Through the Interface - a Human Activity Approach to User Interface Design

The purpose of this study is to discuss approaches for developing human–computer interaction (HCI) in educational technology (ET) based on definitions of visual design, learning variables and user-interface design principles in the field of instructional design and technology (IDT). We will do in several stages, first, we will review historical definitions of HCI and its developments in education and considerations for defining visual literacy for learning with instructional design (ID) models. Then, we will review each definition of visual principles for user interface design (UID) or user experience design (UED) and learning from screens. HCI and its roles with the perceptional approach will be discussed as previous definitions in the type of theories such as cognitive load, activity and paying particular attention to primary concepts included in each definition based on the ID model approach. We will also present some of the historical criticisms of the definitions, which provided designing and developing user interfaces. The process should indicate or address possible performance design approaches in ID steps for developing learning and teaching in learning environments as well as developing UID or UED in ET. This also indicates approaches in philosophy of ET and its theory, definition and applications of new technologies as well as UID or UED perspectives and visual design variables. In this study, we review the visual design techniques from past to present that multimedia project design teams should follow the strategies and rules for designing learning environments in industry, business and military based on philosophy of ET and HCI design with ID models by using the newest technologies. The process compares both understanding global UID or UED requirements and visual strategies and considerations for research and product design by ID models. The steps include recognising terminology in ET practice concept, psychological, technological and pedagogical foundations in ID as well as ET approaches and using visual rules for conducting multimedia projects in last decays. At the end of the study, conceptions of ET, ID models and HCI will be discussing to indicate design standards for multimedia projects in the field of IDT. We will also present the relationships between ET and designing problems for creating instructional materials in education. All steps in visual design, UID, UED and HCI design based on philosophical approaches and evaluations in the field are given at the end of the study. In this paper, a method-mix (cultural dimensions, intercultural variables, user interface characteristics and human computer interaction (HCI) dimensions) for intercultural user interface design (IUID) is presented. Based on a hybrid approach covering cultural contexts in human–computer interaction (HCI) design using a model of culturally influenced HCI, this IUID method-mix represents the main constituent of a reasonable toolbox for IUID. The IUID method-mix is exemplified by application examples to demonstrate and discuss its benefit and limitations. The examples elucidate why and how cultural aspects play a role in HCI design and usability/UX engineering. Cultural influence on HCI is described using cultural variables for user interface design. The IUID method-mix serves to inspire HCI engineers in the requirement analysis phase as well as HCI designers in the design phase. The readers are sensitized to the challenges of intercultural usability/UX engineering and intercultural HCI design and will be equipped with relevant methodological knowledge needed to actively derive design recommendations for user interface design for and in their desired cultural contexts. Practitioners can prognosticate the ensuing effort and the expenditure for considering cultural context in intercultural user interface design.

Social Media platforms are increasing user engagements with their attractive User Interfaces (UI) design playing a crucial role in maintaining user involvement. Use of Emotional Intelligence (EI) into the UI transforming user interaction and engagement pattern significantly. With an emphasis on how design decisions affect user behaviour, this study explores the nuanced function of EIUIs (Emotionally Inteligence User Interfaces) in the context of social media. It specifically draws attention to the dangers of manipulative techniques like "dark patterns"-purposeful interface strategies intended to influence users to take actions they might not have otherwise taken-as well as the possibility of constructive involvement. By investigating these practices, the paper hopes to clarify the wider ethical consequences of interface design as well as the duty of platforms and designers to promote transparency, autonomy, and confidence in digital interactions. This paper aims to contribute to the discourse on user interface design by providing a comprehensive understanding of EIUIs' potential and pitfalls in the context of social media interactions. Additionally, this study focusses on finding information of the pattern of Emotionally Intelligent User Interfaces (EIUI) design to enhance user engagements emotionally and tend to take decisions and the impact of the design pattern in user experience.

