In addition to flying Government payloads as secondary missions on commercial communications satellites, Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) has conducted formal studies addressing the commercial aspect of hosted secondary payloads, including a business model based on data purchase rather than space asset procurement. Demonstrating the hosted payload concept, the Internet Router in Space (IRIS) was launched in 2009 on an Intelsat communications satellite, while a European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) payload for GPS satellite augmentation is currently being integrated on an SES Astra Satellite. The paper will provide an overview of how these hosted payloads were accommodated alongside the main communications payload and integrated into the mission.
