Semantic-driven model of dynamic logistic services composition and optimization based on QoS

Collaborative Virtual Enterprise (CVE) is a new paradigm for industry and it imposes significant challenges on effective operation. In this paper, we formalized a top-down methodology for designing and developing service-oriented CVE with rich semantic support. This methodology facilitates automatic execution of virtual business process via service composition. The semantic notion is emphasized as semantic web services technologies (i.e. OWL-S) have become an integrated and essential part of our top-down methodology. The methodology has been applied to manufacturing sector for a virtual enterprise which has the business proposition of effective and efficient business process. To our knowledge, this is among the first attempts to use Semantic Web and Web services technologies in such a scale and sophistication.

Several e-business frameworks are developed to define standards for information sharing within and between companies. These frameworks only standardize structure of messages and aren't able to define semantics. It leads to slow and costly dynamic Business-to-Business (B2B) integration. The use of Semantic Web Service (SWS) technologies has been suggested to enable more dynamic B2B integration of heterogeneous systems and partners. We present a semantic B2B mediator based on the WSMX-a SWS execution environment, to tackle heterogeneities in B2B services. We particularly show how WSMX can be made to support the RosettaNet e-business framework and how it can add dynamics to B2B interactions by automating mediation of heterogeneous messages. We used a reasoner in interaction with WSMX for automatic consistency checking of instances in runtime. The benefits of applying SWS technologies include more flexibility in accepting heterogeneity in B2B integrations and easing back-end integrations. This allows introducing more competition into the purchasing process within e-business frameworks.

Firstly, this paper expounded that the traditional searching based on keywords has a severe deficiency on Recall and Precision because the computer can't understand what information mean efficiently. In Succession, through extending from ordinary information to Geo-spatial information, on the support of geo-ontology theory and semantic web services technology, this paper discussed the principle, methods and application of ontology-driven geo-spatial information retrieving mechanism in semantic web. In other word, How to structure the framework for running this mechanism, how to build the ontology information models and how to establish the ontology-driven services models are discussed in detail in context. A design of systems for implementing the mechanism and experiment are given at the end of the text.

A semantic web service environment for B2B and B2C auction applications within extended and virtual enterprises

We present how we add semantics to RosettaNet specifications to enable the WSMX SWS environment to automate mediation of messages. The benefits of applying SWS technologies include flexibility in accepting heterogeneity in B2B integrations.

Web services technologies are emerging as a new approach for supporting e-science and e-engineering by providing access to heterogeneous computation resources and integration of distributed scientific applications. In this paper, we propose a Web portal architecture that enables end users to access the distributed application through the Web interface and to compose new tasks by integrating a set of high level Web services provided by portal developers. The portal design demonstrates that flexibility, reusability and interoperability can be provided for both end users and portal developers by using semantic Web services technologies.

Interoperability between management systems is significantly altered by an overload of data, along with syntactic and semantic dissonance of management information. New service-oriented architectures have been proposed to facilitate the decentralization of the control and to add more flexibility in the management process. However, a little was done towards the reuse of legacy information in nowadays modeling framework. In this paper, we demonstrate how existing information definition can be reused and integrated using semantic Web technologies. Our objective is to enhance SNMP and WBEM solutions with semantic Web services technologies, thus, allowing interoperability between heterogeneous systems and truly facilitating the design, the deployment and the maintenance of network management systems.

There are a lot of services in ubiquitous computing environments. So, ubiquitous service need a service matchmaker which presents more easily and with accuracy. The coupling of webservices and semantic web technology provides the ability to automatically discover, compose and execute webservices. However, the composition of services is generally static because these services are usually described using BPEL4WS or WSFL, restricting dynamic operation because the composite service only has a sequence execution plan. This dynamic composition cannot generate a parallel execution plan for many Internet business applications. In this paper, we design an ontology based framework for dynamic webservice composition. Also, we present a semantic webservice framework using dynamic composition model. This dynamic composition model can generate a parallel execution plan. These plans are calculated using QoS model, hence the best execution plan is selected.

