Sparse matrix decompositions and graph characterizations
The measure of sphericity for positive semi-definite matrices plays a crucial role in understanding their geometric properties, especially in high-dimensional settings. This paper introduces a robust measure of sphericity, which remains invariant under orthogonal transformations and scaling. We explore its behavior in finite-dimensional cases. Additionally, we investigate the stochastic case by considering a normal distribution, analyzing the asymptotic normality of random matrices and its implications on the convergence properties of the proposed measure.

New hardness results for the permanent using linear optics
In 2011, Aaronson gave a striking proof, based on quantum linear optics, that the problem of computing the permanent of a matrix is #P-hard. Aaronson's proof led naturally to hardness of approximation results for the permanent, and it was arguably simpler than Valiant's seminal proof of the same fact in 1979. Nevertheless, it did not show #P-hardness of the permanent for any class of matrices which was not previously known. In this paper, we present a collection of new results about matrix permanents that are derived primarily via these linear optical techniques.First, we show that the problem of computing the permanent of a real orthogonal matrix is #P-hard. Much like Aaronson's original proof, this implies that even a multiplicative approximation remains #P-hard to compute. The hardness result even translates to permanents of orthogonal matrices over the finite field Fp4 for p ≠ 2, 3. Interestingly, this characterization is tight: in fields of characteristic 2, the permanent coincides with the determinant; in fields of characteristic 3, one can efficiently compute the permanent of an orthogonal matrix by a nontrivial result of Kogan. Finally, we use more elementary arguments to prove #P-hardness for the permanent of a positive semidefinite matrix. This result shows that certain probabilities of boson sampling experiments with thermal states are hard to compute exactly, despite the fact that they can be efficiently sampled by a classical computer.

Birkhoff-James orthogonality in the trace norm, with applications to quantum resource theories
Numerous results are presented that characterize when a complex Hermitian matrix is Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to a (Hermitian) positive semidefinite matrix or set of positive semidefinite matrices. For example, a simple-to-test criterion that determines which Hermitian matrices are Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to the set of all positive semidefinite diagonal matrices is developed. Applications in the theory of quantum resources are explored. For example, the quantum states that have modified trace distance of coherence equal to $1$ (the maximal possible value) are characterized, and a connection between the modified trace distance of $2$-entanglement and the NPPT bound entanglement problem is established.

Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with node set V=[1,n], a subset $S\subseteq V$, and a rational vector $a\in {\rm\bf Q}^{S\cup E}$, the positive semidefinite matrix completion problem consists of determining whether there exists a real symmetric n × n positive semidefinite matrix X=(xij) satisfying xii=ai ($i\in S$) and xij=aij ($ij\in E$). Similarly, the Euclidean distance matrix completion problem asks for the existence of a Euclidean distance matrix completing a partially defined given matrix. It is not known whether these problems belong to NP. We show here that they can be solved in polynomial time when restricted to the graphs having a fixed minimum fill-in, the minimum fill-in of graph G being the minimum number of edges needed to be added to G in order to obtain a chordal graph. A simple combinatorial algorithm permits us to construct a completion in polynomial time in the chordal case. We also show that the completion problem is polynomially solvable for a class of graphs including wheels of fixed length (assuming all diagonal entries are specified). The running time of our algorithms is polynomially bounded in terms of n and the bitlength of the input a. We also observe that the matrix completion problem can be solved in polynomial time in the real number model for the class of graphs containing no homeomorph K4.

In this paper the concept of positive definite bilinear matrix moment functional, acting on the space of all the matrix valued continuous functions defined on a bounded interval [a,b] is introduced. The best approximation matrix problem with respect to such a functional is solved in terms of matrix Fourier series. Basic properties of matrix Fourier series such as the Riemann—Lebesgue, matrix property and the bessel—parseval matrix inequality are proved. The concept of total set with respect to a positive definite matrix functional is introduced, and the totallity of an orthonormal sequence of matrix polynomials with respect to the functional is established.

Conservative perturbations of positive definite Hamiltonian matrices
We consider Hamiltonian matrices obtained by means of symmetric and positive definite matrices and analyse some perturbations that maintain the eigenvalues on the imaginary axis of the complex plane. To obtain this result we prove for such matrices the existence of a diagonal form or, alternatively by means of symplectic transformations, the existence of thesimplestcanonical form. Applications related to a pair of problems in the context of linear algebra and differential equations are also reported. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Read moreThe -positive semidefinite matrices A such that are nonsingular
This work focuses on the class of L -positive semidefinite matrices A such that A A ( L ) ( † ) − A ( L ) ( † ) A is nonsingular, where A ( L ) ( † ) is the generalized Bott-Duffin inverse of A with respect to a subspace L . We give some equivalent characterizations for the nonsingularity of A A ( L ) ( † ) − A ( L ) ( † ) A , A A ( L ) ( † ) + A ( L ) ( † ) A and I n − A ( A ( L ) ( † ) ) 2 A mainly by rank equalities and subspace operations, among which relations are pointed out. Meanwhile we show the inverses of their general versions in a decomposition form. In addition, the continuity of this class of matrices is discussed based on the continuity of the generalized Bott–Duffin inverse.

We show the existence of a broad class of affine Markov processes on the cone of positive self-adjoint Hilbert–Schmidt operators. Such processes are well-suited as infinite-dimensional stochastic covariance models. The class of processes we consider is an infinite-dimensional analogue of the affine processes on the cone of positive semi-definite and symmetric matrices studied in Cuchiero et al. (2011).As in the finite-dimensional case, the processes we construct allow for a drift depending affine linearly on the state, as well as jumps governed by a jump measure that depends affine linearly on the state. The fact that the cone of positive self-adjoint Hilbert–Schmidt operators has empty interior calls for a new approach to proving existence: instead of using standard localization techniques, we employ the theory on generalized Feller semigroups introduced in Dörsek and Teichmann (2010) and further developed in Cuchiero and Teichmann (2020). Our approach requires a second moment condition on the jump measures involved, consequently, we obtain explicit formulas for the first and second moments of the affine process.

A New Algorithm for Positive Semidefinite Matrix Completion
Positive semidefinite matrix completion (PSDMC) aims to recover positive semidefinite and low-rank matrices from a subset of entries of a matrix. It is widely applicable in many fields, such as statistic analysis and system control. This task can be conducted by solving the nuclear norm regularized linear least squares model with positive semidefinite constraints. We apply the widely used alternating direction method of multipliers to solve the model and get a novel algorithm. The applicability and efficiency of the new algorithm are demonstrated in numerical experiments. Recovery results show that our algorithm is helpful.

Low-Rank Covariance Matrix Recovery From Rank-One Measurements: An Analytical Solution
In this paper, we propose an analytical solution for recovering a low-rank positive semi-definite (PSD) matrix from its rank-one measurements. We show that by utilizing a set of structured measurement vectors, we can analytically determine the null space of this low-rank PSD matrix. Based on the result, the PSD matrix can be efficiently recovered. Our analysis shows that the proposed method only requires <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$(N-K)(2K+1) + K^{2}$</tex-math></inline-formula> measurements to guarantee exact recovery of the PSD matrix, where <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$N$</tex-math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$K$</tex-math></inline-formula> respectively denote the dimension and the rank of the PSD matrix. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves a considerable improvement over existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of both sample complexity and computational efficiency. Specifically, the proposed method helps improve the computational efficiency by an order of magnitude as compared with existing methods.
