Spatial data management in an integrated software engineering environment

This paper reviews the key features of an environment to support domain users in spatial information system (SIS) development. It presents a full design and prototype implementation of a repository system for the storage and management of metadata, focusing on a subset of spatial data integrity constraint classes. The system is designed to support spatial system development and customization by users within the domain that the system will operate.

This research is about regional development efforts through governance with electronic-based information systems in Papua Province, namely Papua One Data Integration (PAITUA), Papua Spatial Management Information System (SIMTARU), Information System for Official Travel Orders (SPPD) Papua Provincial Government and Presence Information System and TPP. Papua Innovation One Data Integration (PAITUA) is a systematic and structured regional governance policy to produce data that is accurate, up-to-date, integrated, accountable, easy to access, can be shared between regional apparatuses, central agencies and other agencies through compliance with data standards , metadata, data interoperability and use of reference code and master data. Papua Spatial Management Information System Innovation (SIMTARU) is an open source application that is part of the Spatial-Based Information Management System (SMIS). The combination of modern cartographic technology with participatory methods in the form of data layers and permits or maps in several categories is used to monitor all activities related to spatial planning in Papua Province. Innovation of Information System for Service Travel Orders (SPPD) for the Government of Papua Province is a web-based information system that is equipped with a set of computers that can be accessed into a data communication network where the server is located at the Papua Communication and Informatics Office and can be accessed online.This study uses a qualitative approach research method. As for data collection with literature review techniques. Literature review or literature review is a systematic examination of critical scientific literature in analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing research findings, theory, and practice.Literature reviewprovide an overview of the development of a particular topic.The result of the Papua One Data Integration (PAITUA) innovation is that data and information are available that are complete, accurate, up-to-date, integrated, accountable and easily accessible and shared between Regional Work Units and Central Agencies as a basis for planning, implementing, evaluating and controlling development area. The innovation of the Papua Spatial Management Information System (SIMTARU) is the availability of a Web-GIS-based spatial information system that provides information data and produces a decision support system in implementing spatial planning. The result of the innovation of the Official Travel Order Information System (SPPD) for the Provincial Government of Papua is the availability of a Web-based Electronic Business Travel Order Information System (e-SPPD) which is equipped with a set of computers that can be accessed into a data communication network with servers at the Papua Kominfo Service and can be accessed by online. The result of the innovation of the Presence Information System and TPP is that digital attendance is available which is connected to the Additional Employee Income (TPP) application. The aim is to make TPP payments more focused and refer to employee attendance and apply discipline to entering and leaving the office on time for the state civil apparatus (ASN). The development of national, multi-purpose spatial information systems — Danish experiences in a theoretical context

We are concerned with dealing with performance requirements, such as “achieve good time performance for retrieving tax appeals,” during the development of information systems. We adapt a framework for non-functional requirements (global quality requirements) by treating (potentially conflicting or synergistic) performance requirements as goals. Our Performance Framework helps a developer to refine goals, select among competing implementation alternatives, justify implementation decisions, and evaluate the degree to which requirements are met. For manageability of development, we represent and organise knowledge about information systems and their design, implementation and performance. This paper further organises methods for dealing with performance goals, with some focus on implementation of long-term processes and integrity constraints. Through the experience of developing GIS for disaster prevention we noticed that requirements for GIS could be divided into at least 3 categories. The first type of GIS is for regional analysis and decision-making based on data integrating detailed geographical historical (temporal) information of a region to the maximum extent. This type of GIS can give solutions for federal or local government requirements. The second type of GIS is for general public use such as to use instead of a paper map. Requirement of data is mainly positions of geographic objects which are subsets of the first type of GIS data and such as service information mainly as attributes which are gathered by unspecified people and system has to be simple. The third type of GIS is for special purposed GIS such as car navigation systems of which functional requirements are almost finalized. Compactness, efficiency, and cost are important. We propose a solution which satisfies a variety of requirements of GIS by combination of non-Internet GIS and Internet/Web GIS related to realization of disaster mitigation and environment analysis. As geographic information is based on culture and way of living of each country, we believe GIS based on Asian culture has to be developed by collaborative research and development of Asian countries.

This paper describes a process-oriented approach currently employed by a DOD software maintenance organization to use an integrated software engineering environment, largely based on commercially-available tools, for enhancing quality and productivity during software maintenance. Before automated support could be provided to the organization, a complete review of existing procedures was required. The first step was an extensive modeling effort to identify the procedures and document them in detail. It was then possible to identify, and in some cases modify, those procedures that could benefit from automated support. The result of this organization-wide process analysis was then mapped into an existing commercial process enactment tool and used to automate, control, measure, and improve the software maintenance process.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

This paper intends to classify, review, and compare the existing languages for the specification of spatial integrity constraints at the conceptual level. We classify these languages into natural, visual, first-order logic, and hybrid and review their syntax and semantics. We compare these language categories based on expressiveness and pragmatics qualities. The results of this study show that controlled natural languages and natural hybrid languages with pictograms are good candidates for expressing spatial integrity constraints at the conceptual level of spatial databases. At the end, we identify new research challenges that should be addressed in this domain in order to facilitate spatial integrity constraint specification and representation.

