The Research on Web Service based Network Management

A generic architecture for management and control of end-to-end quality of service over multiple domains

There are many driving forces which have compelled telecommunication operators and vendors to seek new solutions in telecommunications management. Increased competition has led to an increased focus on how traditional operators can do their business better through the use of integrated service and network management systems. Moreover, there is a need to integrate legacy applications and new applications, all of which could be written in different languages, perhaps running on different platforms, and almost certainly distributed over a network. CORBA has been recognised as a key technology solution. Based on the case studies performed for the ACTS project PROSPECT, this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) and CORBA regarding network and service management, and proposes a phased approach for TMN-CORBA co-existence in the telecommunications management arena based on the Management Systems Framework of the Network Management Forum. Moreover, it presents some initial ideas concerning required basic management functionality that serve as a background for the CORBA/TMN gateway functionality to be implemented within the PROSPECT trial network.

The MITRE Corporation in support of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has developed a proxy agent functionality that allows DISA's major customers to have a network management status view of the DISA's IP router-based networks. The network management proxy agent, which operates at the element management level of the router network management hierarchy, has been developed using the World Wide Web (WWW) technology. To provide this functionality, MITRE has developed a network management Web server (NMWS) software that takes information from DISA's network management system (NMS), namely Hewlett Packard's Open View (HPOV) software and publishes it on the Web. This software, which is a collection of Perl scripts that run on a dedicated NMWS host, takes X windows screens from HPOV, converts them to GDF files, and publishes them on a Web server. In addition, the NMWS software provides a non-graphical form-based interface to the HPOV database to provide a near real-time status of circuits that are identified by their IP addresses or customer circuit service descriptor (CCSDs) to DISA's customers. The NMWS software was developed and operates on Solaris 2.5 with an X11R5 distribution. Network users access the NMWS host via their Web browser and are presented with (1) a list of available views, which is the same as the views on the screen of the NMWS host at the time of the last NMWS invocation, and (2) a form, which may be used to provide access circuit status using the text file of the Open View database. They can pull down a view via the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and with most browsers this view will automatically update. This paper discusses the results of our testing and experimentation, and our lessons learned and recommendations for using a Web-based approach for network management of large networks.

The electric power transmission network management is changing from decentralized to province-centralized mode to adapt to the development trend of power grid. For the current hierarchical management situation of transmission system, the paper mainly studies the centralized mode. Considering the difficulty of transform, security, the demand of bandwidth and augmentability factors, the paper proposes a hierarchical province-centralized mode based on Resource pool and states its architecture, realization methods and deployment mode of Network Manager System in Cloud, realizing the unified management, configuration and data sharing of the whole province. Deploying the network management system in the Clout is taking full use of the resource sharing, efficient management and on-demand resource of the Cloud to realize the intensification, promoting the scheduling intensive management level of Information and transmission. Introduction For a long time, the layered, graded, zoned management mode of electric power communication networks makes the network management system built and maintained by the way of multi-level scheduling mechanism. In order to fulfill the development trend of power grid, power transmission network management should be developed from the provinces and cities separated pattern to the province-centralized mode to realize unified management, unified configuration and sharing of the communication network data within province and achieve the purpose of concentrate and highly active management, reasonable resource-configuration and optimizing the structure of the network resources. Deploying the communication network management centrally is an effective way to enhance the level of intensive management, which, whereas, will cause the load that systems deal with increase sharply. However, Cloud computing technology integrates resources into form Cloud in order to get higher utilization of computing and storage, having a strong computing power and storage capacity. With the development of Cloud construction, deploying communication network management in the pool can improve data reliability and security. This paper puts forward a hierarchical province-centralized mode based on Cloud by researching on concentrated-model of Transmission Network Management, and describes the model in detail. Discussed Problems Power system communication network is the important technology support and infrastructure platform of the grid. As an important guarantee of power grid security, stability and economic running, communication network management system is the important technology means of the communication network management and maintenance. EMS is based on the device manager and realizes the management of safety, configuration, performance and alarm for specific equipment; SNMS can divide the network elements into various subnets, not only manage the elements equipments but also the topological relation between them. NMS is a higher level than the SNMS and manage multiple SNMS systems at the same time through network. It configures the router for each business level, and also shows the network elements’ circumstances of each time slot and the business relationships at all levels in details. The relationship of different level network management system is showed as the figure 1.

