Modeling the impact of information technology governance effectiveness using partial least square

Purpose This paper aims to reveal the potential challenges and opportunities for information technology (IT) governance in higher education institutions (HEIs). Furthermore, the authors extend what the identified determinants mean for Saudi universities. Design/methodology/approach This study pursued a systematic literature review applying the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses strategy protocol. Findings IT governance is both beneficial and challenging to integrate into the higher education setting. This is because most IT Governance frameworks are created and implemented in a traditional organizational setting, which differs from the overall culture of HEIs. As for the context of Saudi Arabia, findings depict a hopeful picture for the future of IT Governance, as HEI stakeholders are primarily aware of IT Governance policies, but Saudi HEIs are yet to work toward this goal systematically. Research limitations/implications Apart from extending the current literature on IT governance, this paper adds the educational perspective and the Saudi context, which is found to be limited in the existing literature. The findings could be used to benchmark the IT Governance scenario in other countries, wherein this study could support the roadmap of effective IT governance adoption in HEIs in various nations. Originality/value This study could support improving the institutional operational performance of HEIs in Saudi Arabia, particularly in terms of electronic monitoring systems, effective monitoring of processing systems, prevention of fraud and reducing the manipulation and wasting of funds. The insights from this study could be beneficial to government policymakers, higher education managers, researchers and academics.

In response to the international trend, in recent years companieshave officially adopted the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) and need to perform upgrade or adjustment to their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systemsfor the IFRS conversion. Information technology (IT) governance in an ERP system environment will become akey that cannot be ignored by the management. To investigate the impact of implementing IT governance in an ERP environment on the effectiveness of ERP implementation and IFRS conversion The findings are as follows: Effective IT governance in a company can improve the project performance of ERP implementation; The improvement of the information quality and system qualityofan ERP system candemonstrate the effectiveness of the IFRS conversion through the ERP system; The project performance of ERP implementation can improve the information quality and system quality of the ERP system as well as the effectiveness of the IFRS implementation.

Governance in the domain of Information Technology (IT) has gradually progressed into a strategic asset that empowers universities to synchronize and realign their technological aspirations with their institutional goals. In doing this, universities seek to maintain accountability in their decision-making processes. Within the Namibian higher education sector, the task of developing a functional IT governance framework entails more than merely applying technical tools. This is because it also requires strong leadership capabilities to ensure the relevance of such a framework. This research explored and examined how institutional leaderships facilitate IT governance within three prominent universities in Namibia. Using the mixed-methods approach, with data collected from the directors and professionals within IT departments of the universities and an amalgam of the Upper Echelon and Network Governance theories, the study explains how leadership traits, strategic institutional visions, and relational skills influence governance of IT in the universities. The findings of the study revealed that elements such as the dedicated leadership, digital proficiency, and collaboration of efforts and activities are crucial in developing an effective IT governance framework within the universities. The key conclusion of the study is that institutional leadership facilitates effective IT governance through elements such as shared vision, staff empowerment, and coordination of activities that synch structures of governance with the goals of universities. Based on this conclusion, the study recommends for upskilling of the institutional leaders, making IT governance a mandatory aspect within institutional structures, and installation of collaborative, yet, dynamic governance systems that promote accountability and innovation across institutional departments.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the importance of Information Technology (IT) Governance models for public organizations and presenting an IT Governance model that can be adopted by both practitioners and researchers. A review of the literature in IT Governance has been initiated to shape the intended theoretical background of this study. The systematic literature review formalizes a richer context for the IT Governance concept. An empirical survey, using a questionnaire based on COBIT 4.1 maturity model used to investigate IT Governance practice in multiple case studies from Kingdom of Bahrain. This method enabled the researcher to gain insights to evaluate IT Governance practices. The results of this research will enable public sector organizations to adopt an IT Governance model in a simple and dynamic manner. The model provides a basic structure of a concept; for instance, this allows organizations to gain a better perspective on IT Governance processes and provides a clear focus for decision-making attention. IT Governance model also forms as a basis for further research in IT Governance adoption models and bridges the gap between conceptual frameworks, real life and functioning governance.

IT governance enables companies to plan and manage their IT investments in order to achieve their strategic objectives. Overall goal of this paper is to discuss about an approach to increase the success of the software projects through Artificial Intelligence. Standard governance standards are analyzed to understand the impact on software project success rates. Enterprise governance is a subset of IT governance that aids in the management of information technology resources. COBIT is a widely used methodology for developing effective enterprise IT governance. ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) stated implementation solution currently uses a sequentially ordered approach, which has raised issues. Several challenges have arisen as a result of top management's lack of commitment and misplaced solutions. Limitation on this investigation is the customized and confidential governance pattern used across various organization, hence there are very limited real time data for end-to-end analysis. Nonetheless, in combination with the agile project management paradigm, new project life-cycle solutions have evolved. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an important element to address the increasing demand for machine learning systems. Artificial neural network (ANN) method is highly useful to arrive at best possible solution to improve the project success. This study found that ANN with Balance Score Card was exceptionally effective in providing the optimal solution to increase the project success rates.

