issue, this study obtains a cost design for the vehicle routing issue by focusing on the QoS metrics such as collision, travel cost, awareness, and congestion. The awareness of QoS is fuzzified into a price design that comprises the entire cost of routing. As the genetic algorithm (GA) endures from the most significant challenges such as complexity, unassisted issues in mutation, detecting slow convergence, global maxima, multifaceted features under genetic coding, and better fitting, the currently established lion algorithm (LA) is employed. The computation is analyzed by deploying three well-known studies such as cost analysis, convergence analysis, and complexity investigations. A numerical analysis with quantitative outcome has also been studied based on the obtained correlation analysis among various cost functions. It is found that LA performs better than GA with a reduction in complexity and routing cost.

With the proliferation of vehicular technology, modern vehicles are fortified with ever more electronic maneuvers. This advancement ratifies the evolution of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)to provide services like shared travel, smart driving, on-the-go Internet, etc. As a traditional application of ITS, a Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) enables smart communication between vehicle nodes and network infrastructures to provide various expedient services such as road safety, data sharing, traffic management, parking assistance, entertainment, route recommendation, mobile payment, and even cloud applications. The high-speed mobile nodes (vehicles) in VANET perform very differently from other wireless communication networks and have a set of distinct features such as frequent link disconnection, highly dynamic topology, limited coverage area, and heterogeneous system architecture that may affect the performance and service quality of the VANET significantly. With this motivation, this work attempts to develop distributed cooperative cluster-based IDS to identify potential cyberattacks in VANET effectively. Firstly, this work develops a stable and reliable clustering method named Fuzzy Logic-based Clustering (FLC) to create a collaborative and reliable communication environment. A new fuzzy logic-based CH node selection algorithm is also developed based on node degree, average velocity difference, and relative velocity of the vehicle to create a more robust clustering structure with minimum cost in VANET

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET) are key to realizing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Although VANETs belong to the class of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET), and there are numerous routing protocols for MANETs, none of these protocols are applicable for VANETs. In particular, VANETs are highly dynamic due to high speed mobility of vehicles and traditional routing algorithms for MANETs cannot deal with such dynamicity of network nodes. Several comparative studies have suggested AODV (Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector), a well known MANET protocol that is adaptive to dynamic changes in network and makes efficient utilization of network resources, to be the best candidate for dealing with VANETs. However, verbatim adoption of AODV is not an efficient routing solution for VANETs. Recent works therefore proposed various modifications and/or additions to AODV to make it suitable for VANETs. It is particularly important to control congestion in VANETs by efficiently dealing with the AODV "Route Request" (RREQ) packets. In this paper, we propose Pro-AODV (Proactive AODV), a protocol that uses information from the AODV routing table to minimize congestion in VANETs, yet sustains other performance metrics at acceptable levels. The novelty and elegance in Pro-AODV comes from the fact that it does not require the execution of any additional logic, it is sufficient to know only the size of the routing table at each node.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is an integrated approach being developed to exchange relevant information to increase the safety and efficiency of the road transportation systems. Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET), a variant of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), is a core component of ITS. Performance of this smart ITS mainly owes to the design of efficient routing protocols in VANETs. Distinct features of VANETs like unsteady connectivity, high mobility and partitioning of the network have made routing of the information in VANETs difficult and challenging, hence dictating the development of efficient routing protocols. The computation of the best route measures the performance of communication whereas routing protocols takes care of communication & routing of the data. Provision of smart communication, necessitates the analysis of routing protocols in VANET. Accordingly in this paper we have reviewed various types of existing routing protocols in VANET, listing their advantages and disadvantages. Lastly possible inclinations of forthcoming research linked to VANET routing are discussed.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) play a pivotal role in the advancement of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), facilitating real-time communication among vehicles (V2V) and between vehicles and infrastructure (V2I). However, maintaining reliable Quality of Service (QoS) in these dynamic environments remains challenging due to high mobility, frequent topology changes and interference. This paper proposes a robust cross-layer framework that integrates channel prediction and dynamic rate adaptation to address these challenges. The framework employs advanced multi-user detection techniques, including matched filters, successive interference cancellation (SIC), decorrelators and MMSE receivers, combined with adaptive multi-factor spreading, multi-code and multi-modulation transmission strategies. The study evaluates the framework’s performance through extensive simulations using a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) platform. Key findings demonstrate significant improvements in packet reception rate, throughput and spectral efficiency under various mobility and channel conditions. The proposed approach effectively mitigates interference and adapts to dynamic network environments, showcasing its potential to enhance reliability, scalability and efficiency in VANETs. Future work will explore real-world implementation and iterative algorithmic enhancements to further optimize QoS delivery in highly variable vehicular communication scenarios.

VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network) is an ad-hoc wireless network which nodes are composed by mostly moving vehicles and infrastructure communications or access points along the road. It integrates adhoc networking, cellular technology, wireless LAN and other technologies, which include GPS(Global Positioning System), digital mapping, sensing technologies and advanced information processing tools to support Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS). VANET is developed mainly to improve road safety and to increase the traffic efficiency. It is designed to support the exchange of warning messages among the vehicles to increase the passenger safety and other information related to VANET applications and services . To achieve these goals, there are several issues that should be addressed. One of these challenges is designing reliable and efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for VANET. Due to VANET’s distinguishing characteristics, such as high mobility of the nodes, dynamic network topology, enough battery power, high processing power, etc, the MAC protocols designed for MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc Network) are not suitable for VANET. The research community has been working to develop MAC protocols appropriate for this ad-hoc network by proposing new design or modifying the existing one.In this paper, the VANET’s architecture, characteristics, applications and standard are discussed and then a comprehensive study of several MAC protocols available in the literature is presented.

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are a class of wireless networks built dynamically in an ad hoc network manner. VANET is a key technology for smart and Intelligent Transportation System. Efficient and intelligent algorithms for routing in VANETs are critically required for safety information propagation. Routing in highly dynamic VANET topology is important for the achievement of any vehicular safety applications. The routing mechanism in vehicular networks is critical because of VANETconstraints such as unpredictable network topology, frequent disconnections, varying network densities, etc. Multi agent scheme based routing scheme for VANETs is addressed in the paper. We address the challenge of how to route the data with short communication delay, overhead, and the complexity. Specifically, we consider the scenario for (V2V) vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Multi agent scheme consists of static agent and mobile agents. The scheme operates as follows: (1) establishing a connectivity pattern between the vehicles; (2) creating a set of beliefs; (3) desire development; (4) finalizing the intention. We validate the proposed scheme by simulation. Evaluated simulation results are packet delivery ratio, bandwidth utilization, and route identification delay.

Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) supports various ITS services, including safety, convenience, and infotainment services for drivers and passengers. Generally, such services are realized through data sharing among vehicles and nearby infrastructures or vehicles over multi-hop data routing mechanisms. Vehicular data routing faces many challenges caused by vehicle dynamicity, intermittent connectivity, and diverse application requirements. Consequently, the software-defined networking (SDN) paradigm offers unique features such as programmability and flexibility to enhance vehicular network performance and management and meet the quality of services (QoS) requirements of various VANET services. Recently, VANET routing protocols have been improved using the multilevel knowledge and an up-to-date global view of traffic conditions offered by SDN technology. The primary objective of this study is to furnish comprehensive information regarding the current SDN-based VANET routing protocols, encompassing intricate details of their underlying mechanisms, forwarding algorithms, and architectural considerations. Each protocol will be thoroughly examined individually, elucidating its strengths, weaknesses, and proposed enhancements. Also, the software-defined vehicular network (SDVN) architectures are presented according to their operation modes and controlling degree. Then, the potential of SDN-based VANET is explored from the aspect of routing and the design requirements of routing protocols in SDVNs. SDVN routing algorithms are uniquely classified according to various criteria. In addition, a complete comparative analysis will be achieved to analyze the protocols regarding performance, optimization, and simulation results. Finally, the challenges and upcoming research directions for developing such protocols are widely stated here. By presenting such insights, this paper provides a comprehensive overview and inspires researchers to enhance existing protocols and explore novel solutions, thereby paving the way for innovation in this field.
