Various kinds of temple rings played an important role in female body decoration in the southern Carpathian Basin during the Early Iron Age. Based on finds from graves, especially at the cemetery in Donja Dolina, four basic types of temple rings have been distinguished, according to differences in the design of their terminals, while different variants were recognized based on the method of shaping of the body. Temple rings were most commonly made of a copper alloy, but during the Late Hallstatt period, silver temple rings with twisted bodies also appeared. As the finds show, particularly in older graves at Donja Dolina, combinations of different temple rings were often worn, whereas temple rings of the same shape appear more frequently in younger graves. After analysing temple rings of the Ciumbrud and Donja Dolina types, we examine two other basic types with variants found in women?s graves in the southern Carpathian Basin. These temple rings are rare outside this area, which may indicate cultural connectivity between different Late Hallstatt communities, possibly including matrimonial alliances. Notably, they are common in the Donja Dolina cemetery. Conversely, they appear in smaller numbers in graves of the Syrmian group in the Danube region, mostly as the silver twisted-body type, which is the youngest form. The wearing of different temple rings throughout almost the entire Early Iron Age, and even at the very beginning of the Late Iron Age, testifies to the fact that they were an important part of the visual identity of women and constituted an integral element of Late Hallstatt female body decoration.

In the beginning of the 1990s, the remains of a late antique building were discovered in Gornje Nerodimlje near Urosevac. The analysis of the size, decorations and furnishings of the largest room of this building indicates that it had the traits of a representative room of a residential building (villa). The built podium in its conch represents a stibadium, decorated with a piscina at its centre. The discovery of a caldarium in one part of the building indicates that a balneum was incorporated into the residential building. Judging by the iconography of the mosaics in the building, the owner of the villa obviously held on to old customs, beliefs and classical philosophy. Hence, he retreated to a rural area from the urban zones, affected by a different official religious policy and the destruction caused by barbarian invasions and by earthquakes.

As part of a comprehensive archaeological survey of the area around the site of Glac in the north-west of Serbia, a detailed examination has been undertaken of the pattern of rural settlement associated with Roman era drainage and canal works east of Roman Sirmium. The research question posed is whether there is any archaeological evidence for land subdivision including cadastration and centuriation during the late Roman period associated with the drainage and land reclamation works attributed to the emperor Probus. The context of any land subdivision and allocation and their implications for agricultural development during the late Roman period are explored.

The lack of appropriate conditions for the work of the Serbian Archaeological Society after Liberation led to new chapters in the history of Serbian archaeology. One of the basic plans during the reorganisation of the Academy of Sciences in the new state was related to the establishment of an institute modelled on the Academy in the USSR. In this paper, we assumed that the process of establishing the Institute of Archaeology SAS, as the future leading institution of its kind in the country, influenced the termination of the Serbian Archaeological Society. This decision was made at the conference about founding an Institute of Archaeology, on the 8th of November 1945. The president of the society, Miloje Vasic, back then mentioned that what he presented during the session decided that the SAS be integrated, together with Starinar, within the framework of the SAS. However, by the end of December, this decision was changed when leading experts dealing with archaeology decided that the SAS and Starinar should join the Institute of Archaeology. From later archived news, we learn that manager Vladimir Petkovic first planned to present Starinar as an organ of the institution in 1947 when he was looking for sources of funding for printing in various ways. However, at the first session of the Institute of Archaeology, as well as during 1948-1949, we find data from which it can be concluded that there was a change in the name of the official newspaper. It is assumed that the intended titles of the academy?s publications, according to its Regulations (Glasnik, Zbornik, etc.), could have influenced the change in the name of Starinar, in which it was planned to publish the works of collaborators of the Archaeological Institute. However, at one of the SAS Presidency?s conference sessions from the autumn of 1949, the final decision about printing Starinar was made at the Archaeological Institute, which his associates, led by manager Vladimir Petkovic, accepted without complaints. The Institute of Archaeology SAS, after its official establishment, took over first the SAS tradition, and then also published Starinar. Today, a hundred and forty years since publishing the first archaeological magazine in Serbia, as part of the new series of Starinar, the Institute of Archaeology proudly continues to publish results of the archaeological works and other scientific fields from Serbia and abroad.

