Infinitary properties of valued and ordered vector spaces
§1. Introduction. The motivation of this work comes from two different directions: infinite abelian groups, and ordered algebraic structures. A challenging problem in both cases is that of classification. In the first case, it is known for example (cf. [KA]) that the classification of abelian torsion groups amounts to that of reducedp-groups by numerical invariants called theUlm invariants(given by Ulm in [U]). Ulm's theorem was later generalized by P. Hill to the class of totally projective groups. As to the second case, let us consider for instance the class of divisible ordered abelian groups. These may be viewed as ordered ℚ-vector spaces. Their theory being unstable, we cannot hope to classify them by numerical invariants. On the other hand, being o-minimal, the theory enjoys several good model theoretic properties (cf. [P-S]), so the search for some reasonable invariants is well motivated. The common denominator of the two cases, as well as of many others, is valuation theory. Indeed given an ordered vector space, one can consider it as a valued vector space, endowed with the natural valuation. Also, the socleG[p] of a reduced abelianp-groupG, endowed with the height functionhG, is a valued vector space over(the prime field of characteristicp) with values in the ordinals (cf. [F]).

The most fundamental locally compact abelian groups are the following: R. the additive group of real numbers; Z, the additive group of integers; and 11’, the multiplicative group of complex numbers of absolute value I. The group 1I’ is isomorphic, as a topological group, to R/Z; this is the significance of the mapping x 1-1e2(see also the discussion on the algebra F1(‘JI’) in Section 1.1).

The purpose of this paper is to give a necessary and sufficient condition in order that the S limit set of a point consists of exactly one periodic orbit which is both S-Lyapunov stable and S-asymptotically stable. The general reference for most terms used in this paper is [2]. In this paper we assume (X, T, r) is a transformation group. X will always be assumed to be a uniform space where the Hausdorff topology in X is induced by the uniformity. T will be assumed to be generative, that is, T is isomorphic to Rm X I X C where R is the additive group of real numbers, I is the additive group of integers, m and n are nonnegative integers, and C is a compact abelian group [4]. S will denote a closed replete semigroup in T. The S-limit set of yEX, Sy, is defined bySv = n te,s Cl (ytS) [1 ]. DEFINITION 1. The orbit of a point yEX is said to be uniformly S-Lyapunov stable with respect to BCX provided that for each index a of X there is an index ,3 of X such that if weEBnyt'13 for some t' E T then wt Eyt'ta for all t E S.

Implementation of asynchronous mode in a linear periodic system with the nontrivial lower left block of averaging of the coefficient matrix
A linear control system with a periodic matrix of coefficients and program control is considered. The matrix under control is constant, rectangular (the number of columns does not exceed the number of rows) and its rank is not maximum, i. e. less than the number of columns. It is assumed that the control is periodic, and the module of its frequencies, i. e. the smallest additive group of real numbers, including all Fourier exponents of this control, is contained in the frequency module of the coefficient matrix. The following task is posed: to construct such a control from an admissible set that switches the system to asynchronous mode, i. e. the system must have periodic solutions such that the intersection of the frequency moduli of the solution and the coefficient matrix is trivial. The problem posed is called the problem of synthesis of asynchronous mode. The solution to the formulated problem significantly depends on the structure of the average value of the coefficient matrix. In particular, its solution is known for systems with zero average. In addition, solvability conditions were obtained in the case when the matrix under control has zero rows, the averaging of the coefficient matrix is reduced to the form with upper left diagonal block and with zero remaining blocks. In this paper we consider a more general case with a nontrivial left lower block. Assuming an incomplete column rank of the matrix function composed from the rows of oscillation path of the coefficient matrix, we construct the control explicitly. This control switches the system to asynchronous mode.

This is a report on our work during the last few years on extending the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz theory of “geometric invariants” of groups to a theory of group actions on non-positively curved (= CAT(0)) spaces. With the exception of Theorem 8, which is proved here, and the related material in §5.3, proofs of all our theorems can be found in our papers [BG I ] (controlled connectivity and openness results), [BG II ] (the geometric invariants) and [BG III ] ( SL 2 actions on the hyperbolic plane). An earlier expository paper [BG 98] is also relevant. The geometric invariants we recall the “geometric” or “Σ-” invariants of groups developed during the 1980's by Bieri, Neumann, Strebel and Renz (abbrev. BNSR); see [BNS 87], [BR 88], [Re 88]. We set things out in a way which leads directly to generalizations which were not anticipated in the original literature. Let G be a group of type F n , n ≥ 1. Let X be a contractible G -CW complex which is either (a) free with cocompact n -skeleton, or (b) properly discontinuous and cocompact. Case (a) exists by the definition of F n ; Case (b) is often useful but can only exist when G has finite virtual cohomological dimension. Controlled connectivity Let χ : G → ℝ be a non-zero character, i.e., a homomorphism to the additive group of real numbers. Reinterpret ℝ as the group of translations, Transl, of the Euclidean line, and thus reinterpret χ as an action of G on by translations.

