This article examines the collection of Malay manuscripts and printed books of William Maxwell, a British administrative officer based in the Malay Peninsula during the nineteenth century. The collection is remarkable for its extensive range of materials, encompassing topics such as literature, history, religion and the occult sciences. The items were acquired from various local sources, providing a valuable insight into the acquisition and circulation of books in the region during this period. This article thus seeks to reconstruct some of the local private libraries that formed the basis of Maxwell’s collection. In doing so it aims to identify the types of texts that were of interest in the Malay peninsula during the nineteenth century. At the same time, it will explore the relationships between Maxwell and the original owners, placing the collection within the broader context of local and colonial book-collecting activities.

Research carried out by the Balai Arkeologi Medan (Medan Archaeological Research Office) between 2008 and 2016 at Kota Cina yielded interesting results regarding brick remains. Excavations undertaken in the Keramat Pahlawan area, near the Chinese prayer room, revealed different construction phases. Following the uncovering in 2013 of several practically parallel wall sections in the KC8-KC9 area through excavations and a survey, additional excavation carried out in 2016 confirmed the presence of four sections of brick walls. The configuration of these remains is reminiscent of the configuration of ancient Hindu-Buddhist buildings (candis) in West Sumatra, whether in Rao, Tanjung Medan, Pulau Sawah, Awang Maombiak or Padang Roco.

Fifty-five samples selected among the metal finds uncovered during the 2011–2016 Kota Cina excavations have been submitted to a non-destructive analysis using a portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometre. One of the three gold finds analysed yielded results close to those obtained at the end of the 1980s on a corpus of nine gold foils and led to suggest that they did not originate from alluvial deposits. The other two contain only gold and copper in different proportions. Measurements on twenty-seven samples indicate that they are made of copper, including 26 coins. Fourteen samples give results indicating that their materials are of copper alloys. The remaining samples show results indicating only iron or very high levels of iron combined with one or two other elements in their compositions.

The principle of religious neutrality found in the first principle of Pancasila, is the original thought of Sukarno, the founding father of the Republic of Indonesia. Sukarno cultivated this seed of non-exclusive religious patriotism in the 1920s and 1930s (when he was exiled to the Catholic Island of Flores). At the same time, under the leadership of Jesuit Father Van Lith SJ, a small group of Catholics in Java grew up with patriotic ideas. Political developments in the 1930s and particularly Japanese’s occupation (1942–1945) led Java's Catholic minority to become fully involved in the movement for Indonesian independence. Mr. Kasimo and the Jesuit Mgr. Soegijapranata SJ were two of Van Lith's students who integrated the Catholics in a new country called Indonesia. The most important contribution of the Catholic minority was found in the interpretation of Pancasila by Nicolas Driyarkara SJ, which gained wide acceptance in Indonesia in the 1960s. According to this Jesuit priest, Pancasila is a state principle that gives religion a very important place without making Indonesia a religious state.
