RAAGs in Diffeos

We prove that, aside from the obvious exceptions, the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface is not abstractly commensurable with any right-angled Artin group. Our argument applies to various sub- groups of the mapping class group—the subgroups generated by powers of Dehn twists and the terms of the Johnson filtration—and additionally to the outer automorphism group of a free group and to certain linear groups. There are many analogies and interconnections between the theories of right- angled Artin groups on one hand and mapping class groups on the other hand. For instance, by the work of Crisp and Wiest (13), the work of Koberda (27), and the work of the first two authors with Mangahas (12), there is an abundance of injective homomorphisms from right-angled Artin groups to mapping class groups. Also, the last two authors proved (30) that any two elements of the pure braid group either generate a free group or a free abelian group—a property shared by all right-angled Artin groups (4, Theorem 1.2). We are thus led to ask to what extent mapping class groups are the same as right-angled Artin groups. It is straightforward to see that most mapping class groups are not isomorphic to right-angled Artin groups, for instance because right-angled Artin groups are torsion free. On the other hand, mapping class groups have finite-index sub- groups that are torsion free, and so this leaves open the possibility that mapping class groups are abstractly commensurable to right-angled Artin groups, that is, that they have isomorphic finite-index subgroups. We prove that, aside from a small number of exceptions, this is not the case. We also extend this result to several classes of groups related to mapping class groups. We start by recalling some definitions. To a finite graph , we can associate a right-angled Artin grou p: this is the group with one generator for each vertex of , and one defin ing relator for each edge, namely, the commutator of the two generators corresponding to the endpoints. Let Sg,n denote a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus g with n marked points. The mapping class group Mod(Sg,n) is the group of homotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of Sg,n preserving the set of marked points. As discussed in Koberda's paper (27, Theorem 1.5), no finite-index subgroup of Mod(Sg,n) injects into a right-angled Artin group if g ≥ 2 and (g,n) 6 (2,0); see

Consider the mapping class group Mod g,p of a surface Σ g,p of genus g with p punctures, and a finite collection {f1, . . . , fk} of mapping classes, each of which is either a Dehn twist about a simple closed curve or a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism supported on a connected subsurface. In this paper we prove that for all sufficiently large N, the mapping classes $${\{f_1^N,\ldots,f_k^N\}}$$ generate a right-angled Artin group. The right-angled Artin group which they generate can be determined from the combinatorial topology of the mapping classes themselves. When {f1, . . . , fk} are arbitrary mapping classes, we show that sufficiently large powers of these mapping classes generate a group which embeds in a right-angled Artin group in a controlled way. We establish some analogous results for real and complex hyperbolic manifolds. We also discuss the unsolvability of the isomorphism problem for finitely generated subgroups of Mod g,p , and recover the fact that the isomorphism problem for right-angled Artin groups is solvable. We thus characterize the isomorphism type of many naturally occurring subgroups of Mod g,p .

For a one-ended right-angled Artin group, we give an explicit description of its JSJ tree of cylinders over infinite cyclic subgroups in terms of its defining graph. This is then used to classify certain right-angled Artin groups up to quasi-isometry. In particular, we show that if two right-angled Artin groups are quasi-isometric, then their JSJ trees of cylinders are weakly equivalent. Although the converse to this is not generally true, we define quasi-isometry invariants known as stretch factors that can distinguish quasi-isometry classes of RAAGs with weakly equivalence JSJ trees of cylinders. We then show that for many right-angled Artin groups, being weakly equivalent and having matching stretch factors is a complete quasi-isometry invariant.

We consider the question of which right-angled Artin groups contain closed hyperbolic surface subgroups. It is known that a right-angled Artin group A(K) has such a subgroup if its defining graph K contains an n-hole (i.e. an induced cycle of length n) with n ≥ 5. We construct another eight "forbidden" graphs and show that every graph K on ≤ 8 vertices either contains one of our examples, or contains a hole of length ≥ 5, or has the property that A(K) does not contain hyperbolic closed surface subgroups. We also provide several sufficient conditions for a right-angled Artin group to contain no hyperbolic surface subgroups. We prove that for one of these "forbidden" subgraphs P2(6), the right-angled Artin group A(P2(6)) is a subgroup of a (right-angled Artin) diagram group. Thus we show that a diagram group can contain a non-free hyperbolic subgroup answering a question of Guba and Sapir. We also show that fundamental groups of non-orientable surfaces can be subgroups of diagram groups. Thus the first integral homology of a subgroup of a diagram group can have torsion (all homology groups of all diagram groups are free Abelian by a result of Guba and Sapir).

