Resource allocation and admission control algorithm based on non-cooperation game in wireless mesh networks

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are a promising technology to provide the wireless internet connectivity. WMNs are becoming a popular choice for wireless internet service providers to offer internet connectivity as it allows a fast, easy and inexpensive network deployment. However, security in WMNs is still in its infancy. Security and privacy has been a major concern in WMNs. WMNs are susceptible to broad variety of attacks due to its open medium, dynamic topology and lack of physical security. WMNs are more vulnerable in Network layer. Several attacks are possible in the network layer. Some of the attacks have possible solutions but there is no solution for to detect Rushing attack which leads to the Denial of Service. In this paper, the authors proposed Cross-Layer Intrusion Detection System (CLIDS) for Rushing attack. We evaluated the performance of our technique using network simulator 2. Simulation results show that CLIDS has less false positive and false negative rates than single layer intrusion detection system.

The popularity and the constant improvement of wireless technologies, such as WiFi and WiMAX, have been increasing the usage and applicability of new networking schemes, including Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). WMNs are multi-hop wireless networks made by a collection of two types of nodes, mesh routers and mesh clients. Their self-organizing, self-configuring and self-healing proprieties, in conjunction with their low maintenance and implementation costs, make them especially appealing as a solution for Internet access and social networking. The characteristics of WMNs make them more susceptible to malicious attacks than traditional wired networks, namely the scarce bandwidth, the high level of interference, the shared transmission media and the limited physical security. Secure routing and forwarding schemes are a key component to guarantee secure communications in hostile environments. There are however issues that must be considered when developing secure routing and forwarding solutions, namely the overhead introduced by such approaches and the effectiveness of the prediction schemes used. This paper discusses the main solutions for routing security in WMNs and presents a thorough evaluation, comprising a novel way to characterize the effectiveness of such approaches. The evaluation is based on CONFIDANT, a secure routing protocol based on the DSR protocol. The study performed addresses both the issues aforementioned and provides insight on the trade-offs associated with the deployment of secure routing and forwarding mechanisms.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are becoming inevitable in this world of high technology as it provides low cost access to broadband services. Moreover, the technologists are doing research to make WMN more reliable and secure. Subsequently, among wireless ad-hoc networking technologies, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is gaining high degree of importance among researchers due to its easy availability in the gadgets and low power consumption. BLE started its journey from version 4.0 and announced the latest version 5 with mesh support capability. BLE being a low power and mesh supported technology is nowadays among the hot research topics for the researchers. Many of the researchers are working on BLE mesh technology to make it more efficient and smart. Apart from other variables of efficiency, like all communication networks, mesh network security is also of a great concern. In view of the aforesaid, this paper provides a comprehensive review on several works associated to the security in WMN and BLE mesh networks and the research related to the BLE security protocols. Moreover, after the detailed research on related works, this paper has discussed the pros and cons of the present developed mesh security mechanisms. Also, at the end after extracting the curx from the present research on WMN and BLE mesh security, this research study has devised some solutions as how to mitigate the BLE mesh network security lapses.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) integrate the advantages of WLANs and mobile Ad Hoc networks, which have become the key techniques of next-generation wireless networks in the context of emergency recovery. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are multi-hop wireless networks with instant deployment, self-healing, self-organization and self-configuration features. These capabilities make WMNs a promising technology for incident and emergency communication. An incident area network (IAN) needs a reliable and lively routing path during disaster recovery and emergency response operations when infrastructure-based communications and power resources have been destroyed and no routes are available. Power aware routing plays a significant role in WMNs, in order to provide continuous efficient emergency services. The existing power aware routing algorithms used in wireless networks cannot fully fit the characteristics of WMNs, to be used for emergency recovery. This paper proposes a power aware routing algorithm (PARA) for WMNs, which selects optimal paths to send packets, mainly based on the power level of next node along the path. This algorithm was implemented and tested in a proven simulator. The analytic results show that the proposed power node-type aware routing algorithm metric can clearly improve the network performance by reducing the network overheads and maintaining a high delivery ratio with low latency.

