Mobile Accessibility Guidelines Adoption under the Perspective of Developers and Designers

Social Media platforms are increasing user engagements with their attractive User Interfaces (UI) design playing a crucial role in maintaining user involvement. Use of Emotional Intelligence (EI) into the UI transforming user interaction and engagement pattern significantly. With an emphasis on how design decisions affect user behaviour, this study explores the nuanced function of EIUIs (Emotionally Inteligence User Interfaces) in the context of social media. It specifically draws attention to the dangers of manipulative techniques like "dark patterns"-purposeful interface strategies intended to influence users to take actions they might not have otherwise taken-as well as the possibility of constructive involvement. By investigating these practices, the paper hopes to clarify the wider ethical consequences of interface design as well as the duty of platforms and designers to promote transparency, autonomy, and confidence in digital interactions. This paper aims to contribute to the discourse on user interface design by providing a comprehensive understanding of EIUIs' potential and pitfalls in the context of social media interactions. Additionally, this study focusses on finding information of the pattern of Emotionally Intelligent User Interfaces (EIUI) design to enhance user engagements emotionally and tend to take decisions and the impact of the design pattern in user experience.

An optical brain-machine interface (O-BMI) system using calcium imaging has various advantages such as high resolution, a comprehensive view of large neural populations, abilities such as long-term stable recording, and applicability to freely behaving animals in neuroscience research. The present study developed an ergonomic user interface (UI) design, based on a use scenario for an O-BMI system that can be used for the acquisition and processing of calcium imaging in freely behaving rodents. The UI design was developed in three steps: (1) identification of design and function requirements of users, (2) establishment of a use scenario, and (3) development of a UI prototype. The UI design requirements were identified by a literature review, a benchmark of existing systems, and a focus group interview with five neuroscience researchers. Then, the use scenario was developed for tasks of data acquisition, feature extraction, and neural decoding for offline and online processing by considering the sequences of operations and needs of users. Lastly, a digital prototype incorporating an information architecture, graphic user interfaces, and simulated functions was fabricated. A usability test was conducted with five neuroscientists (work experience = 3.4 ± 1.1 years) and five ergonomic experts (work experience = 3.6 ± 2.7 years) to compare the digital prototypes with four existing systems (Miniscope, nVista, Mosaic, and Suite2p). The usability testing results showed that the ergonomic UI design was significantly preferred to the UI designs of the existing systems by reducing the task completion time by 10.1% to 70.2% on average, the scan path length by 14.4% to 88.7%, and perceived workload by 12.2% to 37.9%, increasing satisfaction by 11.3% to 74.3% in data acquisition and signal-extraction tasks. The present study demonstrates the significance of the user-centered design approach in the development of a system for neuroscience research. Further research is needed to validate the usability test results of the UI prototype as a corresponding real system is implemented.

An alternative solution for Indosport, considering the increasingly advanced smartphone development and also followed by the rapid growth of its users in Indonesia. The purpose of this study project is to produce a product in the form of a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design in helping to realize targeted mobile applications and not forgetting to apply the principles of visual communication design namely unity and variety, hierarchy, contrast, proportion and balance. The UI and UX design methods go through several stages of work in sequence: pre-production process, production process, and post-production. This design results in UI and UX designs that are equipped with user flow, interface designs, illustrations and prototypes. The main page of the Indosport mobile application is News, Activity, Calendar, and Profile which later on these pages there are several features that are different from the previous page. The making of this UI uses several visual languages such as medium close up, full shot, long shot, close up and medium long shot in the image section contained in the article as well as the depiction of field styles used to almost all visual UI elements. Using several principles in design, namely time to learn, speed of performance, rate of errors by users, retention over time, and subjective satisfaction. The resulting design forms will be distributed directly to the Research and Development division and the IT division from Indosport to be made a native.

