Abstract

The increasing number of asylum seekers arriving at the end of the 1980s has placed many western countries with the difficult task of distinguishing between people who genuinely fear persecution and people who merely want to improve their life conditions. Since there is often little documentary evidence about individual circumstances, immigration officers carefully scrutinze the oral testimony of asylum applicants. This empirical study focuses on the communication between asylum claimants and interviewing officers. How do immigration officers ascertain credibility in encounters with asylum applicants?