Security of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is critical for their deployment and management. To provide the fundamental user authentication, access control and transmission confidentiality services, authentication and key agreement (AKA) is the crucial issue. In this paper, ECC- based self-certified public key cryptosystem (ECCSCPKC) is introduced for constructing WMNs security infrastructure; and its related security schemes, with a few modifications, are used for designing the AKA protocol. The proposed scheme supports an efficient authentication and key agreement between a mesh client and a mesh router, with less cost of communication and computation resources as well as system maintenance.

Nowadays there are inexpensive WiFi devices that have fostered the deployment of wireless communities. Well known routing protocols used in the Internet do not fit well to time varying characteristic of wireless networks. This has motivated an intensive research on routing protocols for wireless mesh networks. At this time there are a number of mature and stable implementations that are being deployed in production networks. In this paper we focus on the experimental evaluation of a production Wireless Mesh network being deployed in a testbed at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) and a quarter of the city of Barcelona, Spain. To our best knowledge, this is the first paper where a production community wireless network using 802.11an is analyzed.

There is a growing interest in ad hoc wireless networking internationally, due to the great cost in infrastructure and the time delay for deployment for new traditional wireless networks for a specific purpose (i.e. cellular systems). The interest arises from the possibility of delivering telecommunication services rapidly and with the reduced needs for costly generic infrastructure. Examples of such services include, among others, a convention where a large number of people are concentrated in a limited geographical area, a university campus with a great density of telecommunication users, or even a disaster area where the fixed infrastructure have been damaged. In most examples, ad hoc wireless networks may complement or replace the existing wireless telecommunications infrastructure. One flavor of ad hoc wireless networks that is of interest in this context, and is well adapted to the Lebanese market, are wireless mesh networks (WMN). We propose that the proliferation of WiFi hotspots in high-density areas of population in Lebanon forms the basis of deployment of mesh routers for a WMN. Of specific interest is to be able to use the dense infrastructure of GSM-EDGE (and in the future HSUPA) cellular networks in Lebanon to interconnect those routers in specific locations where it will be hard to deploy additional fixed and cumbersome cellular infrastructure. Locations where hotspots are already deployed (commercial centers, university campuses, business areas, etc.) or could be deployed for special events (conventions, concerts, etc.) could thus be interconnected in a hybrid wireless network, resulting in significantly increased capacity of the network for local voice and data traffic at little additional infrastructure cost. Furthermore, this could a preliminary step for direct connection between the mesh routers and not via the cellular network, into what will become a full- fledged WMN. The structure of the paper is as follows: section the author gives an introduction on ad hoc wireless networks; section II describes WMN and define the design issues of WMN; in section III, we look at a proposed scenario for deployment of WMNs in the Lebanese market and the issues of interconnection with the GSM networks. We will conclude in section IV.

The wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have become one of the popular technologies of the wireless network utilization. WMN provides reliable and scalable wireless network because of its features such as dynamic self-organizing, self-configuring, Self-managing and self-healing. Routing protocols play an essential role in finding and establishing an active route from a source to a destination in WMNs. This article focuses on the performance evaluation and comparison of some routing protocols commonly used in WMNs for VoIP application: AODV, DSR, OLSR and TORA has been investigated over client Wireless Mesh Networks based on OPNET simulation in a different network sizes and mobility. This article presents a background of some designs and solutions based on an elaborated simulation investigation. The performance comparisons are carried out with regard to the node variation in network sizing and mobility. Based on the empirical outputs, the authors suggested that to utilize a specific routing protocol in certain situations.

The wireless mesh network is an innovative and efficient wireless communication approach with immense potential to transform future wireless networks. This cutting-edge wireless technology provides a wide range of wireless services for personal, local, campus, and metropolitan environments. The wireless mesh network consists of a cluster of mobile wireless nodes that can dynamically and instantaneously create random and temporary network topologies, forming a wireless ad-hoc network. Ad hoc wireless networks are particularly advantageous due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of deployment. In order to further optimize the performance of ad-hoc networks, different routing algorithms such as Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing Algorithm (DSR) and Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV) have been thoroughly researched via simulation.

