The Application of Cultural Acculturation to the Form and Structure of the Surakarta Grand Mosque

The architecture of the Surakarta Grand Mosque is a physical manifestation of cultural acculturation, integrating Islamic values, Javanese cosmology, and historical development. This study aims to identify the application of cultural acculturation within the mosque’s spatial layout, form, and structure. Utilizing a qualitative method with a
single case study approach, the research employs interactive analysis through field observations, interviews, and historical document reviews spanning the reigns of Paku Buwana III to Paku Buwana X. Results indicate that spatially, the mosque consistently applies a Javanese-Islamic cosmological axis aligned with Demak Palace patterns. In terms of from and structure, visual hybridity is found in the tiered tajug roof and the
sakaguru timber construction system, which adapted to functional and ceremonial need. These findings confirms that cultural acculturation in the Surakarta Grand Mosque serves as a strategy that strengthens the resilience of vernacular architecture against changing times without losing its philosophical identity.

The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach through field observations, interviews with managers, Pokdarwis, business actors, the community, and tourists, as well as documentation to analyze the implementation of the three pillars of sustainability. The findings show: environmental aspects are managed through mangrove conservation and Angen Bali's recycling program; the economic aspect is strengthened by the DEWI SITA Program with the development of seafood culinary and local handicrafts; The socio-cultural aspect is maintained through the preservation of Sakenan Temple and the active participation of the younger generation. The research resulted in the concept of an integrated area architecture master plan including conservation zoning, structured creative economy centers, and community-based management systems as a replica model for sustainable tourism village development in Indonesia.

Strategies for Enhancing Visual Accents through Luminance Contrast Control in Semi-Outdoor Galleries

Lighting is a key element in shaping the visual perception of a gallery. In the semi-outdoor gallery of Kampung Susun Kunir, daylight dominates during the daytime, while artificial lighting is not yet optimal and fails to create visual accents due to limitations in luminaire positioning on the exposed ceiling. This study aims to formulate strategies for enhancing visual accents through luminance contrast control. Simulations using DIALux were conducted to analyze luminance values and ratios, both in surrounding walls (immediate) and vertical surfaces (ambience). The results show that artificial lighting is ineffective during the day; however, interventions in the form of additional spotlights and linear spotlights at night successfully increased visual contrast across display surfaces. These findings underscore the importance of adjusting lighting to spatial conditions and serve as a foundation for developing efficient and adaptive lighting guidelines for community exhibition spaces to support artwork legibility and improve visitors’ visual experience.

Result of this study provides the recommendation of thermal and daylighting design strategies implementation in tropical-equatorial area, specifically student dormitory of Tadulako University in Palu Indonesia. This study employed literature, field, and mathematical study to analyses dormitory physical design, as well as thermal and lighting environment. Climatic variables were recorded both internal and external for 3 consecutive days. Result of the study indicated that the condition of Student Dormitory of Tadulako University needs to be improved. This study highlighted that opening area of 30%-50% from the floor area were needed. Furthermore, side-hung and jalousie window with light shelf were recommended for uniform daylighting and optimal air flow.

Temporary housing for beneficiaries of the Housing Development Program in the slum area of Kelurahan Bira Makassar is interesting to study because its fulfillment is pursued independently by target households. This research aims to understand their preferences for temporary housing during the development process. This research uses the grounded theory method with a content analysis approach and open coding technique. The results show that preferences for temporary housing include: (1) space needs such as bedrooms, toilets, and kitchens; (2) locations close to places of worship, health facilities, village offices, and permanent housing construction locations; and (3) free from rental fees. Beneficiary priority preferences include basic domestic needs that are short-term in nature. Understanding these preferences is important in designing settlements that are more suited to local needs based on the wishes and needs of residents.

Climatic architecture is becoming a popular concept as it addresses issues of climate change, economy, and building health. The pandemic has heightened awareness of the importance of cross-ventilation, bringing the climatic concept back into focus for the design of new buildings and the development of existing ones. This study aims to: 1) Identify the characteristics of urban village houses with attached homes focused on thermal comfort, 2) Determine climatic design criteria for attached houses, 3) Understand the application of climatic concepts in attached houses. The methodology used is descriptive quantitative, with data from field conditions and references from journals. The results indicate that in addition to window placement aligned with wind direction, the use of wind chimneys and rain harvesting systems can be implemented in houses in densely built villages. This research is expected to provide knowledge about climatic architecture and offer solutions for its application in contemporary building design.

Considering the needs of children as users is essential when creating Child-Friendly Integrated Public Spaces (RPTRA). Hence, this study sought to explore how the psychology of architecture focused on user psychology and behavior can contribute to the creation of RPTRAs. This research at Dataran Engku Putri, Batam City, utilised qualitative descriptive methods involving literature study and observation techniques. The results revealed that this public space was less adequate in meeting the RPTRA criteria including security and safety, recreational function and comfort, ease of accessibility, park attractiveness, health, meeting social needs, and learning elements. Therefore, it is necessary to improve and develop specialised play facilities for children based on the five aspects of psychology of architecture, namely space, size and shape, furniture and its arrangement, colour and texture, sound, temperature, and lighting.

Palembang is a city with a long history and one of the oldest cities in Indonesia. One of the driving aspects for the formation of the city is its reputation as the area for main trade in Southern Sumatra. The trade also encouraged the development of immigrant communities which later became their inhabited colonies such as the Al-Munawar Village inhabited by immigrants from Yemeni Arabs. The primary goal of this research is to demonstrate the impact of trade interactions on architectural expression. This demonstrates that architectural form is impacted by a variety of factors, namely commercial interactions. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the correlation between the history of a community and its architectural elements ranging from regional spatial planning to decorative elements. This involved using the historical research approach with architectural semiotic analysis techniques. The results showed that the spatial layout of Al-Munawar Village has a typology similar to those in settlers' villages, for both fellow Yemeni Arabs in Sungai Lumpur Village and Chinese migrants in Kapitan Village. It was also discovered that the buildings in Al- Munawar Village reflect the relationship between the residents and the surrounding environment as observed with the Sultanate of Palembang Darussalam. The buildings also reflect the relationship with Yemeni Arab migrants outside Indonesia such as those in Malaysia and Singapore. This means architecture is used as a sign of the socio- economic relations for the residents of Al-Munawar village.
