Predictive mobility applied to content centric networks

Named Data Networking (NDN) has emerged as a promising information-centric networking paradigm that addresses the limitations of the traditional IP-based Internet architecture. The core principle of NDN relies on content naming instead of host addressing, to provide efficient, secure, and scalable content delivery. Routing is a critical component of NDN and is responsible for discovering and maintaining optimal paths to named content. This paper presents a comprehensive review of routing techniques in NDN, focusing on the design principles, algorithms, and performance metrics, especially in wired network architecture. We first summarize the NDN architecture and discuss its key components. We then delve into the fundamental routing concepts in NDN and categorize and examine various routing techniques, including link state, distance vector, and centralized approaches based on Software Defined Network. We also summarize the relevant research efforts proposed to address NDN routing challenges by focusing more on wired network architecture. Finally, we identify open research issues and future directions in NDN routing, emphasizing the need for scalable, efficient, and secure routing techniques that can fulfill the growing demands of the modern Internet. In conclusion, this review serves as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in NDN, offering a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-the-art routing techniques, limitations, and potential future advancements.

To provide seamless mobility support for the User in NDN (Named Data Networking) based cloud storage service, we propose a proxy based mobility support approach, called PMNDN. In this approach, we first introduce an ID that is structurally similar to the content name, to maintain the routing scalability of NDN architecture, and improve the addressing efficiency of INTEREST packet for NDN-based cloud storage service. Then, we deploy a new functional entity named Proxy, which is responsible for maintaining the reach-ability state of the User. We also extend the basic functionalities of the NDN Access Routers, such as tracking the mobility status of the User and initiating the handoff related signaling to the Proxy. With that, the User avoids participation in mobility signaling exchange. Finally, we construct an elastic 3-layer network analysis model, and compare the handoff performance of the mobility support approaches with that in NDN architecture and IPv6 architecture via analytical and simulation investigation. Our results indicate that not only PMNDN has lower handoff cost, it also has shorter handoff latency and less packet losses during the handoff process.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a newly proposed next-generation Internet architecture that uses the name of data to forward and route packets. As a potential candidate for future Internet architecture, it is crucial to address the security and privacy issues in NDN. NDN is vulnerable to a new type of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks called Interest Flooding Attacks (IFAs). The attackers can send a massive amount of Interest requests to overwhelm the Pending Interest Table (PIT) at routers resulting in network disruption for legitimate users. In this paper, we propose a Binary Tree-Based Interest Flooding Attack Detection and Mitigation Scheme (BTIFADMS) to protect NDNs. The proposed scheme allows each NDN router to use binary trees to detect IFAs and mitigates IFAs by limiting the number of Interest requests forwarded from the contaminated routers. The simulation evaluation shows that BTIFADMS can quickly and accurately identify and respond to the IFAs in the NDNs.

Named Data Networking is one of the most promising future Internet architectures with many advanced characteristics that are lacking in the existing TCP/IP-based Internet architecture. NDN features named content, built-in security, in-network caching, adaptive traffic routing, and multi-path forwarding. NDN can be used to mitigate traffic congestion and prioritize critical messages in both wired and wireless networks. It has particular advantages to deliver traffic over a disrupted and highly dynamic network environment because of its delay-tolerant and content-centric features. However, very few works have shown the real-world capacity of NDN over different types of network links. In this work, we benchmark the performance of NDN in various real network settings and make side-by-side comparisons with TCP/IP based approaches. We also demonstrate the strong capabilities of flexible forwarding strategies through prioritizing critical traffic over the network.

Named data networking (NDN) is a new Internet architecture that replaces today’s focus on where – addresses and hosts with what – the content that users and applications care about. One of NDN’s prominent advantages is scalable and efficient content distribution due to its native support of caching and multicast in the network. However, at the last hop to wireless users, often the WiFi link, current NDN implementation still treats the communication as multiple unicast sessions, which will cause duplicate packets and waste of bandwidth when multiple users request for the same popular content. WiFi’s built-in broadcast mechanism can alleviate this problem, but it suffers from packet loss since there is no MAC-layer acknowledgement as in unicast. In this paper, we develop a new NDN-based cross-layer approach called NLB for efficient and scalable live video streaming over wireless LAN. The core ideas are: using WiFi’s broadcast channel to deliver content from the access point to the users, a leader-based mechanism to suppress duplicate requests from users, and receiver-driven rate control and loss recovery. The design is implemented and evaluated in a physical testbed comprised of one software AP and 20 Raspberry Pi-based WiFi clients. While NDN with multiple unicast sessions or plain broadcast can support no more than ten concurrent viewers of a 1Mbps streaming video, NDN plus NLB supports all 20 viewers, and Received December 29, 2015; accepted April 28, 2016 E-mail: zhxp@tsinghua.edu.cn can likely support much more when present.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the more reliable and flexible networking architecture. Due to its programmable nature, it is getting more popular in every research domain of Computing. Moreover, Named Data Networking (NDN) architecture is also more beneficial and emerging technology of Internet. NDN focuses on the content name instead of its location and replaces the usage of IP addresses. Lot of research has been made to integrate SDN and NDN due to their benefits of better management-ability, flexibility, less complexity, centralized control, decoupled control and data planes etc. Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is also getting more popular due to huge advancement in Mobile communication devices. Combining SDN and NDN in MANET will resolve lots of problems (i.e. forwarding, mobility, management etc.) which are difficult to tackle with single architecture. Broadcast Storm is always a challenging issue in Ad Hoc networks like MANET. In this paper, we proposed a Controller based Selective Forwarding (CSF) scheme by merging SDN, NDN and MANET to overcome the Broadcast Storm Problem (BSP) and other issues caused by BSP. CSF is evaluated using different simulation parameters which shows superiority over the Native ND-MANET in reference to BSP.

Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is a communication paradigm that emphasizes content distribution. Named-Data Networking (NDN) is an instantiation of CCN, a candidate Future Internet Architecture. NDN supports human-readable content naming and router-based content caching which lends itself to efficient, secure, and scalable content distribution. Because of NDN's fundamental requirement that each content object must be signed by its producer, fragmentation has been considered incompatible with NDN since it precludes authentication of individual content fragments by routers. The alternative is to perform hop-by-hop reassembly, which incurs prohibitive delays. In this paper, we show that secure and efficient content fragmentation is both possible and even advantageous in NDN and similar content-centric network architectures that involve signed content. We design a concrete technique that facilitates efficient and secure content fragmentation in NDN, discuss its security guarantees and assess performance. We also describe a prototype implementation and compare performance of cut-through with hop-by-hop fragmentation and reassembly.

Named Data Networking (NDN), an emerging communication model in the content centric networks, has recently presented a solid framework for the future Internet. The NDN exploits content name instead of host name (IP address) and content caching. These features make NDN particularly efficient in networks with intermittent connectivity and dynamic topologies such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Due to the structure of NDN nodes, design of forwarding strategies has a vital impact on the network performance. In this paper, we propose a new forwarding strategy: redundancy elimination forwarding (REF). In REF, the NDN node structure and the operation of the data structures are modified. These modifications improve network performance in terms of throughput, overhead and resource requirements. REF strategy is simulated in different scenarios based on ndnSIM and the results demonstrate that it provides robust performance for various environments.

Named data networking (NDN) has been considered as a promising networking architecture for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). However, interest forwarding in NDN suffers severe issues in vehicular environment. Broadcast storms result in much packet loss and huge transmission overhead. Also, link disconnection caused by highly dynamic topology leads to low packet delivery ratio and extreme long delay in data retrieval. Thus, an efficient NDN forwarding strategy to retrieve data is urgently required. In this paper, we propose the density-aware delay-tolerant (DADT) interest forwarding strategy to retrieve traffic data in vehicular NDN. DADT specifically addresses data retrieval during network disruptions using delay tolerant networking (DTN). It makes retransmission decisions based on directional network density. Also, DADT mitigates broadcast storms by using a rebroadcast deferring timer. We compared DADT against other strategies through simulation and the results show that it can achieve a higher satisfaction ratio while maintaining low transmission overhead.

Named Data Networking (NDN) proposes a contentcentric rather than a host-centric approach to data retrieval. Data packets with unique and immutable names are retrieved from a content store (CS) using Interest packets. The current NDN architecture relies on forwarding strategies that are dependent upon on-path caching and is therefore inefficient. This approach reduces data transfer efficiency by ignoring the cached content available on the adjacent off-path routers in the network. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed multipath (D-MP) forwarding strategy and enhancements to the NDN Interest forwarding pipeline. Furthermore, we develop a centralized SDNenabled control for the multipath forwarding strategy (S-MP) that distributes Interests efficiently by using the global knowledge of the NDN network states. We perform extensive evaluations of our proposed methods on an at-scale WAN testbed spanning six geographically separated sites. Our solutions outperform the existing NDN forwarding strategies by a significant margin. We show that the D-MP strategy results in performance gains ranging between 10.4x to 12.5x over the default NDN implementation without in-network caching, and gains of 12.2x to 18.4x with in-network caching. In addition, for the S-MP case, we demonstrate a performance improvement of 10.6x to 12.6x, and 12.9x to 18.5x, for with- and without in-network caching respectively.

