Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long-established condition of unknown aetiology, with the elusive holy grail of cause and cure still not on the immediate horizon. It is a condition of younger people, often diagnosed at the cusp of their professional and personal lives, bringing uncertain prognosis, potential lifetime disability and limited treatment options. MS specialist nurses are unique in their work across the wellness–illness continuum. People with MS (PwMS) may have periods of being well, and then experience sudden and extremely disabling attacks. Or they may not, experiencing relatively mild episodes at long intervals. Some will become very disabled very quickly, with no remission in the relentless progression of disability, some will have a long period of instability followed by a plateau of disability. Many will have consequences that are difficult to define in medical terminology, but are debilitating, disabling and socially isolating.
