Abstract This study investigates how English health and illness metaphors are translated into Arabic, using examples from the BBC , Project Syndicate , and the Financial Times within the context of economic discourse. Applying cognitive metaphor theory, it examines metaphorical expressions related to health and illness in financial texts, exploring how these metaphors shape economic ideas and assessing the effectiveness of their Arabic translations. The research highlights the crucial role of health and illness metaphors in expressing complex economic conditions and their importance in both English and Arabic economic discussions. The results show that while literal translations often preserve the metaphorical meaning, some translators choose non-metaphorical equivalents, which can alter the metaphor’s impact and diminish clarity. The findings also emphasize the need for cognitive equivalence in metaphor translation and support approaches that improve mutual understanding of economic phenomena across languages, ensuring the original meaning of the metaphors is maintained. The study concludes that successful translation of these metaphors depends on understanding their cognitive functions and the genre’s context; strategies should aim to preserve the conceptual core of metaphors to facilitate clear communication with both expert and general audiences.

Abstract This paper aimed to investigate how footnotes and cultural memory references (CMRs) influence empathic evocation through a questionnaire-based study. To assess the impact, Chinese translations of two English stories by Singaporean writer Alfian Sa’at, namely “Shallow Focus” and “Reunion,” were selected as research materials, and Taiwanese adults were considered the target participants. A recruitment effort that included email distribution and social media advertising resulted in a total of 85 participants, who were randomly assigned to three groups to read three translation versions: translation with footnotes (Group 1), translation with lead-ins on cultural memory (Group 2), and translation with both footnotes and lead-ins on cultural memory (Group 3). A questionnaire was designed based on existing studies to measure the participants’ empathic responses. The results showed that both footnotes and CMRs could promote empathic evocation, with the highest reaction observed in Group 3. Additionally, CMRs could generate greater empathic evocation, possibly because they helped target readers feel a stronger sense of involvement in the stories.

Abstract This study investigates Veed-AI’s Arabic subtitles of English taboo expressions in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative analyses, the study examines the accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and effectiveness of subtitling procedures. The quantitative analysis involves categorizing and quantifying the frequency of different types of taboo expressions: sexual, scatological, and religious, along with their relevant translation procedures. The findings show that Veed-AI mainly employs understatement and omission as euphemistic strategies to convey the meaning and tone of the source text. However, while understatement falters in several instances regarding language fluency, omission compromises the discursive emphatic function of taboo expressions and adversely affects the flow of discourse. Additionally, Veed-AI presents some cases of incomprehensible transliteration and several instances of inappropriate literal translation due to a lack of contextual comprehension, resulting in subtitles that often lack cultural resonance or contextual accuracy.

Abstract Health texts are a type of text where non-optimal translation can have serious consequences. In the eHealth/mHealth case study presented here, we explore how different categories of translational agents perceive risk and manage it in the process of translating texts from a Norwegian health app into English. Based on the notion of risk in translation (e.g., Pym 2005) and conceptual analysis, we developed a model — The Risk Scenario — which we used to analyze interview, observational, and think-aloud data gathered during the translation process. We found that while the LSP and translator/quality checker in our study expressed the most concern over the risk of non-optimal target texts, the author and client were more focused on the risk of harming the health of end-users. Such differences likely arise from the proximal versus distal positioning (see Gile 2012) of different agents in relation to the act of translation. Additionally, we discovered that the type of text found in this kind of app — oral and informal — does not effectively communicate its risks, reaffirming the need for detailed translation briefs and suggesting that risk should be a compulsory category for source texts in high-risk domains.

It is not common to discuss within a single review two monographs by two different authors published a few months apart. Here, however, this pairing is more than justified. Delphine Grass and Lily Robert-Foley are very busy and productive in tandem. In their respective books, as well as other adjacent publications, they have developed a whole consistent agenda around the role of literary translation, an exciting by-product of their intellectual friendship. In their introductions, they already cite each other's forthcoming books as a source of inspiration, and they seem very much in tune with the relationship between translation theory and teaching practice. While Grass postulates that translation should be treated as a "creative-critical practice" in the first place, Robert-Foley attaches to her book (published in the series Practice as Research) a separate handbook of DYI translation exercises based on the translation procedures previously discussed in the monograph. Whereas Robert-Foley treats the ideas and expectations about translation of her students in France as a point of reference, Grass draws from her teaching experience in the UK, especially her translation module and her student's dissertation listed as one of her final examples. Finally, Grass leaves her first chapter on "translation memoirs" somewhat open-ended as if making room for a more collaborative continuation of the study outside of her book; and in fact, her and Robert-Foley's co-edited special issue of Life Writing on "The Translation Memoir" came out in 2024 almost concurrently with the two books (Grass and Robert-Foley 2024). In this rather uncanny and perhaps unprecedented way, Grass' and Robert-Foley's books both complete and complement each other. This is, of course, not to say that Translation as Creative-Critical Practice and Experimental Translation talk about the very same thing. In the first one, Grass examines a range of works that oscillate on the border between translation and other genres: commentary (translation memoirs), performance (performative

This study examines Edward Daniel Clarke’s “Letters on Travel” and his 1791 domestic tour as examples of travel writing that anticipate what Virgil Nemoianu defines as Biedermeier or secondary Romanticism and that promote distinctive approaches to ruins and the emotions they generate in viewers. These emotions range from the intensely cerebral inquisitiveness that drives Clarke’s archaeological inquiries to the somewhat dismal thrills of his antiquarian discoveries, and from the anguish caused by what he foresees as the inevitable dissolution of history’s material traces to the comic relief he injects into scenes of melancholy confrontation with ghostly remainders of bygone times.
