[Summary of the book containing this chapter:] The Handbook of Interior Architecture and Design offers a compelling collection of original essays that seek to examine the shifting role of interior architecture and interior design, and their importance and meaning within the contemporary world. Interior architecture and interior design are disciplines that span a complexity of ideas, ranging from human behaviour and anthropology to history and the technology of the future. Approaches to designing the interior are in a constant state of flux, reflecting and adapting to the changing systems of history, culture and politics. It is this process that allows interior design to be used as evidence for identifying patterns of consumption, gender, identity and social issues. The Handbook of Interior Architecture and Design provides a pioneering overview of the ideas and arrangements within the two disciplines that make them such important platforms from which to study the way humans interact with the space around them. Covering a wide range of thought and research, the book enables the reader to investigate fully the changing face of interior architecture and interior design, while offering questions about their future trajectory.

The purpose of this research is to reveal the publishing practices in the field of interior architecture, which progress through different types of publication sources, and the conceptual trends of the prominent publishing platforms in the field of interior architecture and design, according to bibliometric data. Within the scope of the research, interior architecture and interior design source titles were listed in the Scopus database between 2000 and 2025, and data was collected between 25 August and 10 September 2025 (Scopus, 2025). Also, R Studio-Bibliometrix-Biblioshiny software was used for data analysis and visualization of scientific maps (Bibliometrix, 2025). Research Design: The study is descriptive and exploratory in nature and aims to reveal the current state of interior architecture and interior design literature and explore future trends. Bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review were adopted as the primary research strategies. Data Collection and Source Selection: Databases: Academic publications that form the basis of the study will be obtained from the following international and national indexes: Scopus database. Main Keywords: "Interior design," "Interior architecture," "Interior space," "Spatial design," and "Interior decoration." Language: English publications will be included. Time Period: 2020-2025 (the last quarter century of the academic history of the discipline). Publication Type: Articles published in refereed academic journals and conference proceedings. Data Downloading: Full texts of publications that meet the determined criteria will be downloaded with their citation information (authors, publication year, keywords, abstract, number of citations, etc.) and combined in a database. Data Analysis and Visualization: The collected raw data will be processed and interpreted using the following bibliometric analysis techniques. Software such as Bibliometrix (R Package) was used for the analyses. Performance Analyses: Production Analysis: Determining the number of publications by year and the most active authors, institutions, and countries.

Despite the remarkable success achieved during his lifetime, the Belgian self–made designer and interior architect Jules Wabbes (1919–1974) is still poorly represented whether in museum collections or in interior design history. However, he is now being acknowledged as a multi–talented creator and for his particular vision of interior design and space. Wabbes believed design is a construction of meaning for life, advocating responsible design. The intention of this paper is to: (1) interpret to what extent Wabbes’ interiors were based on a personal conception of interiors as total works of art and (2) to reflect on his high–quality furniture as contributing to interior concepts. On the basis of the available writings and mainly on his body of work, our goal is to portray his practice as interior designer. Our research perspective stems from a concept present in all of his works, design quality, and attitudes, from which we can derive the main thesis of this paper: for Jules Wabbes, each piece of furniture or decorative object should hold value in itself in order to be integrated in an ensemble, creating an atmosphere of well–being and fruition of space, in literal and metaphoric terms. On the basis of the simplicity of forms and flawless manufacture, his work exemplifies a feeling of timeless aesthetics. Case studies include Wabbes’ own home and two public interiors: Live at School as at Home, and Drugstore Louise.

