Learn for Yourself: The Self-Learning Tools for Qualitative Analysis Software Packages

Purpose This paper aims to explore the potential of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) to be used as a corruption investigation tool to help investigators in carrying out their investigative works. Design/methodology/approach By reviewing the literature on qualitative research and fraud investigation, this exploratory study identifies similarities between the two types of inquiries and thus proposing the use of CAQDAS as an innovation in the field of corruption investigation. To demonstrate how a QDA application can support corruption investigators, NVivo is used as a case study from which various key analytical tools are discussed to highlight their potential in supporting a corruption investigation. Findings As a fundamental part of anti-corruption practice in a country, corruption investigation must be planned and executed professionally and adequately. This paper highlights various stages in fraud investigation to identify areas that can be improved with the use of a CAQDAS. Based on the discussion in this paper, the author concludes that the capability of a CAQDAS to assist users in data reduction and data display has the potential to increase the effectiveness and efficiency in various stages of a corruption investigation. Research limitations/implications Based on a self-funded study, this paper only uses a simulation case with a fictitious company to illustrate how a CAQDAS application can be used to support a corruption investigation process. Future studies may benefit from using actual corruption cases in illustrating how such an application can support the investigation process. Practical implications This paper contributes to the innovation in anti-corruption practice by proposing a new framework and tool to develop corruption investigation capacity. Originality/value This paper brings a new perspective into the field of anti-corruption to stimulate innovation in the area of corruption investigation.

Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) may be defined as tools that help researchers developing qualitative research projects. These software packages help the users with tasks such as transcription analysis, writing and annotation, coding and text interpretation, recursive abstraction, content search and analysis, discourse analysis, data mapping, grounded theory methodology, among several other types of analysis. This paper surveys the most relevant CAQDAS software packages comparing their features on different areas such as data management and organization, data annotation, search and query capacities, data visualization, import/export potentialities and teamwork/ collaborative work features.

This paper explores the potential of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), specifically Nvivo 14, in facilitating the qualitative evaluation of multiple case studies. The focus is on halal purchasing strategies within micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in the food industry, a critical issue from a Shariah perspective that ensures halal integrity from source to consumer. The issue highlights that MSE leaders in Malaysia’s food industry failed to optimize halal purchasing in their management practices, which undermines their ability to increase probability. The objective is to explore the strategies for optimizing halal purchasing performance of MSEs in Malaysia’s food industry, on how these businesses navigate the requirements of halal compliance in their operational practices. Through an exploratory study, 10 MSEs were examined to investigate their halal purchasing structures, involving interviews with key stakeholders such as brand owners, company directors, halal executives, and CEOs. In-depth, semi-structured interviews provided insights into company structures, challenges, and halal purchasing strategies. Thematic analysis was employed, using an inductive pattern coding approach where codes emerged organically from the data and were categorized into themes and sub-themes. Findings revealed a variety of business types, with six individually owned companies and four family-run businesses, highlighting differences in employee numbers, business longevity, and owner demographics. The study also suggests a trend of generational succession in family-owned businesses. This research demonstrates the utility of CAQDAS in managing and analyzing complex qualitative data in case study research.

Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) was developed for the purpose of creating efficient modes of qualitative data analysis (Fielding & Lee, 1998). Despite these developments, many social scientists continue to advocate manual data analysis techniques (Hammersley & Atkinson, 1995). Given the rapid development of computerized methods of data analysis amid the continued call for the use of naturalistic inquiry in sport psychology research, the aim of this research note was to compare manual and computerized data analysis techniques. Results highlight the advantages, disadvantages, and commonly held assumptions of the use of CAQDAS.

For many years, qualitative analysis has largely been undertaken using manual techniques. Since the late 1980s, dedicated software has been developed to aid qualitative analysis. The first generation of computer programs was largely designed to assist researchers in managing data by enabling the structuring of information from focus groups, field notes and interviews. One of the first computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) packages (developed by Australian academic Tom Richards) was called NUD*IST, which stands for Non-numerical Unstructured Data Indexing, Searching and Theorising. It was designed to provide a program like SPSS but as a non-Statistical Package for Social Scientists. Second generation CAQDAS packages introduced functions for coding text and manipulating, searching and reporting on the coded text. This assisted researchers in the retrieval of text from data, enabled scholars to code that data and develop a system of relating codes to each other using tree-like structures.

As professional demands in an increasingly competitive academic environment are growing, professors are often assigned to teach outside their area of expertise. This paper investigates the experience of teaching new courses that are outside a faculty member’s immediate area of expertise. Key questions concern the extent to which faculty members appreciate the opportunity to be content novices and whether they accept to appear as such in front of their students. This paper uses an online qualitative survey of 70 international faculty members from diverse academic disciplines. It also employs the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) package NVivo (Version 12) to conduct a series of qualitative analysis. Our findings suggest a fluctuation in the faculty members’ responses about the importance of mastering the subject matter and the joy of teaching as a content novice. The study finally provides practical suggestions on how to succeed in teaching outside one’s area of expertise.

