On the stable trace formula for Sp4

This paper starts by introducing a bi-periodic summation formula for automorphic forms on a group G(E), with periods by a subgroup G(F), where E/F is a quadratic extension of number fields. The split case, where E = F ⊕ F, is that of the standard trace formula. Then it introduces a notion of stable bi-conjugacy, and stabilizes the geometric side of the bi-period summation formula. Thus weighted sums in the stable bi-conjugacy class are expressed in terms of stable bi-orbital integrals. These stable integrals are on the same endoscopic groups H which occur in the case of standard conjugacy.The spectral side of the bi-period summation formula involves periods, namely integrals over the group of F-adele points of G, of cusp forms on the group of E-adele points on the group G. Our stabilization suggests that such cusp forms—with non vanishing periods—and the resulting bi-period distributions associated to “periodic” automorphic forms, are related to analogous bi-period distributions associated to “periodic” automorphic forms on the endoscopic symmetric spaces H(E)/H(F). This offers a sharpening of the theory of liftings, where periods play a key role.The stabilization depends on the “fundamental lemma”, which conjectures that the unit elements of the Hecke algebras on G and H have matching orbital integrals. Even in stating this conjecture, one needs to introduce a “transfer factor”. A generalization of the standard transfer factor to the bi-periodic case is introduced. The generalization depends on a new definition of the factors even in the standard case.Finally, the fundamental lemma is verified for SL(2).

This book uses the hypoelliptic Laplacian to evaluate semisimple orbital integrals in a formalism that unifies index theory and the trace formula. The hypoelliptic Laplacian is a family of operators that is supposed to interpolate between the ordinary Laplacian and the geodesic flow. It is essentially the weighted sum of a harmonic oscillator along the fiber of the tangent bundle, and of the generator of the geodesic flow. In this book, semisimple orbital integrals associated with the heat kernel of the Casimir operator are shown to be invariant under a suitable hypoelliptic deformation, which is constructed using the Dirac operator of Kostant. Their explicit evaluation is obtained by localization on geodesics in the symmetric space, in a formula closely related to the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formulas. Orbital integrals associated with the wave kernel are also computed. Estimates on the hypoelliptic heat kernel play a key role in the proofs, and are obtained by combining analytic, geometric, and probabilistic techniques. Analytic techniques emphasize the wavelike aspects of the hypoelliptic heat kernel, while geometrical considerations are needed to obtain proper control of the hypoelliptic heat kernel, especially in the localization process near the geodesics. Probabilistic techniques are especially relevant, because underlying the hypoelliptic deformation is a deformation of dynamical systems on the symmetric space, which interpolates between Brownian motion and the geodesic flow. We continue the analysis of the elliptic part of the trace formula for $GL(2)$ initiated in the earlier paper of the author with the same title. In that paper Poisson summation was applied to the elliptic part and the dominant term was analyzed. The main aim of this paper is to study the remaining terms after Poisson summation. We analyze the Fourier transforms of (smoothed) orbital integrals and obtain exact asymptotic expansions. As an application we recover, using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, Kuznetsov's result that the trace of the $p$th Hecke operator on cuspidal automorphic representations is bounded by $p^{\frac14}$.

We establish an invariant local trace formula for the tangent space of some symmetric spaces over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. These symmetric spaces are studied in Guo–Jacquet trace formulae, and our methods are inspired by works of Waldspurger and Arthur. Some other results are given during the proof including a noninvariant local trace formula, Howe’s finiteness for weighted orbital integrals, and the representability of the Fourier transform of weighted orbital integrals. These local results are preparations for the comparison of regular semi-simple terms, which are weighted orbital integrals, appearing in an infinitesimal variant of Guo–Jacquet trace formulae.

