A Semantic Ontology-Based Approach to Support Model-Based Systems Engineering Design for an Aircraft Prognostic Health Management System
The Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) system of an aircraft has complex structures and diverse functions. It is highly coupled with other systems, such as the avionics system and flight management system. The Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) method is effective to support the design and verification of the aircraft PHM system. As a powerful semantic web construction method, ontology has been widely used to express design information, such as the concepts and the relationships between them. However, traditional graphical MBSE models have a natural weakness in transforming into ontology. In this paper, a semantic MBSE method is proposed to support the transform of the ontology model. Firstly, according to the design characteristics of the aircraft PHM system, a meta-model library of the aircraft PHM system is developed to support the design and evaluation. An MBSE modeling method based on requirement analysis, function analysis, logical architecture design, and physic architecture design is applied in the PHM design process. Secondly, the semantic system modeling language KARMA based on “graph, object, property, point, relationship, role, and extension” (GOPPRRE) is used to transfer the graphical MBSE model to the semantic MBSE model, which can be easily transformed to an ontology model. Finally, an ontology based on semantic modeling is developed to describe the MBSE entities and to support MBSE design. In this paper, a case study of an aircraft fuel PHM system is carried out to validate the proposed method. Based on the developed meta-model library, a complete MBSE design process for the aircraft PHM system is realized. And then an ontology model supporting PHM system design is generated from the semantic MBSE model. The MBSE ontology provides a shareable capability to help designers communicate effectively. Quantitative analysis based on ontology is also provided to verify the complexity and scale of the MBSE design process. Moreover, logical reasoning ability can also be provided to support the early requirement traceability for MBSE design. In general, the case study results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method for the aircraft PHM system design.

Designing for impact: the effect of rigor and case study design on citations of qualitative case studies in management
One of the most highly cited papers in management is Eisenhardt’s (Acad Manag Rev 14(4):532–550, 1989) piece on the importance of case study research, in particular multiple cases (versus single cases), for theory building. We focus on this distinction between multiple versus single cases in the context of rigor and impact of management case studies (N = 173) published during the period 1996–2006 in Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. We find that this distinction of multiple versus single only crudely captures the reality of case study designs in published article. For this we propose an alternative empirical classification of case study design that is replication and non-replication, in which case studies using a replication logic either in single cases (e.g. comparing teams within an organization, where the case is the organization) or, indeed, multiple cases (e.g. comparing teams across multiple organizations) are more rigorous and also more impactful than cases who do not use replication logic. However, unlike in quantitative research, rigor is not a driver of article citations in qualitative studies. In this regard, our finding makes important contributions to scientrometric research by discussing criteria under which different case study designs can be rigorous and impactful.
Read moreA case study in reliability-aware design
Chip reliability becomes a great threat to the design of future microelectronic systems with the continuation of the progressive downscaling of CMOS technologies. Hence increasing the robustness of chip implementations in terms of error tolerance becomes an important issue. In this paper we present a case study in reliability-aware design tolerating transient errors. A state-of-the-art WiMAX channel decoder for LDPC codes is investigated on all design levels to increase its reliability for a given system performance with minimum hardware overhead. We show that an efficient exploitation of the algorithmic fault-tolerance yields a fairly small area overhead with nearly no degradation in communications performance even under high error injection rates.
Read moreUsing a Multiple-Case Studies Design to Investigate the Information-Seeking Behavior of Arts Administrators
The case study method, and in particular the multipleâcase studies design, offers LIS researchers a proven tool for achieving a deep understanding of a specific phenomenonâ-for example, the information-seeking behavior of a particular user group. Although the case study method has been dismissed by critics who question the rigor of the approach, numerous studies over the past twenty years have demonstrated that the case study method can be used successfully to probe beneath the surface of a situation and to provide a rich context for understanding the phenomena under study. This article summarizes the application of the multipleâcase studies design, in which a literal and theoretical replication strategy is used to identify consistent patterns of behavior and to uncover new and/or divergent themes. The motivation behind arts administrators' decisions to seek information is investigated using this approach and examples are given of sample selection, data collection, and analysis. Specific issues associated with the case study method are identified and practical steps used to address them are suggested.

Objective : Drug abuse in adolescents is a serious problem that affects their physical, psychological, and social health. In addition, the problem of ineffective coping has a frequent impact on drug users. Data from the National Narcotics Agency show that out of 34.7 million drug users in Indonesia, the prevalence of drug attacks in West Java is at 2.45%, with a total of 850 thousand people in the age range of 10-59 years. It is hoped that this can help adolescent drug users overcome ineffective coping problems through better selfunderstanding, managing emotions, improving social skills, and forming healthy groups. Method : This research method uses a case study design. The case study design was chosen because this study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the application of psychosocial rehabilitation to adolescent drug users with ineffective coping problems. The implementation of this research lasted for 10 days located in Banjarsari District. Result : The results of the case study after being given psychosocial rehabilitation the client's coping becomes effective and regular, the client can assess the positive aspects that can be done. Clients are able to carry out methods of implementing psychosocial rehabilitation. Conclusion and Recommendations : By paying attention to the physical, psychological and social aspects of this process can help adolescents to overcome the problem of ineffective coping. Support from the family and encouragement from the social environment also influence the recovery process.

The MATLAB M language provides constructs for the simple representation of functions, and has been used extensively for algorithm development and verification in embedded system design. The M language processes entire arrays simultaneously, and it is expected that design based on M can be implemented faster and with the same or higher quality as compared with design based on other languages. This paper presents a case study of a design of a filter for signal processing using M-based design flow. The results of the case study demonstrate the high efficiency of the M-based design flow as compared to traditional functional modeling and manual coding using a hardware description language.
Read moreSpecial issue on multidimensional systems applications
Although originally motivated by applications such as image processing, multidimensional (nD) systems have mainly attracted the attention of the research community due to the richness of new theoretical questions raised by their treatment, and are often replaced by other settings when it comes to modelling, identifying and controlling processes in practical situations. The aim of this special issue is to illustrate the application potential of nD systems by presenting several contributions where the nD framework is successfully used either to deal with practical problems or to solve practically relevant questions that arise in other contexts that are not at first sight related to multidimensional systems. In the paper Multidimensional Control Systems: Case Studies in Design and Evaluation, by Rogers et al., after introducing the most commonly used models for the analysis and control of discrete nD linear systems, a series of case studies is presented with the aim of demonstrating the advantages of the nD systems approach in solving certain control problems. Namely, applications in the fields of sensor grid networks, iterative learning control, civil engineering and agriculture are considered. The paper Two-dimensional Generalized Predictive Control (2D-GPC) Scheme for the Batch Processes with Two-dimensional (2D)Dynamics, Shi et al. studies the problem of iterative learning control (ILC) design for batch processes. Based on 2Dcontrolled auto-regressive moving average (2D-CARMA) model, a novel two-dimensional generalized predictive control (2D-GPC) is proposed. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the experimental results on packing pressure control of the injection molding process.

USING BIOLOGICAL ANALOGIES FOR ENGINEERING PROBLEM SOLVING AND DESIGN
This paper summarizes various aspects of identifying and using biological analogies in engineering design. To avoid the immense as well as potentially biased task of creating a database specifically for this purpose, the chosen approach searches biological knowledge in natural language format, e.g., books, papers, etc., for instances of functional keywords describing the engineering problem. Strategies developed to facilitate this search as well how text descriptions of biological phenomena were used in problem solving are summarized. Case studies in design for remanufacture and microassembly are used to provide an overview of the method.