This article draws on the author's experience using qualitative video and audio analysis, most notably through use of the Transana qualitative video and audio analysis software program, as an alternative method for teaching IQ administration skills to students in a graduate psychology program. Qualitative video and audio analysis may be useful for psychology programs to more effectively and efficiently train students on IQ administration. Through use of Transana, video and audio footage and corresponding verbal and nonverbal transcripts of student-conducted IQ administrations can be coded and organized and later retrieved by any combination of codes, file or clip identifiers, or collections of clips and presented as a simultaneous, running display of video, audio, and corresponding transcripts that facilitates rich analysis and feedback.

Introduction: Human beings express their emotions through different types of language. The combination of verbal and non-verbal language makes it possible to broaden the capture of the senses and deepen the understanding of a certain social phenomenon. The use of software aims to support the systematization and optimization of the combined data analysis process; Goals: To map scientific production on the use of software for combined analysis of textual and visual data in qualitative research; Methods: Scope review carried out in four international databases (Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE and Web of Science), between September 2021 and January 2022. A semi-structured instrument was developed for data collection. The data processing and analysis process was supported by the Rayyan QCR application and the webQDA qualitative analysis software; Results: The final review sample consisted of 11 studies published between 2014 and 2022, mainly in the health area. The publications involved three types of qualitative analysis software: NVivo, Atlas.ti and MaxQda. Photography was the most used source to produce visual data, while focus and discussion groups stood out to produce textual data. Thematic analysis was used in most publications and the software essentially supported the data coding step in a combined way; Conclusions: The combined analysis of textual and visual data carried out with the support of software proved to be a methodological path still on the rise, given that the review identified only 11 studies published in the last eight years.

Raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) poses distinct challenges for the parents. The responsibilities that come with securing ongoing support are often described as daunting by them. Parents need support, guidance, and access to specialists to come to terms with the first diagnosis of ASD and to safely guide their child through the developmental stages into adulthood. To investigate the experiences of parents who are raising children diagnosed with ASD in Greece. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight parents of children with ASD. Interviews were analyzed according to Braun and Clarke's thematic methodology. Qualitative analysis software program ATLAS.TI version 8 was used for data organization and analysis. Data analysis resulted in one core theme, as the participants experienced raising their child with ASD as "losing your way, being on a rollercoaster with ups and downs". The core theme comprised of five sub-themes: (a) Experiencing loneliness, isolation, and social stigma, (b) Positive development in the long run and finding solutions to problems, (c) Advocating for their child, being the link, (d) Uncertainty, stress, fear for what the future holds, and (e) Losing themselves, identity crisis. The parents grappled with feelings of loneliness, isolation, and stigma. Engaging in social interactions with friends and extended family proved particularly challenging. Additionally, they made substantial life adjustments, including changing or even stopping their careers. Nevertheless, despite their many challenges, the children progressed over time. This prompted the parents to devise solutions, be proactive and keep going, for the best interest of their child.

Clinician and Patient Perspectives on Treatment Decision-Making in Multiple Myeloma: A Qualitative Survey

The purpose of this study was to explore cancer support and financial issues related to cancer care experienced by African-American men with prostate cancer and to understand whom they relied on for resource issues during diagnosis and treatment. This is a descriptive qualitative study of 23 rural and urban 65years old and older African-American prostate cancer survivors. Five focus groups were conducted containing African-American prostate cancer survivors who were recruited from community-based centers (e.g., churches, barbershops, diners, and primary care clinics) in central Virginia and Maryland. Focus group discussions were audiotaped, transcribed, and coded. Data were organized and managed using a qualitative analysis software program. Emerging themes uncovered specific problems for older rural African-American men with cancer, and focus group data were examined for potential solutions to these problems. Two common themes emerged: (1) family and physician support are important, and (2) insurance is a necessity for appropriate health care. A difference between rural and urban African-American prostate cancer survivors emerged as well: difference in spirituality during diagnosis and treatment. Rural and urban African-American prostate cancer survivors' major support resource was their wives. Health insurance played a critical role as a support source by decreasing anxiety and financial hardships. Understanding rural and urban African-American prostate cancer survivors' support needs and challenges in relation to cancer diagnosis and treatment will allow nurses and other health-care providers to tailor cancer health plans more effectively for this population.

BackgroundThe rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has transformed how students interact with academic content. ChatGPT, as a prominent AI-based language model, has been increasingly adopted by students to support learning tasks. However, the factors influencing its academic use intention remain underexplored in Latin American contexts.ObjectiveThis study aims to identify the sociodemographic and perceptual predictors that explain the academic use intention of ChatGPT among university students in Ecuador.MethodsA cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted with 210 students from seven Ecuadorian universities. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire encompassing six constructs: compatibility with students’ learning styles, efficiency, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, and intention of continued use. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, binary logistic regression, and k-means clustering were performed using Python in Google Colab.ResultsThe logistic regression model revealed that perceived usefulness (OR = 2.37) and compatibility with learning style (OR = 1.87) were the most significant predictors of high academic use intention. Cluster analysis identified three user profiles: enthusiastic adopters, neutral users, and reluctant adopters. Sociodemographic factors showed limited predictive power.ConclusionStudents’ perceptions of the academic value and alignment of ChatGPT with their learning preferences are stronger predictors of usage intention than sociodemographic characteristics. These findings highlight the need for pedagogically aligned and inclusive AI integration strategies in higher education.

