Optimal Control Implementation for Linear Systems Via Riccati Equation.(Dept.E)

This paper is concerned with the optimal output synchronization control problem for a class of heterogeneous complex dynamical networks (CDNs) with partially unknown system dynamics. By defining a new quadratic performance index including the information of state couplings, an optimal controller consisting of a feedback control and a compensated feedforward control is then designed. A necessary and sufficient condition for the optimal control minimizing the quadratic performance index is established. Especially, an algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) associated with a discount factor is obtained, and a novel online iteration algorithm by iteratively solving the ARE is proposed to compute the optimal controller gain for the case that the CDNs are with partially unknown system dynamics. Moreover, it is proved that the output synchronization errors converge to zero asymptotically by applying the optimal control laws. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

In this paper, we study the optimal control problem for Takagi–Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with disturbances. Due to the presence of disturbances in the T-S fuzzy systems, a fuzzy optimal state feedback control approach is presented by employing a two-player zero-sum game. Since the analytical optimal control solutions and the worst-case disturbance policies of T-S fuzzy systems can be boiled down to solving the algebraic Riccati equations (AREs), which are difficult to be obtained directly, a model-free policy iteration (PI) learning algorithm is proposed to obtain their approximation solutions. It is proved that the developed fuzzy optimal state feedback controller can ensure the fuzzy systems to be asymptotically stable and satisfy the disturbance attenuation condition simultaneously. Also, the designed PI learning algorithm can converge to their optimal solutions. Finally, we apply the developed fuzzy optimal state feedback control method to the truck-trailer system and the simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed scheme.

Rapid advances in information processing, communication and sensing technologies have enabled more and more devices to be provided with embedded processors, networking capabilities and sensors. For the field of estimation and control, it is now possible to consider an architecture in which many simple components communicate and cooperate to achieve a joint team goal. This distributed (or networked) architecture promises much in terms of performance, reliability and simplicity of design; however, at the same time, it requires extending the traditional theories of control, communication and computation and, in fact, looking at a unified picture of the three fields. A systematic theory of how to design distributed systems is currently lacking. This dissertation takes the first steps towards understanding the effects of imperfect information flow in distributed systems from an estimation and control perspective and coming up with new design principles to counter these effects. Designing networked systems is difficult because such systems challenge two basic assumptions of traditional control theory - presence of a central node with access to all the information about the system and perfect transmission of information among components. We formulate and solve many problems that deal with the removal of one, or both, of these assumptions. The chief idea explored in this dissertation is the joint design of information flow and the control law. While traditional control design has concentrated on calculating the optimal control input by assuming a particular information flow between the components, our approach seeks to synthesize the optimal information flow along with the optimal control law that satisfies the constraints of the information flow. Thus besides the question of 'What should an agent do?', the questions of 'Whom should an agent talk to?', 'What should an agent communicate?', 'When should an agent communicate?' and so on also have to be answered. The design of the information flow represents an important degree of freedom available to the system designer that has hitherto largely been ignored. As we demonstrate in the dissertation, the joint design of information flow and the optimal control input satisfying the constraints of that information flow yields large improvements in performance over simply trying to fit traditional design theories on distributed systems. We begin by formulating a distributed control problem in which many agents in a formation need to cooperate to minimize a joint cost function. We provide numerical algorithms to synthesize the optimal constrained control law that involve solving linear equations only and hence are free from numerical issues plaguing the other approaches proposed in the literature. We then provide and analyze a model to understand the issue of designing the topology according to which the agents interact. The results are very surprising since there are cases when allowing communication to happen between two agents may, in fact, be detrimental to the performance. We then move on to consider the effects of communication channels on control performance. To counter such effects, we propose the idea of encoding information for the purpose of estimation and control prior to transmission. Although information theoretic techniques are not possible in our problem, we are able to solve for a recursive yet optimal encoder / decoder structure in many cases. This information flow design oriented approach has unique advantages such as being optimal for any packet drop pattern, being able to include the effect of known but random delays easily, letting us escape the limits set by reliability for transmission of data across a network by using intermediate nodes as 'repeaters' similar to a digital communication network and so on. We finally take a look at combining the effects of multiple sources of information and communication channels on estimation and control. We look at a distributed estimation problem in which, at every time step, only a subset out of many sensors can transmit information to the estimator. This is also a representative resource allocation problem. We propose the idea of stochastic communication patterns that allows us to include the effects of communication channels explicitly during system design. Thus, instead of tree-search based algorithms proposed in the literature, we provide stochastic scheduling algorithms that can take into account the random packet drop effect of the channels. We also consider a distributed control problem with switching topologies and solve for the optimal controller. The tools that we develop are applicable to many other scenarios and we demonstrate some of them in the dissertation. Along the way, we look at many other related problems in the dissertation. As an example, we provide initial results about the issue of robustness of a distributed system design to a malfunctioning agent. This notion is currently lacking in the control and estimation community, but has to be a part of any effective theory for designing networked or distributed systems.

