IoT Based Low-Cost Smart Home Automation and Security System Using Wireless Technology

Internet of things and Automation systems have taken over the world at present times. Home security has always been a field of concern among mass people. Making home security systems safer, cheaper and easy to understand is a challenge that many engineers around the world are striving to achieve in developing countries. Considering the economic condition of people of a developing country like Bangladesh, we propose an IoT based smart home security and automation system named `Facebook messenger Chatbot' which is made using Raspberry PI as the central processor. It will enable its users to use it free of cost as Facebook messenger app is free in Bangladesh. People can use it from home or any remote location and can control digital home appliances like fans, lights etc. Smart door locking system, face recognition, gas leakage detection, temperature detection and control, humidity detection, fire detection, which has been done through collecting data from different sensors and passing them to Raspberry PI and then PI passes these to the BOT through a REST API, are the additional features that make our security system safer, effective and easier to use compared to other existing approaches.

Smart home security and safety systems have gained more importance in recent years. This is attributable to their significant impact in reducing and preventing loss of assets and human life. The COVID-19 pandemic adds a new dimension to home security as potentially infected people or those not taking necessary precautions such as sanitization or wearing masks may enter homes and cause further transmission. The traditional security systems are effective in conventional scenarios but require human intervention and contact which can lead to the spread of the virus. This necessitates the development of smart security systems that are autonomous and contactless. This paper presents a novel IoT enabled home security system that restricts unauthorized access and at the same time ensures that permitted users are normothermic and are following proper COVID hygiene. The proposed system is a smart edge device that does not require a cloud platform for its computational needs. Facial recognition is used to authenticate and allow approved users to get access. If an unfamiliar person tries to enter the premises, the system takes a photo, computes mask detection on the image, measures temperature and sends these three data points as a WhatsApp notification to the administrative user. The door lock can then be controlled automatically or remotely using a WhatsApp bot.

An intelligent security system that provides a high level of home security using visual surveillance is developed and explored in this paper. This will be very much useful in home and company automation. The main processing unit is a cortex ARM processor with Linux operating system and the board we are using is Beagle Bone Black (BBB). Surveillance system is achieved using OpenCV(open source computer vision) and the communication system is designed by using GSM(Global System for Mobile Communication) Module. Total number of people in a room is counted by using the OpenCV. The user while leaving the premises can give voice command to make the system active. The system continues automatic surveillance when the user left the house or office. It can be modified to turn on automatic surveillance at a specific time of the day. If the user left the premises and the system detects the presence of a human being in there then an SMS will be sent to the Cell phone of the user and the alarm will be turned on. After turning on the alarm the system will start recording video on the SD card so the user can inspect later. The system can also count the number of people in the room by using image processing algorithm and will automatically turns off all the load in the room when no one is present. This will also help to reduce the unnecessary wastage of power.

Easy Home or Home automation plays a very important role in modern era because of its flexibility in using it at different places with high precision which will save money and time by decreasing human hard work. Prime focus of this technology is to control the household equipment’s like light, fan, door, AC etc. automatically. This research paper has detailed information on Home Automation and Security System using Arduino, GSM and how we can control home appliances using Android application. Whenever a person will enter into the house then the count of the number of persons entering in the house will be incremented, in Home Automation mode applicances will be turned on whereas in security light will be turned on along with the alarm. The count of the number of persons entering the house is also displayed on the LCD screen. In Home Automation mode when the room will become empty i.e. the count of persons reduces to zero then the applicances will be turned off making the system power efficient. Moreover a person can control his home appliances by using an android application present in his mobile phone which will reduce the human hard work. At the same time if anyone enters while security mode is on a SMS will be sent to house owner’s mobile phone which will indicate the presence of a person inside the house.The alarm can be turned of using SMS or Android application.

This For high dimensional dataset processing Security has been becoming an important issue everywhere. Every individual wants his home, industry, bank secured. Home security is becoming necessary. Now days as the possibilities of theft are increasing day by day. Hardware of this system has been designed using microcontroller , IR (Passive Infra Red) motion sensor as the primary sensor for motion detection, a Wifi module ESP8266 to connect and communicate using the internet, keypad and buzzer for alarm. This Security System can monitor home space that is surrounded by IR sensor by sending SMS, and make people panic by turning on the buzzer when passing nearby area that detected by IR sensor. The Home Security System has been tested and can successfully detect human movement.Smart home safety and security systems have gained much importance over the last few years owing to their notable impact in reducing and preventing losses in resources and human life caused by unwanted situations that could occur while homeowners are far away from their homes.