The study seeks to examine the impact of Information technology (IT) governance structure, process and relational mechanisms on firm performance. Using an event study, we collected a sample of 70 announcements of IT governance adoption investments. We found that most firms adopt all three types of IT governance mechanisms. IT governance structural mechanisms have a positive impact on firm’s profitability. In contrast, IT governance process and relational mechanisms have a negative association with firm performance. More interestingly, the findings provide insight for organizations that they should realize the potentially negative impact of the controls requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley Act Section 404 and IT leadership on firm performance.

Organisations continue to make significant investments in Information Technology (IT) to enable business. To ensure a return on investment in IT, there is a need for a wider accountability focus on strategic technology initiatives alongside a structured and evaluative approach to the effective governance of IT. Throughout the last decade, systems, processes, standards and best practice frameworks have been developed to facilitate effective IT governance. However, IT deployment initiatives seem to continue to fail to deliver outcomes. This paper examines the impact of ineffective IT governance (ITG) on IT deployment failure in a set of failed IT projects. First, a literature review establishes the influencers (and indicators) of effective ITG. Next, a multiple case study analysis of failed IT deployment initiatives identifies key contributors to deployment failure. Finally, the outcome of the case study analysis is mapped back to the indicators of effective ITG derived from the literature review to determine a possible connection between failed IT deployment and ineffective IT governance. The outcome of the analysis demonstrates a connection between project failures and lack of effective ITG.

Previous research has proposed different types for and contingency factors affecting information technology governance. Yet, in spite of this valuable work, it is still unclear through what mechanisms IT governance affects organizational performance. We make a detailed argument for the mediation of strategic alignment in this process. Strategic alignment remains a top priority for business and IT executives, but theory-based empirical research on the relative importance of the factors affecting strategic alignment is still lagging. By consolidating strategic alignment and IT governance models, this research proposes a nomological model showing how organizational value is created through IT governance mechanisms. Our research model draws upon the resource-based view of the firm and provides guidance on how strategic alignment can mediate the effectiveness of IT governance on organizational performance. As such, it contributes to the knowledge bases of both alignment and IT governance literatures. Using dyadic data collected from 131 Taiwanese companies (cross-validated with archival data from 72 firms), we uncover a positive, significant, and impactful linkage between IT governance mechanisms and strategic alignment and, further, between strategic alignment and organizational performance. We also show that the effect of IT governance mechanisms on organizational performance is fully mediated by strategic alignment. Besides making contributions to construct and measure items in this domain, this research contributes to the theory base by integrating and extending the literature on IT governance and strategic alignment, both of which have long been recognized as critical for achieving organizational goals.

Past research in information technology (IT) governance has shown that strong IT governance results in improved business performance. Despite widespread acceptance that IT governance is important, there are limited studies focusing on IT practitioners in IT governance initiatives. This study aims to examine the extent of commitment, awareness, perceived importance and competency in influencing IT practitioners’ participation in IT governance initiatives. Data analysis using Partial Least Squares reveals that awareness, perceived importance and competency have positive influence on participation in IT governance. However, commitment is not a significant predictor of participation in IT governance. The practitioner-centric approach taken by this study adds knowledge to the existing IT governance literature from organisational perspective. The findings from this study help IT management identify focus areas in increasing to maximise participation of IT practitioners in IT governance initiatives.

The issues, opportunities and challenges of effectively managing and governing an organization’s Information Technology (IT) demands, investments and resources has become a major concern of the Board and executive management in enterprises on a global basis. A rapidly growing number of organizations have become increasingly dependent on a broad array of technologies to manage and grow their businesses. IT is an integral part of most organizations today and will certainly become more critical in the future. This paper proposes a comprehensive and integrated IT governance framework and roadmap which identifies the appropriate current and emerging best practices methodologies for each of the major IT Governance components that must be addressed in any approach and is critical for companies to achieve more effective alignment and management of IT. The framework can serve as a guideline for any organization to select and customize the appropriate approach applicable to its environment, plans, priorities, capabilities and available resources. The findings and implications are based on extensive primary and secondary research and are grounded in a review of current and emerging industry and government best practices and select case studies of leading global and regional organizations based on the recently published book by the author entitled, “Implementing Effective IT Governance and IT Management,” published by Van Haren Publishers, 2015.