Global optimal feedback control for general nonlinear systems with nonquadratic performance criteria

In this paper, we present an optimal control approach using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) for trajectory tracking control of a three-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot in the presence of external disturbances on the robot's actuators and noise in the robot's sensor measurements. First, a state-space representation of the omnidirectional robot dynamics is derived using a point-mass dynamic model. Then, we propose an LMI-based full-state feedback H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal controller for the tracking problem. The robot's tracking performance with the H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal controller is compared to its performance with a classical full-state feedback tracking controller in simulations with circular and bowtie-shaped reference trajectories. In order to evaluate our proposed controller in practice, we also implement the H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal and classical controllers for these reference trajectories on a three-wheeled omnidirectional robot. The H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal controller guarantees stabilization of the robot motion and attenuates the effects of frictional disturbances and measurement noise on the robot's tracking performance. Using the H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal controller, the robot is able to track the reference trajectories with up to a 47.8% and 45.8% decrease in the maximum pose and twist errors, respectively, over a full cycle of the trajectory compared to the classical controller. The simulation and experimental results show that our LMI-based H <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">∞</sub> -optimal controller is robust to undesired effects of disturbances and noise on the dynamic behavior of the robot during trajectory tracking and can outperform the classical controller in attenuating their effects.

This thesis aims at developing efficient mathematical methods for solving hierarchical dynamic optimization problems. The main motivation is to model processes in nature, for which there is evidence to assume that they run optimally. We describe models of such processes by optimal control problems (called optimal control models (OCMs)). However, an OCM typically includes unknown parameters that cannot be derived entirely on a theoretical basis, which is in particular the case for the cost function. Therefore, we develop parameter estimation techniques to estimate the unknowns in an OCM from observation data of the process. Mathematically, this leads to a hierarchical dynamic optimization problem with a parameter estimation problem on the upper level and an optimal control problem on the lower level. We focus on multi-stage equality and inequality constrained optimal control problems based on nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The main goal of this thesis is to derive numerically efficient mathematical methods for solving hierarchical dynamic optimization problems, and to use these methods to estimate parameters in high-dimensional OCMs from real-world measurement data. We develop parameter-dependent OCMs for the gait of cerebral palsy patients and able-bodied subjects. The unknown parameters in the OCMs are then estimated from real-world motion capture data provided by the Heidelberg MotionLab of the Orthopedic University Clinic Heidelberg by using the mathematical methods developed within this work. The main novelties and contributions of this thesis to the field of hierarchical dynamic optimization are summarized herein. - We establish a novel mathematical method, a so-called direct all-at-once approach, for solving hierarchical dynamic optimization problems based on the direct multiple shooting method and first-order optimality conditions. - Furthermore, we propose an efficient numerical algorithm for large-scale hierarchical dynamic optimization problems, which fully exploits the structures inherited from both the hierarchical setting and the discretization. - Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to analyze solution properties of hierarchical dynamic optimization problems like second-order optimality conditions of the lower-level problem. - In addition, we propose and discuss alternative methods for hierarchical dynamic optimization that are based on derivative-free optimization and a bundle approach. These methods keep the hierarchical problem setting and do not reformulate the lower-level problem using first-order optimality conditions. - We establish a novel lifting method for regularizing mathematical programs with complementarity constraints, which is discussed and numerically investigated by means of a well-known collection of benchmark problems. - Proofs of regularity and convergence results for sequential quadratic programming methods applied to lifted mathematical programs with complementarity constraints are provided. - Efficient state-of-the-art implementations of all mathematical methods derived in this thesis, as well as a benchmark collection of hierarchical dynamic optimization problems are presented. - High-dimensional optimal control gait models for cerebral palsy patients and able-bodied subjects are developed. The mathematical methods derived in this thesis are used to estimate the unknown model parameters from real-world motion capture data provided by the Heidelberg MotionLab of the Orthopedic University Clinic Heidelberg. The theoretical and practical results presented in this thesis can be considered an initial motivating step towards answering open questions in current medical research in fields like treatment planning, classification of gaits, or the evaluation of surgeries by means of hierarchical dynamic optimization.