Web services technologies change the software industry drastically by developing and integrating enterprise web services and applications in order to enable the users to access them. There are several research initiatives in the field of Web services for enterprise applications. However, none of the initiatives have attempted for web applications pertaining to academic institution using Web services technology. Web service composition is the combination of web services from different service providers to create a more sophisticated, value added web service to the web users. Researchers put on efforts to bring out the state-of-the art in web services technologies and security technologies for web services. The composition of web services is another promising area for research and development. A study reveals that there are number of approaches providing secure web services. However, there is no attempt made so far to secure the services at multi-level. This paper proposes a Multi-level Secured Framework (MLSF) for the students, faculty and employees of the academic institutions which provides secured composite web services such as admission service, fees payment service, library service, personalized service and so on. The MLSF enhances the security at various levels such as user level, device level, web services level and institution level.

The monitoring and management of computer and telecommunication networks becomes increasingly difficult as these networks grow in size and complexity. Moreover, several new functional requirements appear for these network management systems in the emerging field of digital multimedia networks. Therefore, the need for scalable and distributed network management systems based on open communication standards remains as relevant as ever. We investigate the use of Web services as an open communication standard for network management systems. After a concise description of Web services and their possible advantages for network management systems, we present a case study. A Web service architecture is used to build a network management system for a data broadcasting network to distribute digital movies. The presented architecture allows several additional management functionalities that are required in such digital content networks.

With the development of the computer network, and the great change in the demands of network management, any Network Management System is a process of development and perfection. Therefore, designing a rational system structure is the foundation to ensure the good scalability of the system. The main issues and characteristics of Network Management in Campus Network at present were analyzed in the thesis, and the system structure of Network Management in Campus Network were discussed, which includes data collecting layer, centralized-processing layer, network management layer, service management layer. The basic network management system framework of campus network based on Web and its deployment method were also proposed in this paper, which cover the most of the demand for network management. The framework has a good scalability, which lay the foundation for the development of Network Management System in campus network.

In service-oriented computing, applications are often created by integrating third-party Web Services. Current integration approaches, however, require client applications to hardcode references to specific Web Services, thereby affecting adaptability and robustness. Moreover, support for client-side management is rarely provided. To enable the development of more flexible and robust applications, we propose to insert a new layer between the client applications and the Web Services: the Web Services Management Layer (WSML). This layer decouples Web Services from client applications and enables hot-swapping between semantically equivalent Web Services based on availability. This mechanism allows for dynamic switching between Web Services based on selection policies that encapsulate changing business requirements. In addition, with WSML, client-side management concerns (e.g., caching, billing and logging) can be decoupled from the applications. In this paper, we identify a list of requirements for WSML to realize dynamic integration and client-side service management, and provide support for service criteria to govern the selection, integration and composition of Web Services. We also show that dynamic Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) is well suited to implement the core functionality of WSML.

The management of telecommunication and data networks has been based on standards defined in historical contexts quite different than the current times. As a consequence, traditional management technologies are not able to address important challenges posed by the modern infrastructures. Web Services technologies enable the proper communication of processes deployed on quite hostile environments such as the Internet. The use of Web Services for management allows the integration of low-level activities (e.g., retrieving monitoring information from gateways) with high-level business processes (e.g., creating a new product and its marketing strategy.) Despite clear advantages, Web Services-based management does not come for free; since Web Services are based on XML documents, its performance, compared with traditional management technologies, may represent an important drawback. This chapter covers the aspects of using Web Services for management focusing on the different interactions between managers and devices and the performance associated with it.

Web service technology (WST) is a service-oriented architecture implementation framework that makes designing component-based internet applications possible. At present, many providers offer their services as web services. Current WST suffers from the lack of an integrated tool to assist web service developers. In WST, the services are published publicly, and their descriptions are stored in service directories. These descriptions contain valuable information about the work of different software teams throughout the world. However, with the increasing number of web services, searching for services is difficult and time-consuming. Furthermore, in current service directories, there is a little knowledge about the services, and extraction of useful information to be utilised by developers is not easy. In this paper, in order to increase the knowledge of what is available in service directories, a structure is presented by interlinking WST entities by using some defined semantic relations. The proposed structure provides a framework and a tool named WSDATool to develop new web services using information from published services or to refine current published web service descriptions. In experiments, services designed with the assistance of the WSDATool are more coherent and well designed.

