ABSTRACT In his pioneering work on British Columbia's forest products industry, Roger Hayter and his colleagues compellingly demonstrated the remaking of environmental economic geographies through the shift from Fordist models of production toward “flexible accumulation.” Taking inspiration from and extending this work, I argue that the financialization of the US timber industry in recent decades has presented Canadian firms with novel avenues for flexibility. In particular, I focus on what I have termed the “vertical disintegration” of the US forest products industry since the 1990s, the result of which has been that the vast majority of private industrial timberland in the United States is either held by real estate investment trusts or institutional and private investors. For many Canadian firms, the financialization of US forestry has made it possible to evade the crises rampant in their own industry while also avoiding potential treaty issues around shipping Canadian wood into US markets. This paper draws on 60 semistructured interviews conducted with key informants between 2019 and 2023, as well as participant observation at industry conferences, and analysis of corporate annual reports and other financial and industry journalism to argue that financialization has reconfigured forest–economy relations, again around flexibility, but with different aims and outcomes than the flexibility described by economic geographers during the 1990s. In this instance, Canadian firms have managed the crises tendencies in their own industry by investing in one that—due to restructuring and financialization—increasingly became available to them.

ABSTRACT In order to broaden the discussion of labour agency constraints to include nature as a shaping force, this research examines how ecological crises affect labour agency in the Chilean salmon industry. The study uses a path‐dependence methodology to provide an analysis of shifts in power resources. It concludes that the need to expand the commodity frontier following changes in production conditions due to crises forces capital to adapt its production processes and thus changes the structural conditions of labour agency. Workers must therefore adapt their strategies and actions. Specifically, associational power declined due to layoffs and the introduction of flexible contracts, leading to union depoliticisation. Societal power weakened as unions became more distanced from civil society. Institutional power was affected by a decline in legal mobilisation, and structural power by demands for specialised workers. These changes highlight the need for labour movements to integrate environmental concerns into their agendas.

ABSTRACT This article examines the relations between the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and the urban economy of Atlantis, South Africa, with particular attention to the Witsand neighbourhood. Drawing on Milton Santos' theory of the two circuits of the urban economy, the study explores how the upper circuit of greentech industries within the ASEZ interacts with the lower circuit of less capitalised commercial and service activities in Witsand. Methodologically, the research combines historical analysis, semi‐structured interviews and ethnographic observation to capture the contradictions shaping urban space. The findings suggest that, while the ASEZ promotes technological modernisation and attracts global investment, it coexists with long‐standing racialised inequalities that continue to shape everyday life in Atlantis. In this context, Black populations living in precarious conditions remain marginalised, even as the zone projects an image of green and inclusive development. Initiatives intended to link the two circuits—such as training programmes and local partnerships—have proved insufficient to transform these structural patterns. By situating Atlantis within these dynamics, the article contributes to broader debates on industrialisation, racial capitalism and urban inequality in the South African context.

ABSTRACT This article examines how authoritarian governance, in Egypt, is being recalibrated through infrastructural technologies that embed regulation into everyday life. It argues that, in the current phase of neoliberal financialisation, authoritarian governance must, by necessity, harness citizens' capacities for self‐regulation to achieve the neoliberal objective of making the population creditworthy. Focusing the analysis on the recent nationwide rollout of prepaid electricity meters, the article traces a gradual shift from direct police coercion to technopolitical control, where mundane devices are used to discipline consumption and enforce financial compliance. Using digital ethnography, the study investigates citizens' responses to the new technologies of governance. The analysis shows that, in their engagement with these technologies, citizens articulate a normative critique that challenges the inequity and exclusion embedded in them, forging a distinct idiom of contestation and opposition.

Abstract Problems that collective actors struggle with require collaborative and transformative knowledge production to be solved. Despite the long tradition of participatory approaches in social science research, issues concerning collaborative methodologies are often located at the bottom of the knowledge hierarchy. We want to place them at the centre of social movement research, but also direct attention to the processes through which collaborative knowledge is produced. We propose the metaphor of “kitchen‐work” to focus on how “the cooking” of collaborative research with collective actors is done, how “recipes” for a more equitable society are created together. The metaphor illustrates methodological approaches where preparatory, relational, and often invisible work is done in research with collective actors. Using a classification of methodologies within, against, and beyond academia (inspired by David M. Bell and Kate Pahl), we distinguish recipes for research collaboration with collective actors and provide practical suggestions on cooking together collaboratively.

Abstract Global escalation in social and environmental disruption raises crucial methodological and ethical questions for researchers working in impacted communities. Interpretive social science and humanities research can make visible the experiences of those living through socio‐ecological “rupture”. Yet, there are important ethical and design challenges to face regarding: (i) the temporal and spatial scope of research; (ii) how we work with affective responses to extreme, cascading events; and (iii) how we address vulnerabilities and agency within shifting power relations. We examine these dilemmas through three case studies that illustrate why researchers need to reflect critically upon the purpose, design, and timing of research, and the demands of “being in the field” in crisis settings. Drawing on approaches from feminist and decolonial studies, critical disaster studies, and critical disability studies, we consider potential pathways to respond to these dilemmas, with the aim of catalysing further scholarly discussion about research in rupture settings.

Abstract Following the lead of labour movements, this article frames slums as labour geographies whose evictions constitute the devaluation of labour in spatial terms. This devaluation occurs in two modes: in the first, through the rendering of workers as “encroachers” or “the urban poor” in policy documents and public discourse, thereby unmooring workers from their geographies of reproduction. In the second, evictions entail the material erasure of the unwaged labour of autoconstruction and other activities that produce and sustain these geographies. Through ethnographic research in Chennai, India, and archival work, “capture” emerges as an embodied practice and emic concept that makes visible value generated through the reproduction of labour power, and the labour sunk into urban lands where access to the realm of the formal is foreclosed. Visibilising this labour of caste‐marginalised working classes is a key way by which discourse on who belongs in the city can be transformed.

Abstract Decolonial theory (DT) has been advanced as a strategy for decolonisation alternative to 20 th ‐century anticolonialism, positioning decolonisation as an epistemic project rather than a historical‐material one. Here, I examine DT's arguments about anticolonialism: that it had a dogmatic bias towards nationalism and postcolonial state formation, and that anticolonial Marxism ignores cultural and epistemological aspects of colonialism. Via a consideration of the history of 20 th ‐century decolonisation and an engagement with the anticolonial Marxism of Walter Rodney and Amílcar Cabral, I argue that DT relies on a mischaracterisation of this intellectual and political history, thereby foreclosing serious engagement with it. An important consequence is the downplaying of the historical and continued significance of imperialism. Engaging recent work on the question of decolonising geography, I argue for greater engagement with the politics of national liberation and internationalism in contemporary discussions of decolonisation, and for the continuing relevance of anticolonial Marxism.

Abstract This paper examines corporate LGBTQ+ activism and the productive incorporation of queers into capitalism in Brazil. Mobilising transnational queer materialist critiques in tandem with critical perspectives from teoria do cu , the paper sheds light on how homonormativity operates not simply as a set of cultural norms or representational tropes, but as a structural and ideological formation that integrates queer inclusion into global circuits of capitalist accumulation while obscuring the material and historical violence sustaining those circuits. The paper draws from fieldwork conducted at the Out & Equal Forum in São Paulo, exploring how corporate investments in LGBTQ+ diversity operate within wider economic geographies that differentially fold queers into global capitalism. In so doing, the paper contributes to extant debates in queer economic geography, underlining the importance of moving beyond hegemonic homonormativity critiques to grasp the complex, uneven ways in which queers are incorporated into (homo)capitalism.
