Face recognition using Weber local descriptors
This paper proposes a method for race recognition from face images using local descriptors. The proposed method uses two types of local descriptors: local binary pattern (LBP) and Weber local descriptors (WLD). First, LBP and WLD histograms are obtained separately from blocks of normalized face image. Kruskal-Wallis feature selection technique is applied to the histograms to select the significant bins for race recognition. Then the selected bins from the two histograms are concatenated block by block to produce the final feature set of the face image. Minimum city block distance is used as a classifier. The experiments are conducted using gray scale FERET images with five race groups. Experimental results show that the proposed method has superior race recognition accuracies for all the five race groups compared to LBP and WLD alone.

Weber Local Gradient Pattern (WLGP) Method for Face Recognition
Robust and discriminative feature extraction without any controlled light intensity condition is vital for a real-time face recognition system. The Weber Local Descriptor (WLD) is an effective and robust face representation algorithm. However, WLD actually exploits the contrast information, which can still be sensitive to illumination changes. To overcome this problem, in this article, we take gradients into account and propose a novel operator, called Weber Local Gradient Descriptor (WLGD).This method produces the fusion characteristic and describes the facial texture through the computation of horizontal and diagonal gradients respectively. Experimental results on the ORL face database and infrared face database demonstrate that the proposed WLGD algorithm outperforms some state-of-art methods.

The most expressive manner which human can reveal his emotional states is facial expression. Automatic facial expression recognition is an emerging field of study having extensive applications among which the human-computer interaction (HCI) has received lots of attentions in recent years. The features extracted from facial images, in order to recognize facial expressions, play an essential role in effectiveness of the facial image descriptors. Local binary pattern (LBP) texture descriptors have been known as simple, yet efficient descriptors which are noticeably used for extracting facial patterns from images. Recently, a generalized form of local binary pattern has been introduced which can offer a more precise image description than simple LBP descriptors. Consequently, it would be expected that taking the advantage of using these new LBP texture descriptors will produce more promising results in comparison with use of simple local binary pattern descriptors. In this paper, a novel method has been proposed for image feature extraction using these new image texture descriptors (generalized LBP); then, the obtained results have been compared to the results produced when applying simple LBP descriptors. Furthermore, K-NN and SVM have been used as classifiers in the proposed approach. Finally, a comparison between the proposed method and the existing local binary pattern algorithms for facial expression recognition concludes the superiority of the proposed algorithm over its existing counterparts.

Combining multiple human trait features is a proven and effective strategy for biometric-based personal identification. In this study, the authors investigate the fusion of two biometric modalities, i.e. ear and palmprint, at feature-level. Ear and palmprint patterns are characterised by a rich and stable structure, which provides a large amount of information to discriminate individuals. Local texture descriptors, namely local binary patterns, weber local descriptor, and binarised statistical image features, were used to extract the discriminant features for robust human identification. The authors’ extensive experimental analysis based on the benchmark IIT Delhi-2 ear and IIT Delhi palmprint databases confirmed that the proposed multimodal biometric system is able to increase recognition rates compared with that produced by single-modal biometrics, attaining a recognition rate of 100%.

Recognition of emotions based on facial expressions has received increasing attention from the scientific community over the last years. Several fields of applications can benefit from facial emotion recognition, such as behavior prediction, interpersonal relations, human-computer interactions, recommendation systems. In this work, we develop and analyze an emotion recognition framework based on facial expressions robust to occlusions through the Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). Initially, the occluded facial expressions are reconstructed following an extension approach of Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA). Then, WLD features are extracted from the facial expression representation, as well as Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The feature vector space is reduced using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Finally, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers are used to recognize the expressions. Experimental results on three public datasets demonstrated that the WLD representation achieved competitive accuracy rates for occluded and non-occluded facial expressions compared to other approaches available in the literature.

