This article analyzes the logics of predation that run through epidemiological surveys that target Malian sex workers in the fight against AIDS. Based on a double ethnography conducted in the capital city of Bamako at the turn of the 2010s – an ethnography of outreach AIDS policies and an ethnography conducted with women labeled as “sex workers” by these policies –, I show how epidemiological knowledge is produced through forms of vulnerabilization, capture, and lack of care. I highlight the roles that both the instruments and rationalities that guide epidemiological investigations and the context of moral stiffening play in the genesis of these forms of predation, and shed light on the ways in which these predatory logics participate in the construction of forms of knowledge that lie at the heart of contemporary biopolitics.
