Two new species of Wamalchitamia are described from Oaxaca, Mexico: W. serboana and W. yautepecana. Photographs of their holotypes are provided and their relationships to yet other species in the genus are discussed. A key to the accepted taxa in Wamalchitamia is provided, along with maps showing their distributions.

Abstract: The tribe Mutisieae (excluding Barnadesieae) traditionally comprises 84 genera and approximately 900 species in three subtribes: Gochnatiinae, Mutisiinae, and Nassauviinae. We examined whole and fractured pollen grains of 51 genera from these subtribes by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Additionally, we also examined 11 genera (Adenocaulon, Berardia, Brachylaeana, Cratystylis, Dipterocome, Eriachaenium, Gymnarrhena, Hesperomannia, Hoplophyllum, Tarchonanthus, and Warionia) whose tribal positions have been controversial. We present detailed tables of pollen characters for each taxon and 13 plates of SEM photos ofrepresentative taxa. We also provide limited discussion of pollen variation in the subbribes Gochnatiinae, Mutisiinae, and Nassauviinae and the tribal and subfamilial placement of the 11 problematic genera.

Herbarium and field studies of the chiefly neotropical genus Capraria have led to the recognition of four species. Capraria frutescens and C. mexicana are essentially endemic to Mexico. Capraria biflora is a widespread species that occurs throughout Mexico, Central and South America, the West Indies, and southern Florida. Capraria peruviana grows in northwestern South America and the Galápagos Islands. A complete account of synonymy and typification is provided, along with a key to species, scanning electron micrographs of pollen, stigmas and seeds, photographs, illustrations, and distribution maps.

Tetraneuris is recognized as a genus separate from Hymenoxys and a taxonomic treatment is presented for the 14 taxa recognized as constituting Tetraneuris: T. acaulis var. acaulis, T. acaulis var. arizonica, T. acaulis var. caespitosa, T. acaulis var. epunctata, T. argentea, T. herbacea, T. ivesiana., T. linearifolia var. linearifolia, T. linearifolia var. arenicola, T. scaposa var. scaposa, T. scaposa var. argyrocaulon, T. torreyana, T. turneri, and T. verdiensis. The revision includes synonymies, typifications, descriptions, discussions, and range maps for each of the accepted species.

The large malvaceous genus Abutilon is in need of critical revisionary study. The present nomenclator is presented as a first step toward such an eventual study, and it will also be useful to herbarium curators. It brings together, on a global basis, more than 500 names in specific rank, a number of names in infraspecific rank, and 25 names in infrageneric rank, giving bibliographic detail and typification information for each name as far as it is available. More than 70 lectotypes and two neotypes are designated herein. Five new combinations are included, viz., Bakeridesia scabrida, Bastardiopsis grewiifolia, Bastardiopsis turumiquirensis, Corynabutilon ×suntense, and Tetrasida tulla. Indexes are provided for the newly designated lectotypes and neotypes.

Starr provided a classically oriented systematic treatment of the genus Hesperaloe in which five species were recognized; only one of these, H. parviflora (including H. engelmannii) was said to be native to Texas (and closely adjacent Mexico). Unfortunately, he did not examine populations of this species complex in the field so as to assess morphoecogeographical patterns in the taxon. We have undertaken a field study of living populations of this complex in Texas and conclude that there are two, and possibly three, taxa of Hesperaloe native to Texas. Two of these, H. parviflora and H. engelmannii, have long been known to occur in Texas. The former is largely confined to the northern Chihuahuan Desert (mostly occurring with Larrea tridentata, Agave lechugilla and associated thorny shrubs) while the latter occurs mostly beneath oaks and associated shrubs and trees of the Edwards Plateau. A third, exceedingly rare, mostly Mexican species, H. funifera, has recently been suggested as being native to the state by Butterwick and Poole. According to Starr, Hesperaloe funifera is composed of two infraspecific taxa (H. f subsp. funifera and H. f subsp. chiangii), but these are treated as species in the present paper necessitating the following new name: Hesperaloe chiangii (Starr) B. L. Turner, comb. & stat. nov. Texas material belongs to H. funifera. A discussion of these several taxa is provided along with a map showing their distribution in Texas.

A new species of Sida sect. Ellipticifoliae, Sida floridana, is described and accommodated in a revised key to the section. Additional notes are provided on selected taxa as an update to the most recent treatment.

The task of finding the correct names for the main subdivisions of Phlox has been beset with difficulties in interpreting the intent of older authors, particularly Asa Gray. Gray divided Phlox into four main subgroups, some of which have been considered sections, but these are now seen to be only informal groups. Currently Phlox is subdivided into three sections: Phlox, Divaricatae Peter, and Occidentales A. Gray. The name Occidentales A. Gray was not validly published as a section; Gray used it only as part of a heading. The oldest valid name for what has been called sect. Occidentales is sect. Pulvinatae Peter. Recent papers have used the name sect. Annuae A. Gray in place of sect. Divaricatae, on grounds of priority. However, the name that Gray actually used was Annuae, Texenses, and it, like Occidentales, was not validly published. The sections of Phlox are being reconsidered at present in the light of new molecular evidence. Some changes will be needed, but old valid infrageneric names will still have a role to play in new infrageneric classifications.
