International Conference on Design, Engineering and Computer Sciences 2018

We present our process and development of a web-based system to explore the publication networks of faculty in California public universities in the fields of computer science and electrical engineering. Our project explores collaboration networks in the fields of computer science and electrical engineering with a focus on publication networks and an analysis of these collaborations with a focus on geospatial organization (which institutions are collaborating with which other institutions). We present our data gathering process, which relies on the Scopus[9] database (Scopus represents a “comprehensive overview of the world’s scientific research output across all disciplines”), and we present the development of a web-based tool using python and the Google Maps API [12] in order to allow visualizations and explorations of geospatial structures of the publications networks. These visualizations drove further network analysis, which we present here as well.

The present research study aims to determine the virtual teaching campus’s effect on the competencies of teachers of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Systems and Computer Science of the Universidad Nacional Jose Faustino Sanchez Carrion - 2017. In addition, the research is applied, deductive method, quasi-experimental design of longitudinal cut and explanatory level. It was determined for the variable Virtual Teaching Campus dimensions such as technological infrastructure, quality of content, and web system, and the variable competencies of teachers the dimensions ICT and social competencies and methodological strategies. In every university, they are vital to improving the quality of teaching. On the other hand, an observation guide was applied as an instrument, validated by expert judgment reaching 91.4% and with acceptable reliability obtained through Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.981. The population comprises 65 teachers of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Systems and Computer Science; we used a census sample because the population was small. Furthermore, the Student’s T statistical method was applied. The results obtained show, with 95% confidence, that there is a high positive significant influence (p=0.000 and α=0.05) produced by the use of the Virtual Teaching Campus on the competencies of the teachers of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Systems and Computer Science of the Universidad Nacional Jose Faustino Sanchez Carrion - 2017.

Industrial Design Engineering is an inherently complex discipline, bringing together a variety of knowledge and skills. Our programme at the University of XX is rooted and located in a faculty of Engineering Technology and at the same time benefitting from the influx of knowledge from the faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences and our sister faculty of Electronic Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Therefore our programme comprises of gamma- and beta topics, envisioned by the former marketing slogan of our university “High Tech - Human Touch”. In this context we developed an integrated full time module of fifteen European Credits for the first quartile of the Bachelor. Keeping in mind that this first encounter of the freshmen would set the standard for the rest of their studies we set our selves the task to develop an agile module that offers the scope of topics and integrates them directly in short design sprints. To aid the students in navigating the complexity of their future discipline we created a strong frame for the programme, inspired by the frame-creation method by Dorst. In line with the slogan of our university and the applied character of engineering we settled for ‘making technology available for people’ as central objective. For the students to be successful in this task, they should become ‘bilingual’. Therefore we crafted a module that ‘frames the students as future Industrial Design Engineers with both the language of engineering (=mathematics) and the language of design (=visual)’.

Although Germany and Japan are top-ranking in STEM, women are underrepresented in the STEM fields of physics, engineering, and computer science in both countries. The current research investigated widespread gender-science stereotypes in STEM in the two countries (Studies 1 and 2) and negative consequences of expected backlash (i.e., imagining negative reactions and lower ascribed communion in scenarios) for women’s emotions and motivation in STEM due to role incongruity and lack-of-fit (Study 3). Studies 1 (N = 87) and 2 (N = 22,556) showed that explicit and implicit gender-science stereotypes are widespread and comparable in Germany and Japan. Study 3 (N = 628) showed that lower ascribed communion was related to less positive emotions, more negative emotions and anxiety emotions, and less study motivation for STEM students (from the fields of physics, engineering, and computer science) from Germany and Japan. Results point to more subtle expected backlash effects for women in STEM than hypothesized. Theoretical and practical implications for gender equality in STEM are discussed.

Use of dictionaries is an integral part of language learning and teaching. With the availability of smartphones, EFL, ESL and ESP students can access and download a variety of specialized mobile dictionaries Apps (MDAs). Specialized MDAs are of special importance for students learning English for engineering, business, and computer science purposes. They contain thousands of essential specialize technical terms covering several sub-categories within the engineering, business and computer science fields. They are a good tool for enriching the students’ specialized vocabulary and helping them learn faster and remember more in a shorter time. This article aims to show ESP instructors examples of engineering, computer science and business MDAs available in the Google Play or Apple Stores; how specialized MDAs can be located; criteria for selecting specialized MDAs; the lexicographical features of specialized MDA and instructional stages with MDAs. Instruction with MDAs goes through three stages: pre-task, task, and post-task phases. The instructor serves as a facilitator. She can help students find and download MDAs that meet their needs and purposes and match their proficiency level; gives pre-questions; and follows the students up to make sure they are making the best use of MDAs. The article concludes with some recommendations for ESP pedagogy with MDAs.

