Vehicle Number Plate Recognition for Toll System

Number plate detection plays a crucial role in various applications such as traffic monitoring, vehicle identification, and law enforcement.In recent years, advancements in computer vision and Machine Learning Techniques have revolutionized Number plate recognition systems.This paper proposes a location-based Number plate detection method that combines K-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm(KNN) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to accurately detect and recognize Number plates in real-time.The proposed system consists main stages: Number plate localization and Number plate recognition.In the first stage, a KNN-based approach is utilized to detect the presence and location of Number plates within an input image.The KNN model is trained using a large dataset of annotated images, enabling it to learn the distinctive features and patterns associated with Number plates.This stage aims to accurately identify the regions of interest containing Number plates, even in challenging scenarios such as varying lighting conditions, occlusions, and complex backgrounds.

Automatic number plate recognition(ANPR) is one of the smart transportation method that provides a safe medium of transportation and monitoring planning used by many two wheeler vehicles as well as four wheeler vehicles to boost traffic controlling, routing, parking system, toll collection, and governance and insuring highway law. There are various techniques and algorithms has been developed so that we can identify and recognize Number plates. This paper shows a various deep learning approach for recognizing and detecting number plate. This system is divided into three parts, i.e. number plate detection, segmentation, and character recognition. In our proposed system for number plate detection Yolo method is used, after that some filters are applied and then characters are segmented. Finally the Convolutional Neural Network is used to recognize all the segmented characters.

Real Time Number Plate Recognition System is an image processing technology which uses number (license) plate to identify the vehicle. The objective is to design an efficient automatic authorized vehicle identification system by using the vehicle number plate. No plate help for movement of traffic securely without any collision. They can reduce the number of accidents on roads like pedestrian accident and right-angle collision of two cars. Number plate recognition (NPR) can be used in various fields such as vehicle tracking, traffic monitoring, automatic payment of tolls on highways or bridges, surveillance systems, tolls collection points, and parking management systems. The developed system first detects the vehicle and then captures the vehicle image. Vehicle number plate region is localized using Neural Network(rcnn) then image segmentation is done on the image. Character recognition technique is used for the character extraction from the plate. The system is implemented and simulated in python, and its performance is tested on real image. Automatic vehicle detection and recognition is a key technique in most of traffic related applications and is an active research topic in the image processing domain. Different methods, techniques and algorithms have been developed for vehicle detection and recognitions but they are not very useful for parking system. In this project we aim to make an application which will help for society and mostly for corporation buldings in each state for doing their work very efficiently and in very small time. Live camera feeds are the primary input we give the system. On the main gate is a camera. When a car or bike passes in front of the camera, the camera reads the number plate number. Using an OCR algorithm, this vehicle can be determined to be authorized or not. If the car is not allowed in the premises the notification will be activated. authorized popup will be on if the vehicle is authorized

With the growth of population in urban cities, there is a rapid increase in the number of vehicles and hence there is shortage of parking spaces. In this paper we provide a novel idea of automatic number plate detection and recognition along with allotment of parking space. The parking space is allocated in an efficient manner as distance traveled will be less. The number plate detection is done by extracting the image from the video and the number is identified using Optical Character Recognition. The parking space algorithm uses sequential assignment of parking spaces; the algorithm is eventually improved to solve the real time parking allotment.

Number Plate Localization (NPL) has been widely used as part of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. NPL method determines the accuracy of ANPR system. Although it is a mature research, the challenge stills persist especially in crowded situation where many vehicles present. Therefore, a method is proposed to localize number plate in crowded situation. The proposed NPL method uses vertical edge density to extract potential region of number plate then detect the number plate using combination of Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The method employs GPU to deal with multiple number plate detection, to handle multi-scale detection window, and to perform real time detection. The test result shows good results, 0.9883 value of AUC (Area Under Curve), and 0.9362 of BAC (Balance Accuracy). Moreover, potential real time detection is foreseen because total process is executed in less than 50 ms. Errors are mainly caused by background that contain letters, non-standard number plate and highly covered number plate

