Abstract

Many mapping organisations are unable to revise maps as frequently as is desired by their customers. An important application of automatic interpretation of satellite imagery is map revision. A prototype system for semi-automatic map revision from satellite imagery is presented. The system’s major functions are (1) segmentation of satellite images, (2) image interpretation for identifying map features using information from the satellite images, the result of the segmentation, and the old map, and (3) manipulation of the map data before and after the image interpretation.
