Sefardska baština odnosi se na naslijeđe židovske zajednice protjerane 1492. godine s Iberskog poluotoka, koja se potom većinom raselila po Mediteranu. U Hrvatskoj su se sefardski Židovi naselili u Splitu i Dubrovniku, gdje su pridonijeli društvenom, gospodarskom i kulturnom razvoju tih gradova. Danas te zajednice još uvijek postoje, a njihova je baština sačuvana. Groblja i sinagoge su očuvane i u funkciji, ali nisu aktivno korištene. Razvoj turizma u Splitu i Dubrovnika omogućuje da se sefardska baština aktivnouključuje u turističku ponudu gradova. Cilj istraživanja je utvrditi profil posjetitelja sefardske baštine i njihovo zadovoljstvo posjećenim lokalitetima u Splitu i Dubrovniku. U tu svrhu provedeno je anketno istraživanje 2022. i 2023. godine na uzorku od 264 posjetitelja na židovskom groblju u Splitu i sinagogi u Dubrovniku. Primijenjene su metode deskriptivne statistike i multivarijatna analiza varijance (MANOVA). Uz multivarijatnu analizu varijance provedene su i dodatne analize s pomoću hi-kvadrat testa. Rezultati su pokazali da su posjetitelji sefardske baštine tipični kulturni turisti iako postoje razlike među posjetiteljima u Splitu i Dubrovniku, što se pripisuje položaju lokaliteta u gradu.

The articles in this thematic issue are the product of research on ‘(Re)Constructing Religioscapes as Competing Territorial Claims in Post-War Bosnia and Herzegovina,’ funded by the National Science Foundation (USA). The project was developed from earlier comparative and interdisciplinary research that had led to the development of a model of ‘Antagonistic Tolerance’ (AT) to understand relations over multiple generations between members of religiously-based heritage communities who lived intermingled but rarely intermarrying (Hayden et al., 2016).

In this paper I analyse two šehid turbe (mausolea) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one located in Banja Luka and the other in Zenica. I present and interpret how these cultural sediments, with their religious and political connotations, narratives and symbols, eroded over time, re-interpreted and transformed, and how top-down political and social contexts influenced the local micro-contexts of the turbe. I analyse as palimpsest processes the ways in which cultural sedimentations and erosions of sacred religious graves are affected by the changes in political, religious and national dominance in the local context, and thus how within these changes the identity of a site may erode, or be displaced by new sediments. This process both reflects and embodies the spatial dimension of urban layers that change the identification of particular parts of the city, but it also reflects the broader changes in an urban landscape. I argue that changes and/or continuation of the political dominance of ethno-religious and/or national communities, can have a direct impact on interpretations and/or re-interpretations of particular sites within the urban context, in this case religious sacred graves. This influence can work as a palimpsest, covering the former layer so that it can change the identity of a sitecompletely, down to the level of the toponym and its practical and symbolic functions and meanings; or, depending on the local scenarios, leaving the older layer visible, but making it hard to detect which layer is older.

Sidi Bel Abbes, the capital of Mekerra, a city of the interior plain, where agricultural land has experienced urban spillover at the expense of peri-urban land. The accelerated sprawl between 1987 and 2019 is expressed by threats to peri-urban state land, the pressure on agricultural activity on the peripheries of the city, and a relaxation of respect for planning policies at the local level. How can peri-urban land be better protected, and consequently encourage agricul-tural use, without abandoning it? This work analyses the legal nature of the land taken for the benefit of urban construction and characterizes its spread using Landsat multispectral satellite data. Our approach is based on the following question: Does urban sprawl impact the man-agement of land and its legal nature? What is the future of this land in the face of current threats and future planning and urban development orientations? The cartographic analyses with the actual practices of the different social groups in the field have made it possible to evaluate the relationship between agricultural policy, and implementation and to situate the conflicts or threats about urban sprawl. The north of the city of Sidi Bel Abbes (cadastral sec-tion n°3, 324.74 ha), is where 45% of state land is acquired for building purposes. A reorienta-tion of the peri-urban land is currently presented by a new management mode of an individual type, as a means of freezing and/or preserving the land: the creation of hedges and fences, the introduction of arboriculture (olive tree or other). Observations on site made it possible to ex-plain these practices, which are at the origin of these current representations. The crops prac-tice is linked to the profit drawn on compensations, and the plantations are a source of good remuneration.

This article examines the pattern of international migration among rural households in Edo State, Nigeria. The empirical results are based on a quantitative and qualitative survey of 240 household heads. The findings show that some household heads sourced information with special reference to international migration. This information assisted them in guiding intending migrants from their households on how to go about leaving the country in search of a better life. The information sourced was majorly centred on visa processing and obtaining residency/work permits and job opportunities. Family and friends, the Internet and travel agencies were among various channels where household heads got information to guide their international migration decisions. Migrants from rural households left the country through legal and illegal means. A key factor in their choice of destination country was the presence of either family members or friends, while plans and arrangements for migrants’ departure from the country were largely facilitated by household heads and migrants themselves. Irrespective of the quest of many migrants to leave Nigeria, some sought greener pastures in some African countries. Libya turned out to be the first destination of most migrants from where they later migrated to other countries of choice majorly in Europe.