Semantic web technology can be applied to a wide range of application domains. Educational-offer selection is an area of the education domain, which can benefit greatly from the application of semantic web technology. The paper explores the educational-offer selection problem as an application of semantic web technology. It specifically deals with the problem of higher education admission. A semantic web-based model for educational-offer selection is presented. Further, Semantic Web Service (SWS) selection and composition models are shown to be applicable to the problem of educational-offer selection. A prototype system, implementing semantic web-based educational-offer selection, is presented.

The Web, as we know it, is a collection of human readable pages that are virtually unintelligible to computer programs. For that reason, it has been called the “eyeball” Web. While the Web emerged as a World Wide repository of digitized information, by and large, the very same information is not available for automatic computation. In recent years two parallel efforts emerged that have the potential of overcoming this paradox: the first effort is the Semantic Web which provides the tools for the explicit markup of the content of Web pages; the second effort is the development of Web Services which results in a Web where programs act as independent agents to become the producers and consumers of information and enable automation of business transactions.In this talk I will focus on research that attempts to bridge the gap between the Web as we know it, the Semantic Web and Web services. Under this approach, I propose the vision of Web services as autonomous goal-directed agents which select other agents to interact with, and flexibly negotiate their interaction model, acting at times in client server mode, or at other times in peer to peer mode. The resulting Web services, that I call Autonomous Semantic Web services, utilize ontologies and semantically annotated Web pages to automate the fulfillment of tasks and transactions with other Web agents. In particular, Autonomous Semantic Web services use the Semantic Web to support capability based discovery and interoperation at run time. A first step towards this vision is the development of formal languages and inference mechanisms for representing and reasoning with core concepts of Web services. DAML-S (the Darpa Agent Markup Language for Services) is the first attempt to define such a language. I will give a brief overview of DAML-S and its relations with the Semantic Web and Web services. In addition, I will provide concrete examples of computational models of how DAML-S can be viewed as the first step in bridging the gap between the Semantic Web and current proposed industry standards for Web services. Traditional EA concepts in the Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) domain focus on ex-post integration of application interfaces by pipelining different middleware technologies like message queuing or remote method invocations [1, 2]. Web Service enabled Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs) used in the EAI context were a step towards providing an abstraction layer for the involved interfaces by using the Web Service Description Language (WSDL). The idea of SOA enlarges by applying Semantic Web Services (SWS) technology to it. OWL-S and WSMO are two examples for concrete implementation approaches in this area [3, 4], and we will demonstrate semantic WSMO framework, and how it can solve the problems of traditional SOA.

Exploiting tourism destinations’ knowledge in an RDF-based P2P network

The Web Services technology failed to meet its promises of fully automating the communication between applications. It necessitated human intervention in the selection and invocation of the most appropriate web service. The Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) and the Web Service Modeling eXecution environment (WSMX) are two initiatives claiming to be supporting the Semantic Web Services technology, which promises the automation of the whole communication process including these two steps. The paper tested validity of the initiatives' claim by using them to develop a Semantic Web Service (SWS) for accessing the publications of the German University in Cairo (GUC). The results showed that the initiatives were able to meet the Semantic Web Services' promises and automate the selection and the invocation of the most matching Web Service.

This chapter introduces the emerging technology of Semantic Web services. It concentrates on two dominant specifications in this domain, namely OWL-S (Web ontology language for services) and WSMO (Web services modeling ontology). We briefly introduce Web services and Semantic Web, two main technologies underlying the Semantic Web services technology and then explain most of the key features of this technology together with simplified examples. We discuss three aspects of Semantic Web services: specifications for semantic descriptions of services, intelligent discovery and selection of services using semantic descriptions, and finally, building more complex services by composing existing ones. Our main goal in this chapter is not only to present an abstract view of this technology but also the introduction of the technical details of the two existing specifications.