2 - The Trace Formula and Hecke Operators

It has been known for many years that the stabilization of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula would, or perhaps we should write will, have important consequences for the Langlands functoriality program as well as for the study of the Galois representations on the l-adic cohomology of Shimura varieties. At present, full stabilization is still only known for SL(2) and U(3) and their inner forms [LL,R]. The automorphic and arithmetic consequences of stabilization for U(3) form the subject of the influential volume [LR]. Under somewhat restrictive hypotheses, one can sometimes derive the expected corollaries of the stable trace formula. Examples of such pseudo-stabilization include Kottwitz' analysis in [K2] of the zeta functions of certain Shimura varieties attached to twisted forms of unitary groups over totally real fields, and the proof in [L1] of stable cyclic base change of automorphic representations which are locally Steinberg at at least two places. These conditional results have been used successfully to provide non-trivial examples of compatible systems of l-adic representations attached to certain classes of automorphic representations of GL(n) [C3], and of non-trivial classes of cohomology of S-arithmetic groups [BLS, L1]. Conditional results also suffice for important local applications, such as the local Langlands conjecture for GL(n) [HT, He]. The present article develops a technique for obtaining conditional base change and functorial transfer. Let Un be a unitary group over a number field F attached to a quadratic extension E/F. The technique applies to quadratic base change from Un to GL(n)E, and to transfer between inner forms of unitary groups. Roughly speaking, if p is an automorphic representation of U which is locally supercuspidal at two places of F split in E, then the expected consequences of the stable trace formula hold for p; in particular p admits a base change to a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL(n)E (Theorem 2.2.2). Slightly more general results are available when F is totally real and E is totally imaginary, and when p is of cohomological type. Automorphic descent from GL(n)E to Un can be proved under analogous hypotheses (Theorem 2.4.1, Theorem 3.1.2). Finally, we prove transfer between distinct inner forms of unitary groups (Jacquet-Langlands transfer) under quite general local hypotheses (Theorem 2.1.2 and, in a more precise form, Theorem 3.1.6 and Proposition 3.1.7). As in [L1], all results are obtained from the simple version of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, in which non-elliptic and non-cuspidal terms are absent.

Automorphic forms and Galois representations have played a central role in the development of modern number theory, with the former coming to prominence via the celebrated Langlands program and Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. This two-volume collection arose from the 94th LMS-EPSRC Durham Symposium on 'Automorphic Forms and Galois Representations' in July 2011, the aim of which was to explore recent developments in this area. The expository articles and research papers across the two volumes reflect recent interest in p-adic methods in number theory and representation theory, as well as recent progress on topics from anabelian geometry to p-adic Hodge theory and the Langlands program. The topics covered in volume one include the Shafarevich Conjecture, effective local Langlands correspondence, p-adic L-functions, the fundamental lemma, and other topics of contemporary interest.

Eisenstein series are ubiquitous in the theory of automorphic forms. The traditional proofs of the meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series, due to Selberg and Langlands, start with cuspidal Eisenstein series as a special case, and deduce the general case from spectral theory. We present a “soft” proof which relies only on rudimentary Fredholm theory (needed only in the number field case). It is valid for Eisenstein series induced from an arbitrary automorphic form. The proof relies on the principle of meromorphic continuation. It is close in spirit to Selberg’s later proofs.

We extend to the case ofodd-dimensional spheres a theorem of Lubotzky, Phillips and Sarnak giving optimally equidistributed sets of points. The proof relies on the theory of automorphic forms and higher-dimensional Shimura varieties.

With analytic applications in mind, in particular beyond endoscopy, we initiate the study of the elliptic part of the trace formula. Incorporating the approximate functional equation into the elliptic part, we control the analytic behavior of the volumes of tori that appear in the elliptic part. Furthermore, by carefully choosing the truncation parameter in the approximate functional equation, we smooth out the singularities of orbital integrals. Finally, by an application of Poisson summation we rewrite the elliptic part so that it is ready to be used in analytic applications, and in particular in beyond endoscopy. As a by product we also isolate the contributions of special representations as pointed out in [Beyond endoscopy, in Contributions to automorphic forms, geometry and number theory (Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, MD, 2004), 611–697].

This book grew out of seminar held at the University of Paris 7 during the academic year 1985-86. The aim of the seminar was to give an exposition of the theory of the Metaplectic Representation (or Weil Representation) over a p-adic field. The book begins with the algebraic theory of symplectic and unitary spaces and a general presentation of metaplectic representations. It continues with exposes on the recent work of Kudla (Howe Conjecture and induction) and of Howe (proof of the conjecture in the unramified case, representations of low rank). These lecture notes contain several original results. The book assumes some background in geometry and arithmetic (symplectic forms, quadratic forms, reductive groups, etc.), and with the theory of reductive groups over a p-adic field. It is written for researchers in p-adic reductive groups, including number theorists with an interest in the role played by the Weil Representation and -series in the theory of automorphic forms.

Colloquium talk in IISc on October 28, 2005 This article is an exposition on the ‘congruence subgroup problem’. This subject is at a common ground shared by group theory and number theory. It deals with certain groups defined arithmetically and their subgroup structure. This is a relatively modern subject having taken off in the mid 1960’s after Klein’s early investigations on the modular group. Apart from interest in its own right, the subject gains importance also because of connections with the theory of automorphic forms which is central to number theory. This exposition is meant to introduce the subject to professional mathematicians working in other areas. At the end, some recent work by the author is mentioned.

This book is a companion to the author's previous book The books' ultimate objective is to prove algebraicity of the critical values of the zeta functions of automorphic forms on unitary and symplectic groups. In the course of the study of the zeta functions, many important results, which were obtained by the author during 1960-2000, are exposed.