As the special case of VGE in the fields of AEC (architecture, engineering and construction), Virtual Building Environment (VBE) has been broadly concerned. Highly complex, large-scale 3d spatial data is main bottleneck of VBE applications, so 3d spatial data organization and management certainly becomes the core technology for VBE. This paper puts forward 3d spatial data model for VBE, and the performance to implement it is very high. Inherent storage method of CAD data makes data redundant, and doesn't concern efficient visualization, which is a practical bottleneck to integrate CAD model, so An Efficient Method to Integrate CAD Model Data is put forward. Moreover, Since the 3d spatial indices based on R-tree are usually limited by their weakness of low efficiency due to the severe overlap of sibling nodes and the uneven size of nodes, a new node-choosing algorithm of R-tree are proposed.

Spatial data is generally managed by multiple organizations, and there are significant heterogeneities in these spatial data management nodes within each organization. In order to share spatial data over multiple organizations efficiently, we propose a comprehensive framework of federated spatial data grid based on super-peer network model. Concerning the high overlap of the bounding boxes in the directory of indexing information about spatial data, a spatial indexing method which extends X-tree for the framework is proposed. We introduce a dynamic maintenance mechanism to achieve excellent load balance, and an algorithm for spatial range queries is presented. Both the results of theoretic analysis and experiments show that the management of spatial data in the framework is efficient.

Since today's enterprises must constantly adapt to rapidly changing external environment, it is necessary to be able to deal with variation and changing conditions in information systems (IS) development. This may be achieved by the use of multifractal IS development methodologies. Fractal approaches to some extent have already been tested in adaptive enterprise development, adaptive manufacturing systems development, and software development. This suggests that multifractal IS development, on the one hand, is appropriate, because the information system should properly reflect the business enterprise (in this case a fractal one) and, on the other hand, it is possible, because some elements of it have already been implemented. Development of multifractal IS aims at managing relative completeness by relative simplicity that has to be discovered in different subsystems that influence the development of the information system. This, in essence, implies the need of thorough analysis an understanding of business structures and processes to discover patterns useful for the identification of fractal features. Currently, only some guidelines for development of multifractal IS are derived from reported experiences of fractal systems development and the use of fractal approaches in other domains.

The overall objective of this work is the development of a District Information System (DIS) which could be used by stakeholders for the purposes of a district day-to-day water management as well as for planning and strategic decisionmaking. The DIS was developed from a GIS-based modeling approach, which integrates a generic crop model and a hydraulic model of the transport/distribution system, using land use maps generated by Landsat TM imagery. The main sub-objectives are: (i) the development of an operational algorithm to retrieve crop evapotranspiration from remote sensing data, (ii) the development of an information system with friendly user interface for the data base, the crop module and the hydraulic module and (iii) the analysis and validation of management scenarios from model simulations predicting the respective behavior. The Lake Karla watershed is used in this study, but the overall methodology could be used as a basis for future analysis elsewhere. Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) was used to derive monthly actual evapotranspiration (ET) values from Landsat TM imagery. Meteorological data from the archives of the Institute for Research and Technology, Thessaly (I.RE.TE.TH) has also been used. The methodology was developed using high quality Landsat TM images during 2007 growing season. Monthly ET values are used as an input to CROPWAT model. Outputs of CROPWAT model are then used as input for WEAP model. The developed scenario is based on the actual situation of the surface irrigation network of the Local Administration of Land Reclamation (LALR) of Pinios for the year of 2007. The DIS is calibrated with observed data of this year and the district parameterization is conducted based on the actual operation of the network. The operation of the surface irrigation network of Pinios LALR is simulated using Technologismiki Works, while the operation of closed pipe irrigation network of Lake Karla LALR is simulated using Watercad. Four alternative scenarios have been tested with the DIS: • Reduction of channel losses • Alteration of irrigation methods • Introduction of greenhouse cultivation • Operation of the future Lake Karla network. The results of the simulation for the historical period indicate that the water pumped from Pinios LALR is not enough to serve irrigation requirements. The spatial and temporal variation of the unmet and unsatisfied water demand has been estimated. Simulation of the four alternative scenarios indicated that the alteration of irrigation methods scenario mainly increases the efficiency of the irrigation network. © 2015 Copyright SPIE.

Our research addresses the problem of managing and coordinating information resources used in information system (IS) development. In our approach, we argue that conceptual specifications of information systems are the fundamental constituents of information resources. Accordingly, the first challenge of the research is to manage and coordinate conceptual specifications used in IS development. For this reason, an System upon Information Systems (ISIS) is proposed to manage and coordinate information resources based on conceptual specifications of information systems. An ISIS is actually a typical information system, which supports other information systems in development. Correspondingly, this thesis presents a conceptual framework for building and managing the ISIS. This conceptual framework describes how to identify, modularize, manage, represent, and coordinate conceptual specifications used in IS development. In conclusion, the thesis ends with the current results, present works and remaining research issues.

Currently, the development of organizational information systems remains a complex task. Final software product quality often does not match expectations. The existence of organizational models is the first step to reduce complexity in the development of information systems. Within the life cycle of an information system, activities are still very dependent in quality, time, and costs on the human resource skills that staff them. The existence of automated mechanisms to transform client requirements into characteristics of running systems would bring added value to the resulting software product, either in product quality and time perspectives. In this proposal, the manipulation of requirements must be done using an understandable model for both software engineers and business process experts. This model should be used to automatically reshape the running organizational information system and be the basis for an automated information system generation. The usage of such mechanism can be done during a development project, but also after its implementation where standalone process experts could change the organization model, knowing that the changes, in an automated mode, would be transferred into the running system.