Z-Wave is one of the key access protocols of the Internet of Things (IoT). It is highly popular in home automation and security system applications due to its minimum power consumption, reliability, and cost effectiveness. With an estimate of over 100 million deployed Z-Wave devices around the globe, it is essential to understand their security landscape. For instance, Z-Wave devices can leak personal information about the home dwellers as well as their possessions and buglers can use compromised Z-Wave devices to disable security systems or even to feed incorrect information. In this paper, we present an experiment setup and early results of side-channel information leaks of Z-Wave. We show that Z-Wave traffic despite being encrypted, leaks information through side-channels and an attacker who can passively capture Z-Wave frames by simply being in the vicinity of a house can identify Z-Wave devices inside the house.

This study is a qualitative study with a descriptive approach, namely describing each main object used in this study, including the Internet of Things, Smart Room Customization, and Service Quality. The data used in this study are secondary data that researchers obtain from various credible sources such as books, scientific articles, credible websites, and various other research sources. The data obtained are analyzed by stages of data collection, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The result in this aticle show. the Internet of Things can create smart Room Customization. Smart Room Customization is built using the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), a concept where an object has the ability to receive and send data over a network without requiring human interaction to a computer. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that aims to expand the benefits of continuously connected internet connectivity. Kaur, Singh, Khairwal, & Jain conducted a study on the Home Automation and Security System with the GSM communication method and Android Application, the system can control equipment and help protect thieves because there is an alarm and can send signals to the owner using Android [. Giorgos Sfikas also conducted a study Creating a Smart Room using an IoT approach, a study that explains the concept of building a Smart Room using Arduino and a Bluetooth module to control electronic equipment. In the end, the benefits that the researcher mentioned above serve to facilitate customers in accessing, utilizing facilities, and other things that can facilitate customers to travel and stay in an integrated place and hotel. The convenience that the researcher mentioned above is one form of improving the quality of tourism services.

This paper describes a system that comprises of control, safety and security subsystem for industries and homes. The entire system is based on the Bolt IoT platform. Using this system, the user can control the devices such as LEDs, speed of the fan or DC motor, monitor the temperature of the premises with an alert sub-system for critical temperatures through SMS and call, monitor the presence of anyone inside the premises with an alert sub-system about any intrusion through SMS and call. If the system is used specifically in any industry then instead of monitoring the temperature any other physical quantity, which is critical for that industry, can be monitored using suitable sensors. In addition, the cloud connectivity is provided to the system using the Bolt IoT module and temperature data is sent to the cloud where using machine-learning algorithm the future temperature is predicted to avoid any accidents in the future.

Home automation is a modern technology that helps to enjoy comfortable living conditions inside the home. With home automation, data can be instantly collected and passed between devices and analyzed simultaneously. By connecting the home appliances with the internet, they can be easily accessed from anywhere. In the home automation system, settings are feasible through smartphones or other remote-control devices. This paper gives the design and implementation of a new voice- controlled home automation system that uses Google Assistant for giving user’s voice commands as input. It is a low cost and flexible home automation and monitoring system. It enables the user to use a home automation system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). Home appliances like fans and lights can be controlled. The fundamental purpose of this project is to control electronic appliances based on the situational demands of the user.

Ofcourse, there are some challenges and considerations to keep in mind when it comes to WiFi-enabled smart home automation systems. Privacy and data security are top concerns, and interoperability and compatibility issues must be addressed to ensure that these systems remain flexible and adaptable to the evolving needs and preferences of homeowners. Additionally, user-friendly interfaces and intuitive design principles are essential for ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience. In this research paper, we aim to explore the transformative potential of WiFi-enabled smart home automation systems and provide constructive insights into how we can overcome the challenges and considerations associated with this technology. By shedding light on the opportunities, challenges, and best practices associated with these systems, we hope to empower homeowners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders alike to make informed decisions that enhance the quality of life while safeguarding privacy, security, and sustainability.