The current study underlines the main problems students deal with in the first academic year at University POLITEHNICA of Timişoara (UPT) while adjusting to the higher education environment. The adaptation challenges were investigated through 14 panel discussions. The topic assigned was “Students’ adaptation problems in Romanian higher education”. The target group included students in their first academic year, studying at the Faculty of Computer Science (CS), Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering (EE&PE); Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ETIT); Industrial Chemistry and Environment Engineering (ICEE); Mechanics (ME); Production Management and Transport (PMT); Architecture and Urbanism (AU), also doing the Psychological and Pedagogical Training Program. Each panel discussion was made up of 20 students, all 14 panel discussions summing up 280 students, out of which 158 female and 122 male students. The outcomes of the research show that students face different adaptation challenges that may result in a poor insertion into the academic system and education dropout. The adaptation problems identified by the students were diverse: accommodation and food; financial problems; school timetables and calendars (seminars, courses, laboratories and other instructional activities); teacher-student relationship; the teaching-learning-evaluation process, location of study; education for students with special needs and disabilities; administration and secretariats. The present study analyses these queries in order to facilitate the smooth insertion of students into the academic environment and increase student retention.

Possibilities for Organizing Group Work for Computer Science Students

The C* Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (C3S2E) was established in 2008. C3S2E 2010 is the third annual meeting in the C3S2E conference series and is held in Montréal, Québec, Canada, during May 19-20, 2010. The conference aims to address the need of the academic community in computer science and software engineering. It brings together academics, government and industry professionals to discuss recent progress and challenges in a broad range of areas in the field of computer science and software engineering such as algorithms and theory, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computer architecture, computer graphics, computer security, computer vision, data mining, databases, image processing, information retrieval, machine learning, as well as software engineering. C3S2E 2010 also serves as a platform for theoreticians and practitioners to exchange their original research ideas on academic or application aspects of computing and engineering of software systems, present their new findings on theoretical or practical aspects of computer science and software engineering, share their experiences on integrating new technologies into products and applications, discuss their work on applying computing and software engineering to real-life situations, describe their development and operations of challenging computing related systems, and identify unsolved challenges. Although it is the third time C3S2E is held, this comprehensive conference has grown from a Canadian conference into an international conference. For C3S2E 2010, we continue to keep our tradition for inviting international experts in various areas of computer science and software engineering to join our team of international program committee. As a result, our Program Committee consists of professionals from different parts of the world including Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Portugal, South Korea, Turkey, UAE, and UK. This committee has done an excellent job in finishing the single-blind review and on-line double-blind debate processes in record time. On average, about 90% of reviews were submitted by the due date and about 3.67 reviews were received for each paper. In terms of submissions, we have attracted many high-quality papers submitted by authors globally. The paper selection process was thorough and competitive. On average, each paper was refereed by at least three reviewers, and about 18% of submissions were accepted as full research papers. This year, we have an intensive program that spans over two days. In addition to research papers and student posters, we also include position papers, which allow authors to give their opinions and vision on exploring new concepts and research directions.

Progress in the fields of computer science and computer engineering has put considerable strain on academic departments to keep the curricula abreast of the "state of the art." This is a constant demand to modernize courses and programs. This usually takes the form of continually adding new courses, and including new material in existing courses. Our solution at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been to share the curriculum between the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering wherever possible. The teaching of Assembly Language programming is an example of a course taught to both Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering majors. The course has two semesters of Pascal programming as prerequisites.

Queueing Network Models (QNMs) with Finite Capacity provide powerful and realistic tools for the performance evaluation and prediction of discrete flow systems such as computer systems, communication networks and flexible manufacturing systems. Over recent years, there has been a great deal of progress towards the analysis and application of QNMs with finite capacity, and high quality research work has appeared in diverse scientific journals of learning and conference proceedings in the fields of Operations Research, Computer Science, Telecommunication Networks, Management and Industrial Engineering. However, there are still many important and interesting finite capacity queues and QNMs to be resolved, such as those involving multiple-job classes, bounds and theoretical properties, exact analysis, numerical solutions and approximate methods, as well as application studies to computer and distributed systems, high-speed networks and production systems. This volume of Annals of Operations Research on Queueing Networks with Finite Capacity presents 17 extended research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting current original contributions in the theory and applications of finite capacity queues and networks worldwide. Earlier short versions of these papers were amongst those presented at QNets '95, The Third International Workshop on Queueing Networks with Finite Capacity, 6th-7th July, 1995, Ilkley, West Yorkshire, UK. The papers are classified into four parts covering exact analysis, approximate methods, error bounds and performance modelling studies.