ABSTRACTSoftware‐defined networking (SDN), a cornerstone of future‐generation networks, is adopted in Named Data Networks (NDN) for large‐scale deployment. The forwarding strategies proposed for SDN‐based NDN primarily use the centralized controller to optimize Interest forwarding and Data delivery. The nodes direct the Interests to the controller to discover the content source(s) and suppress the suboptimal responses. To support such content discovery and delivery, the controller experiences frequent path calculation and trades excessive control messages to install the paths in the nodes due to rapid cache admission and replacement. Besides, the typical NDN forwarding solutions are not viable to realize or need considerable modifications in SDN‐based NDN. To that end, the proposed strategy optimizes Interest forwarding and Data delivery using a Single‐State Q‐learning‐based technique, namely, SDN‐Q. In SDN‐Q, each content source learns to suppress the suboptimal responses, with the learning task offloaded to the controller. The controller communicates the learning decision to the nodes. Each node only retains the action (decision) to entertain an incoming Interest. Once an Interest hits, the source either replies with the Data or remains silent and sends the Interest's information (meta‐data) to the controller for the learning task. Thus, SDN‐Q enables the NDN nodes to remain light‐loaded. Each node can instantly answer an Interest request without redirecting it to the controller. Additionally, we optimize Interest forwarding using a hop‐based scoped‐flooding approach. The proof‐of‐concept implementation in software (simulation) reveals that the proposed system outperforms the competing strategies by reducing the traffic load, latency, and control messages in SDN‐based NDN (at most by 40%, 7%, and four (4) times respectively), without negotiating packet delivery ratio.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a recently designed Internet architecture that benefits data names instead of locations and creates essential changes in the abstraction of network services from "delivering packets to specific destinations” to "retrieving data with special names" makes. This fundamental change creates new opportunities and intellectual challenges in all areas, especially network routing and communication, communication security, and privacy. The focus of this dissertation is on the forwarding aircraft feature introduced by NDN. Communication in NDN is done by exchanging interest and data packets. Consumers send interest packets to request data, routers send them based on the data prefix name, and manufacturers respond with data packets exactly how interest is received. During this process, routers maintain information about the status of suspended interests. As regards NDN is still in its early stage, none of these strong efficiency features have done systematically designed, measured, or tracked in data retrieval and multi-path detection. This paper tries to improve transport performance by combining label switching with adaptive transport methods. For this purpose, in addition to RTT, another timer called T is used, an RTT factor for interface rating. And uses the BDP to choose the best interface to respond to interest. During this process, response time, throughput, and data recovery time are improved by 12%, 10%, and 5%, respectively.

The proposed Internet paradigm The Flying Ad Hoc Network (FANET), Named Data Network (NDN), and Software Defined Network (SDN) have attracted the interest of the scientific community. The TCP/IP protocol is the present Internet standard, while NDN is the future internet architecture that builds on it. Data availability is improved via NDN, which substitutes named data for the nodes' addresses. SDN is a good option for communicating effectively, utilizing resources effectively, and supporting developing technologies. The SDN has attracted interest because of its high-level programmability and flexibility. Numerous applications in the military, business, and civil sectors make extensive use of FANE T. The broadcast characteristic of NDN causes an issue known as a broadcast storm in dense FANET environments. The issue is caused by duplicate packets, which raises the overall amount of traffic and retransmissions. FANET has a problem with the timely and quick transmission of essential packets. In this paper, we suggested a new scheme named "Novel Adaptive Broadcast Storm Avoidance (NABA)" for SDN and NDN-enabled FANET, which uses a controller to lessen the broadcast issue. Our scheme made use of the SDN controller's effective flow management to regulate the broadcast storm and facilitate packet transfers. Additionally, we divided up the packet into categories based on priority. The priority of the packet is determined by the naming criterion. In terms of the overall number of Interests and content retrieval time, the findings show that NAB A performs better than native NDN floods.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is an implementation of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) that has emerged as a promising candidate for the Future Internet Architecture (FIA). In contrast to traditional networking protocols, NDN’s focus is on content, rather than the source of the content. NDN enables name-based routing and location-independent data retrieval, which gives NDN the ability to support the highly dynamic nature of mobile networks. Among other important features, NDN integrates security mechanisms and prioritizes protecting content over communication channels through cryptographic signatures. However, the data verification process that NDN employs may cause significant delays, especially in mobile networks and vehicular networks. This aspect makes it unsuitable for time-critical and sensitive applications such as the sharing of safety messages. Therefore, in this work, we propose NDN-BDA, a blockchain-based decentralized mechanism that provides a faster and more efficient data authenticity mechanism for NDN-based vehicular networks.

Detecting interest flooding attacks in NDN: A probability-based event-driven approach