In recent years, with the continuous development of urbanisation, the proportion of interior design in public buildings has been increasing year by year. At the same time, there is a tendency in many places for the interior spaces of public buildings to be upscale and retro. This indicates that people are paying more and more attention to the spiritual aspect of their lives, in addition to the materialistic pursuit of enjoyment. The current phenomenon of overdecoration in society can lead to excessive luxury and wastefulness. In these wasteful interiors, the beauty of the building itself is lost. In addition, this type of interior design is not only expensive but also poses certain safety risks to some extent. In the modern society, public buildings are essential places for public activities. To be specific, they are closely linked to public services and social management attributes. As a result, public buildings usually play a decisive role in facilitating communication and cooperation between various persons. Thus, the construction requirements of public buildings are currently increasing and the structural shapes of buildings are becoming more complex. In addition, the level of technology and the use of public buildings are becoming increasingly demanding. As a result, it is quite important to examine how modern and emerging technologies can be applied to public building design in order to improve its effectiveness. At the same time, with the continuous and rapid development of China’s economy and the promotion of the concept of environmental protection, the greening of public buildings has become an object of concern and research. There are many different types of existing public buildings in China, and in the design process, the energy consumption of the building throughout its life cycle and its impact on the surrounding environment are not fully considered, resulting in problems such as high energy consumption and poor indoor comfort in the actual use of the building. However, the demolition and reconstruction of buildings can lead to waste of resources and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is feasible and necessary to study the application of green building technologies in the design of public buildings. This study models the effectiveness of public building interior design based on BIM technology from the perspective of integrated design as well as parametric design. This model enables the interior design of public buildings to become energy efficient, emission reducing, and environmentally sustainable. After all, the integration of architecture and interior design can reduce unnecessary decorative waste. In addition, this model can also respond to the government’s efforts to develop an ecological civilisation, creating a new way of living that is resource efficient.

Augmented Reality (AR) is developing technology for merging interactive virtual forms and shapes into the real-world environment. The AR products in interiors today require lightning and sometimes, spatial conditions, as well as access to some software and hardware elements, provided either by the viewer, or by the host of the location. The study is following some public interiors of the 21st century and investigates the methods of creating and applying of AR sets in their structures. A systematization of AR versions according to the existing relations to the public interiors is presented. The focus is on the evaluation of the use of AR products in interior design, and on the future evolution. The expected results are in the fields of architecture and interior and furniture design.

With the big data of social development, the development of my country’s construction industry has gradually transitioned from a development model that simply pursues scale and speed to a new stage that focuses on urban development and people’s needs. The traditional way of expressing buildings in two-dimensional planes can no longer meet people’s needs for integrated interior design of buildings. In this regard, the purpose of this article is to conduct innovative research on architectural interior design models in the context of big data. This article first starts from reality, combs the representative domestic and international architectural interior design planning theories, and explores architectural interior design models suitable for domestic project construction. This paper proposes an integrated model of building interior design based on big data technology. This paper aims at the expression of the three-dimensional model of the building interior, combined with BIM technology, designing the architectural spatial information model from the perspective of concept and logic. For the designed building space information model, this paper starts from the traditional plane CAD data, and conducts big data research on the simplified algorithm of CAD data. Secondly, it builds the model of the special building components of the research object, and then realizes the interior design model Construct. Experimental results show that the architectural interior design model proposed in this paper can effectively manage and analyze interior design, and people’s satisfaction with design has increased by about 25%, meeting people’s needs, and providing an important reference for architectural interior design.KeywordsBig data technologyArchitectural interior design modeBIM technologyCAD data

Most developed countries have enforced the use of “Universal Design” in any physical development of their cities, for the purpose of eliminating discrimination among the society members towards the unfortunate handicapped persons. Nevertheless, in many developing countries, the awareness and inclusion of Universal Design is still in its initial stage. Cities’ authorities have not fully enforced the requirement of providing access to people with disability in their built environment; neither in public nor private spaces. The Department of Standard Malaysia (SIRIM) had initiated the publication of Malaysian Standards as guidelines for designers; architects, city planners, landscape architects, interior designers, and others who are involved in the construction of physical development with Universal Design. The Ministry also commissioned researchers to do access audit on various public spaces in several cities, to examine whether or not the cities’ public spaces are built in compliance of the Universal Design or not. This research describes the procedures, process and findings of the access audit done in the city of Kota Kinabalu. Simulation of the access audit utilised five (5) people, each with different type of disability such as: fully impaired vision, partially impaired vision, hearing impaired, wheel-chair bound, and a crutch user. With guidance from the researchers, the disabled respondents simulated their movements at the water front area of the city stretching about one (1) kilometre in length and 200 metres wide. The access audit done in Kota Kinabalu concluded that the water front area was designed without consideration of Universal Design, and renovation of the built environment is urgently needed to comply with the Malaysian standard requirements.

