Reflections on Al Rubenstein

A perennial subject of discussion among members of the editorial group of this Transactions and the administrative group of our parent organization — the Engineering Management Society (EMS) of IEEE is: “Why can't we get more papers from practitioners?” For a professional technical society we have had a reasonably good mix of papers from academic researchers and practitioners in industry and government, but we would like to shift the balance even more toward the practitioner side. The problem, of course, is that people engaged in managing technical activities such as Research, Development, and Engineering (RD&E) do not have the time or the incentive to publish technical articles in professional society journals. This is also true for engineers and scientists working in technical fields for industrial companies. In general, there is little reward for the hard and sometimes frustrating work of writing (and frequently rewriting, when the reviews come in) an article of publishable quality and lasting scientific or technical value.

We continue the IEEE Engineering Management Review Technology Manager's Notebook series of tech entrepreneur profiles, the movers and shakers in technology industries. Entrepreneurship requires change agents, leaders who are innovative, proactive, and risk-takers. Entrepreneurship often requires technology and engineering insights. In these articles, we provide a look at the innovative thought processes and practices of these entrepreneurs—what got them where they are today. We also tap into their experiences in order to share lessons learned with the broader community. Many of these entrepreneurs will be attending Technology and Engineering Management Society events over the next couple years. Take the opportunity to meet them as you can, especially if you are thinking about launching your own new venture. Our featured entrepreneur for this article is Ellen Christopherson.

Special interest groups for the IEEE Engineering Management Society

The Board of Governors of the IEEE Engineering Management Society has established a key program for EMS members under the umbrella of Special Interest Groups. This call is to invite EMS members and other interested professionals to participate in the activities of the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The raison d'etre of SIGs is to promote greater involvement of members in the activities of the Society, and to provide a new platform with a sharper focus for discussion on topics of interest to members through the exchange of ideas and experiences on specific themes that reflect the Fields of Interest of the Society. The objective of SIGs is to bring together groups of members with cognate interests, and to give them an opportunity to conduct a range of functions, including: Organizing focused Workshops or Symposia on specific Engineering management subjects; Arranging special sessions at EMS Conferences; Assisting with the review of EMS Conference papers, with a view to formulating and chairing special sessions; Contributing articles to the EMS Newsletter or to the EMS Web-site; and Making nominations for Society Awards, and promotion of members to higher IEEE grades.