ECG beat type analysis is important in the detection of various heart diseases. The ECG beats give useful information about the status of the monitored heart condition. Up to now, various artificial intelligence-based methods have been proposed for ECG based heart failure detection. These methods were generally based on either time or frequency domain signal processing routines. In this study, we propose a different approach for ECG beat classification. The proposed approach is based on image processing. Thus, the initial step of the proposed work is converting the ECG beat signals to the ECG beat images. To do that, the ECG beat snapshots are initially saved as ECG beat images and then local feature descriptors are considered for feature extraction from ECG beat images. Eight local feature descriptors namely Local Binary Patterns, Frequency Decoded LBP, Quaternionic Local Ranking Binary Pattern, Binary Gabor Pattern, Local Phase Quantization, Binarized Statistical Image Features, CENsus TRansform hISTogram and Pyramid Histogram of Oriented Gradients are considered for feature extraction. The Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier is used in the classification stage of the study. Linear, Quadratic, Cubic and Gaussian kernel functions are used in the SVM classifier. Five types of ECG beats from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia dataset are considered in experiments and the classification accuracy is used for performance measure. To construct a balanced training and test sets, 5000 and 10,000 ECG beat samples are randomly selected and are used in experiments in tenfold cross-validation fashion. The obtained results show that the proposed method is quite efficient where the calculated accuracy score is 99.9% and the comparisons with the state-of-the-art method show that the proposed method outperforms other methods.
Read moreMulti-view gender classification based on local Gabor binary mapping pattern and support vector machines
This paper proposes a novel face representation approach, local Gabor binary mapping pattern (LGBMP), for multi-view gender classification. In this approach, a face image is first represented as a series of Gabor magnitude pictures (GMP) by applying multi-scale and multi-orientation Gabor filters. Each GMP is then encoded as a LGBP image where a uniform local binary pattern (LBP) operator is used. After that, each LGBP image is divided into non-overlapping rectangular regions, from which spatial histograms are extracted. Although an LGBP feature vector can be obtained by fitting together the regional histograms, it can not be employed in pattern classification due to its high dimension. We propose that each regional LGBP feature be mapped onto a one-dimensional subspace independently before they are concatenated as a whole feature vector. This is attractive since we reduce the feature dimension and also preserve the spatial information of LGBP image. Two ways have been proposed to map the regional LGBP feature in this paper. One is so-called LGBMP-LDA using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimensionality reduction while the other is to project the regional LGBP feature onto the class center connecting line, namely, LGBMP-CCL. As a result, despite several decades of Gabor filters, the final feature dimension is even less than that of the feature extracted by using LBP directly on gray-scale images. The classification tasks in our work are performed by support vector machines (SVM). The experimental results on the CAS-PEAL face database indicate that the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy than the others such as SVMs+Gray-scale pixel, SVMs+Gabor and SVMs+LBP approach, more particularly, it has the lowest dimension of feature vector.
Read moreFusion of LBP and SWLD using spatio-spectral information for hyperspectral face recognition
Hyperspectral imaging, recording intrinsic spectral information of the skin cross different spectral bands, become an important issue for robust face recognition. However, the main challenges for hyperspectral face recognition are high data dimensionality, low signal to noise ratio and inter band misalignment. In this paper, hyperspectral face recognition based on LBP (Local binary pattern) and SWLD (Simplified Weber local descriptor) is proposed to extract discriminative local features from spatio-spectral fusion information. Firstly, the spatio-spectral fusion strategy based on statistical information is used to attain discriminative features of hyperspectral face images. Secondly, LBP is applied to extract the orientation of the fusion face edges. Thirdly, SWLD is proposed to encode the intensity information in hyperspectral images. Finally, we adopt a symmetric Kullback-Leibler distance to compute the encoded face images. The hyperspectral face recognition is tested on Hong Kong Polytechnic University Hyperspectral Face database (PolyUHSFD). Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher recognition rate (92.8%) than the state of the art hyperspectral face recognition algorithms.

