Quaternionic Complete Inner Product Spaces

In this chapter, we are going to study linear operators on finite-dimensional inner product spaces. In the last chapter, we introduced adjoints of linear maps between possibly different inner product spaces. Here we shall see how the adjoint can be used to understand linear operators on a fixed inner product space. The important operators we study here are the self-adjoint, skew-adjoint, normal, orthogonal, and unitary operators. We shall spend several sections on the existence of eigenvalues, diagonalizability, and canonical forms for these special but important linear operators. Having done that, we go back to the study of general linear maps and operators and establish the singular value and polar decompositions. We also show Schur’s theorem to the effect that complex linear operators have upper triangular matrix representations. This result does not depend on the spectral theorem. It is also possible to give a quick proof of the spectral theorem using only the material covered in Sect. 4.1. The chapter finishes with a section on quadratic forms and how they tie in with the theory of self-adjoint operators.

When describing a quantum mechanical system, it is convenient to consider state vectors that do not belong to the Hilbert space. In the first part of this paper, we survey the various formalisms have been introduced for giving a rigorous mathematical justification to this procedure: rigged Hilbert spaces (RHS), scales or lattices of Hilbert spaces (LHS), nested Hilbert spaces, partial inner product spaces. Then we present three types of applications in quantum mechanics, all of them involving spaces of analytic functions. First we present a LHS built around the Bargmann space, thus giving a natural frame for the Fock-Bargmann (or phase space) representation. Then we review the RHS approach to scattering theory (resonances, Gamow vectors, etc.). Finally, we reformulate the Weinberg-van Winter integral equation approach to scattering in the LHS language, and this allows us to prove that it is in fact a particular case of the familiar complex scaling method.

Linear algebra is considered an essential mathematical theory that has many engineering applications. While many theorem provers support linear spaces, they only consider finite dimensional spaces. In addition, available libraries only deal with real vectors, whereas complex vectors are extremely useful in many fields of engineering. In this paper, we propose a new linear space formalization which covers both finite and infinite dimensional complex vector spaces, implemented in HOL-Light. We give the definition of a linear space and prove many properties about its operations, e.g., addition and scalar multiplication. We also formalize a number of related fundamental concepts such as linearity, hermitian operation, self-adjoint, and inner product space. Using the developed linear algebra library, we were able to implement basic definitions about quantum mechanics and use them to verify a quantum beam splitter, an optical device that has many applications in quantum computing.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the application of quantum mechanics (QM) methods to describe properties related to the ADMET profile of small molecules. The application of these methods allows calculating useful descriptors and physiochemical properties contributing to ADMET prediction. Considering that QM methods are the only one that describe the electronic state of a molecules, such methods are particularly useful for studying the metabolism of drugs; furthermore, the introduction of mixed QM and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) is also increasing the understanding of drug interaction with cytochromes from a mechanistic point of view. Finally, combining the increase number of experimental data with machine learning algorithms and QM-derived descriptors allowed the creation of an end-user software capable of affecting the drug discovery process.

CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS: THE ROLE OF EVIDENCE THEORY, QUANTUM SETS, AND MODAL LOGIC

In this chapter, we turn our attention to applications of the Weierstrass elliptic and related functions in Quantum Mechanics. It is well-known that Bloch’s theorem implies that periodic potentials have in general a non-trivial band structure. However, it is not simple to find analytically solvable periodic potentials that demonstrate this behaviour. In this chapter, we focus on the n \(=\) 1 Lamé potential, which is a one-dimensional periodic potential that can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function. Its band structure can be analytically specified, using the properties of the Weierstrass functions.

In the last twenty years modulation spaces, introduced by H. G. Feichtinger in 1983, have been successfully addressed to the study of signal analysis, PDE's, pseudodifferential operators, quantum mechanics, by hundreds of contributions. In 2011 M. de Gosson showed that the time-frequency representation Short-time Fourier Transform (STFT), which is the tool to define modulation spaces, can be replaced by the Wigner distribution. This idea was further generalized to τ-Wigner representations in [11].In this paper time-frequency representations are viewed as images of symplectic matrices via metaplectic operators. This new perspective highlights that the protagonists of time-frequency analysis are metaplectic operators and symplectic matrices A∈Sp(2d,R). We find conditions on A for which the related symplectic time-frequency representation WA can replace the STFT and give equivalent norms for weighted modulation spaces. In particular, we study the case of covariant matrices A, i.e., their corresponding WA are members of the Cohen class.Finally, we show that symplectic time-frequency representations WA can be efficiently employed in the study of Schrödinger equations. In fact, modulation spaces and WA representations are the frame for a new definition of wave front set, providing a sharp result for propagation of micro-singularities in the case of the quadratic Hamiltonians. This new approach may have further applications in quantum mechanics and PDE's.

