PUBLIC SPEAKING LEARNING ASSISTANCE TO INCREASE STUDENTS' CONFIDENCE

Public speaking or speaking in public is the most feared thing by most high school students. This fear is caused by a lack of interest in reading, lack of confidence, fear of being wrong, having bad experiences when doing public speaking and weak mentality, and excessive feelings of anxiety. Public speaking activities are not commonly done by high school/vocational high schools students, such as class presentations and group discussions. However, in delivering class presentations students do not yet have the skills to convey messages properly, because it is important for high school students to know how to speak in public to help convey messages properly, clearly, and precisely, and to prepare themselves for higher education, the environmental community and work environment. Therefore, the purpose of this PKM is to provide knowledge about the importance of public speaking, public speaking skills, improve public speaking skills, and public speaking training as a form of improving students' psychomotor skills. The methods that will be carried out in this PKM activity are seminars, practice, and students will be given modules as learning materials to improve their psychomotor skills. Community service in the form of public speaking skills training is important to be learned early on by high school / vocational students so that when presenting in front of the class they are more confident and can convey messages well as well as train themselves and prepare themselves for college and the world of work. The target of this community service activity is grade 12 students at SMK 6 Sempaja, Samarinda City, East Kalimantan. The output of this Community Service activity is published in national journals.

This community service aims to increase sales and product promotion through efforts to improve public speaking and copywriting skills for business actors. The target of this community service activity is business actors who are members and are fostered by the Integrated Business Service Center for Cooperatives and UMKM (PLUT-KUMKM) in Batu City, East Java. For this reason, the Department of Public Administration of Airlangga University will partner with the Integrated Business Service Center for Cooperatives and UMKM (PLUT KUMKM) in Batu City, East Java to hold a community service program at the location. Community service activities will provide public speaking and copywriting training for business actors who are members of the PLUT-KUMKM in Batu City. Activities will be carried out through three main stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The preparation stage involves collecting and compiling relevant political and civil literacy materials. Furthermore, the implementation stage will involve counseling, workshops, and group discussions to provide in-depth understanding to business actors. The evaluation stage will be carried out to measure the effectiveness of the program and obtain feedback from participants. This activity is expected to provide a fundamental contribution to increasing sales, promotions, marketing coverage areas and the quality of MSME products. Through this community service activity, it is hoped that business actors in the PLUT KUMKM Batu City will become more aware of how public speaking and copy writing in a business product will compete in a dynamic environment by utilizing digital technology.

public speaking is an important communication skill in conveying messages, ideas or information orally in front of an audience. FH UNIPMA collaborates with Neust Philippines. Providing socialization on public speaking with the target being students and Cendikia High School students. The activities were divided into three sessions, namely providing material, and practicing public speaking and asking questions.The problems faced by Cendikia High School students related to public speaking are: (1) Lack of ability to appear and speak in public; and (2) Lack of public speaking skills both face to face and online.The solutions offered to solve this problem are through community service activities, namely providing training/workshops to provide tips and tricks regarding: (1) How to have the ability to appear and speak in public; and (2) Skills in public speaking both face to face and online. Implementation of this community service activity consists of 3 stages, namely; (1) Preparation stage, to identify problems, apply for permits from Cendikia High School, and make preparations for implementing public speaking training; (2) Stage of implementing public speaking training; and (3) Evaluation stage, with questions and answers as well as evaluation with the participants, to find out how much the participants' knowledge, abilities and skills regarding public speaking have increased after participating in the training activities. As a result of this activity, the audience was able to overcome nervousness and improve their ability to speak in public with more confidence and structure.

As engineering leadership has evolved, the need for more effective communicators and public speaking skills for technical leaders has become more critical. For employees that are often hired for their technical expertise, it is the non-technical expertise, such as effective communication with peers, subordinates and upper management, that is critical as they move up in leadership roles within the organization. Public speaking plays a significant role throughout an individual’s career from start to finish. As an early professional, the ability to communicate ideas and objectives clearly to others plays a vital role in how you are perceived by your peers and those in leadership positions. As a result, individuals with exceptional public speaking skills are better suited to continue their career progression.Though an important skill, engineers tend to rank poorly in their communication skills. An investigation led by a professional engineering association assessed the state of engineering education and determined recommendations to improve current curriculums and improve new graduate performance. Industry supervisors were surveyed to identify potential weaknesses of recent graduates entering the workforce. Almost half indicated that recent graduates were "weak" in oral communication skills. These findings help show that public speaking abilities are essential in engineers' early career development. The aim of this research study is to explore the utility of virtual reality (VR) and soft skill development through emotional intelligence (EQ) and mindfulness instruction in the context of developing effective engineering leaders within higher education for more effective communicators within the engineering field.For VR to be effective in public speaking training it should elicit similar responses as a live presentation. Various research studies have sought to determine whether or not the stressors experienced during VR sessions were indicative of similar stress responses an individual would experience in real-world scenarios. These studies found that the stress stimuli produced in a VR environment were like those in a real-life environment indicating the utility of VR experience to improve real-life performance.EQ can be described as an intersection of interrelated emotional and social competencies, skills that influence the ability to express emotions, connect with others, and the ability to cope with stress. EQ has shown that higher performers in the workplace tend to have significantly higher EQ scores. Better EQ skills allows for individuals to better cope with stress and connect with others. It is hypothesized that improving EQ will improve the physiological response and the perception of public speaking experiences.This study utilizes an exploratory action research approach. Subjects in this study completed EQ and DISC assessments, mindfulness instruction, and participated in two VR and one live public speaking presentation. Subjects wore a Fitbit Luxe device to collect physiological data during the VR simulated and live presentations. The VR software collected data such as speech analysis and head and eye movement.The purpose of this presentation is to present the results of a pilot study that investigated the extent VR and EQ can be considered tools to improve public speaking skills and experiences for individuals in the engineering field and b) students’ perceptions about the use of VR as a method for leadership development.