Several organizations are incorporating the architecture being developed by the Open Systems Interconnection/Network Management Forum into their network management products and systems. It is expected that, as this architecture develops, it will be the basis for multivendor exchange of network management data for the next five to ten years. This architecture and key concepts being developed by the Forum to allow the interoperation of several network management systems using an open interface are summarized. These apply to the full range of networks that must be managed, including computer and communication, local area, wide area international, voice (public and private), and packet data networks. The concepts covered include: Conformant Management Entity (CME), which is a management system that supports the interoperable interface defined by the Forum; managed objects, the abstract representations of the real resources to be managed; and the interoperable interface, which consists of a defined set of protocols (using the OSI seven-layer protocol stack) over which particular messages about managed objects are exchanged.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>

To develop a network management system (NMS) more easily, the authors developed an application programming interface (API) for configuring network devices. Because this API is used in a Java development environment, an NMS can be developed by utilizing the API and other commonly available Java libraries. It is thus possible to easily develop an NMS that is highly compatible with other IT systems. And operations that are generated from the API and that are exchanged between the NMS and network devices are based on NETCONF, which is standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a next-generation network-configuration protocol. Adopting a standardized technology ensures that the NMS developed by using the API can manage network devices provided from multi-vendors in a unified manner. Furthermore, the configuration items exchanged over NETCONF are specified in an object-oriented design. They are therefore easier to manage than such items in the Management Information Base (MIB), which is defined as data to be managed by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). We actually developed several NMSs by using the API. Evaluation of these NMSs showed that, in terms of configuration time and development time, the NMS developed by using the API performed as well as NMSs developed by using a command line interface (CLI) and SNMP. The NMS developed by using the API showed feasibility to achieve “autonomic network management” and “high interoperability with IT systems.”

A web service is an interface of the software component that can be accessed by standard Internet protocols. The web service technology enables an application to application communication and interoperability. The increasing number of web service providers throughout the globe have produced numerous web services providing the same or similar functionality. This necessitates the use of tools and techniques to search the suitable services available over the Web. UDDI (universal description, discovery and integration) is the first initiative to find the suitable web services based on the requester's functional demands. However, the requester's requirements may also include non-functional aspects like quality of service (QoS). In this paper, the authors define a QoS model for QoS aware and business driven web service publishing and selection. The authors propose a QoS requirement format for the requesters, to specify their complex demands on QoS for the web service selection. The authors define a tree structure called quality constraint tree (QCT) to represent the requester's variety of requirements on QoS properties having varied preferences. The paper proposes a QoS broker based architecture for web service selection, which facilitates the requesters to specify their QoS requirements to select qualitatively optimal web service. A web service selection algorithm is presented, which ranks the functionally similar web services based on the degree of satisfaction of the requester's QoS requirements and preferences. The paper defines web service provider qualities to distinguish qualitatively competitive web services. The paper also presents the modelling and selection mechanism for the requester's alternative constraints defined on the QoS. The authors implement the QoS broker based system to prove the correctness of the proposed web service selection mechanism.

Web services technology promises to enable rich, flexible and dynamic interoperation of highly distributed and heterogeneous applications using Web standards. The providers of composite Web services involving composition plan with different flow patterns need to discover and select suitable candidate Web services for each task of the composition plan at runtime. The dynamic nature of Web services prompts a need for the mechanism to enable the frequent editing of QoS offers of composite Web services by the Composite Service Providers (CSP). In this paper, the authors present a detailed survey of literature in QoS based selection for Web service compositions. The paper also presents different architectures for QoS aware Web service compositions and evaluates various QoS aware selection techniques. The authors classify QoS aware selection techniques for composition based on the nature of composition plan, complexity of QoS requirements and nature of techniques/methodology used in the selection and QoS aggregation.

Internet and Mobile technologies have greatly changed our lives in the past decade. However, the power and patentlals of the cambined capabilities offered by these two major inventions remain untapped. This paper looks into how we can turn these capabilities into service components that can be assembled into various composite services and enable people to have a simple way to enjoy camprehensive services anytime, anywhere, anyway with user and context relevance. We will explain in this paper how Web Services technologies and Service Oriented Architecture enables rapidly service creation; and the power of combining web technologies and mobile capabilities for service execution. Tourism is ane vertical industry chosen to apply this Service Provisioning concept. A packaged tour prototype is built to demonstrate the creation and execution of various tour services. These packaged tour services inciude both web and mobile service components and are described in service logic. Utilising the published services co...
