Abstract Story writing is a complex task for EFL students. With the rise of various writing assistance tools enabled by the development of AI, it has become crucial to explore how AI-assisted tools can alleviate the challenges students face in story writing. This study investigated the impact of using DeepL Translator, a cutting-edge AI-assisted tool, on Chinese EFL students’ story writing, evaluating both form and content, and analyzing students’ attitudes toward these tools. Based on the translanguaging approach, thirty university students first wrote their stories in Chinese, then drafted them in English. They used DeepL Translator to translate their Chinese stories into English and compared these translations with their original English drafts to create revised versions. Computational analysis and human raters were employed to evaluate students’ writing products. Surveys and interviews were used to obtain students’ attitudes. Results showed significant improvements in linguistic form, including syntactic and lexical complexity, fluency, and accuracy, assessed using the CALF framework. Additionally, content quality was significantly improved. This study also found that DeepL Translator provided significant support for lower proficiency students. Participants expressed overall satisfaction with DeepL Translator despite some challenges. This study highlights the role of AI-assisted tools in language learning and offers practical suggestions for language pedagogy and future research.

Abstract Over the years, social media have gained popularity as tools for language teaching. The social media platform WeChat has been employed for teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). While studies have investigated the use of WeChat for TCFL, no systematic reviews have been conducted to provide an overview of existing research. This review article examines empirical studies on WeChat in TCFL, summarising their main characteristics, findings, and critically assessing the quality and relevance of the available evidence. Scopus and Web of Science were used as primary databases for this review. Relevant studies were identified by using keyword sets such as “WeChat Chinese language”, “WeChat Mandarin”, “WeChat Hanyu” and “WeChat Putonghua”. The review identified the contexts, research methods and themes of the selected articles. The main themes include language learning, social interactions, learner agency and motivation. The paper also discusses the implications of using WeChat for TCFL and highlights areas for future research. It is hoped that the insights provided here will inform the design and implementation of future courses that use WeChat or other technology-assisted applications for language teaching.

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing many aspects of education and is gradually being introduced to language education. This article reviews the literature to examine main trends and common findings in relation to AI technologies and applications for second and foreign language learning and teaching. With special reference to computer-assisted language learning (CALL), the article explores natural language processing (NLP), data-driven learning (DDL), automated writing evaluation (AWE), computerized dynamic assessment (CDA), intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), automatic speech recognition (ASR), and chatbots. It contributes to discussions on understanding and using AI-supported language learning and teaching. It suggests that AI will be continuously integrated into language education, and AI technologies and applications will have a profound impact on language learning and teaching. Language educators need to ensure that AI is effectively used to support language learning and teaching in AI-powered contexts. More rigorous research on AI-supported language learning and teaching is recommended to maximise second and foreign language learning and teaching with AI.

Along with the development of speech and language technologies and growing market interest, social robots have attracted more academic and commercial attention in recent decades. Their multimodal embodiment offers a broad range of possibilities, which have gained importance in the education sector. It has also led to a new technology-based field of language education: robot-assisted language learning (RALL). RALL has developed rapidly in second language learning, especially driven by the need to compensate for the shortage of first-language tutors. There are many implementation cases and studies of social robots, from early government-led attempts in Japan and South Korea to increasing research interests in Europe and worldwide. Compared with RALL used for English as a foreign language (EFL), however, there are fewer studies on applying RALL for teaching Chinese as a foreign language (CFL). One potential reason is that RALL is not well-known in the CFL field. This scope review paper attempts to fill this gap by addressing the balance between classroom implementation and research frontiers of social robots. The review first introduces the technical tool used in RALL, namely the social robot, at a high level. It then presents a historical overview of the real-life implementation of social robots in language classrooms in East Asia and Europe. It then provides a summary of the evaluation of RALL from the perspectives of L2 learners, teachers and technology developers. The overall goal of this paper is to gain insights into RALL's potential and challenges and identify a rich set of open research questions for applying RALL to CFL. It is hoped that the review may inform interdisciplinary analysis and practice for scientific research and front-line teaching in future.

Abstract Research questions are central to mobile assisted language learning (MALL) projects and studies, yet they have received little attention to date. Taking research questions as its central focus, this paper offers some reflections on the complexity of the broader field of mobile learning, on different kinds of research, on salient themes and challenges in mobile learning and MALL, and it suggests some research directions for the future. Since MALL research is interdisciplinary, and since research questions are an object of study in other fields of knowledge, the paper refers to sources from multiple disciplines to support a more comprehensive consideration of current and future research questions in MALL. The paper is fundamentally an invitation to a global conversation about research questions in MALL.

Abstract This review generally endeavours to include a brief description of widely used automated writing evaluation systems, an explanation of underlying technologies, working principles and scopes of application, followed by a critical evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages in using these systems in educational contexts. Hopefully, the review would provide implications for language assessment practice and relevant research.
