Performance of AODV routing protocol in Mobile Ad Hoc Network

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are considered as a new paradigm of infrastructure-less mobile wireless communication systems. MANETs are being widely studied and it is the technology that is attracting a large variety of applications. Routing in MANETs is considered a challenging task due to the unpredictable changes in the network topology, resulting from the random and frequent movement of the nodes and due to the absence of any centralized control [1][2]. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of reactive routing protocols, Ad hoc On demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and proactive routing protocol Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV). The major goal of this study is to analyze the performance of well known MANETs routing protocol in high mobility case under low, medium and high density scenario. Unlike military applications, most of the other applications of MANETs require moderate to high mobility. Hence it becomes important to study the impact of high mobility on the performance of these routing protocols. The performance is analyzed with respect to Average End-to-End Delay, Normalized Routing Load (NRL), Packet Delivery Fraction (PDF) and Throughput. Simulation results verify that AODV gives better performance as compared to DSR and DSDV.

Ad Hoc Routing with Distributed Ordered Sequences

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is one of the up-to-date technologies supporting communication of mobile devices. It consists of an open environment that comprises a set of mobile, decentralized, and self-organized nodes. MANET is harder to be secured than the other types of static networks. There are many types of attacks that could paralyze the life of the mobile nodes in MANET. One of the most dangerous attacks is the Denial of Service attack (DoS), which in turn could be performed through the Resource Consumption Attack (RCA) over Ad-hoc On demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol. This paper analyzes and studies the RCA effecting factors on AODV performance metrics namely throughput and end-to-end delay under varying the number of connections between the source and the destination and number of RCA attackers number. Keywords: MANET, Resource Consumption Attack, Denial of Service attack, AODV routing protocol.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a subclass of Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) which provides the safety measure and other different applications to the drivers of the vehicles. The goal of VANET is to fulfil the requirements of users on roadside area, which improves the safe and comfortable journey. Secure routing is the main issue in VANET. Dynamic topology and wireless networking makes the VANET vulnerable to numerous sorts of attacks. Wormhole is one of the extreme assaults in VANET. This type of attack disturbs the working of routing protocol such as Ad hoc On demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol. The motivation of this research work is that by using proposed detection and prevention approach the VANET can be made more secure. The results show how the performance of AODV routing protocol is affected by wormhole. In this research paper the impact of wormhole attack is analysed in terms of throughput, packer delivery ratio, and end-to-end delay. An approach is also proposed to detect and prevent wormhole attack in VANET over a real map on different vehicle densities based on multipath concept.

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is lacking infrastructure support, so nodes of MANET are vulnerable to attacks. Denial of Service attacks (DOS) makes network inaccessible to users. Black hole attack is a type of DOS attack, in which mischievous node claims that it has a route towards the destination node. Ad Hoc on Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol is affected by Black hole attack. The proposed solution is based on first Route Reply (RREP) caching mechanism in AODV protocol. Simulation results show performance improvement in routing protocol.

Problem statement: This study propose an improvement of Ad Hoc on Demand Distance Vector (AODV) Routing protocol in order to include some of the aspects of ad hoc networks such as load balancing, congestion avoidance and avoidance of link breakage. Approach: The most important problem nowadays is link breakage which mainly occurs due to excessive load and congestion in the network. Each node contains a buffer in order to detect the congestion in the network. Thus it selects a route from source to destination to avoid congestion and balance the load. The threshold value is initially set to a pre-determined value. Once the buffer crosses the threshold value, then packet forwarding is carried out via alternate path. Results: As a result, the proposed protocol Secure Enhanced Authenticated Routing Protocol (SEARP) avoids congestion and balances the load to avoid link failure. Conclusion: By detailed simulation studies, we show that even in high mobility scenario, SEARP achieves better packet delivery ratio with reduced delay and overhead compared to AODV protocol.