This manuscript presents the outcome of community service activities for children at Holy Angel orphanage who experiences nervousness when public speaking. The team focuses on middle and high school participants who often make presentations in front of the class. In the previous community service, we discussed training regarding increasing students' self-confidence. The team complemented the idea of public communication on intrapersonal strength, namely managing nervousness with an emphasis on practice, preparation, and the ability to overcome nervousness constructively. The team believes that knowledge of managing nervousness from an early age can help children in orphanages get used to facing various kinds of audiences in the future. This service method is tests, lectures and practice which include assignments and simulations. The result of this activity is that children can overcome nervousness by means of positive self-motivation, regular breathing, good script preparation and analyzing the audience. This article describes planning, implementation, and long-term strategies of a community service project and aims to help high school students become more proficient public speakers. The first step of the preparation process was determining the needs of the students through preliminary surveys. Next, a WhatsApp group was created for coordination, and Zoom meetings were held to address the difficulties that the students were having with English public speaking. The main problems that were found were pessimism, fear of making mistakes, articulation difficulties, and lack of confidence. To solve these problems, training materials including the basic theory of public speaking, speaking techniques, real-world exercises, and self-evaluation were created. Videos and PowerPoint presentations were also included in both onsite and online training. The program's execution comprised eight sessions where students learned about different public speaking techniques, put them into practice, and got feedback. Strategies for sustainability, including ongoing teacher training, frequent workshops, the creation of accessible learning modules, the establishment of public speaking groups, and recurring evaluations, were suggested to guarantee the program's long-term impact. The project effectively increased students' self-assurance and public speaking abilities, and continued and increased training efforts.To format your abstract, use the Microsoft Word template style.

Public speaking is one of the essential skills that young people need to develop, particularly to enhance soft skills such as self-confidence and effective communication. Many students still experience fear and anxiety when speaking in public, which often leads to passive participation in classroom learning. In response to this issue, this community service activity aimed to improve students' public speaking abilities through practice-based training. The program was conducted at Tarsisius I Junior High School in Jakarta and involved 8th and 9th-grade students. The implementation method included the delivery of material through interactive presentations using PowerPoint, followed by practical public speaking exercises in front of an audience. The program was evaluated through direct observation and the distribution of questionnaires to participants. The results showed that the majority of participants found the training to be both engaging and valuable. This activity demonstrates that public speaking training can serve as a strategic effort to enhance the quality of human resources and foster personal development among students.

Abstract: Glossophobia or fear of public speaking is commonly experienced by tertiary learners during classroom presentations. This study intends to examine the speech anxiety level experienced by engineering learners and the relationship between the learners’ English language proficiency and their speech anxiety. The study will also identify the causes of public speaking anxiety among these engineering learners. The samples were 65 Engineering Diploma students who responded to McCroskey’s Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) questionnaire. The students’ English language grades at SPM level were used as the measurement of their English language proficiency. The findings showed the students’ speech anxiety is at moderate level (M= 105.9) and there was a weak negative relationship between total PRPSA scores and SPM English language grades (r = -.149, n = 65, p > 0.05). Mere thoughts of presenting a speech with undue worries of being asked questions were the causes of their speech anxiety. Therefore, it is proposed engineering learners be given ample public speaking trainings through planned programmes and engineering curriculum planners include elements of public speaking in engineering subjects. Public speaking skills will be an added value and increase engineering graduate employability in future.

This study aims to explore the opportunities and challenges faced by students in the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (ICB) Study Program as they strive to improve their English public speaking skills and to explain the strategies employed by both students and lecturers in overcoming these challenges. This study was motivated by the gap between English language learning, which previously focused on grammar and reading, and the real needs of ICB students in public speaking in the context of Islam and media. This study used a qualitative approach with a classroom-based research design involving 31 students in the study program. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis and analyzed thematically. The study findings demonstrate three main findings: (1) learning public speaking based on professional contexts opens up great opportunities to increase student participation, self-confidence, and communicative abilities, (2) main challenges include speaking anxiety, limited vocabulary, and lack of authentic exposure, and (3) effective strategies include a task-based approach, the use of digital technology, and active collaboration between lecturers and students. This finding confirms the need to develop a contextual and integrative English for specific purposes (ESP) curriculum for ICB students.