This study provides additional evidence on information technology (IT) governance and its relationship to firm performance in emerging markets. It aims primarily to determine the level of IT governance in Saudi Arabian companies; it also aims at examining the impact of IT governance on the firm performance. The study target sample is 131 companies taken from 20 sectors of the Saudi financial market; during the year 2017. The researchers have used the IT-related backgrounds of the members of the board of directors as an indicator of IT governance. The researchers have also used another group of corporate governance indicators in addition to a set of control variables. The performance of the companies has been referred to as the operational performance which is represented as Return on Assets (ROA) and the financial performance as the Return on Equity (ROE). The descriptive results have been shocking. The study has shown a sharp decline in IT governance in Saudi companies; only 15% of companies have members of the board of directors with IT-related backgrounds, and the IT governance is not adopted or used in many important sectors. However, the regression analysis shows that there is a positive impact on IT governance only on the operational performance of Saudi companies. The results of this study provide a significant indicator of IT governance in Saudi companies. These results can be also used to develop the corporate governance code to focus more on IT governance.

Recently, information technology governance has become a critical issue for many companies in various industries; this is even more important for enterprises due to the more complex business processes, more specified tasks and departments. Many companies suffer from extra costs of IT and other processes due to failure inefficient alignment between IT and business strategies which in turn, leads to low performance of the company. To overcome this problem, organizations need to have an effective ITG to make IT resources management more valuable, less substitute, rarer, and less imitable. To do so, firms need to use IT governance initiatives factors (Involvement of Senior Management in IT and Corporate Communication Systems) to increase their effectiveness and organizational performance. Thus, this paper is aimed to establish a framework, testing the role of Involvement of Senior Management in IT and Corporate Communication Systems on effective information technology governance (ITG) and organizational performance in the manufacturing companies; which should help managers to better understand how Involvement of Senior Management in IT and Corporate Communication Systems and effective ITG, impacts on organizational performance. 357 data were obtained from managers in the Malaysian manufacturing industry. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used in this study to analyze the measurement and structural models simultaneously to test the role effect of ITG between information technology governance initiative factors (Involvement of Senior Management in IT and Corporate Communication Systems) and organizational performance. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for future studies were discussed.

This paper aims to examine the impact of both information technology governance (ITG) and data governance on information technology (IT) performance in the telecommunication industry. A questionnaire of 308 managers was collected from all telecommunication companies that are working in Egypt. Data were analyzed using smart partial least squares (PLS). The results showed that all the hypotheses of the study had been accepted. IT and data governance have a significant impact on both financial and non-financial performance. However, each of them has a different effect on the IT performance dimensions. The financial performance of IT department had been affected by IT governance more than data governance. Also, innovation and flexibility were the most affected by IT governance. On the other hand, data governance affected business processes and ethical compliance more than IT governance. The current study filled the gap on the literature in two ways. First, studying both IT governance and data governance as a critical factors affects financial and non-financial performance. Second, studying IT governance and data governance has become more important, especially in the telecommunication industry as it is a big challenge now to secure the data of the companies.

This research examines the effect of Information Technology (IT) governance through audit clients on external auditing efficiency. To analyze the auditing efficiency of these contracts and to test the hypotheses that the Authors have set for this study, The study seeks to cover the research gap that the current literature has not adequately addressed regarding the impact of IT governance on the efficiency of external audits, concerning audit clients and giving priority to companies that can conduct audits quickly and cost-effectively, the Authors conducted a study of 30 audit contracts that were carried out by two auditing firms operating in Syria as an experiment and considered Syria adopts the IT governance framework in the Mediterranean basin and used data envelopment analysis to measure the auditing efficiency of these contracts. Furthermore, survey questionnaires were given to the audited companies to determine the extent of their compliance with IT governance, based on some of the principles of the Qubit 5 model. The data was analyzed, and the hypotheses were tested using regression analysis by employing SPSS software. The study establishes a positive correlation between the use of IT governance by audit clients and external audit efficiency based on two efficiency measures, CRS and VRS.

It is widely acknowledged that Information Technology (IT) Governance is extremely complex and at the same time equally critical when organisations endeavour to maximize their IT investments. IT Governance provides the means for decision making required to ensure that IT enables the organization to excel in its mission. IT systems are often viewed as monetary drains rather than seen as fundamental bases underpinning the strategic direction of organizations. IT implementations often do not meet requirements, fail, are over budget and the media is littered with headlines that corroborate these perceptions. IT projects are now so big, and they touch so many aspects of an organization, that they pose a singular new risk as according to Harvard Business Review Magazine that a $5 million project leads to an almost $200 million loss (Flyvbjerg and Budzier, 2011). Every organisation will have experienced complications of an IT implementation and this is why IT Governance is becoming a crucial factor to business survival no matter how large or small an organisation is. This interpretive study of IT Governance provides an opportunity to from both theoretical and practice-based perspectives using multiple case studies from public sector organisations based in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