The aim of this work is to analyse barchan dunes migration patterns and their effect on urban and agricultural areas in Ain Salah region in southern Algeria. A supervised classification of Landsat images over a 13 years period (2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017) was applied to create land cover maps which were used for a spatiotemporal monitoring of barchan migration by dune feature changes. The results show that sand dunes covered area has increased between 2005 and 2017 with direction movements from northeast to southwest and represents the potential of using time series imagery for a better understanding of dune migration and sand encroachment.

Polazište za istraživanje ovoga rada je u širokom spektru metoda kojima se mogu vrednovati krajobrazne kvalitete. Svrha rada je utvrđivanje prednosti i nedostataka često korištenih pristupa za vrednovanje krajobraza. Na odabranom području istraživanja, otoku Rabu, radom je identificirano petnaest krajobraznih područja te su određena tri pristupa za vrednovanje kvaliteta krajobraza: 1. jedan temeljen isključivo na vrednovanju ranjivosti kvaliteta krajobraza, a dva na procjeni osjetljivosti krajobraza; 2. preklapanjem krajobraznih područja sa združenim modelom ranjivosti kvaliteta krajobraza i 3. izravnim vrednovanjem krajobraznih područja s prirodnog, kulturno-povijesnog i vizualno-doživljajnog aspekta. Navedeni pristupi međusobno su uspoređeni radi utvrđivanja sličnosti i razlika među njima, kao i ukazivanja na prednosti i nedostatke svakog od njih. Rezultati su pokazali da adekvatnost pristupa ovisi o odabiru homogene prostorne jedinice. Ispravni pristup odabiru kriterija vrednovanja može utjecati na objektivnost metode. Najviše kvalitete krajobraza utvrđene su na jednakim područjima neovisno o pristupu utvrđivanja navedenih kvaliteta.

Složenost turističkog sektora ogleda se u raznovrsnosti gospodarskih i socijalnih aktivnosti. Posljedično, njihova provedba smatra se pokretačima koji uzrokuju različite pritiske i utjecaje na okoliš. Osnovni preduvjet za praćenje napretka prema održivom upravljanju turizmom je kontinuirano praćenje podataka i sveobuhvatni okvir procjene, kao što je okvir DPSIR (pokretač-pritisak-stanje-utjecaj-odgovor, prema engl. Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) (u nastavku tekst DPSIR). Među ekološkim izazovima DPSIR-a komunalni otpad kao posljedica turističkih aktivnosti identificiran je kao jedan od glavnih ekoloških izazova. U ovom istraživanju provedena je analiza utemeljena na dokazima odabranih pokazatelja kako bi se razmotrio DPSIR razvijen s naglaskom na održivo gospodarenje otpadom. Ovaj holistički pristup osigurava utemeljenu evaluaciju i odgovarajuće mjere kao odgovor društva na dugoročno rješavanje glavnih okolišnih izazova povezanih s intenzitetom turizma. Uz to, autori su istražili moguće smjerove za razvoj veće održivosti gospodarenja otpadom u turizmu Jadranske Hrvatske, uzimajući u obzir primjere dobre prakse na otoku Krku. Istraživanje i procjena odabranih pokazatelja potvrdila je da sezonalnost turizma utječe na okoliš. Također se pokazalo da visoki intenzitet turizma ima izravan utjecaj na infrastrukturu gospodarenja otpadom koja je uglavnom uspostavljena za ograničen broj stanovnika. Stoga autori predlažu umjereni intenzitet turizma kao najpovoljniju opciju, čime se osigurava održivo gospodarenje otpadom koji stvara manji pritisak na infrastrukturu gospodarenja otpadom i okoliš. Naposljetku, ovim je radom kreiran novi pokazatelj koji istražuje održivost gospodarenja komunalnim otpadom.

By now, ecosystemic regionalisation has gone through several decades of conceptual development and localised application. Yet, it remains multiform and ‘open to interpretations’, both in theory and practice. The article contributes to accommodating ecoregion in social sciences and humanities. To that effect, proceeding from a review of specialised literature, it outlines the essence of ecoregional approach and formulates and discusses the key characteristics of the concept ‘ecoregion’ (vague definitions, holistic capture, systemic nature, and manageability). It then presents ecoregion as one of the ideas underlying a wider environmental governance setting in the Adriatic area.

The incentive for this research has come from a wide range of methods for landscape quality evaluation. The purpose was to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the commonly used approaches for identifying landscape values. In the selected research area, the Island of Rab, the paper has identified 15 landscape character areas and appropriate approaches that were tested to determine landscape values - vulnerability modelling and landscape sensitivity assessment. The results have shown that the adequacy of the approach depends on the selection of a homogeneous spatial unit; the appropriate approach for the evaluation criteria selection may affect the objectivity of the method; and the highest landscape qualities were determined in the same areas regardless of the used approach.
