Abstract The Amaravella collective, also known as the Cosmists, belongs to the period of the Russian avant-garde. There were seven members: Petr Fateev (1891–1971), Aleksandr Baranov (1901–1974), Vera Pshesetskaia (1879–1945/46), Sergei Shigolev (1895–1942), Boris Smirnoff-Rusetsky (1905–1993), Victor Chernovolenko (1900–1972), and Vladimir Yatskevich (?–late 1930s). Until now, very little was known about the work of Yatskevich. The article looks at the Petr Fateev archive in Moscow, which contains some 750 items, the majority by Fateev, and hundreds of drawings by Yatskevich; they show that he was a central member of the group, and that a reassessment needs to be made. The paper looks at the occult background of cosmism, the influence of Nikolai and Elena Roerich, the philosophy of Nikolai Fedorov, and the science of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. An examination of Yatskevich’s hitherto unknown Maro album, posits the theory that it is a visual and textual manifesto of Amaravella. A critical look at the cosmist landscapes by Fateev, shows how the cosmists’ spiritual quest elided into space flight, how Amaravella was intended to be the guide on that journey.

Abstract The article describes how Vasilii Kandinsky combined the “logical” and the “illogical” in his approach to the theory and practice of painting, especially during the period of his Improvisations and Compositions . To this end, attention is paid both to the exact sciences and to the esoteric or “Other”, including Theosophy and its immediate effect on Kandinsky’s tract, “On the Spiritual in Art”. Particular reference is made to the Theosophist and music teacher, Aleksandra Zakhar’ina-Unkovskaia, and, specifically, to the influence of her interpretations of music, colour and number on Kandinsky’s aesthetic development.

Abstract This article looks at the relationship between the scholar and collector Nikolai Khardzhiev and the artist Kazimir Malevich, tracing the origins and the development of the friendship between the two men. The text also examines the various ways in which Khardzhiev protected and preserved the artist’s legacy, not only by collecting and interpreting his paintings, drawings, and manuscripts, but also by pointing out the mistakes and misunderstandings that surrounded Malevich and his work, especially in the literature about the artist produced in the West.

Abstract Aside from its obvious influence on 20th century art in general, the Russian Avant-Garde was a precursor to many conceptual trends, not always directly related to our general notion of “Avant-garde”, but more as the fulfilment of its prophecies. This paper explores the legacy of the Russian Avant-garde through the prism of a multisensory study, involving haptics, optics, immersion and participation. Revisiting manifestos of the early 20th century in the context of contemporary theories of art and perception, the paper traces intersections and “dreams come true”. Inter alia, the paper also considers the problem of how to collect non-visual components of art from the viewpoint of contemporary museum practice.

Abstract Caricature became entrenched as a common form of social commentary in Russian visual culture in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Four prominent humor magazines: Iskra (Spark, 1859–1873), Budil’nik (Alarm Clock, 1865–1918), Strekoza (Dragonfly, 1875–1908), and Oskolki (Splinters, 1881–1916) promoted caricatures and built success largely on the public’s appetite for them. The editors and staff of these humor magazines made caricature a ready and effective tool of social criticism and helped develop a critical public familiar enough with the form to appreciate it. The rather gentle caricature of the early period and its benign social criticism established a foundation for a harsher partisan form of caricature as political advocacy during the revolution of 1905–1906.

Abstract Surveying the satirical press in the time of the early Russian emigration ca. 1920–1931, this essay focuses on caricatures and satirical drawings published in the Paris-based weeklies Bitche (Whip, 1920) and Satirikon (1931). Arguably, exemplifying the émigré reception and portrayal of Soviet Russia, the graphic works prepared for these journals by artists such as Yurii Annenkov, Mikhail Drizo and Mikhail Linskii sought to lampoon and debunk the Soviet political and military establishment as a gesture of refusal to accept the Bolshevik Revolution and as a reflection of the ressentiment and trauma caused by the need to emigrate. In discussing themes and personalities satirized in these vivid and often poignant caricatures, the essay also attempts to delineate the context against which they were created in order to provide a more precise understanding of their commentaries.