Biometrics is the study of methods of recognizing humans based on their behavioral and physical characteristics or traits. Face recognition is one of the biometric modalities that received a great amount of attention from many researchers during the past few decades because of its potential applications in a variety of security domains. Face recognition however is not only concerned with recognizing human faces, but also with recognizing faces of non-biological entities or avatars. Fortunately, the need for secure and affordable virtual worlds is attracting the attention of many researchers who seek to find fast, automatic and reliable ways to identify virtual worlds’ avatars. In this work, I propose new techniques for recognizing avatar faces, which also can be applied to recognize human faces. Proposed methods are based mainly on a well-known and efficient local texture descriptor, Local Binary Pattern (LBP). I am applying different versions of LBP such as: Hierarchical Multi-scale Local Binary Patterns and Adaptive Local Binary Pattern with Directional Statistical Features in the wavelet space and discuss the effect of this application on the performance of each LBP version. In addition, I use a new version of LBP called Local Difference Pattern (LDP) with other well-known descriptors and classifiers to differentiate between human and avatar face images. The original LBP achieves high recognition rate if the tested images are pure but its performance gets worse if these images are corrupted by noise. To deal with this problem I propose a new definition to the original LBP in which the LBP descriptor will not threshold all the neighborhood pixel based on the central pixel value. A weight for each pixel in the neighborhood will be computed, a new value for each pixel will be calculated and then using simple statistical operations will be used to compute the new threshold, which will change automatically, based on the pixel’s values. This threshold can be applied with the original LBP or any other version of LBP and can be extended to work with Local Ternary Pattern (LTP) or any version of LTP to produce different versions of LTP for recognizing noisy avatar and human faces images.
Read moreScene Categorization Through Combining LBP and SIFT Features Effectively
In computer vision, Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) are two widely used local descriptors. In this paper, we propose to combine them effectively for scene categorization. First, LBP and SIFT features are regularly extracted from training images for constructing a LBP feature codebook and a SIFT feature codebook. Then, a two-dimensional table is created by combining the obtained codebooks. For creating a representation for an image, LBP and SIFT features extracted from the same positions of the image are encoded together based on sparse coding by using the two-dimensional table. After processing all features in the input image, we adopt spatial max pooling to determine its representation. Obtained image representations are forwarded to a Support Vector Machine classifier for categorization. In addition, in order to improve the scene categorization performance further, we propose a method to select correlated visual words from large codebooks for constructing the two-dimensional table. Finally, for evaluating the proposed method, extensive experiments are implemented on datasets Scene Categories 8, Scene Categories 15 and MIT 67 Indoor Scene. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is effective for scene categorization.
Read moreFace Recognition and Drunk Classification Using Infrared Face Images
The aim of this study is to propose a system that is capable of recognising the identity of a person, indicating whether the person is drunk using only information extracted from thermal face images. The proposed system is divided into two stages, face recognition and classification. In the face recognition stage, test images are recognised using robust face recognition algorithms: Weber local descriptor (WLD) and local binary pattern (LBP). The classification stage uses Fisher linear discriminant to reduce the dimensionality of the features, and those features are classified using a classifier based on a Gaussian mixture model, creating a classification space for each person, extending the state-of-the-art concept of a “DrunkSpace Classifier.” The system was validated using a new drunk person database, which was specially designed for this work. The main results show that the performance of the face recognition stage was 100% with both algorithms, while the drunk identification saw a performance of 86.96%, which is a very promising result considering 46 individuals for our database in comparison with others that can be found in the literature.
Read moreGender recognition based on ensemble learning with selective features for service robotics applications
Gender recognition for interactive functions becomes essential topic in terms of service robotics applications. Ensemble learning which combines multiple classifiers prediction is now an active area of research in Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition. We propose an ensemble learning to facilitate gender classification. The features which we use are raw data (image pixels as input), Local binary pattern (LBP), Local derivative pattern (LDP), Gabor, and Weber local descriptors (WLD). We carry out comparative experimental studies of various gender recognition schemes, including Eigenfaces, any individual classifiers, Rotation Forest, and Adaboost. Specifically, not only individual classifiers but also ensemble classifiers are based on Support Vector Machine, namely using SVM as component classifier in ensemble learning. Furthermore, we evaluate the effect of image size on classification rate. In conclusion, we find that the best classification rate is achieved with Discrete Adaboost with SVM as component classifier using the aforementioned features. Another finding is that the classification rates will increase when face image size increases.