Today, when technology is getting more and more progressive, there is growing demand for automation. In automation systems we can include home automation systems. Within home automation systems the most commonly embedded systems are: security system, temperature control system, lighting control system and etc. Control of these systems are most commonly realized using wireless communication. In this paper is described smart home system controlled by the ATmega2560 microcontroller. Smart home system beside microcontroller, also has a SIM900 GSM module that enables remote control of a smart home using SMS messages. The smart home security system consists of: security system based on IR sensors located on windows and security system based on password protection located at the front door. In the event of a security breach, an alarm with visual and audible warning signals is activated and an SMS message about the security breach is sent to the user. The lighting control system is controlled by SMS message. The user sends SMS messages that turn on/off lights in individual rooms of the smart home. The user also has the ability to turn on/off individual lighting groups in the smart home. The motion sensor is used to detect movement outside the smart home. When the motion sensor is activated, outdoor lighting turn on. The use of systems based on microcontrollers and GSM, according to research, represents a serious competition to earlier systems in terms of price, reliability and ease of use.

With the increasing application of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in home automation, the prospect for home security has become even more integral. While there have been many notable developments in the field of smart home security systems for the past decade, the possibilities to develop and employ a multitude of features for an IoT based security system keep growing. Our proposed design introduces a cheap IoT based home security system that enables the user to have complete control over the system remotely as well as get live video feedback over the internet by using our custom- designed android application. The android application utilizes a real-time database (Firebase) for interpreting the sensor data. The android application also provides other features such as – password management, activation or deactivation of the system and alert option. The security system combines a motion sensor and a camera module for intruder detection and alerts the user instantly through an online alert notification. For evidence purposes, snapshots of the intruder can be taken during live video monitoring from the android application. Additionally, a GSM module is used to send an SMS alert about the intruder over the cellular network.

Home automation systems (HAS), leveraging the power of the Internet of Things (IoT), are gaining significant attention for their potential to reduce costs, labor, and human error. As the demand for smart home technologies grows, effective energy management and cost reduction become increasingly important. This research explores the technical landscape of IoT-based HAS, focusing on remote control and management of home appliances through smartphones and dedicated applications. A comparative analysis of various HAS solutions will be conducted to evaluate their functionality, usability, and energy efficiency. Additionally, the study will examine the security and privacy implications of IoT-based home automation and potential barriers to adoption such as cost and complexity. By addressing these key issues, this research aims to contribute to the development of more effective and accessible smart home solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Automation developments have significantly increased general convenience in modern technology. Our study focuses on developing and deploying an Internet of Things (IoT)–enabled smart home automation system that maximizes energy efficiency and improves convenience in residential settings. Our technology provides homes with an intelligent environment by smoothly combining several sensors, actuators, and communication protocols. We explore the challenges of creating a reliable and useful smart home systemthat works well in everyday situations. We investigate the difficulties, architectural issues, communication protocols, and security features specific to these systems.OBJECTIVES: This project aims to use a database server and Wi-Fi module to develop an effective and reasonably priced smart home automation system. It improves accessibility and convenience by enabling smartphone voice control of household appliances.METHODS: This project was developed using various implementation techniques, including wireless home automation via GSM technology, speech recognition-based systems, Blynk, and the Internet of Things. These techniques added up to a reliable and effective smart home system.RESULTS: Although it improved user routines, the IoT-based smart home system had latency problems. Interoperability issues are still present. Improvements were guided by user input. Using Blynk, our software manages loads remotely. CONCLUSION: A home automation system that is inexpensive and locally supplied can effectively operate household appliances. It is adaptable, scalable, and a component of future smart homes. IoT applications in real life revolutionize convenience and efficiency in living environments.

Automated secure entry is a basic need in today’s Home Automation System. To accomplish this need, we are proposing secure home entry system using Internet of Things. This proposal is an attempt to construct a smart, innovative and secure entry by using the raspberry pi controller, camera and various other associated sensors. To enhance the home security system, the best possible way is to use facial recognition and has been implemented in our proposal. In existing system, notification is through E-mail or Twitter account. Due to popularity and flexibility of using current social network for all type of generation, we are proposing home security system using Telegram notification. The advantage of using Telegram App for this project is to send notification to the user as it provides an instant secure communication between the user and the home automation system.