We prove that if two transvection-free right-angled Artin groups are measure equivalent, then they have isomorphic extension graphs. As a consequence, two right-angled Artin groups with finite outer automorphism groups are measure equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic. This matches the quasi-isometry classification. However, in contrast with the quasi-isometry question, we observe that no right-angled Artin group is superrigid for measure equivalence in the strongest possible sense, for two reasons. First, a right-angled Artin group G is always measure equivalent to any graph product of infinite countable amenable groups over the same defining graph. Second, when G is nonabelian, the automorphism group of the universal cover of the Salvetti complex of G always contains infinitely generated (non-uniform) lattices.

We provide an explicit construction that allows one to easily decompose a graph braid group as a graph of groups. This allows us to compute the braid groups of a wide range of graphs, as well as providing two general criteria for a graph braid group to split as a nontrivial free product, answering two questions of Genevois. We also use this to distinguish certain right-angled Artin groups and graph braid groups. Additionally, we provide an explicit example of a graph braid group that is relatively hyperbolic, but is not hyperbolic relative to braid groups of proper subgraphs. This answers another question of Genevois in the negative.

We prove that every RAAG (Right Angled Artin Group) embeds in the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of every symplectic manifold.

We define an operation on finite graphs, called co-contraction. By showing that co-contraction of a graph induces an injective map between right-angled Artin groups, we exhibit a family of graphs, without any induced cycle of length at least 5, such that the right-angled Artin groups on those graphs contain hyperbolic surface groups. This gives the negative answer to a question raised by Gordon, Long and Reid.

Right-angled Artin groups and their subgroups are of great interest because of their geometric, combinatorial and algorithmic properties. It is convenient to define these groups using finite simplicial graphs. The isomorphism type of the group is uniquely determined by the graph. Moreover, many structural properties of right-angled Artin groups can be expressed in terms of their defining graph. In this paper, we address the question of understanding the structure of a class of subgroups of right-angled Artin groups in terms of the graph. Bestvina and Brady, in their seminal work, studied these subgroups (now called Bestvina–Brady groups or Artin kernels) from a finiteness conditions viewpoint. Unlike the right-angled Artin groups the isomorphism type of Bestvina–Brady groups is not uniquely determined by the defining graph. We prove that certain finitely presented Bestvina–Brady groups can be expressed as an iterated amalgamated product. Moreover, we show that this amalgamated product can be read off from the graph defining the ambient right-angled Artin group.

Presentations of subgroups of the braid group generated by powers of band generators

We study the algebraic structure of the outer automorphism group of a general right-angled Artin group. We show that this group is virtually torsion-free and has finite virtual cohomological dimension. This generalizes results proved earlier by the authors and Crisp for 2-dimensional right-angled Artin groups.

We prove that every subnormal subgroup of p -power index in a right-angled Artin group is conjugacy p -separable. As an application, we prove that every right-angled Artin group is conjugacy separable in the class of torsion-free nilpotent groups. As another application, we prove that the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group is virtually residually p -finite. We also prove that the Torelli group of a right-angled Artin group is residually torsion-free nilpotent, hence residually p -finite and bi-orderable.

We show that every right-angled Artin group AΓ defined by a graph Γ of finite chromatic number is poly-free with poly-free length bounded between the clique number and the chromatic number of Γ. Further, a characterization of all right-angled Artin groups of poly-free length 2 is given, namely the group AΓ has poly-free length 2 if and only if there exists an independent set of vertices D in Γ such that every cycle in Γ meets D at least twice. Finally, it is shown that AΓ is a semidirect product of two free groups of finite rank if and only if Γ is a finite tree or a finite complete bipartite graph. All of the proofs of the existence of polyfree structures are constructive.

Generalising some results about right-angled Artin groups to graph products of groups

Given an Artin system (A,S), a conjecture of Tits states that the subgroup A(2) of A generated by the squares of the generators in S is subject only to the obvious commutator relations between generators. In particular, A(2) is a right-angled Artin group. We prove this conjecture for a class of infinite type Artin groups, called locally reducible Artin groups, for which the associated Deligne complex has a CAT(0) geometry. We also prove that for any special subgroup AT of A, A(2)∩AT=(AT)(2).