In certain problems in model building and Bayesian analysis, the results end up in forms connected with generalized zeta functions. This necessitates the introduction of an extended form of the generalized zeta function. Such an extended form of the zeta function is introduced in this paper. In model building situations and in various types of applications in physical, biological and social sciences and engineering, a basic model taken is the Gaussian model in the univariate, multivariate and matrix-variate situations. A real scalar variable logistic model behaves like a Gaussian model but with a thicker tail. Hence, for many of industrial applications, a logistic model is preferred to a Gaussian model. When we study the properties of a logistic model in the multivariate and matrix-variate cases, in the real and complex domains, invariably the problem ends up in the extended zeta function defined in this paper. Several such extended logistic models are considered. It is also found that certain Bayesian considerations also end up in the extended zeta function introduced in this paper. Several such Bayesian models in the multivariate and matrix-variate cases in the real and complex domains are discussed. It is stated in a recent paper that “Quantum Mechanics is just the Bayesian theory generalized to the complex Hilbert space”. Hence, the models developed in this paper are expected to have applications in quantum mechanics, communication theory, physics, statistics and related areas.

We study the options for boundary conditions at the conical singularity for quantum mechanics on a two-dimensional cone with deficit angle ≦ 2π and for classical and quantum scalar fields propagating with a translationally invariant dynamics in the 1+3 dimensional spacetime around an idealized straight infinitely long, infinitesimally thin cosmic string. The key to our analysis is the observation that minus-the-Laplacian on a cone possesses a one-parameter family of selfadjoint extensions. These may be labeled by a parameterR with the dimensions of length—taking values in [0, ∞). ForR=0, the extension is positive. WhenR≠0 there is a bound state. Each of our problems has a range of possible dynamical evolutions corresponding to a range of allowedR-values. They correspond to either finite, forR=0, or logarithmically divergent, forR≠0, boundary conditions at zero radius. Non-zeroR-values are a satisfactory replacement for the (mathematically ill-defined) notion of δ-function potentials at the cone's apex. We discuss the relevance of the various idealized dynamics to quantum mechanics on a cone with a rounded-off centre and field theory around a “true” string of finite thickness. Provided one is interested in effects at sufficiently large length scales, the “true” dynamics will depend on the details of the interaction of the wave function with the cone's centre (/field with the string etc.) only through a single parameterR (its “scattering length”) and will be well-approximated by the dynamics for the corresponding idealized problem with the sameR-value. This turns out to be zero if the interaction with the centre is purely gravitational and minimally coupled, but non-zero values can be important to model nongravitational (or non-minimally coupled) interactions. Especially, we point out the relevance of non-zeroR-values to electromagnetic waves around superconducting strings. We also briefly speculate on the relevance of theR-parameter in the application of quantum mechanics on cones to 1+2 dimensional quantum gravity with massive scalars.

The aim of this paper is to investigate when a linear normed space is an inner product space. Several conditions in a linear normed space are formulated with the help of inequalities. Some of them are from the literature and others are new. We prove that these conditions are equivalent with the fact that the norm is induced by an inner product. One of the new results is the following: in an inner product space, the sum of opposite edges of a tetrahedron are the sides of an acute angled triangle. The converse of this result holds also. More precisely, this property characterizes inner product spaces. Another new result is the following: in a tetrahedron, the sum of squares of opposite edges are the lengths of a triangle. We prove also that this property characterizes inner product spaces. In addition, we give simpler proofs to some theorems already known from the publications of other authors.

Interest in the study of dichotomy for various classes of probability measures arose after the well-known Kakutani theorem [1] concerning the equivalence and singularity of product measures had appeared. The development and various generalizations of this result can be found in Feldman [2], Hajek [3], Fernique [4], Kanter [5], and Okazaki [6]. In the last paper, Okazaki proved a dichotomy theorem for H-ergodic probability measures on a locally convex Hausdorff space equipped with a cylindrical c-algebra C(E, {x~ }), where {x*},~z C E*; this theorem generalizes all earlier dichotomy results, since in every case one can find an appropriate set H with respect to which the measures are ergodic. The proof of the Okasaki theorem uses topological properties of the original space and the separability of the c-algebra C(E, {x~ }) on which the measure p is defined. In this paper we prove a dichotomy theorem for ergodic measures on linear measure spaces in the most general situation under rather weak requirements. We do not assume that the linear space is equipped with a topological structure, and the measurable space structure need not agree with the linear operations. Chapter 6 - Applications of Quantum Mechanics

In this article we consider partial abelianization of associative algebra with respect to some fixed subalgebra. This notion is a generalization of usual abelianization of an associative algebra and has some applications in Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information Theory. Using various methods, we study partial abelianization of free product of finite-dimensional algebras.

In the first (and abstract) part of this survey we prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, $S\geq \varepsilon I_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some $\varepsilon >0$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ to an abstract buckling problem operator. This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory (in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.). In the second, and principal part of this survey, we study spectral properties for $H_{K,\Omega}$, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the perturbed Laplacian $-\Delta+V$ (in short, the perturbed Krein Laplacian) defined on $C^\infty_0(\Omega)$, where $V$ is measurable, bounded and nonnegative, in a bounded open set $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ belonging to a class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, $r>1/2$.

Monte-Carlo methods is the generic term given to numerical methods that use sampling of random numbers. This text is aimed at graduate students in mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, finance, and the biosciences that are interested in using Monte-Carlo methods for the resolution of partial differential equations, transport equations, the Boltzmann equation and the parabolic equations of diffusion. It includes applied examples, particularly in mathematical finance, along with discussion of the limits of the methods and description of specific techniques used in practice for each example.