The Fourier transform is typically seen as closely related to the additive group of real numbers, its characters and its Haar measure. In this paper, we propose an alternative viewpoint; the Fourier transform can be uniquely characterized by an intertwining relation with dilations and by having a Gaussian as an eigenfunction. This broadens the perspective to an entire family of Fourier-like transforms that are uniquely identified by the same dilation-related property and by having Gaussian-like functions as eigenfunctions. We show that these transforms share many properties with the Fourier transform, particularly unitarity, periodicity and eigenvalues. We also establish short-time analogues of these transforms and show a reconstruction property and an orthogonality relation for the short-time transforms.

Let D be an integral domain with identity and let K denote the quotient field of D. If P is a prime ideal of D denote by $P[[X]]$ that prime ideal of $D[[X]]$ consisting of all those formal power series each of whose coefficients belongs to P. In this paper the following question is considered: When is ${(D[[X]])_{P[[X]]}}$ a valuation ring? Our main theorem states that if ${(D[[X]])_{P[[X]]}}$ is a valuation ring, then ${D_P}$ must be a rank one discrete valuation ring. Moreover, we show that if ${D_P}$ is a rank one discrete valuation ring and if $PD[[X]] = P[[X]]$, then ${(D[[X]])_{P[[X]]}}$ is a valuation ring. We also give an example to show that ${(D[[X]])_{P[[X]]}}$ need not be a valuation ring when ${D_P}$ is rank one discrete.
Read moreSolvability of the control problem of the asynchronous spectrum of linear almost periodic systems with a lower triangular representation of the averaging of coefficient matrix
A linear control system with an almost periodic matrix of coefficients and control in the form of the feedback linear in phase variables is considered. It is assumed that the feedback coefficient is almost periodic and its frequency module, i. e. the smallest additive group of real numbers, including all the Fourier exponents of this coefficient, is contained in the frequency module of the coefficient matrix. The system under consideration is studied in the case of a triangular average value of the matrix of coefficients. For the described class of systems, the control problem of the asynchronous spectrum with a target set of frequencies is solved. This task is to construct such a control from an admissible set that the system closed by this control has almost periodic solutions, a set of the Fourier exponents of which contains a predetermined subset, and the intersection of the solution frequency modules and the coefficient matrix is trivial. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of this problem are obtained.
Read moreA sufficient condition for the unsolvability of the control problem of the asynchronous spectrum of linear almost periodic systems with the diagonal averaging of the coefficient matrix
We consider a linear control system with an almost periodic matrix of the coefficients. The control has the form of feedback that is linear on the phase variables. It is assumed that the feedback coefficient is almost periodic and its frequency modulus, i. e. the smallest additive group of real numbers, including all the Fourier exponents of this coefficient, is contained in the frequency modulus of the coefficient matrix. The following problem is formulated: choose a control from an admissible set for which the system closed by this control has almost periodic solutions with the frequency spectrum (a set of Fourier exponents) containing a predetermined subset, and the intersection of the frequency modules of solution and the coefficient matrix is trivial. The problem is called as the control problem of the spectrum of irregular oscillations (asynchronous spectrum) with the target set of frequencies. At present, this problem has been studied only in a very special case, when the average value of the almost periodic coefficients matrix of the system is zero. In the case of nontrivial averaging, the question remains open. In the paper, a sufficient condition is obtained under which the control problem of the asynchronous spectrum of linear almost periodic systems with diagonal averaging of the coefficient matrix has no solution.

Special subsets of discrete groups and Arens regularity of ideals of Fourier and group algebras
Let A be a weakly sequentially complete Banach algebra containing a bounded approximate identity that is an ideal in its second dual A∗∗. We refer to such an algebra as a WeSeBai algebra. In the present paper, we examine the Arens regularity properties of closed ideals of algebras in this class and observe that, although WeSeBai algebras themselves are always strongly Arens irregular, a variety of Arens regularity properties can be found among their closed ideals. After characterizing Arens regular ideals and strongly Arens irregular ideals, we focus on the main examples of WeSeBai algebras: the convolution group algebras L1(G), G compact, and the Fourier algebras A(Γ), Γ discrete and amenable. We find examples of Arens regular ideals in L1(G) and A(Γ), reflexive and nonreflexive, and examples of strongly Arens irregular ideals that are not in the WeSeBai class. For this, we introduce a new class of Riesz sets that are not Λ(p), for any p>1, and show how to obtain them in a broad family of noncommutative groups. As a consequence of our approach, we prove that every infinite Abelian group contains a Rosenthal set that is not Λ(p), for any p>0.

We formulate U(1)bda Chern-Simons theory, which is also called BF theory, on a lattice, adapting a method proposed by Kantor and Susskind [1] for the groups R and ZN. Our method applies to any finite or infinite abelian group. We study the discrete symmetries and use the model to provide a rigorous treatment of the composite fermion theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) [2][3][4], with no ambiguities relating to intersecting Wilson/'t Hooft lines. We derive Jain's fractions, and one can also calculate corrections to the mean field solution within this framework. We also generalize the formalism to higher form gauge models in arbitrary dimension, and suggest a possible non-Abelian extension.