Presentation is a type of public speaking which requires special skills besides language competency. Presentation skill in English is a lesson or subject which can be found in some educational institutions in Indonesia. Besides presentation, public speaking can be in a form of speech, debate, and meeting. In public speaking, a speaker can face more than two people or even hundreds or thousands of people. While in ordinary conversation, the speakers and the listener called interlocutors are limited to only a few people. Presentation class is meant to improve the students’ performance in English public speaking. Feedback is usually given after a presentation activity is completed. In this case, the students who were trained were given feedback by the teacher. Feedback is given thoroughly on the language, content, and method of presentation. Research on feedback or assessment on oral presentation is underexplored. The present research is proof supported with empirical data which suggests that the role of feedback is important and statistically assessed as significant in making the later performance better. The main factor that determines the quality of a presentation is language skill. However, there are other aspects that are quite decisive such as the material or topic of the presentation and the presentation method.

This research is aimed to introduce one technique of performing English public speaking to non-English major students called Ultra-Short Presentation. There were a number of 34 non-English students of Faculty of Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, participated in this study, registered as the second semester in the academic year of 2022/2023. The method applied in this study was quantitative approach with true experimental design. In collecting the data, both pre and post-tests of performing public speaking virtually were used. Each student’s English public speaking performance was assessed by using scoring rubric for public speaking covering three facets; the introduction, the middle, the conclusion. This assessment consisted from ‘excellent’ to ‘very poor’ criterions. The analysis data of one-group pretest-post-test design revealed that the students performed better in the post-test than in the pre-test in which the average score they obtained in this test was 61.4, while in the post-test was 82.3. Besides, among the three parts assessment, the students reached their highest performance in the introduction section, while the lowest achievement was in the middle. These results confirmed that Ultra-Short Presentation was effective in making English public speaking of non-English major students more effective.

Public Speaking is a communication skill that must be possessed by every entrepreneur in order to be able to compete in the world of work. Of course, the importance of public speaking must be taught from an early age, so that one day they can be confident in public. The importance of imparting public speaking skills from an early age gave the idea to create community service activities with the theme of public speaking training in developing an entrepreneurial spirit. This activity aims to make students from an early age understand the importance of public speaking in the world of Entrepreneurs. It is hoped that from this activity the students at the Tahfidz Izzatul Qur'an As-adiyah Islamic boarding school will have public speaking skills that support the future in becoming entrepreneurs

Good public speaking skills convey strong and effective communication, which is critical in many professions and used in everyday life. The ability to speak publicly requires a lot of training and practice. Recent technological developments enable new approaches for public speaking training that allow users to practice in a safe and engaging environment. We explore feedback strategies for public speaking training that are based on an interactive virtual audience paradigm. We investigate three study conditions: (1) a non-interactive virtual audience (control condition), (2) direct visual feedback, and (3) nonverbal feedback from an interactive virtual audience. We perform a threefold evaluation based on self-assessment questionnaires, expert assessments, and two objectively annotated measures of eye-contact and avoidance of pause fillers. Our experiments show that the interactive virtual audience brings together the best of both worlds: increased engagement and challenge as well as improved public speaking skills as judged by experts.

However, many individuals, particularly students and youth, still struggle with managing their voice and gestures appropriately when speaking in public. This community service activity aimed to enhance participants’ understanding and skills in public speaking techniques, especially in vocal control and appropriate use of gestures. The target group of this program consisted of young people and students from a local community. The implementation method included interactive training, practical simulations, and evaluations through pre-test and post-test. The results showed improvements in participants’ self-confidence, understanding of public speaking concepts, and their ability to manage voice intonation and body language in a more structured manner. This activity had a positive impact on developing more effective communication potential in various public settings.

Public speaking is a critical skill for employees across various professional fields, especially in work environments that demand effective and representative communication. In today’s dynamic workplace, public speaking is not only essential for conveying information but also for building trust, persuading audiences, and reinforcing corporate image. However, many employees still lack access to formal opportunities for developing this skill. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the public speaking competence of employees at PT SPILL Indonesia through an interactive and practical training module. The training methods included interactive lectures, role-play simulations, group discussions, and direct speaking practice. Participants were guided to understand verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, manage anxiety, and develop structured and engaging presentations. The results indicated a significant improvement in participants’ understanding of public speaking principles, narrative construction, and confidence in public speaking. High levels of enthusiasm throughout the training reflected a strong demand for communication skill development in the workplace. This program demonstrates that a participatory and contextual training approach can serve as an effective strategy to enhance professional communication capacity within corporate environments.