The video surveillance system is preferred for security monitoring, however, the detection of moving object is a challenging part. In areas where parking space is allotted to a particular vehicle, a wrongly parked vehicle can be recognized. It is noted that the number plates of the vehicle are found in different shape, size and also they are different in color. This makes the detection of the vehicle by their number plates, the most interesting and challenging research topic. Number plate detection is helpful in finding stolen cars, car parking management system and identification of the vehicle in traffic. This paper presents an approach for Number Plate Recognition (NPR) using morphological operation and Sobel edge detection method. In this approach, all the letters and numbers used in the number plate are segmented by using bounding box method. After segmentation, template matching approach is used to recognize numbers and characters. The number plate decoded can be used further for identification, matching and documentation purpose of vehicle details.

The number plate recognition (NPR) system is one of the categories of smart transportation and detection mechanism (STDM). This is a combination of the technology in which the application enables the system to detect and automatically read the license id of number plate of vehicle from digitally captured images. Automatically capturing the license plate is the process of detecting and transforming the pixels data of a digital image into the plain text data or ASCII text of the number plate. Our project contains a method for the vehicle number plate recognition from the image using mathematical morphological operations (erosion, dilation). The main objective is to use and combine different morphological operations in such a way that the license plate of the certain vehicle can be detected and translatedeffectively. This is based on various operation such as image improvement, Gray scale transformation, Bilateral Filtering edge detection and getting the number plate from the picture of vehicle. After the completion of the above-mentioned steps, now the process of segmentation is being applied to detect the text present on number plate by making use ofmatching of template and OCR. This system is able to detect the license number accurately as well as quickly from the vehicle’s picture.

This research paper presents the development and evaluation of an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with Regex correction. The aim is to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of car verification and security processes at First Technical University, Ibadan. The ANPR system was implemented both without Regex correction and with Regex correction. The evaluation results demonstrate significant improvements in the system's performance when CNN with Regex correction is employed. The CNN-based ANPR system achieves a precision of 1.00, recall of 0.90, and F1-score of 0.95 in accurately identifying number plates. These scores indicate increased accuracy and reduce false positives compared to the system without Regex correction. The integration of CNN and Regex correction effectively handles variations and errors in the number plate data, leading to a reliable and efficient car verification process. Future work can focus on further refining the CNN model and optimizing the Regex correction algorithms to enhance the system's accuracy and robustness. The developed ANPR system, utilizing CNN with Regex correction, shows great potential for enhancing car verification and security in various domains, including law enforcement, parking management, and traffic monitoring

Traffic control and vehicle owner identification has become major problem in every country. Sometimes it becomes difficult to identify vehicle owner who violates traffic rules and drives too fast. Therefore, it is not possible to catch and punish those kinds of people because the traffic personal might not be able to retrieve vehicle number from the moving vehicle because of the speed of the vehicle. Therefore, there is a need to develop Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system as a one of the solutions to this problem. There are numerous ANPR systems available today. These systems are based on different methodologies but still it is really challenging task as some of the factors like high speed of vehicle, non-uniform vehicle number plate, language of vehicle number and different lighting conditions can affect a lot in the overall recognition rate. Most of the systems work under these limitations. In this paper, different approaches of ANPR are discussed by considering image size, success rate and processing time as parameters. Towards the end of this paper, an extension to ANPR is suggested.

the focal idea of following paper is to introduce a system which is more usable and efficient to detect and recognize the vehicle number plate in Pakistani scenario. There are always some constraints in which an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system work. The challenges include poor illumination, camera speed and variable background. In this paper, we propose a method where distinct feature matching is applied to get acceptable results in Pakistani conditions where number plates usually don't follow a standard pattern. The developed system is tested on a dataset of fifty images containing variable size and style number plates having Latin script. The initial results show that our system is able to detect and recognize most of the plates and can be tested further to see the feasibility of implementing it in real environment with multi-script recognition.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) uses number plates to identify vehicles. The goal of an automated vehicle identification system is to identify the vehicle based on the number plate. The system enforces the regulations, parking, etc. It can also be used at the entrance to protect a large area, such as a military zone or the region around important government buildings like the military base, Parliament, Supreme Court, etc. The smart technology recognizes and captures the image of the vehicle. The number plate area of the vehicle is extracted using image segmentation on the image. Optical character recognition is used for character recognition. The performance data may also be compared to database records to determine the car owner, enrollment location, residence, etc. The testing showed that the improved algorithm easily recognized the number plate of a vehicle on genuine photographs.

Automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) is a process of identification of the license plate from an image taken at any signal stop or parking station. The Identified information or the number plate can be used for keeping a check on signal stops or for monetary settlements at parking lots or toll stations. It can also be used around the world for law and administrative works like checking a vehicle if it is registered or not. It also finds its use in safety supervision system. The ALPR can be used upon various types of pictures like color images, black and white images and etc. ALPR may fail a number of times if the quality of the picture is not up to the mark. So, ALPR depend a lot in the image quality, and hence the challenges in its real-life application. It may be used both indoors and outdoors but it must be able to process the images both quickly and successfully in all sorts of environments, be it daytime or night time, sunny or rainy. Our proposed method mainly has three modules: 1) Detection of license plate 2) Segmentation of Characters 3) Text Box Generation. The number plates sometimes may be unclear for the cameras. It may sometimes have dirt and scratches on it and thus increasing the complexities of the ALPR system. Today nationwide ALPR has been adopted by several law and governmental agencies for its efficiency and usefulness. Public safety agencies are using the ALPR system to gather and store relevant information about people and to keep a check on the vehicular activities. It is becoming a significant tool for the Law Enforcement Agencies.

The automation of toll collection is a key problem in modern transportation systems due to increasing traffic congestion, fuel wastage, and dependency on manual or booth-based toll processing. Although FASTag systems improve speed and transparency, they still require physical scanning units and face failures due to unreadable tags or poor sensor contact. To overcome these challenges, this project proposes a Smart Boothless Toll Collection System that operates using RFID-based vehicle identification, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) using YOLOv11 and EasyOCR, and energy harvesting through piezoelectric transducers embedded beneath a speed breaker. The system triggers toll processing automatically when a vehicle is detected using IR sensors, captures the number plate using a webcam, and processes it through ANPR for toll deduction. A Flask-based web dashboard logs and displays vehicle history, timestamps, and energy generated, while an RFID module serves as a backup validation mechanism. The result is an automated, energy-aware tolling solution designed for realtime use in Smart Highway infrastructure.

The number of mobile vehicles on the roads in Indonesia is increasing every year. Therefore, it is essential to verify the identities of these vehicles for a variety of reasons, including locating stolen vehicles, enforcing traffic laws, managing car parks, and collecting tolls. Nevertheless, inspecting these vast numbers of vehicles manually is a challenging task. Motor vehicle number plate detection and recognition play a crucial role in intelligent transport systems. Generally, the detection and recognition of number plates on motor vehicles entail three main stages. Machine learning-based object detection, which encompasses a range of algorithms that can automatically identify and locate objects in images or videos, is the first stage. These models leverage multiple layers of processing units to extract intricate features from input data, thereby enhancing overall efficiency for object detection purposes. The YOLO algorithm is a popular object detection algorithm that can detect objects from images or videos in real-time using custom dataset. In this study, we directly compared YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 models which underwent equal training epochs, achieved stability, and utilized hyperparameters with an image size 640, 100 epochs, val 200, and batch 16. The YOLOv8 gets the best performance with almost 97.5% mAP and 69.4% mAP50-95. Keywords: Plate Number, YOLOv5, YOLOv8, Object Detection, Custom Dataset

Vehicular number plate recognition (VNPR) is an important issue which can be solved using image processing and computer vision. VNPR process, when taken into consideration, can be used to solve a variety of issues in the fields of road safety and security. The problems can range from parking concerns to traffic control and might also include situations related to tollbooth or speed limit issues. Vehicle number plate recognition has a lot of side complexities arising due to a lot of factors including variable light dissipation, camera quality, and also speed at which the vehicle is moving. The proposed system will be able to identify number plates of cars and bikes and help trace the owner of that vehicle. We use various machine learning techniques and image processing utilities along with computer vision to address few of the issues which can be solved using the same.