In this paper, the nonlinear optimal control problem is investigated for spacecraft formation flying with collision avoidance. Based on a nonlinear model of formation flying, two optimal tracking control laws are proposed to ensure the formation pattern converges to the predetermined configuration. The first optimal control law which combines Lyapunov optimizing control with a trajectory-following optimization technique is developed to solve the finite-time nonlinear optimal control problem. For the second controller, an extended [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] method is applied to design a closed-form feedback control scheme for nonlinear control problem of spacecraft formation flying with non-standard cost functions. By taking into account the flying safety, a repulsive control scheme is incorporated in the optimal controller to ensure collision avoidance and minimize the performance index. Finally, a numerical example is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Design of an intelligent optimal neural network-based tracking controller for nonholonomic mobile robot systems

A EROSPACE engineering applications greatly stimulated the development of optimal control theory during the 1950s and 1960s, where the objective was to drive the system states in such a way that some defined cost was minimized. This turned out to have very useful applications in the design of regulators (where some steady state is to be maintained) and in tracking control strategies (where some predetermined state trajectory is to be followed). Among such applications was the problem of optimal flight trajectories for aircraft and space vehicles. Linear optimal control theory in particular has been very well documented and widely applied, where the plant that is controlled is assumed linear and the feedback controller is constrained to be linear with respect to its input. However, the availability of powerful low-cost microprocessors has spurred great advantages in the theory and applications of nonlinear control. The competitive era of rapid technological change, particularly in aerospace exploration, now demands stringent accuracy and cost requirements in nonlinear control systems. This has motivated the rapid development of nonlinear control theory for application to challenging, complex, dynamical real-world problems, particularly those that bear major practical significance in aerospace, marine, and defense industries. Infinite-time horizon nonlinear optimal control (ITHNOC) presents a viable option for synthesizing stabilizing controllers for nonlinear systems by making a state-input tradeoff, where the objective is to minimize the cost given by a performance index. The original theory of nonlinear optimal control dates from the 1960s. Various theoretical and practical aspects of the problem have been addressed in the literature over the decades since. In particular, the continuous-time nonlinear deterministic optimal control problem associated with autonomous (time-invariant) nonlinear regulator systems that are affine (linear) in the controls has been studied by many authors. The long-established theory of optimal control offers quite mature and well-documented techniques for solving this control-affine nonlinear optimization problem, based on dynamic programming or calculus of variations, but their application is generally a very tedious task. Bellman’s dynamic programming approach reduces to solving a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation (PDE), expressed by the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation. The solution to the HJB equation gives the optimal performance/cost value (or storage) function and determines an optimal control in feedback form under some smoothness assumptions. Alternatively, in the classical calculus of variations, optimal control problems can be characterized locally in terms of the Hamiltonian dynamics arising from Pontryagin’s minimum principle. These are the characteristic equations of the HJB PDE, which result in a nonlinear, constrained two-point boundary value problem (TPBVP) that, in general, can only be solved by successive approximation of the optimal control input using iterative numerical techniques for each set of initial conditions. Numerically, even though the nonlinear TPBVP is somewhat easier to solve than the HJBPDE, control signals can only be determined offline and are thus best suited for feedforward control of plants for which the state trajectories are known a priori. Therefore, contrary to the dynamic programming approach, the resultant control law is not generally in feedback form. Open-loop control, however, is sensitive to random disturbances and requires that the initial state be on the optimal trajectory. In contrast, nonlinear optimal feedback has inherent robustness properties (inherent in the sense that it is obtained by ignoring uncertainty and disturbances). The potential difficulty with the HJB approach is that no efficient algorithm is available to solve the PDE when it is nonlinear and the problem dimension is high, making it impossible to derive exact expressions for optimal controls for most nontrivial problems of interest. The optimal can only be computed in special cases, such as linear dynamics and quadratic cost, or very low-dimensional systems. In particular, if the plant is linear time invariant (LTI) and the (infinite-time) performance index is quadratic, then the corresponding HJB equation for this infamous linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) problem reduces to an algebraic Riccati equation (ARE). Contrary to the well-developed and widely applied theory and computational tools for theRiccati equation (for example, see [1]), theHJB equation is difficult, if not impossible, to solve for most practical applications. The exact solution for the optimal control policies is very complex