The enema has evolved through trial and error, not scientific investigation. Because little scientific base exists, the authors began their study of enemas by examining current nursing practice. They asked 24 experienced registered nurses to describe how they give enemas, and if they had seen any complications. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative analysis software. The authors found that the nurses emphasized patient cooperation, preparation, and comfort; had observed few complications, and had difficulty describing quantitative aspects of enemas (e.g., amount of solution given, speed of administration).

Purpose Recent years saw a paradigm shift from ex post (reactive) to ex ante (proactive) approaches (e.g. insurance) to disaster risk financing for building resilience of communities in developing countries. To facilitate adoption, the approaches should be adapted so that they can be technically feasible and culturally desirable to the local context. This paper aims to report an exploratory study to elaborate the existing arrangements to deal with the impacts of disaster and the potential to shift to a more proactive disaster risk financing in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach A series of stakeholder engagement activities in Semarang and Solo, Indonesia was conducted to ascertain the existing arrangements for disaster risk financing at local government level, the challenges/barriers to the adoption of insurance, education and policies to facilitate the transformation from reactive to proactive process. Thematic analysis was applied to transcribed conversations during interviews, focus groups and workshops. Identification of emerging issues/themes was also guided by the researchers’ notes during the events, and facilitated by qualitative analysis software, Atlas Ti®. This was complemented by an analysis of regulations and documents provided by the local stakeholders. Findings The local governments heavily rely on contingency fund, which is not enough and often significantly delayed to fund recovery and reconstruction of public infrastructure. The use of insurance is limited in both public and private sectors, particularly in the majority of low-income communities. Various barriers and challenges were identified under several categories, namely, institutional, cultural, affordability, lack of awareness and knowledge, insurance arrangement process and lack of trust. The findings also suggest that improving insurance education should involve multiple stakeholders, and both formal and informal routes should be pursued. Originality/value The research fills the gap of knowledge in disaster risk financing in the context of developing countries, specifically in local governments and communities in Indonesia. The findings may be replicable for other developing countries with low adoption of ex ante financial instruments for dealing with the impacts of disaster.

Objectives:The aim of this study is to present an explanatory model of hearing loss in the Bering Strait region of Alaska in order to contextualize the results of a cluster randomized trial and propose implications for regional hearing-related health care.Design:To promote ecological validity, or the generalizability of trial findings to real world experiences, qualitative methods (focus groups and interviews) were used within a mixed methods cluster randomized trial evaluating school hearing screening and follow-up processes in 15 communities in the Bering Strait region of Alaska. Focus groups were held between April and August 2017, and semistructured interviews were conducted between December 2018 and August 2019. Convenience sampling was used for six of the 11 focus groups to capture broad community feedback. Purposive sampling was used for the remaining five focus groups and for all interviews to capture a variety of experiences with hearing loss. Audio recordings of focus groups and interviews were transcribed, and both notes and transcripts were deidentified. All notes and transcripts were included in the analysis. The constant comparative method was used to develop a codebook by iteratively moving between transcripts and preliminary themes. Researchers then used this codebook to code data from all focus groups and interviews using qualitative analysis software (NVIVO 12, QSR International) and conducted thematic analyses to distill the findings presented in this article.Results:Participants in focus groups (n = 116) and interviews (n = 101) shared perspectives in three domains: etiology, impact, and treatment of hearing loss. Regarding etiology, participants emphasized noise-induced hearing loss but also discussed infection-related hearing loss and various causes of ear infections. Participants described the impact of hearing loss on subsistence activities, while also detailing social, academic, and economic consequences. Participants described burdensome treatment pathways that are repetitive and often travel and time intensive. Communication breakdowns within these pathways were also described. Some participants spoke positively of increased access via onsite hearing health care services in “field clinics” as well as via telemedicine services. Others described weaknesses in these processes (infrequent field clinics and communication delays in telemedicine care pathways). Participants also described home remedies and stigma surrounding the treatment for hearing loss.Conclusions:Patient-centered health care requires an understanding of context. Explanatory models of illness are context-specific ways in which patients and their networks perceive and describe the experience of an illness or disability. In this study, we documented explanatory models of hearing loss to foster ecological validity and better understand the relevance of research findings to real-life hearing-related experiences. These findings suggest several areas that should be addressed in future implementation of hearing health care interventions elsewhere in rural Alaska, including management of repetitious treatments, awareness of infection-mediated hearing loss, mistrust, and communication breakdowns. For hearing-related health care in this region, these findings suggest localized recommendations for approaches for prevention and treatment. For community-based hearing research, this study offers an example of how qualitative methods can be used to generate ecologically valid (i.e., contextually grounded) findings.
