Abstract

Globalization has greatly increased the interactions between cultures. Encountering a different culture is a challenging experience as well as an enriching experience for both individuals and organizations. Research has shown many cross-cultural differences in the ways people think and behave. However, better management of the differences requires a deeper understanding of (1) Why such differences exist, and (2) How people react to cultural differences. The first three papers investigate the role of culturally cultivated motivational orientations (presentation 1), beliefs (presentations 1 & 2), and ideologies (presentation 3) in explaining perception (i.e., conspiracy perception in presentation 1) and ethical judgment and choices (i.e., bribery in presentation 2 and support for CSR in presentations 3). The rest two papers attempt to answer the second question on how people respond to cultural differences and boundaries. They investigate the role of beliefs and feelings about cultural difference in explaining management of ideas from different cultures (presentation 4) and preference for brands related to home culture (presentation 5). As a whole the symposium contributes to the understanding of the role of beliefs about cultures and culturally cultivated beliefs in individual judgment, decision making, and performance.
