Starting with this issue, the Editorial duties for the JCI move to Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As we begin our five-year tenure at the helm of this prestigious journal, the tradition of excellence that these two schools typically display on the basketball court now enters the editorial boardroom.

Update from the <i>Radiology</i> Editorial Office: 2020

“Nothing so difficult as the beginning, …unless perhaps the end.”(Byron) I had plenty of warning about the task of writing this, my first Editorial. Perhaps it says something of the personality of emergency physicians that we thrive on the challenge of deadlines. A quick search of the brain for that pithy saying, that attention grabbing first line that seizes the reader and shakes an earnest five minutes from a full agenda. Beginning a new venture is difficult for all of us. Particularly when the precedent has been set at such a high standard. George Jelinek took a seven page newsletter and in five years created a high quality scientific journal. Few of us could have achieved a similar feat and undoubtedly whatever happens to the journal from now on, its success is directly attributable to the leadership and commitment of George. However, fortunately for the journal, ending is even more difficult and George has graciously agreed to continue with the journal as its Scientific Editor. His presence in that role will contribute immeasurably to the continuity of scientific quality and the maintenance of standards. We all contribute accordingly to our particular talents and interests. My own interests lie in management and organisation and my personal goal is to restructure the management of the journal. If the journal is to prosper, then it cannot rely forever on the commitment and energy of any one individual. The management structure of the journal is to change. There will now be an Editor in Chief who is supported by a Scientific Editor (George Jelinek) who is responsible for the scientific content of the journal, a Publishing Editor (James Taylor) who is responsible for the printing and publication of the journal, and a Business Manager (yet to be confirmed) who is responsible for finance, advertising etc. The Editorial Board will be expanded and will become responsible for editorial policy and the panel of referees will be expanded. Referees will be called on by Section Editors to review articles prior to publication. The philosophy of the journal will not change. The journal still aims to be the preeminent reference on emergency medicine within Australasia and to become recognised internationally as a journal of high reputation. A five year strategic plan has been produced to guide the development of the journal through its further transition. Additional subscribers will be targeted both in Australasia and internationally. The first task, which was to transfer the administration of the journal to the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine headquarters in Melbourne and to provide resources in the way of administrative staff to manage the day to day business of the journal is now complete. A new printer has been engaged in Melbourne. The remainder of this year will then focus on a change of format, and review of the content to broaden its interest and readership. This will be achieved without compromise of the quality of scientific content. Additional subscribers will also be targeted in that time along with corporate sponsorship and advertising. We now have a proven product to sell, and active marketing will occur to broaden the readership and sales. The format of the journal is likely to change with the new volume in 1995. It is probable that the journal will change to an A4 size. A consistent corporate image will be used as part of the marketing plan. The changes in organisation and administration are principally designed to broaden the energy available to support the journal. No journal can survive by dependence on any individual. The new management structure will allow more involvement from a range of individuals. Volunteers are required to assist with that growth and to play an important role in the on-going development of the journal. Included in this issue of the journal is a flyer which calls for expressions of interest from individuals who wish to play a role in the journal. In particular, assistance is required with refereeing of articles, copy editing and to encourage additional financial support for the journal through advertising and subscription. This is your journal and its future is in your hands. The cooperative effort of many individuals is the only way in which the journal can achieve its aims. George has provided continuity for the journal which is most appreciated and invaluable. My task is to build a management structure around that scientific continuity and thus ensure that the journal remains a source of pride to all emergency physicians in Australasia.

Editorial Policy

We analyzed the distribution characteristics of the scientific production of Brazilian dentistry researchers of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. The Lattes curriculum data of 211 researchers from Oral Pathology, Oral Surgery, and Oral Medicine fields were included (2018-2020). Over their academic career, 39 researchers published 7,555 papers (average, 175 articles/researcher); 3,876/7,555 papers were indexed in the Web of Science. During 2018-2020, 1,440/7,555 (19%) papers were published. Brazilian dental researchers contribute significantly to international research by participating in scientific journals' editorial boards, evaluating research promotion agencies, training researchers, and contributing to scientific and technological development.

A cornerstone of the scientific ethos is that editorial board members should be selected based on their scholarly achievements, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and evidence that their work is of value to others in their disciplines. To discern if this reasoning is applied in practice, this study examined the scholarly records of the editorial boards of premier peer-reviewed journals sponsored by the leading professional associations in management and six related disciplines.

25 years of molecular mechanisms

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety (CRFSFS) by the Institute of Food Technologists. The success of our journal relies on the teamwork of our dedicated staff, Scientific and Associate Editors, and Editorial Board Members. The Editorial Board has been expanded in 2026 to add more Members At Large who have agreed to review at least six manuscripts annually. The Members At Large augment the pool of expert reviewers who aid the journal. The Associate Editors strive to obtain at least three detailed and valid reviews for each paper. The CRFSFS editorial team greatly appreciates the efforts and expertise of the reviewers. As scientists retire or change direction in their careers, their expertise must be replenished with new scientists. In 2025, the Institute of Food Technologists invested in the Early Career Researchers Program to aid new scientists in refining their peer-reviewed article review skills. Professor John Coupland of Pennsylvania State University, an IFT Past President, leads the program. Two CRFSFS editors, Associate Professor Marciane Magnani of the Federal University of Paraíba in Brazil and Professor Donald Schaffner of Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, are members of the Early Career Researchers Advisory Board. Gender Equity in Dental Academics

Introduction Poor gender representation has been identified as commonplace in the authorship of papers across scientific fields. In spite of the association of gender diversity with positive outcomes in the workplace—and its links to creativity and impact—it is widely reported that the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are traditionally male dominated.1,2 In the winter 2018 edition of Science Editor, Rivera Mindt and coauthors concluded, in a case study involving the journal The Clinical Neuropsychologist, that reaching out and keeping a commitment to diversity are strategies worth pursuing to diversify the editorial process and science as a whole.3 However, issues related to underrepresentation can also involve geography, and by extension, culture. In keeping with the 2019 CSE Annual Meeting theme of “inclusion, identity, technology, and beyond,” we wanted to explore geographical and cultural representation in the editorial boards of a field of science that is inherently global (aquatic science). We aimed to explore (1) what is the cultural and geographical distribution and behavior of editorial boards across all titles listed in the Scimago subject category “Aquatic Science,” (2) whether there is a relationship between editorial board composition and scientific output in terms of geographical and cultural representation, and (3) whether journals with higher editorial board richness benefit in terms of measurable outcomes, such as journal rank.