This paper is the second of two in which the system studied has a plant which consists of two integrators with a saturable control input, and the performance criterion which is to be minimized is integral-error-squared. In the first paper the known optimum controller was shown to satisfy Pontryagin's maximum principle. In the present paper further verification of the optimum system is obtained by showing that the best performance function satisfies Bellman's partial differential equation. It is found that Bellman's equation is even satisfied for points on the switching curve, Results are also given for other performance criteria.

In this article, the optimal boundary control for a generalised Korteweg–de Vries equation is considered. The Dubovitskii and Milyutin functional analytical approach is adopted in the investigation of Pontryagin's maximum principles of the system in both fixed and free final horizon cases. The necessary conditions are, respectively, presented for the optimal boundary control problems in these two cases.

Optimal control of wave energy converters with non-integer order performance indices: A dynamic programming approach

The centralized paradigm of a single controller and a single plant upon which modern control theory is built is no longer applicable to modern cyber-physical systems of interest, such as the power-grid, software defined networks or automated highways systems, as these are all large-scale and spatially distributed. Both the scale and the distributed nature of these systems has motivated the decentralization of control schemes into local sub-controllers that measure, exchange and act on locally available subsets of the globally available system information. This decentralization of control logic leads to different decision makers acting on asymmetric information sets, introduces the need for coordination between them, and perhaps not surprisingly makes the resulting optimal control problem much harder to solve. In fact, shortly after such questions were posed, it was realized that seemingly simple decentralized optimal control problems are computationally intractable to solve, with the Wistenhausen counterexample being a famous instance of this phenomenon. Spurred on by this perhaps discouraging result, a concerted 40 year effort to identify tractable classes of distributed optimal control problems culminated in the notion of quadratic invariance, which loosely states that if sub-controllers can exchange information with each other at least as quickly as the effect of their control actions propagates through the plant, then the resulting distributed optimal control problem admits a convex formulation. The identification of quadratic invariance as an appropriate means of convexifying distributed optimal control problems led to a renewed enthusiasm in the controller synthesis community, resulting in a rich set of results over the past decade. The contributions of this thesis can be seen as being a part of this broader family of results, with a particular focus on closing the gap between theory and practice by relaxing or removing assumptions made in the traditional distributed optimal control framework. Our contributions are to the foundational theory of distributed optimal control, and fall under three broad categories, namely controller synthesis, architecture design and system identification. We begin by providing two novel controller synthesis algorithms. The first is a solution to the distributed H∞ optimal control problem subject to delay constraints, and provides the only known exact characterization of delay-constrained distributed controllers satisfying an H∞ norm bound. The second is an explicit dynamic programming solution to a two player LQR state-feedback problem with varying delays. Accommodating varying delays represents an important first step in combining distributed optimal control theory with the area of Networked Control Systems that considers lossy channels in the feedback loop. Our next set of results are concerned with controller architecture design. When designing controllers for large-scale systems, the architectural aspects of the controller such as the placement of actuators, sensors, and the communication links between them can no longer be taken as given -- indeed the task of designing this architecture is now as important as the design of the control laws themselves. To address this task, we formulate the Regularization for Design (RFD) framework, which is a unifying computationally tractable approach, based on the model matching framework and atomic norm regularization, for the simultaneous co-design of a structured optimal controller and the architecture needed to implement it. Our final result is a contribution to distributed system identification. Traditional system identification techniques such as subspace identification are not computationally scalable, and destroy rather than leverage any a priori information about the system's interconnection structure. We argue that in the context of system identification, an essential building block of any scalable algorithm is the ability to estimate local dynamics within a large interconnected system. To that end we propose a promising heuristic for identifying the dynamics of a subsystem that is still connected to a large system. We exploit the fact that the transfer function of the local dynamics is low-order, but full-rank, while the transfer function of the global dynamics is high-order, but low-rank, to formulate this separation task as a nuclear norm minimization problem. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion of future research directions, with a particular emphasis on how to incorporate the results of this thesis, and those of optimal control theory in general, into a broader theory of dynamics, control and optimization in layered architectures.