In today's fast-paced society, when learning can take place anytime and anywhere, mobile learning is extremely relevant. Nonetheless, despite these significant benefits, there are numerous problems that could slow down the learning process. Due to the small screen size and user interface that are inappropriately designed for mobile devices, learners are experiencing an increase in their cognitive load. This study examines the relationships between mobile learning user interface design and their effects on learners' cognitive load, specifically the extraneous load. First, the mobile learning user interface design criteria that affect the learner's cognitive load are identified. Next, a study on cognitive load measurement is implemented to further understand the type, method and criteria of cognitive load. Both of these findings are important in understanding the relationship between the mobile learning user interface design and learner's cognitive load. This study presented a conceptual framework for the effects of user interface design for mobile learning application on learner's extraneous cognitive load. This conceptual framework will be the foundation of a user interface design framework that aims at improving learner's cognitive load when implementing mobile learning apps. This framework will offer guidance for those interested in designing mobile learning applications, that give learners an effective knowledge and mobile learning experience, hence improving the success of the mobile learning process.

Design Patterns (DPs) are acknowledged as powerful conceptual tools to improve design quality and to reduce time and cost of the development process by effect of the reuse of "good" design solutions. In many fields (e.g., software engineering, web engineering, interface design) patterns are widely used by practitioners and are also investigated from a research perspective. Still, they have been seldom explored in the arena of Recommender Systems (RSs). RSs provide suggestions ("recommendations") for items that are likely to be appropriate for the user profile, and are increasingly adopted in content-intensive multimedia applications to complement traditional forms of search in large information spaces. This paper explores RSs through the lens of User Interface (UI) Design Patterns. We have performed a systematic analysis of 54 recommendation-empowered content-intensive multimedia applications, in order to: (i) discover the occurrences of existing domain independent UI patterns; (ii) identify frequently adopted UI solutions that are not modelled by existing patterns, and define a set of new UI patterns, some of which are specific of the interfaces for recommendation features while others can be useful also in a broader context. The results of our inspection have been discussed with and evaluated by a team of experts, leading to a consolidated set of 14 new patterns that are reported in the paper. Reusing pattern-based design solutions instead of building new solutions from scratch enables novice and expert designers to build good UIs for Recommendation-empowered content intensive multimedia applications more effectively, and ultimately can improve the UX experience in this class of systems. From a broader perspective, our work can stimulate future research bridging Recommender Systems, Web Engineering and Interface Design by means of Design Patterns, and highlights new research directions also discussed in the paper.

Mobile user interface (UI) design plays a very important role in determining an application that can be adopted by all types of users, especially those residing in rural areas. This review aims to provide a mapping of previously published studies on mobile UI design application for smallholder agriculture to be a smart farmer. The focus of this scoping review is on the design elements of the proposed UI, strategies of inquiry used and to find out if there is a UI design that involves geospatial context by published articles. The results show that interview and observation are the most common field study methods used to obtain information in designing mobile UI, and the most widely applied UI elements are audio and Interactive Voice Response (IVR). There are many user interface elements that can be used by farmers who have different skills level in dealing with mobile technology. Icon interface is an important element in designing mobile UI for rural farmers based on previous results. Other than that, the use of location function in mobile UI design shows an upward trend where three recent articles used location function to report crop pest and disease and determine the nearest market location. In addition, there is a need to design geospatial elements such as map for mobile UI that match the skills of rural farmers to support the fourth Industrial Revolution in agriculture to be a smart farmer.

Sundanese culture possesses a wealth of traditional values and symbols that can be visualized through various digital media, one of which is mobile application icons. This study aims to design angklung-themed application icons as an effort to visualize Sundanese culture in the context of user interface (UI) design. Using a qualitative approach, the design process was carried out through three main stages: collecting visual references, creating manual sketches, and digitizing the designs. The main visual elements of the angklung, such as vertical and horizontal bamboo tubes, were creatively adapted into common application icons including Home, Contact, Message, Settings, Files, Browser, Music, Camera, Phone, and Clock. The results indicate that these icon designs not only fulfill aesthetic and functional aspects of modern UI but also successfully represent local cultural values visually. These findings reinforce the idea that digital interfaces can serve as effective and adaptive media for cultural representation in the technological era. UI design based on local culture such as this is expected to strengthen Indonesia's visual identity within the digital ecosystem.