Similarities between the forms of log cabins in the Carpathians and the Dinarides are evident. There is also an obvious likeness between the natural environment in the Dinarides and the Carpathians. This raises the logical question of why the builders in these two places built houses identical in form and whether the natural environment had any influence on this. Scientists have determined that humans inherit a genetic attraction towards their natural surroundings and that they react positively to it, even if they have never experienced living there. The constant contact humans had with nature and naturally occurring shapes and forms led them to develop aesthetic preferences towards this kind of imagery and build architectural spaces they could associate with them. The Dinaric and Carpathian log cabins are a clear example of how the environment influenced the aesthetic preferences of vernacular builders, creating a need to design naturally evocative spaces inspired by the imagery they perceived in their natural habitat. It is very telling that the vernacular builders, who could have built their log cabins in a number of different ways without coming into conflict with objective factors of their surroundings, still independently chose an identical design. The desire of builders in the Carpathians and the Dinarides to build forms that matched their natural environment is evident, which, according to evolutionary psychology, is a consequence of evolutionary development and the need to ensure survival. Builders in the Carpathians and the Dinarides used more complicated and demanding constructive elements in order to get a more natural form of the building. When they create, humans can only use the forms they are familiar with and which they have developed aesthetic preferences for, and this includes any naturally occurring shapes, such as vegetation and terrain configuration. The similarities between the Dinaric and Carpathian log cabins are a result of the vernacular builders using locally sourced natural materials and taking into account factors such as climate, vegetation and terrain configuration, which they had developed similar aesthetic preferences for. The natural environment, as a factor of aesthetic preferences of vernacular builders, conditioned the architectural form of the Carpathian and Dinaric log cabins.

Systematic archaeological excavations at the multicultural site of Foeni-S?la? in the Romanian Banat conducted during the first half of the 1990s uncovered evidence that the site was inhabited during the Early Neolithic, Copper, Bronze, Early Iron, Late Antique and Medieval Ages. This paper summarises the cultural history of the settlement at the site and describes the relevant deposits and material culture in each period.

This paper discusses changes in the Roman mining policy that took place during the Empire, based on the provisions found on the second tablet of the Lex metallis dicta2 (Vip II, 1, 2,5,6,7,8,9) from Vipasca. The main stress is placed on the position, rights and obligations of the coloni and miners and the status of mining pits after their sale. By examining the efficiency of the indirect model of silver and lead exploitation in the mining district of Vipasca, the authors present their solution to the unresolved issue of the means by which the Roman state obtained large quantities of metals necessary for the operation of state-run factories and imperial mints.

During the first excavations of the cemetery dating from the Bronze Age and Early Antiquity in the village of Velebit near Kanjiza (Northern Serbia) one of the excavated artefacts was found to belong to a used and broken stone mould for casting anvils. However, without an expert archaeologist to supervise the recovery of this find, which remained unknown for decades after its discovery, as a starting point, the authors of this article present a synthesis that takes into account several aspects of this significant class of metalcraft object. This proceeds from the history of the excavation to the general role of European Bronze Age anvils in gold and bronze metalworking, and then further on to their typological, terminological, chronological and functional analysis and to their long-range distribution as a sign of an interregional network of craftsmen, including their social context and symbolism.

A common problem that occurs when interpreting finds of perforated Roman coins is their function and whether they were perforated in Roman times or later. Hence, the specimens which originate from an undisturbed archaeological context, as is the case with finds from the Viminacium necropolis of Pecine, are indispensable. A total of 45 perforated coins were discovered at Pecine: 23 from graves and 22 from sacrificial areas.

In 2014, a group of silver objects was sold with the accompanying data ?from Serbia, from the area of Macvanska Mitrovica?, which, based on their composition, belonged to a hoard of the Early Roman period. The hoard of silver objects contains a total of 21 pieces that can be divided into 10 different types: emblemata, belt plates, tubuli, torques, wire jewellery - a bracelet and rings, necklaces of the chain type, rings, pendants of lunula, rhomboidal and omega shape, bracelet and rings with pendants in the form of miniature axes. The composition of the silver objects in the Macvanska Mitrovica (?) hoard show surprising similarities with the rich hoards of silver jewellery of Bare, Tekija and the find from Radenkovic-Crkvine and also with the distant hoard from Oltenia in the site of Rovinari (once Poiana, county Gorj). Therefore, we have named this group the Tekija - Bare hoards horizon, after two well-known most representative hoard-contents and their position in the middle of this geographical region. The last denarii from the Tekija and Bare hoards where minted at the end of AD 81, which allows the conclusion that these hoards, found near the military camps of Transdierna and Viminacium, were probably deposited in the years after AD 81, during the restless period of Roman-Dacian conflicts. In the Macvanska Mitrovica (?) hoard and the Radenkovic-Crkvine find the monetary part did not exist, so the time of their depositing remains open.