An optical brain-machine interface (O-BMI) system using calcium imaging has various advantages such as high resolution, a comprehensive view of large neural populations, abilities such as long-term stable recording, and applicability to freely behaving animals in neuroscience research. The present study developed an ergonomic user interface (UI) design, based on a use scenario for an O-BMI system that can be used for the acquisition and processing of calcium imaging in freely behaving rodents. The UI design was developed in three steps: (1) identification of design and function requirements of users, (2) establishment of a use scenario, and (3) development of a UI prototype. The UI design requirements were identified by a literature review, a benchmark of existing systems, and a focus group interview with five neuroscience researchers. Then, the use scenario was developed for tasks of data acquisition, feature extraction, and neural decoding for offline and online processing by considering the sequences of operations and needs of users. Lastly, a digital prototype incorporating an information architecture, graphic user interfaces, and simulated functions was fabricated. A usability test was conducted with five neuroscientists (work experience = 3.4 ± 1.1 years) and five ergonomic experts (work experience = 3.6 ± 2.7 years) to compare the digital prototypes with four existing systems (Miniscope, nVista, Mosaic, and Suite2p). The usability testing results showed that the ergonomic UI design was significantly preferred to the UI designs of the existing systems by reducing the task completion time by 10.1% to 70.2% on average, the scan path length by 14.4% to 88.7%, and perceived workload by 12.2% to 37.9%, increasing satisfaction by 11.3% to 74.3% in data acquisition and signal-extraction tasks. The present study demonstrates the significance of the user-centered design approach in the development of a system for neuroscience research. Further research is needed to validate the usability test results of the UI prototype as a corresponding real system is implemented.

To attract more users and promote purchase habits, social e-commerce platforms constantly propose new interaction techniques and marketing strategies. "Xiaohongshu" immediately became famous due to its popular "grass-planting" function. The platform established the "Sales through note-sharing" approach to interrupt the cycle of "planting without uprooting." The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing online purchase intention of the "Xiaohongshu" Sales through note-sharing model from a human-computer interaction standpoint, as well as the relationships between these factors. To do this, we expanded on the TAM model by including five variables: social identity, social comparison, and knowledge sharing Willingness, interface design, and purchase intention form 12 hypotheses. We gathered 287 valid replies from "Xiaohongshu" users and tested them with SPSS and AMOS. According to the study findings, interface design has a greater impact on purchase intention than knowledge-sharing willingness and behavioral intention to use. Interface design significantly influences knowledge sharing Willingness and social identity significantly influence social comparison, which in turn significantly affects interface design. These results underscore the crucial role of interaction factors, particularly interface design, in purchase intention and the Sales through note-sharing model. This suggests that "Xiaohongshu" can enhance the Sales through note-sharing model by improving interface design to further enhance users' purchase intention and solidify the "grass-planting and uprooting" loop. In theoretical terms, this study extends the TAM model by integrating social factors (social identity, social comparison, knowledge sharing willingness) and interaction factors (interface design), enriching research in the fields of online purchasing and human-computer interaction on social e-commerce platforms. It also provides relevant insights for stakeholders.

The design of mobile device interfaces is an area that has started to be addressed in the human computer interaction (HCI) community during the past few years. While previous work on handheld interface design has focused on overall usability aspects, security related design issues have only been minimally addressed. An example of a security interface is an authentication interface as used by electronic commerce (e-commerce) web sites. The paper opens with a review of prior research on secure interface design. Results of a usability evaluation targeting authentication interfaces as accessed on mobile devices is presented. To illustrate design aspects of an authentication interface, a discussion of the eBay authentication interface is then discussed. Recommended guidelines are proposed for designing authentication interfaces as accessed via mobile devices.