Can Parafiction be used as a urban and public space investigation methodology? Considering spread art's interest in actual urban and public space issues and looking at growing consideration of many academic fields towards art methodologies as a research tool, this paper will try to find out if contemporary, social and politically engaged art genre Parafiction could be used as analytic methodology for public space and urban field. Applying Lambert-Beatty's Parafiction definition on a case study in Matera, research will attempt to describe strength and weak points of using Parafiction as a knowledge method for space analysis and participatory processes. Outcome will show good possibilities to apply this art genre as a shifting knowledge tool, but too few case studies are still evaluable in order to consider Parafiction a proved methodology. Nevertheless Parafiction potentialities confirm a usefulness of art in qualitative urban studies.

It is an indisputable fact that interaction and socialization between individuals are important for a healthy society. For this reason, it is essential to develop spaces that provide group and community interaction between all ages and all members of the society. This study is based on the assumption that the interactions of active elderly individuals aged 65 and over with individuals in public interior spaces are important in increasing their quality of life. In order to ensure this interaction, it is thought that the supportive role of public interiors should be investigated. The aim of the study is to evaluate the contribution of shopping center spaces to interaction and socialization from the eyes of active elderly individuals aged 65 and over and to determine the social interaction levels of these individuals in the shopping center. For this purpose, the study was built on social interaction, one of the spatial quality parameters. The research method consists of 2 steps: field observation on the selected shopping center and face-to-face survey. The findings obtained from the study conducted with a group of 200 people were evaluated by making descriptive analysis in the SPSS program. According to the research data, the majority of the participants are of the opinion that the areas and activities that will support social interaction are insufficient in the shopping centers where the study is conducted. In the study, it was determined that the majority of the participants used the shopping place especially for passive socialization and enduring socialization. The use of the space for fleeting sociability, however, took place in the background. It is thought that the reason for this is that the shopping center cannot offer sufficient physical conditions and activity opportunities in terms of space design.

This paper discusses the association between the morphology of tree planting in urban riverside brown field and user activities. With the growth of popularity, the revitalisation of urban public space is also promising. This research used drone photography and mapping to systematically surveys sample sites. An original observation study of user activities proceed in four sample public spaces in Sheffield. The study results found there are huge popularity and duration difference of user activities between various tree planting morphologies and typologies. The public space with lawn and rounded by mature trees attracted most users with the most activity types; the neat and silent public space is the favourite choice of lunch and reading, meanwhile it got the longest activity duration; but the space with sparse morphology and small trees are more likely be forgotten and abandoned. This finding offered a great opportunity for urban public space revitalisation in post-industrial cities.

Em um cenário cada vez mais intenso de precarização da vida urbana, a situação de rua se integra às reflexões críticas da Arquitetura e do Urbanismo para debatermos as condições nas quais determinados corpos vivenciam as cidades. Nesta pesquisa, desenvolvida como uma leitura espacializada da teoria da performatividade, de Judith Butler, a relação das pessoas que estão em situação de rua por tempo prolongado com o espaço público urbano é vista por meio de suas experiências perceptivas e corporificadas. Como fundamentação teórica, a relação do corpo com o espaço urbano é interpretada em suas dimensões material, social, cultural, política e econômica; a identidade indica o espaço público urbano como palco da reafirmação das diferenças; e a performatividade pode ser entendida como o momento em que o ambiente afeta o comportamento do indivíduo, pois trata de papéis sociais exercidos a partir de uma condição que o categoriza socialmente. Buscou-se, assim, uma abordagem transdisciplinar com o objetivo de investigar processos de subjetivação na cidade contemporânea, guiada pela temática corpo-cidade, a partir da situação de rua. Essa pesquisa tem abordagem fenomenológica, com referência principal a Merleau-Ponty, e se enquadra na categoria de pesquisas corporificadas. Foram realizadas observações e entrevistas semiestruturadas com pessoas em situação de rua na cidade de Juiz de Fora-MG e analisadas suas experiências vividas no espaço público urbano. O conceito de “performatividade urbana” foi estruturado, constatando a hipótese originária do trabalho, e é apresentado como a condensação da experiência corporificada no espaço- tempo, que se inscreve no sujeito e extrapola os limites individuais para se manifestar como prática pública do corpo. Considera-se que a articulação de um urbanismo corporificado passe pela reflexão dos processos de subjetivação dos corpos habitantes de cidades, absorvendo diferenças e interseccionalidades para proporcionar espaços públicos que possam ser usados com equidade e segurança por todos os corpos. The subject of the research is the types of decorative and applied art, the connection of decorative and applied art with the interior design of residential and public spaces. Special attention is paid to the fact that in modern interior design, the tendency to transform interior space using decorative and applied art objects is widespread, which determine the overall style of the room, despite the particular academic design style used in the project. The author examines in detail such aspects of the topic as the influence of the author's thing on the exclusivity of the project, giving a typical interior individuality by including an object of decorative and applied art made specifically for this room, or competently selected by a specialist taking into account the specifics and purpose of the room, the transformation of the project from a typical to an individual one. The author analyzed and systematized modern methods and techniques of introducing the author's art into the interior design of premises for various purposes. Based on the results of the study, a general methodology was formed and proposed for integrating things into the interior of the proposed spaces, the concept of transforming rooms using objects and techniques of decorative and applied art. The main conclusion of the research is that the author's art object of decorative and applied art, created in a certain way and integrated into the interior design, allows to form a certain concept of a thing in the interior, a philosophy or even your own unique and recognizable author's style. The novelty of the research lies in determining the current trend of integrating handmade objects into the interiors and spaces of residential and commercial premises for various purposes in order to give uniqueness, which contributes to the development of the design industry and art in general.