Over the past few years, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have emerged to become a ubiquitous solution for providing wireless access at lower cost, greater flexibility, higher reliability and performance compared to conventional wireless local area network (WLANs). As the demand for delay sensitive real-time applications such as VOIP and streaming media grows, mobility management is becoming a critical function of WMN. Although Mobility management schemes designed for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) and traditional fixed networks might be useful for WMNs, mobility management in WMNs is still an active research issue because of the special properties of WMNs. This chapter focuses on the mobility management in wireless mesh networks, which takes into account the unreliability of wireless mesh links and other special properties of WMNs. The chapter began by discussing the special properties of WMNs and the general concepts of mobility management, and then gives an overview of the mobility management problems in wireless mesh networks (layer 2 handoff, vertical handoff and cross layer design, etc.) with some potential solutions.

Wireless mesh network is a network implemented over a wireless local area network (LAN), and its infrastructure type is decentralized, relatively inexpensive, reliable, and resilient since the wireless routers are often static and not powered by batteries. In addition, the access points (routers) seldom change their positions in wireless mesh networks, and some wireless nodes have gateway functions to provide the connectivity to the Internet. Therefore, such networks behave almost like wired networks with infrequent topology changes and limited node failures. Due to these good properties and potential applications such as providing commercial Internet access to residents and local businesses, wireless mesh networks have drawn a lot of attention in recent years. For example, wireless mesh networks are being used as the last mile for extending the Internet connectivity for mobile nodes. In addition, some commercial deployments of multihop wireless meshes are already in the works. For instance, a number of mesh networks have been deployed in some cities of the United States, including Medford, Oregon, and cities in Minnesota [4]. Unlike traditional wired network, close-by mesh routers share certain wireless channels and the capacity of wireless mesh network will be increased tremendously when extending from a single channel model to a multiradio, multichannel, multihop model. For example, if two nodes vi and v j could communicate with each other by channel f1, and both nodes have at least one more available network interface cards, which could operate on another channel f2, if f2 is also available for both nodes, vi and v j could use both f1 and f2 to communicate simultaneously. When such cases are applied to more wireless nodes, the throughput of a wireless network will be increased tremendously.

Intrusion Detection Systems(IDSs) are widely used to detect both known attacks and unknown attacks performed by internal and external attackers in wireless networks. However, challenging issues for developing IDSs in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are 1) supporting interoperability and 2) handling volatile parameters. In addition, security standards for WMN are still in draft stage, and to protect the WMN, IDSs of similar wireless networks such as wireless sensor, Ad-Hoc, MANET can be adopted, but the best performance is not guaranteed. In this paper, we have classified the existing IDSs for wireless networks into four categories namely single layer IDS, cross-layer IDS, reputation-based IDS, reputation based cross-layer IDS, and analyzed the performance of these IDSs with core-layer attacks and detection methodology. Based on our analysis, we address the loopholes in existing IDSs and specify research directions for strengthening the existing IDSs and for developing new efficient IDSs with respect to backbone mesh and client mesh networks.

In wireless network technologies, Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is decentralized, low cast and resilient. Hybrid WMN provides minimal configuration and infrastructure to communicate with large community networks like military networks. Since military networks are well planned networks, we can address them as tactical networks. The widely spread fighting forces in military networks have to share information about strategic situations quickly and with better clarity in rapidly changing network. Due to its mobility in terrain topology, network is suffering from suitable routing protocol. Hybrid Wireless Mesh network Protocol (HWMP) is one of the promising routing protocol for such tactical networks. In this paper authors are proposing a framework of analytical model for WMN network, queuing system and delay. The suggested analytical model is also better suited for tactical networks during warefare communication. Using HWMP the analytical delay model is compared with simulation model for 50 nodes. As the simulation proceeds End-to-end delay of delay model is same as simulation model. The authors also focus on analysis of HWMP using military application, against different parameters like Packet Delivery Fraction (PDF), End-to-end delay and routing overhead. The HWMP is compared against well-known protocols of wireless network AODV and DSDV. The results show that PDR and End-to-end delay of HWMP is better than AODV and DSDV as the network size increases. The wireless mesh network is a new emerging technology that will change the world of industrial networks connectivity to more efficient and profitable. Mesh networks consist of static wireless nodes and mobile customer; have emerged as a key technology fornew generation networks. The Quality of Service (QOS) is designed to promote and support multimedia applications (audio and video), real time. However guarantee of QoS on wireless networks is a difficult problem by comparison at its deployment in a wired IP network. In this paper, we present an efficient routing protocol named as “QoS- Cluster Based Routing Protocol” (Q-CBRP) to support QoS in Wireless Mesh Network.