6LoWPAN has become a new technology to provide the Internet connectivity to the traditional wireless sensor network (WSN). In order to route the delivered packet from originator to destination nodes, the simplified Ad-hoc On- Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol for 6LoWPAN with 6LoWPAN Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (LOAD) has been introduced. However, the conceptual LOAD routing protocol has yet proposed any path recovery mechanism in 6LoWPAN. In this paper, an originator recognition (OR) path recovery mechanism is proposed for the 6LoWPAN LOAD-based routing protocol. In this proposed mechanism, the participated nodes will memorize the originator address attached within data packet during the data transmission. When a link break happens on destination path, the LOAD protocol message will be amended by inserting an identity key, which is a memorial of originator address, in the generated route error (RERR) message before transmitted towards the originator for the failure notification. This identity key is then used by the originator to initialize path recovery in order to retransmit the failed data packet to the unreachable destination node. Instead of using MAC address in the LOAD routing protocol, IP address is used in the proposed Originator Recognition (OR) path recovery mechanism (OR-LOAD) routing protocol which is designed for the global routing. The proposed OR-LOAD routing protocol has been examined under noisy 6LoWPAN environment in Qualnet simulator. Its performance is then evaluated and compared to AODV routing protocol in terms of packet delivery ratio and average energy consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed OR-LOAD outperforms AODV with packet delivery ratio of 19.4%, and with comparable average energy consumption in both routing protocols.

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network represents a system of wireless mobile nodes that can freely and dynamically selforganize into arbitrary and temporary network topologies, allowing people and devices to seamlessly communicate without any pre-existing communication architecture. The growth of real time multimedia application in such environments, has drawn a lot of attention to wireless networks that support quality of service (QoS). In this work, the QoS metrics, delay and link life time (LLT) of the path are dynamically calculated. Based on these values the routing decisions are made. Here the multipath routing protocol is taken as the base protocol. The proposed algorithm finds the multiple QoS routes only, based on the QoS metrics and stores only those paths in the routing table. The route is selected based on the integrated QoS metric and is used to transmit the data. The base protocol used is multipath AODV(Ad Hoc On demand Distance Vector ) routing protocol. The proposed protocol may take extra time during route discovery process to compute the additional QoS parameters, but this time is compensated by having only QoS paths for data transmission. A few patents on the QoS Routing for MANETS have been reviewed. The simulator NS-2.34 is used to simulate and compare the performance of the protocols in terms of the QoS metrics such as end-to-end delay, PDR in the MANET. A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) protocol requires proper settings to perform data transmission optimally. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to select the correct routing protocol and use the routing protocol’s default parameter values. This study examined the effect of route request parameters, such as RREQ_RETRIES and MAX_RREQ_TIMOUT, on the Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol, which was then compared with the default AODV performance Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocols. The performance metrics used for measuring performance were Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), throughput, delay, packet loss, energy consumption, and routing overhead. The results show that the OLSR protocol has a smaller delay than the AODV protocol, while in other measurements, the AODV protocol is better than OLSR. By reducing the combination value of RREQ_RETRIES, MAX_RREQ_TIMEOUT in AODV routing to (2, 10 s) and (3, 5 s), the protocol’s performance can be improved. The two combinations result in an average increase in throughput performance of 3.09%, a decrease in delay of 17.7%, a decrease in packet loss of 27.15%, and an increase in PDR of 4.8%. For variations in the speed of movement of nodes, 20 m/s has the best performance, while 5 m/s has the worst performance.

Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a dynamic network without fixed infrastructure due to their wireless nature and can be deployed as multi-hop packet networks. It is a wireless network and has dynamic topology due to its node mobility. Networks are being used in various areas and the demand of users nowadays has motivated the emergence of the heterogeneous MANET. Compared to homogeneous MANET, heterogeneous MANET is more open to other types of network for example wireless LAN, cellular network and fixed network. In MANET, the concern is more to configuration and one of the important elements in configuration is routing. Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) is one of the routing protocols in MANET which can compromise with MANET characteristics. The aim of this research is to assess the performance of AODV in different mobility speed for homogeneous MANET and heterogeneous MANET through the simulation method. The simulation scenarios derived from the HetMAN architecture (as been discussed in previous work) have been developed in the OMNeT++ network simulator. The results achieved from the test have been evaluated using the metrics assigned; throughput and packet delivery ratio (PDR). The tests show that, as the speed increase, the throughput and PDR decrease for both homogeneous and heterogeneous MANET. From the test also, we can conclude that the performance in homogeneous MANET is better than in heterogeneous MANET.