Cross-use pattern language: cross-cultural user interface development tool

In today’s automotive industry there is an increasing demand for VR technology, because it provides the possibility to switch from cost and time intensiv physical mock up’s (PMU) to digital mock up’s (DMU). Furthermore the visualization and examination of simulation results is a very important aspect during the whole development cycle. Therefore tools are needed, which enable the users to work with DMU’s, as well as simulation data sets in an efficient and intuitive way. In this paper we present the design of a VR user interface for evaluating simulation data sets. The design of the user interface is based on the basic interaction tasks (BIT’s), introduced by Foley et. al.. This allows to generalize the results presented herein and to apply them to other domains.KeywordsData ProbeInput DeviceMenu ItemDesign ReviewColor FigureThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. In multi-user collaborative interaction systems, the interface serves not only as a medium for human-computer interaction but also as a crucial channel for communication between users. Consequently, the quality of collaborative interface design directly impacts the overall effectiveness of the system. In collaborative systems, different users typically assume distinct roles, and task flows are typically more complex. Compared to single-user interfaces, multi-user collaborative interfaces must account for a broader range of collaboration requirements and characteristics. Although a substantial body of theoretical and practical research on user interface design exists, design methods specifically for multi-user collaborative interaction interfaces are still lacking. Therefore, this study builds on the existing theories and case studies of collaborative systems, extending user-centered design methods. The study emphasizes the analysis of task flows and role relationships in multi-user collaboration and integrates collaboration needs and characteristics throughout every stage of the interface design process. Ultimately, we propose a methodological framework for interface design tailored to multi-user collaborative interaction systems, aiming to provide theoretical support for the development of more advanced and comprehensive collaborative systems.

Design Patterns (DPs) are acknowledged as powerful conceptual tools to improve design quality and to reduce time and cost of the development process by effect of the reuse of "good" design solutions. In many fields (e.g., software engineering, web engineering, interface design) patterns are widely used by practitioners and are also investigated from a research perspective. Still, they have been seldom explored in the arena of Recommender Systems (RSs). RSs provide suggestions ("recommendations") for items that are likely to be appropriate for the user profile, and are increasingly adopted in content-intensive multimedia applications to complement traditional forms of search in large information spaces. This paper explores RSs through the lens of User Interface (UI) Design Patterns. We have performed a systematic analysis of 54 recommendation-empowered content-intensive multimedia applications, in order to: (i) discover the occurrences of existing domain independent UI patterns; (ii) identify frequently adopted UI solutions that are not modelled by existing patterns, and define a set of new UI patterns, some of which are specific of the interfaces for recommendation features while others can be useful also in a broader context. The results of our inspection have been discussed with and evaluated by a team of experts, leading to a consolidated set of 14 new patterns that are reported in the paper. Reusing pattern-based design solutions instead of building new solutions from scratch enables novice and expert designers to build good UIs for Recommendation-empowered content intensive multimedia applications more effectively, and ultimately can improve the UX experience in this class of systems. From a broader perspective, our work can stimulate future research bridging Recommender Systems, Web Engineering and Interface Design by means of Design Patterns, and highlights new research directions also discussed in the paper.

Every computational device must allow for some form of interaction with its user. Human–computer interaction is the discipline that studies how people interact with computational devices and the implications that the design of the human–machine interface has for this interaction. The discipline also investigates wider communal and social implications associated with user interface design and the use of digital systems and artifacts.

At the end of this paper, it has analyzed and put forward some principles that we should abide in the usability design of human computer interface, which provide some design basis for the usability research in the development of product interface.

Mobile user interface (UI) design plays a very important role in determining an application that can be adopted by all types of users, especially those residing in rural areas. This review aims to provide a mapping of previously published studies on mobile UI design application for smallholder agriculture to be a smart farmer. The focus of this scoping review is on the design elements of the proposed UI, strategies of inquiry used and to find out if there is a UI design that involves geospatial context by published articles. The results show that interview and observation are the most common field study methods used to obtain information in designing mobile UI, and the most widely applied UI elements are audio and Interactive Voice Response (IVR). There are many user interface elements that can be used by farmers who have different skills level in dealing with mobile technology. Icon interface is an important element in designing mobile UI for rural farmers based on previous results. Other than that, the use of location function in mobile UI design shows an upward trend where three recent articles used location function to report crop pest and disease and determine the nearest market location. In addition, there is a need to design geospatial elements such as map for mobile UI that match the skills of rural farmers to support the fourth Industrial Revolution in agriculture to be a smart farmer.

In 2023, digital literacy has increased to be discussed which navigates human interaction with the current digital environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between digital literacy and user interface (UI) design quality using a usability testing approach. The study involved collecting data through a series of trials with participants representing different levels of digital literacy.