Read moreLocal Roughness Binary Pattern for Texture Classification
The texture is an essential property of an image that tells about the arrangements of pixels of different intensities in an image matrix. Researchers have used many descriptors for texture classification of the images in computer vision and image processing. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is one of the descriptors, which is computationally efficient and straightforward for texture classification. In recent years, researchers have made many enhancements to the basic LBP method to improve the quality of extracted features for an image. This paper presents a Local Roughness Binary Pattern (LRBP) descriptor for feature extraction of an image to increase LBP discriminative capability. This new descriptor extracts features from the local region of an image called a partial feature vector and concatenates these local features to obtain a feature vector of an image. This feature vector is used as input to a classifier to classify the class of an image. We tested the proposed descriptor for the images available on CUReT and KTHTIPS2b databases with Support Vector Machine (SVM) and k-nearest Neighbors (KNN) classifiers. We have presented the experimental results obtained from the analysis process regarding classification accuracy and confusion matrix. Finally, we have presented a performance comparison between the proposed method, basic LBP descriptor, and its variants. Results show that the proposed descriptor gives much better results than other descriptors on the KTHTIPS2b Database when we use the KNN classifier.KeywordsLBPLocal binary patternLRBPLocal roughness binary patternSVMSupport vector machineKNN K-nearest neighbors
Read moreMean distance local binary pattern: a novel technique for color and texture image retrieval for liver ultrasound images
A rapid growth in medical ultrasound database makes it difficult for medical practitioners to manage and search relevant data with good efficiency. Hence, a novel image retrieval technique using Mean Distance Local Binary Pattern (Mean Distance LBP) has been proposed for content-based image retrieval. The conventional local binary pattern (LBP) converts every pixel of image into a binary pattern based on their relationship with neighbourhood pixels. The proposed feature descriptor differs from local binary pattern as it transforms the mutual relationship of all neighbouring pixels in a binary pattern based on their standard deviation templates as well as Euclidean distance from the center pixel. Color feature and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix have also been used in this work. To prove the excellence of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on two different databases of natural images and face images. Further, the method is applied on real time ultrasound database for retrieval of liver images from a set of ultrasound images of various organs. The performance has been observed using well-known evaluation measures, precision and recall, and compared with some state-of-art local patterns. Comparison shows a significant improvement in the proposed method over existing methods.
Read moreDiscriminative vessel segmentation in retinal images by fusing context-aware hybrid features
Vessel segmentation is an important problem in medical image analysis and is often challenging due to large variations in vessel appearance and profiles, as well as image noises. To address these challenges, we propose a solution by combining heterogeneous context-aware features with a discriminative learning framework. Our solution is characterized by three key ingredients: First, we design a hybrid feature pool containing recently invented descriptors including the stroke width transform (SWT) and Weber's local descriptors (WLD), as well as classical local features including intensity values, Gabor responses and vesselness measurements. Second, we encode context information by sampling the hybrid features from an orientation invariant local context. Third, we treat pixel-level vessel segmentation as a discriminative classification problem, and use a random forest to fuse the rich information encoded in the hybrid context-aware features. For evaluation, the proposed method is applied to retinal vessel segmentation using three publicly available benchmark datasets. On the DRIVE and STARE datasets, our approach achieves average classification accuracies of 0.9474 and 0.9633, respectively. On the high-resolution dataset HRFID, our approach achieves average classification accuracies of 0.9647, 0.9561 and 0.9634 on three different categories, respectively. Experiments are also conducted to validate the superiority of hybrid feature fusion over each individual component.