In 2023, digital literacy has increased to be discussed which navigates human interaction with the current digital environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between digital literacy and user interface (UI) design quality using a usability testing approach. The study involved collecting data through a series of trials with participants representing different levels of digital literacy. The parameters evaluated involved aspects of digital literacy, such as the ability to understand and evaluate digital information, as well as usability elements such as interface clarity, navigation efficiency, and user engagement level. The approach used is the design thinking method which focuses on the end result only. Usability testing is an important evaluation method in measuring the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of a user interface (UI). This research focuses on the use of usability testing to assess the quality of UI design in the context of understanding digital literacy. The results of this study can provide insight into how the level of digital literacy can affect the user experience in using digital applications and contribute to the development of UIs that are more user-friendly and accessible to various levels of society.

User interfaces are important for streamlining the interactions between humans and computers. However, there are few effective approaches for collecting users’ preferences implicitly and objectively for the purpose of user interface (UI) design optimization. This paper presents an effective approach to interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) optimization-based UI design via eye tracking, including eye-movement data based users’ preference inferring, gene coding for real UI components and design features, and the visualization and interaction mechanisms. Then we design and build a prototype system that applies IGA to generate and optimize music player UI solutions automatically. An evaluation of our prototype system suggests that it can generate and identify personalized UI designs reliably with minimal user intervention and high efficiency and user satisfaction.

Strategic management of cognitive load enhances user interface (UI) design in a two-fold manner, particularly in information services that require frequent use of sophisticated data. This paper addresses cognitive overload and elevated user experience by decomposing UI elements and information flow. The primary concern is having users cope with vital information within a reasonable timeframe, which is critical to productivity and overall satisfaction. We explore cognitive load theory, specifically its application in UI design regarding intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. Through case studies and usability testing, we focus on visual hierarchies, navigation, and overall design consistency that advance feedback and content chunking to show the extreme reduction in mental effort. Also, cognitive load solutions that alter content and interaction based on user activity are advanced as novel adaptive interfaces. The paper frames real-world scenarios to illustrate assessing cognitive load in information service systems to aid UI decision-makers and developers. Emphasis on enabling real-time interface navigation supports optimal information retention and swift decision making. A systems approach focused on users' cognitive capabilities enables a UI design which ultimately makes information services more effective, efficient, and user-friendly.

In today’s automotive industry there is an increasing demand for VR technology, because it provides the possibility to switch from cost and time intensiv physical mock up’s (PMU) to digital mock up’s (DMU). Furthermore the visualization and examination of simulation results is a very important aspect during the whole development cycle. Therefore tools are needed, which enable the users to work with DMU’s, as well as simulation data sets in an efficient and intuitive way. In this paper we present the design of a VR user interface for evaluating simulation data sets. The design of the user interface is based on the basic interaction tasks (BIT’s), introduced by Foley et. al.. Knowledge-based support for user adapted interaction design

The widespread use of mobile applications (apps) offers a new platform for sustaining traditional culture, yet insufficient focus on interface design has hindered user experience. This paper focuses on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) apps, examining user preferences for interface design elements and their combinations across four dimensions: visual effects, functional attributes, layout, and interaction modes. Utilizing Conjoint Analysis Method (CAM), this study quantitatively explores user preferences for the combination schemes of 18 orthogonal designs. The study collected 464 users’ data through questionnaires and processed the data using CAM and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The findings indicate that users have a high demand for theme colors (35.09%), text styles (27.32%), and icon styles (14.78%) in medical consultation apps. For health education apps, users exhibit preferences for text styles (24.95%), theme colors (24.58%), and functional architecture (16.30%). In professional learning apps, the preferred elements are theme colors (24.07%), text styles (18.54%), and icon styles (18.03%). Based on these results, the paper proposes corresponding design strategies for each type of TCM app. This study reveals the characteristics of user preferences for different categories of TCM apps, enriching the theories and methods of interaction design for similar mobile applications. Ultimately, this facilitates the integration of traditional Chinese medicine culture with modern digital technology, promoting the digital and sustainable transmission of traditional culture.
