Inácio Monteiro as an Eyewitness and Testimony of the Mathematical Libraries in Coimbra
Abstract For a fair evaluation of the mathematical culture in Early modern Portugal, and especially in Coimbra, a pure reconstruction of the careers of the teachers, native and “foreign” alike, is not sufficient. My particular interest are the books circulating on the spot in private or public collections and mentioned in (partial) inventories/catalogues, and the “textbooks” and didactical instruments which the teachers developed ( Synopsis Mathematica by A. Thomas; Aigenler; König/dos Reis: see other spread publications); in this article I analysed the mathematical reading of Inácio Monteiro, which was very extensive, international and up-to-date. This is revealing for the contents of his teaching in the same period, and for the holdings of the local library, most probably - for their “advanced” character - the library of the “mathematical class”, to be distinguished from the books in the “livraria publica” (also preserved, and object of another forthcoming publication). All this (and some previous publications) fully confirms our former idea that in the eighteenth century Jesuit mathematical culture, at least in Coimbra, was not “outdated”, and the reproach of contemporary critics was unfair.