Networks are being used in various areas and the demand of users nowadays has motivated the emergence of the Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET). MANET is a dynamic network without fixed infrastructure due to their wireless nature and can be deployed as multi-hop packet networks. It is a wireless network and has dynamic topology due to its node mobility. There are two types of MANET, homogeneous and heterogeneous MANET. An architecture has been designed in previous work to model these two types of MANET. Three scenarios have been defined from this architecture: scenario I (communication entirely within MANET, homogeneous MANET), scenario II (communication between MANET and wireless LAN, heterogeneous MANET) and scenario III (communication between MANET with wireless LAN and wired LAN, heterogeneous MANET). MANET has its own routing protocols which can compromised with frequent route exchange, dynamic topology, bandwidth constraint and multi-hop routing. Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) is one of the routing protocols in MANET. The aim of this research is to assess the effects of different packet size with the implementation of AODV routing protocols in homogeneous and heterogeneous MANET through the simulation method. The three scenarios above have been developed in the OMNeT++ network simulator. The results achieved from the test have been evaluated using the metrics assigned, throughput and packet delivery ratio (PDR). The tests show that the increase of throughput and PDR performance was parallel with the increase of packet size. From the test also, we can conclude that the performance due to the packet size effect in homogeneous MANET is better than in heterogeneous MANET.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) pose challenges in terms of power control, due to their fixed transmission power, the mobility of nodes and a constantly changing topology. High levels of power are needed in wireless networks, particularly for routing. In order to address this problem, power aware routing protocols have been proposed, with the aim of maximising the lifetime of the network. This paper presents an enhancement to the Ad Hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol, by reducing transmission power, when a large number of other radios are within range. This protocol, called DP-AODV (Dynamic Power AODV) combines the hello packet mechanism and the power control mechanism in order to reduce interference between nodes and increase the throughput in the network, thus reducing the overall power consumption. A performance evaluation of this enhanced protocol is carried out in comparison with three standard routing protocols, Ad Hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Ad Hoc On Demand Multipath Distance Vector (AOMDV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), using network simulator 2 (NS2). Today, the use of Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is becoming increasingly popular due to its flexibility and ease of use wherever and whenever. MANET is able to adapt to many applications, such as disaster management and military operations. The MANET routing protocol consists of two types, namely Proactive Routing Protocols and On Demand Routing Protocols. Destination-Sequence Distance-Vector (DSDV) is an example of a protocol that includes Proactive Routing Protocols. Meanwhile, Ad Hoc on-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) are examples of protocols that include On Demand Routing Protocols or Reactive Routing Protocols. Because routing protocols greatly affect MANET performance significantly, it is necessary to study the performance of routing protocols. This paper discusses the performance comparison of MANET routing protocol based on RandomWaypoint mobility model. The experiment was carried out by applying the MANET routing protocol to the RandomWaypoint mobility model. Routing protocols used are AODV, DSDV and DSR. The simulation is done using NS-2 software. The total of nodes used in simulations is 100, 150, 200 and 250 nodes respectively. Length of simulation time 900 s. The simulation area take place in urban residential areas. Performance evaluation is performed on variable packet delivery ratio (PDR), throughput, average end to end delay, packet loss and normalized routing load (NRL).

Performance of routing protocols rely on the node mobility, network size, traffic volume, and connectivity patterns. Increasing number of connections in the wireless network creates more data section and incurs more collision. Therefore, there is a need of identifying efficient routing protocol to provide call services in such network. In this paper, we analyze the performance of routing protocols like dynamic source routing (DSR), ad hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) and Destination-Sequenced Distance-Vector (DSDV) for different network sizes creating multiple TCP connections for different mobile nodes considering random way point (RWP) mobility model. Result shows that AODV protocol achieves higher throughput and packet delivery ratio (PDR) at the cost of more packet loss and routing overhead and DSR achieves lower delay as compared to others.

The rapid development of wireless communication technologies and portable mobile devices such as laptops, PDAs, smart phones and wireless sensors brings the best out of mobile computing particularly mobile ad-hoc and sensor networks. Nowadays, most of researchers working on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) focus on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Networks (MASNETs) due to their wide range of potential applications ranging from underwater monitoring to search and rescue mobile robotics applications. In this research work, through extensive simulation, we have evaluated the capability of Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol on how far it can react to different mobility duration of mobile nodes in MASNETs. The performance of AODV is investigated in terms of the average percentage of packet loss and energy consumption. The initial performance study demonstrates that the performance of AODV is signicantly decreased in mobile environment due to the frequent topology change in MASNETs. Therefore, in order to enhance the performance of AODV in MASNETs, the new routing algorithm based on the estimated distance is proposed to replace the hop count for the selection of next node during the packet transmission. The estimated distance is computed based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values that are collected during the communication between the sensor nodes. The performance of the proposed solution is also further evaluated and compared with the existing AODV routing protocol in term of their energy consumption and percentage of packet loss. Our study demonstrates that the proposed solution outperform the existing AODV in MASNETs.