Interior Design in Thailand has been evolving, owing to domestic development and international interactions. The development of Thai interior design can be divided into six periods; (1) the early postwar (1945-1964), (2) the early development (1965-1975), (3) the Thai pioneer (1976-1986), (4) the globalization/Westernization (1987-1996), (5) the economic crisis (1997-2003), and (6) the Millennium (2004-present). In accordance to its socio-economic conditions, interior design in Thailand has been influenced by international interactions as well as domestic policies, as demonstrated by plenty interior designs and a fair number of professionals practicing interior design, as well as architectural styles and building types. Three components represented the interior design in each period are presented as space, function, finishing and furnishing. Interior space has been developed from separated hierarchical functions which required more area to open-and-flow style with combined function. Functions were ranging from simple (one function per space) to complex space (multiple, overlapping functions per space) and from public space for the purpose of sales to private residences for the aesthetics and comfortable lifestyles. Various finishing and furnishing were used ranging from imported luxurious brand-name design to local home-grown design, all of which are influenced by Western lifestyles, globalization, and other factors, including media and public visibility as well as social media. Interior design came to be more domesticated original and diverse owing to the digital platform and modern technologies. Hence, it is important to see how interior design in Thailand has corresponded with socio-economic conditions and international relations through professional development of interior designers.

In response to the problems of insufficient data management and low construction quality in architectural interior design, high-performance computing technology was proposed to be applied to optimize the overall effect of architectural interior design. This article proposed some solutions to the problems in interior design of buildings, and applied high-performance computing technology to building design materials, building operation data processing, etc. Furthermore, combined with multi-objective genetic algorithm, relevant experimental tests were conducted on the optimization of interior space environment design in buildings. The experimental results showed that under the algorithm proposed in this paper, the average health standard compliance of each scheme reached 92.17%, and the average emotional requirement satisfaction reached 88.42%. The average interface detail attention reaches 84.65%, and the average environmental comfort reaches 92.87%. Under the genetic algorithm, the average compliance of health standards for each scheme was 88.14%, and the average satisfaction of emotional needs was 84.17%. The average attention to interface details was 81.18%, and the average environmental comfort was 90.30%. From the above data, it can be seen that the algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve good optimization results in the design of indoor space environment in buildings.

This study presents a reflection about public spaces at the head of an incipient paradigm shift in the practice of the newest urban actors at the turn of the 20th century. These were analysed over the process of capitalist accumulation and the historical-structural brasilian development, considering the different actors that interact in the production of the cities. The research develops through a historical perspective and analyzes three activist urban groups that emerged in the city of So Paulo, observing, as a beginning, their diferent locations and the defense of the "right to the city" as an issue. They are, "A Batata Precisa de Voc", the "Imargem" and the "Arrua". This new democratic context is still valuated through practice in the field of architecture and urbanism, that appears to be a new performance space to develop new experiences in the work of these professionals, placed within the social and cultural criticism about the city.
